Book Description
Shell structures are found abundantly in engineering designs and are routinely analyzed with finite element methods. The objective of this book is to present, in a unified manner, modern finite element procedures for general shell analysis. The first chapters introduce the basic concepts for the analysis of shells, explain the mathematical preliminaries, and discuss the mathematical models of plates and shells including their asymptotic properties. The following chapters deal with finite element discretization methods for plates and shells. At the end of the book, applications of these methods in modern engineering practice are described and an overview of nonlinear shell analysis is given.
Customer Reviews:
A thought-provoking treatise.......2004-09-08
It is an understatement to call this book excellent! Development of robust and reliable computational techniques for shell analysis continues to be a most challenging task. The level of profundity offered by this book on this traditional topic is truly astounding. Mathematical analysis has been wonderfully intertwined with engineering judgement. The presentation is brief and compact with an emphasis on mathematical rigor.
finite element analysis of shells in depth.......2003-12-17
This is the first (and only) book I have come across which gives a deep and comprehensive analysis of finite element methods for shell structures. The authors take a mathematical approach to the problem, and do a very nice job. Traditionally, finite element procedures for shells have been formulated intuitively hence resulting in mixed success. Mathematical analyses of finite element formulations give a deeper and meaningful insight into the underlying mathematical theory and the reasons why some formulations perform much better than others. This deeper mathematical understanding in turn gives better insight into the physical behaviour of shells as limiting cases are approached (i.e thin shells etc.). Research in finite element analysis, including shells, is very much alive and still has a lot of potential. This book is very valuable for people who want to dig further into mathematical aspects of finite element formulations, and are not just content with "coding" an existing formulation. This is not a "recipe" book, but a book which teaches you how to come up with new, mathematically consistent and meaningful formulations.
Useless for most people.......2003-10-02
The book is probably good for researchers. It is however not suitable for beginners or practitioners.
An important reference for shell structure mechanics.......2003-08-27
This book clearly explains shell structure mechanics from a mathematical and practical perspective. As a practicing engineer and finite element user, I found it extremely useful and easy to understand. This is also an invaluable reference for graduate students in applied mechanics. I think it will be a classic reference in that field.
An excellent book on Shells.......2003-08-26
This is an excellent book for anybody interested in the analysis of shells. It uniquely presents the physical and mathematical aspects of shell behavior, and their finite element analysis. I believe this book is a MUST for researchers and practioners.
Book Description
When Scenes of Clerical Life, George Eliot's first novel, was published anonymously in 1857, it was immediately recognized, in the words of Saturday Review, as `the production of a peculiar and remarkable writer'. The three stories that make up the Scenes, `The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton', `Mr Gilfil's Love Story', and `Janet's Repentance', intriguingly foreshadow George Eliot's later work. The first readers, including Dickens and Thackeray, were struck by the humorous irony, the truthfulness of the presentation of the lives of ordinary people, and the compassionate acceptance of human weakness which characterize Eliot's writing.

Book Description
A new edition of George Eliot's earliest published fictional work with a new Introduction and Notes reflecting recent scholarship
These stories, first published in Blackwood's Magazine in 1857, constitute George Eliot's fictional debut. They contain her earliest studies of what became enduring themes in her great novels: the impact of religious controversy and social change on provincial life and the power of love to transform the lives of individual men and women. Although Eliot would have to wait until the publication of her next work, Adam Bede, for fame and fortune, Scenes of Clerical Life won acclaim from a discerning readership, including Charles Dickens, who wrote: "I hope you will excuse my writing to you to express my admiration....The exquisite truth and delicacy, both of the humour and the pathos of those stories, I have never seen the like of." This Penguin Classics edition also features "How I Came to Write Fiction," Eliot's own recollection of her novelistic abilities.
Customer Reviews:
George Eliot's first published fictional work is a neglected gem by the literary genius.......2007-10-08
George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) was born in Warwickshire in 1819. Her father was an estate manager and farmer. Little Mary Ann knew life in rural England. She would make rural Britain during the time of the industrial revolution her main fictional focus. She is the author of great classics "Middlemarch" "Adam Bede" "The Mill on the Floss" "Romola
and "Daniel Deronda/"
Prior to the publication of these classics there is the charming and touching work "Scenes of a Clerical Life." Mary Ann was living without benefit of clergy with the author/scientist/man of letters George Henry Lewes who couldn't divorce his mad wife to mary the homely but brilliant Mary Ann (she spoke seven languages and had written widely on biblical criticism, science, book reviews and essays of erudition and wit). Lewes suggested she try her hand at fiction. The result is this collection of three stories which was published monthly in the liberal "Westminster Review" owned by the Blackwood Family in 1857. It was later published in book form under the pen name of "George Eliot". Charles Dickens was the only critic who correctly observed that these stories had to have been written by a woman.
