Book Description
Included are chapters describing the synthesis of the most important glycosidic linkage analogs and oligosaccharides containing analogs of natural sugars. While the chemical-synthetic methods constitute the main body of the book, completing the volume is a section on the rapidly expanding and important field of enzymatic synthesis.
Recognition of the importance of complex oligosaccharides in a variety of biological processes has stimulated a massive effort to synthesize them. This book presents in one volume a review of oligosaccharide synthesis leading from classical methods through to today's newest state-of-the-art technology. It places particular emphasis on the most recent breakthroughs in the field. The provision, wherever possible, of methods on synthesis and the 17,000 references allow the reader to implement the techniques described.

Comments by the author (IM)........2006-01-06
This book is addressed to industrial scientists and engineers. Their primary assignments are not directly related to colloid chemistry and they may have no training in colloid chemistry. However, as is so often true in industrial research, development, and engineering, these assignments require a practical understanding of the general principles of colloid chemistry.
This book is a handbook, a resource for the explanation of important colloidal phenomena, for summaries of practical theories, for references to more detailed accounts, and for leads to suppliers and manufacturers.
This book does not contain the mathematical derivations so often required of students. These can be found by reference. It does not explain all the newest research topics. It does contain important ideas to help solve problems and to design new products.

Book Description
This book covers the physical side of colloid science from the individual forces acting between particles smaller than a micrometer that are suspended in a liquid, through the resulting equilibrium and dynamic properties. A variety of internal forces both attractive and repulsive act in conjunction with Brownian motion and the balance between them all decides the questions of stability and phase behavior.
Customer Reviews:
Great book: requires rewrite/revision; excellent for concept.......2005-04-21
Colloidal Dispersions is an excellent text, both for graduate students and for physicists/physical chemists foraying into the field of colloidal dispersions. The book starts by talking about particle hydrodynamics, then introduces Brownian motion and follows it up with description of different interaction forces experienced by colloidal particles. Thereafter, it discusses the thermodynamics of polymer in solution, how it affects the forces between the particles. In following chapters, it details the electrokinetic phenomena, and the physics of polymer mediated and charged mediated stabilization. The last few chapters return to dynamics again, with a chapter each devoted to sedimentation and rheology!
The book is beautifully written, and most of the material is useful as it is. Since this book was written in 1989, it requires a revision to bring it to the level of current understanding. The whole realm of nanoparticles is based on principles described here, as is the field of colloidal self-assembly. With a revision and few additions here and there, and maybe addition of some references to the work done between 1989-2005, the book can be made into workhouse of all colloidal scientists. I highly recommend this book to everyone interested in understanding the physical behavior of colloids. Coming with a background in Statistical Mechanics would be certainly helpful, and for people with training in Polymer Physics, the book can be understood by drawing analogies with the concepts used there. This is one of the best book in terms of the balance between the use of equations and words used to present physical picture and definitely one everyone in the field must read:) But as I said before, I will be greatly indebted to authors if they bring out a revised edition: I hope they do so soon!!
Good for Grad Students.......2003-02-16
This book, despite not being updated for about a decade, is still at the top of its class... This book should be on the desk of every scientist who is interested in interparticle forces. This book covers the theory and the development of colloid science from its early days to modern times. It is likely to be useful for theorists who will lean on the math and good references in the book and useful to experimentalists who seek to understand interparticle forces. Most experimentalists will probably also want to buy Jacob Israelachvili's book, which I haven't read much of, but I know Israelachvili is the man behind the surface forces apparatus (SFA), so many who seek to measure the interparticle forces described in WBR's book will want Jacob's book as well.
I am a graduate student at Princeton, home to the authors, and, not surprisingly, this book is a strong reflection of two courses in the chemical engineering department called Colloidal Dispersions I and II. I'm taking the series now, and, if you are in the class, you already know you need the book, and you shouldn't be reading this review.
I'd give the book 5 stars instead of 4, but I feel that it needs to be updated to reflect the increasing use of computer simulations (Note that I am biased, as a computer person) and new developments in colloid science. And lastly, though I feel the book is highly readable, the math is intense, and I suspect there are many scientists and engineers (myself included) who will have wished WBR had skipped fewer steps. Largely though, you can't blame the authors for that. The book would be a million pages long if they didn't skip steps. Try to use the extensive references to fill in the steps in the math if possible.
On a value basis, a 4 star book that costs only 2/3 what you usually pay means you are getting a steal here.

