    Book Description

The latest update to Bela Liptak's acclaimed "bible" of instrument engineering is now available. Retaining the format that made the previous editions bestsellers in their own right, the fourth edition of Process Control and Optimization continues the tradition of providing quick and easy access to highly practical information. The authors are practicing engineers, not theoretical people from academia, and their from-the-trenches advice has been repeatedly tested in real-life applications. Expanded coverage includes descriptions of overseas manufacturer's products and concepts, model-based optimization in control theory, new major inventions and innovations in control valves, and a full chapter devoted to safety. With more than 2000 graphs, figures, and tables, this all-inclusive encyclopedic volume replaces an entire library with one authoritative reference. The fourth edition brings the content of the previous editions completely up to date, incorporates the developments of the last decade, and broadens the horizons of the work from an American to a global perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Before we can control a Process, first we must fully understand it and all of its components.......2006-07-24

Absolutely the Very Best Process Control Reference for the Process Control Engineer - Now Updated and Expanded !!. This is the second volume of the Instrument Engineer's Handbook, and. as its title suggests, it deals with Process control and Optimization, covering everything from Control Hardware, Control Theory, Control Strategies, and the Control and Optimization of Specific Unit Operations.

The Chapters on Control Hardware cover in detail transmitters, controllers, control valves, regulators and other types of final control elements, PLCs, and other logic devices, human interfaces and displays, including the design of control rooms.

The Chapters on Control Theory and Control Strategies covers everything from control basics and PID controllers, to tuning methods, stability, process characteristics, process modeling and simulation, model-based control, genetic and other evolutionary algorithms, fuzzy logic programming, neural networks and other advance control strategies.

The Chapters on Control and Optimization of Unit Operations provide both in-depth of both the theory of operation and control, and practical implementation for the control of pumping, distillation, chemical reaction, heat transfer and many other.

While evaluating and reviewing such sophisticated topics about Process Control, this handbook also tries and succeeds to provide and reinforce the reader with the most useful tool for the Automation and Control Engineer: Common Sense. In order to emphasize the importance of Common Sense, the Author gives some practical recommendations that include the following ones:

    - Before we can control a process, one must fully understand it.
    - Being progressive is good, but being a guinea pig is not. Therefore is the wrong control strategy is implemented, the performance of even the most advanced digital hardware will be unacceptable.
    - And Instrumentation, Automation, and Process Control Engineer or Technician is doing a good and better job by telling plant management what they need to know, and not what they like to hear.
    - If an instrument is worth installing, it should also be worth calibrating and maintaining. No device can outperform the reference against it was calibrated.
    - Trust your common sense not the sales literature. Independent performance evaluation based on the recommendation of international and national users associations should be done before installation, and not after it.

I am an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control. I have been working in the Process Industries for more than 16 years as an Automation, Instrumentation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer. I consider this book to be the very best reference in the field for anyone and everyone working in these areas or in areas related with their Industrial applications. You will find this handbook useful, either if your work is related with the engineering, maintenance or operation of Process Control Systems.

If you are a beginner to Process Control, you may also want to consider "Process Dynamics, Modeling, and Control (Topics in Chemical Engineering)" by Babatunde A. Ogunnaike, which is an excelent introductory reference to Chemical Processes Dynamics and Control.

5 out of 5 stars This is like the bible for process control.......1999-07-29

The first edition was published in 1969, the second edition was released in 1982 (Volume 1) and 1985 (Volume 2). This latest edition comprises over 3000 pages between the 2 volumes. Each volume includes 8 chapters with many sub-headings per chapter.

The Flow Measurement (29 sub-headins) and Analytical Instrumentation (60 sub-headings) chapters were heavily revised for the 1995 edition of VOLUME 1. PLC's & Other Logic Devices (10 subheadings), DCS & Computer-based Systems (16 sub-headings) and Process Control Systems (27 sub-headings) were largely rewritten for the 1995 edition of VOLUME 2. Within each product-oriented sub-heading (eg. Magnetic Flowmeters, Infrared Analyzers, DCS Basic Packages), in addition to extensive treatment of the applicable technology, a comprehesive listing of manufacturers and typical price ranges is provided. Under Process Control Systems, a diverse group of applications (Airhandler Controls, Clean Room Controls, Distillation Advanced Controls, Compressor Controls, Reactor Control & Optimation and many others) is profiled. Throughout this handbook, process control is treated in the time-domain to minimize mathematical complications implicit in frequency-domain analysis. Its focus is the practicding engineer and explains most control phoenomena visually.