The three tales are:
1. The Sad Fortunes of the Rev. Amos Barton-The setting for this story as for the other two is the mythical Midlands town of Milby. Barton is an a very average cleryman who is not well liked by his parishoners. He is in dire poverty supporting several children and a sickly wife Millie. When Mrs. Barton dies we see how the church folks support Barton in his grief. The story is short and touching.
2. Mr. Gilfil's Love Story. This second clergyman in the trilogy of tales is a kindhearted old minister of the gospel. Eliot takes us back to 1788 to the story of his lost love for the beautiful Caterina. Caterina was born in Italy to an opera singer. When he died she was taken to England to be raised by a rich family. Her chief purpose is to sing for the family. She falls in love with a wealthy aristocratic soldier who dies. Mr. Gilfil who has loved her all along then marries Caterina. She herself dies in childbirth. Despite his grief Mr. Gilfil ministers for many years to the people in Milby. This tale is a tragic story of love and loss and
redemptive service to other people. Eliot told realistic stories about ordinary people. She is the a novelist of great psychological depth as well as able to puncture the balloons of hypocrisy always afloat in human society.
Janet's Repentance. Janet is a wealthy woman who is also a battered wife. She is married to Mr Dempster who is a wealthy powerful attorney. Dempster is also an incorrigble drunk and wife beater. One night he cast Janet out into the cold. She is rescued by kind friends and the saintly Rev. Mr. Tryan. We see Janet rescued from despair to a life of useful service. We also overhear debates by the townspeople (serving as a Greek chorus in Eliot's works) commenting on the theological controversies of the day.
These three stories would lead to George Eliot's name becoming known in the literary London world and among the reading publis. Soon her authorial star would rise high in the wild blue yonder of literary immortality. Do yourself a favor and read this book.
Eliot's first is still a landmark.......2006-03-03
Eliot's first work here is still surprising in its form, its message, and its outlook. Eschewing the romantic elements of the early-mid 19th century, Eliot embraced (if not practically invented) realism--not necessarily that real life should constitute all texts, but that real people should inhabit them, changing characters, three-dimensional people with which the reader is nearly forced to sympathize. Eliot's narrators are constantly, though never tediously, beckoning our sympathies to these people--drab, regular, nondescript characters which still hold our fervent attention to the end.
I will not speak of the plots here, for you can look elsewhere for that. Suffice it to say that Eliot is the only feminist I will ever read. Her descriptions, always important and vital to the meaning of the story, are utterly incredible. This book is more like poetry in this regard--its imagery, its vibrancy.
If you buy this book, think of some of these questions:
-Why is it called "The Sad Fortunes of Amos Barton" and not "...of Milly Barton"?
-Always keep in mind the muddling of characters and concepts. Are there are any ideal characters in this book, or are nearly all characters both execrable and sympathetic at the same time? If there is an ideal character, why would Eliot do this? (Milly)
-When does Janet make her first appearance in her story? Why?
That's enough. This book isn't read enough. It's a fabulous introduction to Eliot, as well as one of her best works. Her scope here is much more focused than than of her other works, though not to disparage those too much...it's less than 400 pages, whereas Middlemarch is around 1000! Read this, then pick up Middlemarch.
If you want realism, and if you think Henry James isn't very readable, pick up this book.
Tales of Three Clergymen.......2000-04-13
George Eliot's Scenes of Clerical Life consists of three tales involving three separate clergymen in England in the early 1800s. "The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton" is about the financially strapped curate of Shepperton who lacks tact, charm, and learning. Although he is initially unpopular with his parishioners, he earns their affection through his personal misfortune. The second tale, "Mr. Gilfil's Love Story," is about a parson at Shepperton (prior to the time of Amos Barton) who falls in love with Caterina, the daughter of an Italian singer, who, in turn, falls for someone else. When that someone else chooses another woman to be his wife, Mr. Gilfil deals courageously with the devastated Caterina, who is now at "the point of lunacy" because of the rejection. The third tale, "Janet's Repentance," has Reverend Edgar Tryan trying to stir up interest about the Evangelical Church in the religion-indifferent industrial town of Milby. The townfolk vigorously oppose Tryan's efforts in some very dramatic scenes. Janet, a female alcoholic who is frequently beaten by her husband, is at first resistant to Reverend Tryan, but later sees him as a fellow sufferer. She then seeks his guidance for personal problems, with positive results. All three tales are unabashedly sentimental and melodramatic. As this was Eliot's first attempt at fiction, one can see she had a ways to go before she developed the literary perfection that resonates in her later novels like Middlemarch. The tale about Amos Barton is my favorite because Eliot succeeded in making a drab character the hero of a story. The "sad fortunes of" should have been kept out of the title, though, because it suggests only the depressing side of the tale instead of the triumph of character it really is. The way Caterina in the Gilfil tale continues to find her singing the only way to "lift the pain from her heart" points out how a person may deal with grief by relying on an innate talent. The way Janet in the repentance tale goes from a kicked-about drunk to self-actualization is inspiring. Eliot's minor characters, such as the old women, the doctors, and the servants are well drawn, using the speech patterns and vernacular consistent with their respective class or degree of education. Overall, I recommend Scenes of Clerical Life as a fine introduction to George Eliot. However, I feel it is important to read Adam Bede immediately afterwards so one can see how quickly Eliot's ability to write fiction evolved into an art.

