Book Description
The propagation of curved, nonlinear wavefronts and shock fronts are very complex phenomena. Since the 1993 publication of his work Propagation of a Curved Shock and Nonlinear Ray Theory, author Phoolan Prasad and his research group have made significant advances in the underlying theory of these phenomena. This volume presents their results and provides a self-contained account and gradual development of mathematical methods for studying successive positions of these fronts. Nonlinear Hyperbolic Waves in Multidimensions includes all introductory material on nonlinear hyperbolic waves and the theory of shock waves. The author derives the ray theory for a nonlinear wavefront, discusses kink phenomena, and develops a new theory for plane and curved shock propagation. He also derives a full set of conservation laws for a front propagating in two space dimensions, and uses these laws to obtain successive positions of a front with kinks. The treatment includes examples of the theory applied to converging wavefronts in gas dynamics, a graphical presentation of the results of extensive numerical computations, and an extension of Fermat's principle. There is also a chapter containing approximate equations used to discuss stability of steady transonic flows. Full of new and original results, Nonlinear Hyperbolic Waves in Multidimensions is your only opportunity to explore a full treatment of these recent findings in book form. The material presented in this volume will prove useful not only for solving practical problems, but also in raising many difficult but important mathematical questions that remain open.

Turbomachinery Rotordynamics: Phenomena, Modeling, and Analysis
ASIN: 0471181757 |
Book Description
Broad coverage of rotordynamics with an emphasis on understanding and solving vibration problems
Rotating parts are among the most common elements in modern mechanical systems and often become the main source of problematic vibrations in machinery. This volume offers wide-ranging coverage of fundamental rotordynamics in order to provide engineers with the necessary knowledge to eliminate various vibration problems. Authors Yamamoto and Ishida provide classification of rotating shaft systems and general coverage of key ideas common to all branches of rotordynamics, such as critical speed, gyroscopic movement, whirling motion, and frequency diagrams. They also provide state-of-the art analysis of dynamical problems not treated in most other books on the subject, such as nonlinear rotordynamics, self-excited vibration, nonstationary vibration, and flow-induced oscillations. Nonlinear resonances are discussed in detail, as well as methods for shaft stability and various theoretical derivations and computational methods for analyzing rotors to determine and correct vibrations. Linear and Nonlinear Rotordynamics is a professional engineer's complete resource for dealing with vibration in rotordynamical systems.

The latest research and applications are incorporated throughout, e.g. computer recognition and synthesis of speech, physiological acoustics, psychological acoustics, thermoacoustics, diagnostic imaging and therapeutic applications and acoustical oceanography.
With a Foreword by Manfred R. Schroeder
Book Description
Now in an accessible paperback edition, this classic work is just as relevant as when it first appeared in 1974, due to the increased use of nonlinear waves. It covers the behavior of waves in two parts, with the first part addressing hyperbolic waves and the second addressing dispersive waves. The mathematical principles are presented along with examples of specific cases in communications and specific physical fields, including flood waves in rivers, waves in glaciers, traffic flow, sonic booms, blast waves, and ocean waves from storms.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2007-09-20
I took some graduate level courses from Dr. Whitham at CalTech in 1973 while this book was still in draft form, and he was the head of the Applied Mathematics department. He was an excellent lecturer, and this book has long been an exemplar of that style as well as the pioneer book in the treatment of non linear waves. To my knowledege it was the first textbook to treat solitons. The book is very subtle in its treatment of physics, and the adept reader will note the bearing of dispersion relations on the foundations of quantum mechanics.
good backround.......2000-03-06
Most treatment of waves involves their role in electromagnetic spectra. The writer provides the historical account of the derivation of these algebraic (read numerical analysis) versions which implement in MathCad and Matlab well. The book's material on water waves is worth the price alone. However, only at the end, does the author venture into the world of non-linear dynamics which is so important to this area. Most of the book treats the wave phenomenology as most physicists will in the kinematical sense trying to linearize everything and avoiding the path if it can't be linearized. (In this sense most of the arguements and examples are structured in the conservation of mass and energy). This is great, however for the construction of first order linear diff. equations for implementation in Mathcad or Matlab. If one were not aware of bifurcations, limit-cycles or even total response waves from control theory, one would still be left feeling secure that water waves are standing waves. (They are not). Early research breaks them up into first part(Airy) long-standing(middle of the wave) and orgin to get around this problem. Book does not approach treatment as a diffusion problem.
The most understandable treatment of waves I have read!.......1998-06-30
Linear and Nonlinear Waves provides an excellent treatment of the wave phenomena. This is a very complex and mathematically intesive subject, which Whitham conveys in an understandable and followable manner. He takes the approach that the reader has some knowlege of the subject, but writes at an introductory graduate level. This book will give any mathematician or engineer interested in waves an excellent introduction and bring them to a superior understanding.