Over 250 contributing authors are listed, including many prestigious names immediately recognizable by process control professionals. Liptak personally authored a substantial number of revised and up-dated easlier contribution of pioneering practitioners. This opus is a tour de force.

Liptak is a long-time industrial consultant, teaches a graduate course in advanced process control at Yale and writes the widely-followed Lessons Learned feature in CONTROL magazine. He has also lectured at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and been published on the editorial pages of the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

            Book Description

The ability to predict the behavior of fermentation systems enhances the possibility of optimizing their performance. Mathematical equations of model systems represent a tool for this and the most recent advances in computer hardware and software have made the approach more effective than previous simplistic attempts. The current knowledge of biochemical microbial pathways and the experience in optimization of chemical reactors combined with extremely powerful and accessible computers, loaded with easy to use software and mathematical routines, are changing the way processes are being developed and operated.

This book has been written for all those who work with microbial cultures, providing a useful, quick and contemporary re-education for practitioners and students alike, breaking through interdisciplinary barriers. Biologists, engineers and biochemists will benefit from the methods of microbial process description and optimization based on mathematical equations. The basic techniques of modeling the bio-system are summarized in Part I. The useful concept of mass balancing is introduced in Part II for those who are not used to this simple and very useful engineering tool. An extensive and descriptive case study of a selected fermentation bio-process in Part III elucidates further the concepts of very pragmatic mathematical modeling of bioreactor systems.

The volume outlines how to simply develop mathematical models of microbial systems and demonstrates their power to: guide and minimize the experimental work; check the consistency of experimental results; predict the behavior of the bio-system and analyze biocatalytic processes; diagnose the anomalies in the microbial culture behavior and optimize the performance of bioreactors.

            Book Description

The only book on the market devoted to sequential simplex optimizationThis book presents an easy-to-learn, effective optimization technique that can be applied immediately to many problems in the real world. The sequential simplex is an evolutionary operation (EVOP) technique that uses experimental results-it does not require a mathematical model. The authors present their subject with a level of detail and clarity that is refreshingly welcome in a technical text. The basics are presented first, followed by a detailed discussion of the fine points needed to get the most out of this optimization technique. Worksheets are provided and their use is illustrated with step-by-step worked examples. This makes the logic and calculations of the simplex algorithms easy to understand and follow. The text also provides more than 200 figures and over 500 references to sequential simplex applications, which allows rapid access to specific examples of the use of the technique in a wide range of applications.Sequential Simplex Optimization: A Technique for Improving Quality and Productivity in Research, Development, and Manufacturing is essential for any student or professional who desires to learn this innovative technique quickly and easily.

5 out of 5 stars Great technique, not that easy.......2007-02-20

I can attest that SS works great to optimize quickly. However, trying to do it using this book was way hard compared to using Multisimplex software. The guy who said you could do it on a calculator could make himself a few bucks putting out some inexpensive shareware program to do it. Like I said, the technique itself is good stuff as long as you are not interested in mathematically modelling your system.

4 out of 5 stars All the optimization most people will ever need........2003-08-05

Want to quickly optimize a formula, process, or procedure? Don't want to spend a fortune on statistical experimental design software? Don't want to spend time learning how to use software to handle mixtures, constraints, expanded designs and all that rot? Buy this book (if you can find it), and you can get the same results the statistician would, with just a hand calculator, or pencil and paper. The only difference is you won't have a lot of fancy graphs to show off your results (although you could do that if necessary).

Too bad this book is out of print. An electronic copy used to be available free on the web, but I haven't seen it lately.

I, Psmith, have paid a penny for a ticket on a tram. If this should get about the clubs! I tell you, Comrade Jackson, no such crisis has ever occurred before in the course of my career.'

2 out of 5 stars The Woe in Wodehouse.......2007-07-14

This is a ghastly book. Its only merit is that in it lie the seeds of the masterful prose stylist Wodehouse would become. It reads like strung together Vaudeville bits, which it largely is. Leaving off at chapter two and picking up again at chapter 26, it reads as a tolerably lively school story which, again, is what I think it is. In that, it's a worthy successor to Mike, following, as it does, the exploits of the characters from the early books, Mike and Psmith.