Book Description
Dennis Bacchus is a man who has outlived himself. HIV-positive and prepared to die at any minute, he finds himself in the late 1990s blessed with life-giving drugs, supportive friends, a boom economy, and an era of never-ending celebration-and he doesn't know what to do with himself.
For ten years he has traveled and celebrated a curtailed life with the similarly infected Jimmy and, though Dennis was never that close to Jimmy, he decided to let the friendship run its course to the end. Now there's no end in sight. Stuck with leftover friendships, careers, and commitments, what can a man do but become a priest? The Boom Economy covers what was supposed to be the last decade of Dennis Bacchus' life, but turns out to be the first decade of the rest of it. The Boom Economy is a novel about conversion-not just seroconversion or religious conversion, but all of the social, spiritual, and emotional problems of changing from one life to another. At once raucous and serious, pagan and saintly, it's a look at the way we live now. Again.
Customer Reviews:
The Life of Man.......2006-12-24
Bouldrey, Brian. "The Boom Economy". The University of Wisconsin Press, 2006.
Amos Lassen and Literary Pride
Brian Bouldrey is a name that may be familiar to you. He edited the wonderful "Wrestling with the Angel: Faith and Religion in the Lives of Gay Men", one of the first studies of gays and G-d. His new book is a novel entitled "The Boom Economy or, Scenes from Clerical Life". It beautifully depicts the life of man as he waits for death to take him. While he is alive, Dennis is a man who has beaten a death to AIDS because of an accident of science and because his combination of prescribed drugs has kept him alive. He struggles to deal with life while feeling that his death should have already come. In doing we discover his relation to G-d and spirituality.
When we meet Dennis Bacchus we meet a man who feels that life has been a bit unfair for not rewarding him with death. Otherwise his life is joyous. He has wonderful medication to keep the AIDS virus at bay, he is living in a time when the economy is great, he has amazing friends yet he is lost. His friend Jimmy helps him to celebrate life by travel and celebration. Jimmy like Dennis also carries the virus and he and Dennis are fast friends. Dennis however decides it might be time to become a priest.
The storyline was to cover the last ten years of Dennis' life but due to unexpected events instead of being the last ten years, they become the decade that ushers in an entire new life. Bouldrey tells the story beautifully; his command of the English language is almost in a class by itself. His sentences flow like fine wine, meant to be tasted and savored and like wine, each subsequent taste is better than the one before. He writes with a quick wit and sharp compassion and he manages to find humor in what would otherwise be an extremely serious situation.
In this tale of spiritual enlightenment are explorations of love and a definition of what friendship is. It is also a comedy centering on the most droll of subjects--living with AIDS and I have yet to read a book that handles loneliness as beautifully as Bouldrey does. He is amazing in juxtaposing humor with grief when it is least expected. This is a book to be read and remembered. Tender to the point of beauty, funny to the point of hilarity, real to the point of wonderful. It is reverent and irreverent, intelligent and simple, engaging and not easy to forget. Brian Bouldrey has written this book as if he was caring for a dear friend and you can feel his love for his work with every word he writes.
An unexpected second chance at life, but frustrating........2004-01-02
Dennis Bacchus is a middle aged gay man who did his share of partying in the 70's and 80's, and finally gets the courage up to get tested for HIV in 1991. He finds out he is positive, and resolves to make the most out of what he assumes will be the final years of his life. Then the miracle of protease inhibitors becomes a reality, and Dennis (and his best friend/traveling companion Jimmy, who is also positive) gets into a trial program in which he is one of the lucky ones, finding a drug combination that restores his t-cells and makes his viral count undertectable. What he thought would be the end of his life turns out to be the start of a new life he wasn't expecting or prepared for.
At the same time, he made a promise to God to become a priest, if allowed to live. Dennis makes good on his promise, studying to be one of the Jesuit priests he is assigned to assist. Unfortunately, feelings from his "old" life make this new one tough to deal with, and Dennis has to consider if this is indeed the calling for him.
Set primarily in the San Francisco area during the technology boom of the early-mid 1990's, "The Boom Economy, Or Scenes from Clerical Life" covers a decade in the life of a man who alternately feels grateful and cheated, and his colorful friends and acquaintances through which he tries to put his own life in better perspective. Seems realistic to me, as I have several acquaintances who expressed the same kind of frustrated emotions at assuming the end of their life was near, only to be given a new chance thanks to the antiviral drugs, but still realizing the fix could just be temporary. The religious and spiritual dilemma of such frustrations is a great deal of what this novel is about, and would be of primary interest to those who know others in such situations.