Book Description
Over the past thirty years significant progress has been made in the investigation of nonlinear waves--including "soliton equations", a class of nonlinear wave equations that arise frequently in such areas as nonlinear optics, fluid dynamics, and statistical physics. The broad interest in this field can be traced to understanding "solitons" and the associated development of a method of solution termed the inverse scattering transform (IST). The IST technique applies to continuous and discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations of scalar and vector type. This work presents a detailed mathematical study of the scattering theory, offers soliton solutions, and analyzes both scalar and vector soliton interactions. The authors provide advanced students and researchers with a thorough and self-contained presentation of the IST as applied to nonlinear Schrödinger systems.
Download Description
In recent years there have been important and far reaching developments in the study of nonlinear waves and a class of nonlinear wave equations which arise frequently in applications. The wide interest in this field comes from the understanding of special waves called 'solitons' and the associated development of a method of solution to a class of nonlinear wave equations termed the inverse scattering transform (IST). Before these developments, very little was known about the solutions to such 'soliton equations'. The IST technique applies to both continuous and discrete nonlinear Schr_dinger equations of scalar and vector type. Also included is the IST for the Toda lattice and nonlinear ladder network, which are well-known discrete systems. This book presents the detailed mathematical analysis of the scattering theory; soliton solutions are obtained and soliton interactions, both scalar and vector, are analyzed. Much of the material is not available in the previously-published literature.
Book Description
This is the only book at this level to embrace a universal approach to three major developments in classical physics, namely nonlinear waves, solitons and chaos. A comprehensive treatment of instabilities is followed by a study of the nonlinear structures arising from them. Examples of these are coherent entities like nonlinear waves and solitons, as well as the incoherent structures associated with chaos. The first part of the book is a self-contained introduction to general topics associated with nonlinear physics, and would be accessible to final-year undergraduates and beginning postgraduate students. The remainder of the book, for example the treatment of cylindrical solitons, is more advanced and will have a wide appeal to specialists in a number of branches of physics. Each chapter concludes with a set of problems. This very topical text could be used by students taking courses in nonlinear aspects of physics. In general, it will be of value to final-year undergraduates and beginning graduate students studying fluid dynamics, plasma physics and applied mathematics.
Customer Reviews:
Obtuse and opaque tome.......2006-07-11
The main thrust of this textbook is soliton theory and examples in plasma physics. There is some additional material borrowed from fluid dynamics, but the flavor is still plasmas. This text is very analytic. The derivations are often hard or impossible to follow, and the authors seem to assume general familiarity with plasma physics. I don't have that familiarity, so I found the choice of topics covered and the ensuing theory ad hoc and unmotivated. This is the kind of text where you can spend an enormous amount of time grinding through it, and at the end of the day come away with very litte applicable knowledge.
Chaos is for everyone.......2001-06-22
This book delves far beyond the capabilities of a non-physicist such as myself and is not for everyone. However, I have had a regular tennis game for many years with co-author Professor George Rowlnds of Warwick University (UK). Over beer afterwards, he has often expounded on the importance of choas theory in the real world. I doubt but that a handful of people have the expertise to write a proper review of this book but, as none have done so, I offer this as a poor replacement. Your round, George!

Book Description
Raymond Chandler’s classic gumshoe Philip Marlowe is the quintessential American detective. His effortless masculinity, smoldering sexuality, and verbal fleetness remain the embodiment of cool. He liked liquor, women, and working alone. And, in a world defined by betrayal, mistrust, and double-dealing, Marlowe’s rough exterior belies an unshakable code of honor. Taken together, his observations and witticisms represent some of the most scathing and brilliant writing in crime fiction, and coalesce into a wonderfully alluring worldview: a vision of unswerving righteousness, accountability, and stylish conduct in a sea of turpitude and injustice.
Philip Marlowe’s Guide to Life is an elegant, A–Z compendium of Marlowe’s ever-more-relevant observations about crime, women, work, sex, good, evil, and life in the big city. Chandler’s genius transcended genre; though he seemed to single-handedly invent noir, his work ventured beyond it into an idiom all its own, and he left behind a legacy of grit and disarming beauty. Here is a brilliant and loving tribute to that legacy, sure to delight fans old and new.
Customer Reviews:
'The Genuine Article'.......2007-03-30
Excellent, excellent book for 1940's one-liners and wise-guy cracks - West Coast wise guy, that is. This collection of Philip Marlowe quips and punch lines is THE authority on America's original 20th Century lone-wolf good-guy from L.A. An excellent idea for a gift, great conversation piece at a coktail party.
Stocking Stuffer.......2005-11-27
For those lovers of hard boiled fiction, this slight book lets you flip through some of the best lines and passages from Chandler's novels. Easier than going back to your underlined copies. While a little pricey , the truth is worth it---on marriage:"For two people in a hundred,it's worth it."; on Hollywood:"In Hollywoord, anything can happen, anything at all."; on night:"It was night. The world outside the windows was a black world."
And for those you have yet to bite into the pleasure, this is a fine introduction.