Text extracted from opening pages of book: Colloidal Dispersions by Earl K. Fischer National Bureau of Standards Washington, D. C. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York Chapman & Hall, Limited, London COPYRIGHT, 1950 BY JOHN WILEY & SONS, INC. All Rights Reserved This book or any part thereof must not be reproduced in any form without the written permission of the publisher. PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMEEICA Preface This monograph is planned as a guide to the theory and practice of the dispersion of solids in liquid media. Throughout the writing I have had in mind readers in several pro fessional categories: one is the physical and colloid chemist who is un familiar with the technical aspects of the subject; another is the scien tist in industry who is compelled by the exigencies of his work to con centrate on product development but finds that an understanding of theory is the most effective basis on which to design new products; a third is the production supervisor who is interested in the science and engineering underlying the operations in his care but who is too busy to seek their exposition in widely scattered places. There are others, I hope, who will also find the volume interesting and usable. The topics forming the substance of this book are part of the large province of colloid science. An effort has been made to provide a co herent account of the physical properties of colloidal dispersions and the methods for producing them. Innovations and refinements in re search techniques have brought a new insight to the structure of these dispersions. In particular, mention should be made of methods for particle-size measurement, experimental means for gauging the inter action of dispersed particles, and new reagents that offer a measure of control for some of the physical properties. There remain, of course, unanswered questions, and the subject abounds with engaging and im portant research problems. This book is intended to supplement the well-known and easily ac cessible monographs on surface and colloid chemistry. Information has been drawn from diverse sources. In an effort to keep the book of moderate size I have been perplexed by the inevitable problem of selec tion, for pertinent material is to be found in the literature of many in dustries and branches of science. I have endeavored to document the work adequately and to bring subjects into their correct historical per spective. Where available information ran low, I have, on occasion, taken the liberty of speculating, and the reader will find hypotheses advanced at various points through the book. I hope that errors are infrequent or of the kind that will not mislead the scientist; if serious vi PREFACE errors of fact or interpretation are found, I shall appreciate having them called to my attention. Although the writing of this monograph has been a personal venture on leisure time, it represents in some measure gainful discussions and collaboration with many friends and sometime colleagues. I wish to mention, in particular, the following: C. R. Bragdon, D. M. Gans, A. E. Gessler, the late Henry Green, W. D. Harkins, E. N. Harvey, Jr., C. H. Lindsley, L. W. Ryan, and Ruth N. Weltmann. In a very tangible way I am grateful to many persons and organiza tions who gave permission to reproduce material. Included are publica tions of the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Physics, the American Society for Testing Materials, the National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association, Inc., the MacNair-Dorland Co., and the Textile Research Institute, Inc. The photocopying serv ice of the American Chemical Society, operated in cooperation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture Library, has been an invaluable aid in supplying articles difficult to find. I wish also to record indebtedness to my late wife, Catherine Fischer, for assistance with the reference material and for literary criticism, to Margaret Carver Ernsberger for careful proofreading and help with t

Molire's classic verse comedy: the folly of one man's attempt to mold the "perfect" wife and his eventual undoing as she outsmarts him
Customer Reviews:
A play to enjoy, a message to ponder..........2005-04-20
"L' école des femmes" is a very well-known comedy written by Molière (1622-1673) in 1662. At first sight, it appears to be the epitome of the classical comedy of mistakes. Despite that, this short play also deals with a topic that was highly controversial during Molière's life, women's education. The author of this book seamlessly incorporates that theme into the plot, making the reader reflect on it even without realizing he is doing that.
To start with, I would like to outline the plot of "L' école des femmes". It is simple, but shows that a play doesn't need to be too complicated in order to entertain. The main character is Arnolphe, an old man who having had lots of affairs with married women, distrust women in general. The strange thing is that in spite of that Arnolphe still wants to get married, provided (of course) that he can find a woman he can trust with his honour. After much pondering, he finds a seemingly perfect solution for his problem: to marry a woman without too much education, so she won't know how to deceive him ("Épouser une sotte est pour n'etre point sot"). According to Arnolphe, a dumb woman is a honest woman.
Having arrived to that conclusion, he decides to take a young orphan, Agnès, under his wing. Arnolphe educates Agnès according to his ideas: not too much studying, a lot of sewing and praying. The years go by, and Agnès grows into a beautiful but profoundly ignorant young woman. Arnolphe is ready to marry her, but something unexpected happens: a new character appears. That character is Horace, a young and handsome man who falls madly in love with Agnès and begins to court her, to Arnolphe's desperation and Agnès' happiness.
What will happen?. Well, you need to read "L' école des femmes" in order to know that. What I can tell you, though, is that I really enjoyed reading this play, notwithstanding the fact that there were some words that are no longer used in modern French. That made reading this play a little bit more difficult, although there was an abundance of footpages that explain the meaning of those words perfectly well, something that clarified my doubts. What is more, this edition includes a chronology of Molière's life, and several interesting studies regarding this play, something that helps to reader to understand "L' école des femmes", and the context in which it was written.
On the whole, I think that "L' école des femmes" is worth the time and effort of reading it. Molière wrote a perfectly good comedy, but he also took a stand regarding what kind of education should be given to women. He did that throughout the story, and also in a phrase said by one of the secondary characters, who says that "Une femme d'esprit peut trahir son devoir; mais il faut, pour le moins, qu'elle ose le vouloir; et la stupide au sien peut manquer d`ordinaire sans en avoir l`envie, et sans penser le faire". I completely agree with that, and I recommend this book as a play to enjoy, but also as a message to ponder...

L'ecole des femmes-negative review.......2000-02-08
I'm sorry to say that this Moliere play was dissapointing. Not only was it plain boring, yet it was very predictable. Moliere's sense of humor in this book let me down compared to other books such as L'AVARE and LES PRECIEUSES RIDICULES, which I highly recommend to read.
Very amusing Satire........1999-07-23
I read this play for a French Lit. class and enjoyed Moliere's sense of humor. I laughed out loud as I watched everyone's plans go horribly awry. A great classic social commentary. It centers around one man's obsessive fear of cuckoldry (when a man's wife cheats on him), and the extremes to which he goes to avoid this. He practically emprisons a girl/young woman so that she can be raised properly and will make a faithful and obedient wife when she finally matures. The only problem for me was that it has a lot of references and vocabulary which are out of date and hard for a non-(native)French speaker to understand.
