      Book Description

Text extracted from opening pages of book: CHEMICAL SYNTHESIS Studies in the Investigation of Natural Organic Products BY HARRY D. Sc.( Lond.), F. I. C. A Member of the Research Staff of Nobel Industries, Ltd. BLACKIE AND SON LIMITED 50 OLD BAILEY, LONDON; GLASGOW, BOMBAY 1924 Printed and bound tn Great Britain PREFACE In this work I have attempted to describe the more important investigations which have been made by the organic chemist in modern times in the domain of natural organic products. The book covers only a limited field of organic chemistry, and even this is but partially surveyed. During recent years the study of natural organic products has attracted chemists in increasing numbers. The results already obtained have opened out almost infinite possibilities and have brought us face to face with new modes of chemical reaction about which we know very little as yet. On account of the nature of the subject-matter and the fact that the book is intended ' for those who have a knowledge of organic chemistry at least equal to that required for a pass B. Sc. degree, the usual textbook arrangement has not been adopted. I am indebted to Messrs. Merck, Schimmel & Co., and particularly to the Wellcome Research Bureau, for information which they have kindly placed at my disposal. Also, my thanks are due to Professor R. M. Caven, the general editor of the series, for many valuable suggestions, and to my chief, Mr. W. Rintoul, F. I. C., Head of the Nobel Research Laboratories, for the interest which he has taken in the preparation of the book. Finally, I am indebted to my wife for her help in preparing the book for the press. H. HEPWORTH. THE RESEARCH LABORATORIES, ARDEER, March, 1924. EDITOR'S NOTE After many years of neglect chemistry is at length being recog nized in this country as one of the most important factors of modern life. Evidence of this recognition is shown by the increased notice which the subject is receiving in the public press, and by the large numbers of books that are being issued on various aspects of the science. It is now clearly seen that chemical science contributes to the health, comfort, luxury, and intellectual life of the modern citizen. It is a difficult task, nevertheless, to bring the latest achieve ments of chemistry within the reach of minds untutored in its first principles; though this task should be attempted by those best qualified to perform it. The purpose of the present series of manuals, however, is to provide for those who have a working knowledge of chemistry for graduates in science and medicine, for workers in various branches of applied chemistry, for teachers, and for all who have an intellectual interest in the science for its own sake readable accounts of modern developments written by experts in the subjects with which they deal. Organic chemistry as a science is not yet one hundred years old; it is still four years to the centenary of the synthesis of urea by Wohler; yet how amazing has been the advance in our knowledge during ninety-six years! Having started with the study of natural products, the exponents of this branch of chemistry, by elaborating artificial derivatives of the hydrocarbons, have deviated far from the path pursued by Nature herself. Nevertheless throughout this period there have always been chemists to whom the natural products of the plant and animal world themselves proved the main attraction, chemists who studied these products because they were part of Nature, irrespective of whether the study would bring any kind of gain beyond the knowledge itself. Of the labours and discoveries vii viii EDITOR'S NOTE of these chemists, Dr. Hepworth gives an account in the present volume. This account begins where Nature begins, with the photo synthesis of plant products; it continues with the study of chloro phyll and other natural pigments, and of the formation of carbo hydrates, tannins, oils, fats, and waxes. After notice of the terpenes, and then of the amino acids

                      5 out of 5 stars Math Handbook.......2007-08-03

I was impressed by the fact that this book links mathematics. Rather than having many text books that include the development of the equation I am looking for, this book is organized to allow me to find the equation quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Outstandingly clear and easy to use.......2007-04-25

The more I use this book the more I like it. I use five "handbook-type" sources: this book, the old NBS handbook, the handbook by Bronshtein and Semendatyev, MathWorld on line, and Wikipedia on line; all have their virtues, and I would not do without any one of them. The great virtue of the CRC handbook is not that it's complete, which it isn't, and which no handbook can hope to be. Rather, given that the use of a handbook is to fill in missing facts or techniques in one's knowledge, that I can understand almost anything in the CRC handbook by reading it just once, without having to cross-reference to other sources or other parts of the book. This is an extremely difficult thing to achieve, and I tip my hat to the contributors and editors for doing it so well.

