Patterson not at his best.......2007-10-05
First to Die is a great read for an airplane or when in the mood for something very light. The prose is very direct, probably on an early high school reading level. The mystery is not very hard to figure out and most readers familiar with the genre will get it long before the ending. I would not rate this as highly as Kiss the Girls or most of the Alex Cross novels. Still, you can do worse than read First to Die to kill a few hours.
I couldn't put it down.......2007-09-27
It was actually a couple years ago that I first read this novel but I recently picked it back up and read it again and even though I knew the story line it was still a wonderful read, its suspenseful and twisted with a little side of sinister but also there is a real life appreciating lesson in the end of it all. I absolutely loved the first book...haven't gotten the other five in the series but I'm sure Ill get there because if they are anything like the first I will certainly enjoy them all. I definitely commend Mr. Patterson on his writing he is phenomenal.
Riveting thrill ride.......2007-09-19
I had previously read When the Wind Blows and wasn't that intrigued by Mr. Patterson. Since it was more on the science fiction/fantasy side (which I'm normally not a fan of anyways) I thought I'd give this book a try. I have to say I was very impressed. It was by far one of the best mysteries I have read in quite some time. He created three-dimensional, interesting characters with emotional and physical struggles, a lot of suspense and intrigue, and kept you guessing until the very end. I thought that I had it figured out but I was wrong...
There was a little romance thrown in, with the heroine, Lindsay, falling for her partner, Chris Raleigh. But overall it was a riveting, edge of your seat, intense murder mystery/thriller. I hesitate to give it five stars because of the graphic nature and cringe-worthy details that were off-putting. Granted I understand why he described the crimes that way, they were grisly crimes but still some of the more suggestive details (i.e. position of body, etc) were grossly unnecessary. The ending was also too rushed- the epilogue especially, which seemed tacked on as an after-thought- making the intense scene unrealistic and anticlimactic. Other than that it was a thrill ride of a read and I am looking forward to reading more of the Women's Murder Club series. I am even more intrigued to see if the new TV show will be just as gripping (Fridays at 8pm on ABC starting October 12, 2007).
Awesome....couldn't put it down........2007-08-11
I started this book in July and I am now on the fourth book in the series. I couldn't put it down and I still can't put the others down either. It was a great book and well written, totally held my attention. Loved it.
My 1ST James Patterson book.......2007-07-31
I don't know how the title ties in with the story. The story moved slow for me in the beginning, but halfway through it picked up and moved very fast to the end, which was exciting, surprising, and had a lot of action. I'll definitely read another of Patterson's book. I liked the short chapters.

Book Description

Pompeii did have women business owners.......2006-07-15
The two courses in Roman studies I took at UMass/Boston both studied excavation work at Pompeii and both had slides of businesses owned by women there at the time of volcanic eruption in 79AD; therefore I was baffled that one of the reviewers thought that a woman operating her brother's business while he, a Roman centurion, was away on operations, was unbelievable. However, I do have to agree that I did find unbelievable that she would leave the inn boundary by herself. Roman ladies, as far as I have read, were always accompanied by one or more attendents beyone their home area. I thought that the book was well written and most entertaining and conveyed a vey good sense of place.
Too long!.......2004-07-08
There are a couple things I didn't like about this book. First, it was too long. I was bored about halfway through. I did finish it to see if it got any better, but it didn't. Second, I thought the author made the main character, a woman, a little unbelievable. I'm all for women's rights, but there's no way a woman in that time would have been able to do what she did. I don't mind a little stretching, but Ms. Finnis took it too far, I thought. If you're looking for something similar to this, check out Lindsay Davis. I have enjoyed her books much more.
fast paced action packed historical conspiracy thriller.......2003-12-26
After Mt. Vesuvius erupted and destroyed the town of Pompeii, one of the roman families who escaped the devastation moved to the small backwater town of Oak Bridge near Eburacum, Britannia. Aurelia Marcella and her twin sister Albia own the Oak Tree Mansio, a popular guest house and posting station. After five decades of Roman rule, a certain segment of the native population want to throw the outsiders out of their country and are willing to use violence to do it.
The rebels have the support of the Druids who believe the Romans are desecrating the land and the forests. One of the primary targets of the insurgents is the destruction of the Oak Tree Mansio and the deaths of everyone associated with it. Led by Aurelia and with the help of trusted allies, the property is well guarded but an attack is barely beaten off because a traitor in their midst gave crucial information to the enemy. Unless they can find out who that collaborator is, lives will be lost and property destroyed.
GET OUT OR DIE pretty much sums up the feelings of the natives living under occupied rule. The conspirators are smart and clever and could be any native or even a Roman who has a grudge against his or her homeland. Jane Finnis' story is told through the eyes of Roman businesswoman Aurelia Marcella who doesn't understand why anyone would object to being part of the far flung empire. This is a fast paced action packed historical conspiracy thriller that readers will find fascinating due to the perspectives of the cast.

Good book, but you probably should format the fonts used in the forms.......2007-01-08
This book is good for creating a Living Will and Power of Attorney. People are feaful of thinking about themselves not being in control of their life, but it's actually worse if you haven't made a plan (except in cases where you clearly want a court to be in jurisdiction of your choices). After visiting a young friend of mine in her 20's who is in a coma and remains in a convalescent home months after her accident, I decided that would not be what I would want if I were in a similar situation. So I used the book's CD form, downloaded to my PC, typed in my entries, had it notarized, and sent to my primary care physician and the people in my life who have agreed to make decisions in my behalf. It really was simple. Not easy, as I had kind of a lump in my throat thinking about it all, but much better to get it done.
The form's font made my portion of the form difficult to read once I printed it out with my input typed in the necessary spots. I would recommend if you are using these forms, that you use fonts that allow easier reading than the default. Otherwise it was good, easy, done.
The Power of Attorney was also easy. Again, I used the form on the included CD, typed in my entries, took it to my notary, and again, done. The book gave good information, that this form, unlike the Living Will form, should not be distributed in case you need to take the power of attorney from your selected person, etc. It does need to be in a location for the selected person to find the power of attorney form when needed.
With both of these, you need agreement with the selected people in your life.
I've used Nolo for advice in the past and have always found them and their books to be easy to use and correct.
Do not buy if you are a Macintosh user........2007-01-04
While the information in the book was helpful, I was not able to use the included CD on my Macintosh computer.