Published in 1910, this was Wodehouse's thirteenth novel, but that is quite misleading if you track down the books today. The six school story books have been dragged together into two Penguin collections, The Gold Bat and Other Stories and The Pothunters and Other Stories. Tales of St. Austin's (1905) collects twelve more school stories. Mike (1909) falls immediately in the school story line-up before Psmith in the City. Psmith Journalist (1915) was originally published as a serial in the school story magazine, The Captain, in 1909, and thus predates the publication of Psmith in the City, which explains a lot. Leave It To Psmith (1923) comes after two Jeeves collections, and a few Drones and golf stories. These few salient facts to the good, what have we got?

There is a bit more later Psmith, one might note, but Richard Usborne, in Plum Sauce, says that Enter Psmith (1935) and Mike and Psmith (1953) are "both virtually the same book, made from the second half of Mike (1909)". Psmith is an inveterate talker, what Usborne calls a "buzzer". Much of his talk drags in music hall patter, and this book is a cautionary tale against using too many obscure topical references. Usborne seems to know most of them, but the only one I recognized is Jerome's 1889 comic novel, Three Men in a Boat. This story often makes lists of all- time funny novels, and rightly so, but Jerome is nowhere near as funny as Wodehouse would become. What is oddly missing in Wodehouse is any reference to his contemporary, Chesterton, who was, by the early 20th century, an accomplished novelist, having published the rollicking Manalive, The Man Who Was Thursday, and The Ball and the Cross, among other titles, before 1910.

So what intervenes between chapters two and twenty six of the fine cricket story that is Psmith in the City to so ruin it? A bank, the "City" of the title. Readers familiar with the Wodehouse vita cannot help but see in the New Asiatic Bank a scarcely disguised caricature of The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank to which the young Plum was sent to toil in 1900. Readers so enlightened cannot help but find the comic elements of the book sad, seeing in the captivity of Mike and Psmith that of the author. Wodehouse cannot help but vent through the mouthpiece of Psmith, but clearly in his love of sport, he is Mike, who feels his confinement, away from the open air, far more deeply than Psmith, who can find a lark anywhere.

This is why Malcolm Muggeridge, in the foreword to The Uncollected Wodehouse, says that "Mike turns into Bertie Wooster and the precocious Psmith into Jeeves". The insights into Mike are some of the best bits of the book, what Jeeves would call "the psychology of the individual". In later books, they would largely be assumed and acted on, rather than spelled out, as Jeeves moves by intuition his wonders to perform. Psmith, as is often pointed out, is a great character. But Mike is also a great character, a true, heroic, down to his soles great guy. And it is a tribute to Wodehouse that even in these formative years, his hero is not a writer or a talker, but a tongue- tied sportsman whose most noble deeds will remain secret, who is all action and no consciousness, who acts and takes the consequences. And who thus needs Psmith, as Bertie will need Jeeves, to get him out of the soup.

The Deus ex machina comes too early in Psmith in the City: when Psmith unaccountably shows up at Mike's bank (the first day), throws down the doubloons to rescue him from his Dickensesque lodgings, and from then on goes before him to make his paths straight. Thus, it's anti-climactic when Psmith enables the trapped sportsman to return to his element of the outdoors, although the reader can be glad for the denoument, that this ghastly read is at last over.

Nevertheless, there are some good lines: "Mike proceeded to the meeting with the air of an about- to- be- washed- dog." Continuing the canine conceit, Mike is doggedly determined and Psmith given unto doggerel in this dog of a novel. But take heart, good reader, with Mike, Psmith and Wodehouse all released from the bank, things will likely get better. "I should jolly well think," as Mike might say, "that they might."

3 out of 5 stars Psorry About Psmith.......2006-12-16

An early effort, which only makes you appreciate the author that Wodehouse would become, Psmith can't hold a candle to any of the Jeeves or Blandings stories.

