Book Description
The book highlights the latest developments of new catalysts for stereoselective metathesis and catalysts with considerable functional group tolerance which have permitted the synthesis of novel materials. It also shows that these new catalysts in addition to Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerisation (ROMP), Acyclic Diene Metathesis (ADMET), and Cross metathesis (CM) are now powerful tools for Ring Closing Metathesis (RCM) which has found many applications in the synthesis of natural products.

Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Transition Metal Catalyzed Polymerizations held in 1986. The papers provide a broad-based perspective covering recent scientific and technological advances in Ziegler-Natta and metathesis polymerization, including olefin, diene, and acetylene polymerization, and copolymerization. The emphasis on reaction kinetics of polymerizations in different reagent and catalyst environments makes this volume of interest to both academic and industrial researchers.

From the author: Constant shear rate rheokinetics was used to evaluate the polymerization of four norbornene-based monomer systems as candidate healing agents in self-healing composites: endo-dicyclopentadiene (endo-DCPD), exo-DCPD, 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB), and a 1:1 volume mixture of endo-DCPD:ENB. The ruthenium catalyst induced ring-opening metathesis polymerization of the healing agent candidates were measured experimentally under isothermal conditions while the influences of several different variables were considered (e.g., test temperature, catalyst concentration, catalyst form). Analyzing the increase in viscosity during the polymerization, comparisons of the reaction kinetics of the different monomers were quantified by defining two parameters, [t.sub.t] and [DELTA]t, which correspond to the polymerization initiation and propagation rates respectively. Generally, ENB shows the fastest polymerization kinetics, and endo-DCPD the slowest. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 46:1804-1811, 2006. [c] 2006 Society of Plastics Engineers

Book Description
This comprehensive text links abstract mathematics to engineering applications in order to provide a clear and thorough exploration of fluid dynamics. Focus is on the development of mathematical models of physical phenomena and the wide range of technologies available to students. Filled with examples and problems inspired by real engineering applications, this resource will not only teach, but motivate students to further emerge themselves in the field.
Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners?.......2003-10-22
I read this book first when preparing tutorials in fluid mechanics for 3rd-year chemical engineering students. Maybe there are other textbooks which give more detailed derivations (although I'd like to see them!), but Middleman's text is one of the extremely rare books where mathematical derivations are balanced with detailed accounts of the motivation behind it all. In fluid mechanics, it seems almost unique in this respect, and I found it a pleasure to read.
Crazy.......2003-10-13
I am a junior chemical engineer taking a class that is using this book. This book is awful. The examples are made to be over complicated, and the problems at the end of each chapter are vague, and full with clarity issues. I would not suggest this book to anyone, and i pity those who are subject to its fury.
Very hard book!.......2001-12-15
This book is very hard to understand. The author uses very complex mathematics, that most graduate and professors don't even understand. When coming up with the formula he skips steps that he assumes everyone knows how to do. This book would be ok for graduate students, but for an introduction to fluid dynamics it is a very difficult book. The book does have a lot of examples on different types of systems that will be useful if you ever use that kind of system. The book does have examples for a wide variety of engineers (ie bioengineers, mechanical, civil...). But overall this book was very difficult!!!

Customer Reviews:
A Great Summer Read...yet so much more!.......2007-07-19
I titled my review, "A Great Summer Read..." because I thought that was what it would be when I began the book. Something wispy and beachy and all about the South Carolina (SC) low country. It wound up being so much more. While not a great work of literature in the classic sense - this is very fine writing indeed. At times the book takes on a sort of eternal mythology to it as the protagonist, Caro Venable, comes to terms with grief in her life, her losses, her marriage and more. It is about this woman discovering herself for perhaps the first time...learning to breathe from the depths of her soul. The plot focuses on a community in SC that her husband has developed/built and her responsibilities as the builder's wife to welcome all new residents with proper, ladylike SC charm despite her own inner grief and misery. She feels out of place all the time and seeks refuge at a house/shack that her deceased grandfather left to her on a far distant tip of the island where life is VERY different from the snobbery of the nouveau riche she mothers further inland. In so many ways the shack and the tip of the island represent a kind of primeval part of the soul lost to all of us; an older, harder yet purer way of life where people and community and nature are most important above all things. I found this to be one of the most moving and beautiful books I have read. Yes there are parts I could dig and pick at such as the fate of Luis Cassels: a worker for Caro's husband. Still I would very much recommend this book.
Find What You'd Die For . . ........2006-11-28
. . . And then live for it. This is the general message of this rather melodramatic tale set in the South Carolina Low Country. The narrator and heroine, Carolyn "Caro" Venable suffers from the loss of her young daughter and deals with her grief with bourbon and a paint brush while spending time at her refuge, a home on "her island," a property left to her by her late grandfather. The island is home to wild ponies and a Gullah settlement, and Caro's role in this story is to fight to save the integrity of the island and the homes of the inhabitants, while her husband, Clay, and his villainous sidekick, Hayes, attempt to develop it behind her back.
On the island, she meets Luis Cassells, a Cuban refuge, and his tragic granddaughter, Lita. Her allegiance to them ultimately overpowers her relationship with her husband, and the whole thing makes Clay--the dashing and ambitious newcomer who once swept her off her feet--ultimately seem like the equivalent of a wet-fish handshake. He, like all the secondary characters, are stereotyped and boring. With the introduction of each, particularly a young new employee of Clay's company named Sophia Bridges, there's a hint of tension that caught my interest; however, each character flattens out as the story lapses into excessive description and back-story. After page 250, I found myself speed-reading and skimming just to move the plot along to a mostly predictable and unsatisfying ending.
Very readable in a formulaic, commercial fiction style . . . but not the kind of literature I live for, and overall I felt reading it was a waste of time.
From the author of "A Line Between Friends," McKenna Publishing Group.
a wonderful summer read.......2006-07-18
Having only previously read "Fault Lines", it was a great delight to discover Low Country, and numerous other Siddons books. Low Country does show us some of the beauty of the coastal islands and the people who live there.... very much live Dorothea Benton Frank... I don't know if the authors are one and the same.... but they appear as though they could be--- which is fine with me, as books by each(?) author are entrancing and give great satisfaction to this reader-- though they have caused me to have a terrific urge to go visit the area of the ACE BASIN and the off-shore islands, and that is giving me unrest until this is accomplished!
Caro Loved Her Island and Fought for It.......2004-11-13
I've read many of Anne Rivers Siddons books. This one wasn't really my favorite of all, but it kept me interested enough to stick with the story.
Caroline Venable had the lovely island plantation which she inherited from her grandfather whom she was very close to. But when her husband's company threatened to buy it out, and make a theme park out of it, Caroline had to fight every step of the way for it. But her fight won't be won without some hurt feelings along the way. Hopefully, she and Clay's marriage will survive her fight for the land.
Reading at it's highest.......2003-11-02
I guess I am coming to this book a couple years after the crowd. I thought it was just great. A wonderful story, and so richly told. I can't think of a negative thing about it, unless it was the tragic death near the very end. I could have read on and on in this story.
