Book Description
Chemiluminescence immunoassay is now established as one of the best alternatives to conventional radioimmunoassay for the quantitation of low concentrations of analytes in complex samples. During the last two decades the technology has evolved into analytical procedures whose performance far exceeds that of immunoassays based on the use of radioactive labels. Without the constraints of radioactivity, the scope of this type of analytical procedure has widened beyond the confines of the specialist clinical chemistry laboratory to other disciplines such as microbiology, veterinary medicine, agriculture, food and environmental testing. This is the first work to present the topic as a subject in its own right.
In order to provide a complete picture of the subject, overviews are presented of the individual areas of chemiluminescence and immunoassay with particular emphasis on the requirements for interfacing chemiluminescent and immunochemical reactions. The possible ways of configuring chemiluminescence immunoassays are described. State-of-the-art chemiluminescence immunoassay systems are covered in detail together with those systems which are commercially available.
The book is aimed at researchers and routine laboratory staff in the life sciences who wish to make use of this high-performance analytical technique and also at those interested in industrial applications of the technology in the food, agricultural and environmental sciences.

In the present work, a highly sensitive chemiluminescence enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA) method for the determination of 17@b-estradiol (E2) in the wastewater was developed, which used the fluorescein-iso-thiocyanate (FITC)-anti-FITC system as solid phase and the biotin-streptavidin system as signal amplification system, with the highly sensitive 4-methoxy-4-(3-phosphatephenyl)-spiro-(1,2-dioxetane-3,2'-adamantane) (AMPPD)-alkaline phosphatase (ALP) system as chemiluminescence detection system. The specific polyclonal antibody was produced against a conjugate of estradiol-bovine serum albumin (BSA), biotinoyl-diaminodioxaoctane-estradiol conjugate was synthesized. The specificity of anti-E2 antibody was also studied. The results showed that anti-E2 antibody has no cross-reactions for estriol, ethinyl E2, estrone commonly coexisting with E2 in the wastewater. Samples were prepared with solid-phase extraction using C"1"8 cartridges for the removal of matrix effects. The linear range was 2.5-1600pgml^-^1 and detection limit was 1.5pgml^-^1. As our known of knowledge, the method was more sensitive for the determination of E2 in water compared with other immunoassay methods. Recoveries were in the range of 80-110% in spiked tap water and wastewater. This method has been successfully used for the detection of E2 in wastewater, compared with the commercially radioimmunoassay (RIA) kit, the correlation was good.

By using human immunoglobulin G (IgG), goat-anti-human IgG and rabbit-anti-goat IgG-functionalized gold nanoparticles as an immunoassay model, a chemiluminescence (CL) detection of gold nanoparticles in biological conjugates has been developed. The assay is based on the sandwich-type immunoreaction coupled with CL reaction of AuCl"4^--luminol-H"2O"2 system. The AuCl"4^-, which is the dissolving product of the gold nanoparticles labeled to the rabbit-anti-goat IgG, served as an analyte in the CL reaction for the indirect measurement of goat-anti-human IgG. The chemiluminescence intensity is proportional to the logarithm of the concentration of goat-anti-human IgG in the range of 5ngml^-^1 to 10@mgml^-^1 and the detection limit (3@s) is 1.5ngml^-^1. This method has been successfully applied to the determination of goat-anti-human IgG immune serum samples. As a new chemiluminescence detection method, it shows significant potential for the determination of biological analytes by labeling nanoparticles.

A chemiluminescence ELISA for the direct detection of ethinylestradiol (EE2) in water at sub-ppt levels was developed and validated. At a signal-to-noise ratio of three the detection limit is 0.2+/-0.1ngL^-^1, at a ratio of 10 the LOQ is found to be 1.4+/-0.8ngL^-^1. Based on a conservatively calculated precision profile the analytical working range is established from 0.8 to 100ngL^-^1. The ELISA was tested in four different matrices, including surface water and effluent of sewage treatment plants. All measurements were validated using an LC-MS/MS method. Typical results were consistent in both methods below 1ngL^-^1. Using this chemiluminescence ELISA facilitates for the first time the direct detection of EE2 at ecotoxicologically relevant concentrations.