Inevitably, the book pays a price for this. It's most notable in Chapter 8, "Scientific Computing", which is remarkably clear, at the expense of detailed discussion. Fine; so be it. At least I can understand everything it says. Given my druthers, I might have omitted some things from the book to make space for more thorough coverage of certain topics. My criterion wold be based on the assumption that anyone who refers to this volume with any frequency can be presumed to have a reasonably good scientific pocket calculator, so that those things that can be determined by a few keystrokes on a calculator could be safely omitted from this handbook. For example, although a discussion of indefinite integrals and a list of some of the less obvious ones is clearly appropriate, my pocket calculator will disgorge 95% of those listed in a 36-page table in this book if I just enter the integrand and ask for the indefinite integral by a single comand. Hence, my own preference would be to limit the list in the handbook to perhaps 5 pages, including discussion, and use that space to give more coverage to special functions and the relationships among those. But that's purely a matter of personal preference.

An additional advantage of this handbook is that it's inexpensive, considering how much it contains. I get discouraged by the prevalence of technical books that I could really use, but which sell for so much that I can only consult them in my local library or get them on interlibrary loan. This book is inexpensive enough so that any techie who wants a copy can have his or her own. I wish there were more like it.

More tables than you could ever want. Could use a little more detail on things such as tan, cos, sin tables instead of just every 5 degrees.

4 out of 5 stars Still great, but somethings missing.......2007-01-19

This is still a great resource. However, this edition leaves out many of the tables (though a calculator will generate them) and the information on basic geometric shapes (e.g., volume, area) is difficult to use as a quick reference. The book puts too much emphasis on analytical geometry which makes this version harder for engineers to use. Still is a great value.

5 out of 5 stars Another CRC Standard.......2007-01-17

The mathematician's "Bible." Great reference book it is; textbook it's not. Not only are equations listed, but some guidelines are provided as to how and when equations apply. Healthy amount of integrals and trig identities are listed that you probably can't find anywhere else. Chances are, "If it can be integrated, then it's in here." Chaos theory and fuzzy logic are addressed. You name it, this book has it. Great for the calculus, physics, and trigonometry students.

                      Book Description

Twenty years ago Chelsea Green published the first trade edition of The Man Who Planted Trees, a timeless eco-fable about what one person can do to restore the earth. The hero of the story, Elzéard Bouffier, spent his life planting one hundred acorns a day in a desolate, barren section of Provence in the south of France. The result was a total transformation of the landscape-from one devoid of life, with miserable, contentious inhabitants, to one filled with the scent of flowers, the songs of birds, and fresh, flowing water.
Since our first publication, the book has sold over a quarter of a million copies and inspired countless numbers of people around the world to take action and plant trees. On National Arbor Day, April 29, 2005, Chelsea Green is releasing a special twentieth anniversary edition with a new foreword by Wangari Maathai, winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize and founder of the African Green Belt Movement.

5 out of 5 stars A book about the essence of life.......2007-02-11

One can read this book in less than an hour. That hour can be an exquisite calming experience, and one that talks about alternative ways of achieving satisfaction, while contributing to the place where he lives. It's not really a Johnny Appleseed book, even though it is about planting trees. Rather, it is about contributing to the health of the Earth, while contributing to the health of the individual.

5 out of 5 stars Hope and humanity.......2005-09-30

I think the publisher wrote the perfect review for this book. It is a book about planting seeds and the seeds of life and what can happen when we give in the most humane, natural way. When nature and the human spirit work as one. The illustrations are a beautiful compliment to the writer. It makes a perfect gift and will inspire those who read it.

                        Book Description

The first few years of the 90s have been extremely important for the development of software copyright both in the United States and Europe. In the United States, major decisions redefined the idea/expression dichotomy in different cases. In Europe, countries are still in the process of harmonizing their national laws with the EC Software Directive. The study compares traditional and evolving copyright standards as applied to computer programs on both sides of the Atlantic. It may well be said that recent case law has brought America closer to Europe. On the other hand, American experience turns out to be a useful guideline for distinguishing between the concepts of idea and expression in the sense of the software directive.