4 out of 5 stars The First of the Vintage Wodehouse .......2006-12-16

This is the first of the vintage Wodehouse; his previous books are for completists, or public-school story fans, only. Like his earlier work, the plot is still weak (I'm not even sure he had the ending in mind when he began writing), and the two dei ex machina don't really work. But, as in brief parts of the earlier _Mike and Psmith_ (a.k.a. _The Lost Lambs_), the style and characterization--especially of Psmith--start to show the true Wodehouse genius. In particular, Wodehouse starts to make use of his perennial low-style/high style apposition, here usually with Mike and Psmith, later most famously with Wooster and Jeeves.

3 out of 5 stars Funny, but somewhat lacking........2004-04-09

"Psmith in the City" was first published in the U.K. on September 23, 1910. This makes it one of the earlier works by Wodehouse. This particular printing is another from The Collector's Wodehouse series being released by The Overlook Press (in the U.K. it is The Everyman's Wodehouse series from Everyman's Library). These are very nicely produced books, although it isn't clear what criteria they are using to select the order in which his works will be published. For example, this is the second in the Psmith series, and the first has yet to be published.

This particular story centers on Mike Jackson, a Cricket player who is looking forward to going on to the `Varsity at Cambridge. This dream is spoiled when his father loses most of the family's money (no mention of how). Instead Mike goes to work at a Bank where, by chance, Psmith, a friend from cricket, also happens to be starting work on the same day. The bank manager, Mr. John Bickersdyke, is their nemesis in the book. He just happened to ruin Mike's last cricket match by walking across the screen and distracting Mike. This caused him to fall short of his century and lose the match. The situation in this book is very contrived and forced. It is true that many of Wodehouse's situations are contrived, but for me this one seemed much more so. Perhaps it was because there really isn't a plot to this book. Instead there are some humorous situations and interesting characters, but there doesn't really seem to be a story until the final few chapters. There are some very funny parts of this book, but it was far from Wodehouse's best work.

                    5 out of 5 stars A transition book.......2003-12-22

"Psmith in the City" marks something of a transition piece for Wodehouse. Here, two of his principle "School" characters are taken away from the school environment and put into the real world. Psmith is elevated to the principle character quite clearly - a trend which continues in "Psmith, journalist", and of course is entirely dominant in the concluding "Leave it to Psmith", where Mike is relegated to the background.

There is also an element of the autobiographical in this work, for Wodehouse spent his post school days in much the same position as Mike finds himself - working in a city job for which he had little aptitude and did not like. Dulwich College, Wodehouse's school, also makes a cameo appearance.

The character of Psmith (based on a real person, unusually for Wodehouse) lends himself well to Wodehouse's skill at dialogue. Psmith's unique character traits are generally revealed in his conversation, and Wodehouse makes the most of this - certainly more than he was able to in the earlier school settings for Mike and Psmith. The dialogue does not, perhaps, soar to the heights it achieves in "Leave it to Psmith", but this is a distinctly earlier piece of writing. Indeed, the reader is occasionally brought up with a jolt to just how early in the twentieth century this is, with some of the settings and phrasings.

Overall this is a very enjoyable book, and interesting because of the transition role it plays in shifting from the more serious "School" series to the more frivolous work for which Wodehouse is more remembered. The autobiographical aspect is also of interest, and though the historical reminders may shock a little, they are a reminder of how long Wodehouse was writing.

Considering what a prominent figure Mr John Bickersdyke was to be in Mike Jackson’s life, it was only appropriate that he should make a dramatic entry into it. This he did by walking behind the bowler’s arm when Mike had scored ninety-eight, causing him thereby to be clean bowled by a long-hop.

This he did by walking behind the bowler's arm when Mike had scored ninety-eight, causing him thereby to be clean bowled by a long-hop. It was the last day of the Ilsworth cricket week, and the house team were struggling hard on a damaged wicket. During the first two matches of the week all had been well. Warm sunshine, true wickets, tea in the shade of the trees. But on the Thursday night, as the team champed their dinner contentedly after defeating the Incogniti by two wickets, a pattering of rain made itself heard upon the windows. By bedtime it had settled to a steady downpour. On Friday morning, when the team of the local regiment arrived in their brake, the sun was shining once more in a watery, melancholy way, but play was not possible before lunch. After lunch the bowlers were in their element. The regiment, winning the toss, put together a hundred and thirty, due principally to a last wicket stand between two enormous corporals, who swiped at everything and had luck enough for two whole teams. The house team followed with seventy-eight, of which Psmith, by his usual golf methods, claimed thirty.