This study describes the employment of a novel imidazole-substituted phenol [4-(1-imidazolyl)phenol] as a highly potent signal enhancer in a horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-luminol chemiluminescence (CL) immunoassay. This competitive-type immunoassay for the model antigen fentanyl is based on the use of fentanyl polyclonal antibody immobilized on white microtiter plates and a biotinylated bovine serum albumin (BSA)-fentanyl derivative as a tracer. The latter was detected by means of streptavidin labeled with HRP, resulting in the generation of a high-intensity and relatively stable chemiluminescent signal, immediately after the addition of the substrate solution (NOAS). The developed method fulfilled the requirements of accuracy (percentage recovery ranged from 93.8 to 107%) and precision (intra- and inter-assay CVs were 2.5-5.2 and 4.5-11.9%, respectively). Its plasma detection limit (1.05pgml^-^1) was lower than those of previous immunoassays. The novel assay was compared in terms of sensitivity and concentration range with other common HRP substrate systems: luminol-p-iodophenol-H"2O"2 and TMB-H"2O"2. Finally, the described method was compared with an HRP-fentanyl conjugate-based assay, similar to commercially available kits (SKIT), employing the novel substrate solution for both assays and the differences observed were explained by applying previously described models. The detection limit was 4.82pgml^-^1 for SKIT, recovery values were 94.2-105% and intra- and inter-assay CVs were 2.5-5.2 and 4.5-11.9%, respectively. In conclusion, the proposed assay could be utilized for a wide range of molecules and replace the existing enzyme-labeled antigen-based kits.

Time-resolved electrogenerated chemiluminescence of multidentate phenolic Eu(III) chelates were studied in aqueous solution. 2,6-bis[N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)-aminomethyl]-4-benzoylphenol forms a photoluminescent and electrochemiluminescent Eu(III) chelate, whereas 2,6-bis[N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)-aminomethyl]-4-methyl phenol-chelated Eu(III) turned out to be not luminescent at all. The importance of the redox properties of both the ground and the excited states of the ligands and the central ion is shown. The former chelate shows relatively weak ECL at an oxide-covered aluminum electrode but the ECL intensity can be strongly enhanced by the addition of peroxodisulfate ions. In the presence of 1mM peroxodisulfate ions the ECL lifetime of this chelate is 0.94ms, thus easily allowing time-resolved detection of the chelate. This chelate can be conjugated to antibodies by thioureido linkage and used as an electrochemiluminescent label in immunoassays as a marker which displays long-lived luminescence in the red end of the optical spectrum. The present ECL is mainly based on the ligand sensitized redox excitation of the chelate by analogous pathways to those known from the studies of aromatic Tb(III) chelates but the energy transfer from the emission centers of the aluminum oxide film can also have minor contribution to the excitation of the label.

The Classic Queueing Theory Text.......1999-11-08
Fundamentals of Queueing Theory (third edition) by D. Gross and C. Harris is THE classic queueing text book. It is up-to-date, thorough, rigorous, intuitive, and even fun to read (for the mathematically inclined). This book can be read at different levels, none of them easy. It is intended for an audience of graduate students in operations research, industrial engineering, management science, or mathematics. There are other excellent queueing books out there, but this has to be the overall best seller! Highly recommended.

It is a textbook for a course I am taking.
I have read 28 pages. It is not easy to
read at all. It seems that the authors really want to
use as few number of words as possible. So
I have to think about and try to understand each sentence.
If I spend 1 hour on a similar other book, then I have
to spend 1.5 hour on this book for the same
amount of content.

Rimbaud at his best........2006-06-14
After reading his Illuminations, I decided that I definitely wanted to encounter more of Arthur Rimbaud. I was intrigued by his creative proposition that in order to become engaged with existence the poet must place himself at variance with life. This positioning of the poet in surging counter-subjectivity to life is somewhat Hegelian in that it induces not only a creative synthesis but suffering as its essential Muse. While A Season in Hell is mature Rimbaud toward the end of his life, the Drunken Boat is clearly his finest individual poem. One discovers a symbolic clarity in this single work that summarizes his amazing thirst for life and the human condition in a brief poem of only 25 stanzas. This really is a magnificent work reminiscent of Blake with a style and a passion that transformed his genre and left him immortal. I earnestly invite you to read this telling, visually rich and important work by a major poet of immense talent. It will broaden the palette through which you perceive the brush strokes and colors of your life's impressions.
One of the greatest poets of all time........2005-06-21
The way words are used in this book is akin to the brush strokes of Monet. It doesn't get much better. I have read this book over 100 times and I still find little jems in Rimbaud's writting that give context to the times in which he lived. I recommend this book to people who love European history and want an emotional connection added to their knowledge of dates and timelines.
The subject matter of "A Season in Hell" may turn off the average reader. This is because the autobiographic tale deals with Rimbaud's liaisons with French poet Paul Verlaine. There escapades around Europe were at one time all the rage.
The painful experience gave Rimbaud (still a teenager and consider one of the greatest poets in France, if not Europe) material for this short passionate piece known as "A Season in Hell." The prose is dreamlike, like a long poem of beautiful words strung together, and yet the subject matter is more of a nightmare.
I prefer this book because it ends with "The Drunken Boat." The interpretation I get from this poem is of a young Rimbaud tired of an artists life, and longing for something more savage, and real. In his own life, he soon left France after writing this poem, and went to Africa where he made a career as a weapon's dealer.
Passionate, Painful, Agonizing and Surreal.......2004-02-06

What an amazing passionate book of prose and poetry! It's alive with pain, chaos and joy, screaming in anguish in streaming movement that is pouring out of the pages in utter agonizing derision and pain, flowing in surreal release of tension and expression.
The beginning of the book has a short bio and although short and concise, it vaguely talks about how scandalous Rimbaud and his companion Verlaine were in descriptive sexual analogy, refusing to use the word "sexual" and "lover."
Here was a young man who found a gay lover 20 years his senior and traveled in complete uncertainty and insecurity, a "Faustian Man," such as Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's 'On The Road.' Rimbaud was a man who lived in the present moment of risk, spontaneity and the faith to walk in uncertainly and courageously. And this of course brings true living over the comfort zone of existing, which accompanies such an artist with intense pain, guilt, creativity, joy, hurt, anguish and exploding passions. The pages reek with chaotic artistic surrealism.
This man was a rare creator. An outcast of society, a vagabond in decadence and carousing avenging scandal, however a living man of flowing movement, unlike our dead, civilized and rational society. And for this, the man and his poetry snubbed and forgotten, only to be noticed at a later time and recognized for its aesthetic, passionate value. This is typical with almost all true creators of autonomous ability and dangerous living.

"Boredom is no longer my love. Rages, debauchery, madness, - I have known all their soarings and their disasters, - My whole burden is laid down. Let us contemplate undazed the extent of my innocence. I would no longer be capable of begging the solace of a bastinado. I don't fancy myself embarked on a wedding with Jesus Christ as father-in-law. I am not a prisoner of my reason. I said: God, I want freedom in salvation: how am I to seek it? Frivolous tastes have left me. No more need of devotion or of divine love. No more regrets for the age of render hearts. Each of us has his reason, scorn and charity; I reserve my place at the top of that angelic ladder of common sense. As for established happiness, domestic or not . . . no, I cannot. I am too dissipated, too weak. Life flourishing through toil, old platitude! As for me, my life is not heavy enough, it flies and floats far above action, that precious focus of the world. What an old maid I am getting to be, lacking the courage to be in love with death! Classic translation.......2002-10-24
This is one of the better translations of a Season in Hell. It's very faithful to the original French without compromising its poetry; many of the passages are nothing short of brilliant. Also, it's a bilingual edition for those who are either able or willing.
However, Varese struggles a bit under the poetic demands of the Drunken Boat. For example:

I can no longer, bathed in your languors, O waves,
Obliterate the cotton carriers' wake,
Nor cross the pride of pennants and of flags,
Nor swim past prison hulk's hateful eyes!
>> But trust me, for the superb quality of translation in A Season in Hell, this book's well worth the price.
Essential Rimbaud.......1999-10-14
This book is an essential portrayal of Rimbaud's most celebrated works. It includes a brief biography of Rimbaud. It is a great introduction to works by poets of that genre. People who enjoy this will also like Baudelaire and Verlaine. I recommend it highly.
