Book Description
The chapters presented in Secondary Metabolism in Model Systems are a microcosm of what the recent completion, or near completion, of various genome projects are enabling biochemists to understand not only about control and regulation of secondary metabolism, and how various pathways relate to each other, but also about its relation to primary metabolism. A major paradigm shift is occurring in the way researchers need to view "secondary" metabolism in the future. It is also clear that model systems, such as the ones discussed in the symposium, are providing new information and insight almost faster than researchers can process it!
The volumes in this series contain articles on developing topics of interest to scientists, students and individuals interested in recent developments in the biochemistry, chemistry and molecular biology of plants.
· An excellent series volume covering the advances in understanding of gene functions, a high profile area of research due to recent genome projects
· This book provides essential information on new model systems available to biochemists
· The chapters in this volume are based on the papers presented in the symposium entitled "Secondary Metabolism in Model Systems"
Book Description
Authors Ita G. G. Kreft and Jan de Leeuw have provided the first accessible and practical guide to using multilevel models in social research. Multilevel approaches are becoming increasingly important in social, behavioral, and educational research and it is clear from recent developments that such models are seen as more realisticùand potentially more revealingùthan ordinary regression models. While other books describe these multilevel models in considerable detail none focus on the practical issues and potential problems of doing multilevel analyses that are covered in Introducing Multilevel Modeling. The authorsÆ approach is user-oriented, keeping formal mathematics and statistics to a minimum. Other key features include the use of worked examples using real data sets, analyzed using the leading computer package for multilevel modeling.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent theoretical introduction to Hierchical Linear Models.......2005-09-10
As a foreword, I am a 2nd year psychology graduate student with ANOVA and multiple regression experience.
That said, I've found this work to be clear, precise, and straight-forward in introducing the logic and concepts behind why one would wish to use a hiearchical linear model, as well as the foundation of said statistical design. The lack of emphasis on heavy math-based calculations will undoubtedly expedite training and use for those in the behavioral sciences. On that same note, formulae are interjected only when necessary and more often clarify than confuse a given point or concept.
The only drawback of this text might be imparting exactly how one performs HLM. There are other books on the market that, though more technical and/or less clear, provide the heavy emphasis on analysis that this book does not quite have.
Even so, I am firmly convinced that there is no better book for HLM in terms of laying out the theoretical foundation. An added bonus for me was the fact that ANOVA and regression are richly elaborated upon--a feature that many graduate students might appreciate as a refresher.
In short, I highly recommend this book.
Good intro Multilevel modeling - uses "Englishlike" language.......2004-12-21
I liked the "comman-man-language" used by the authors to explain Multilevel Modeling. The use of MLn software, which is nearly 50% of the book, was a damper. With the commercial world dominated by SAS and SPSS, I would have liked the authors to give the examples for use with SAS
User friendly!.......2001-05-11
This book is the best intro to the subject that I've seen. The authors minimize the use of notation, mathematics and the like, and invoke the reader's intuition by developing some good, concrete examples. They present those examples as datasets (accessible on the web), as "run" regressions (i.e. with parameter estimates and standard errors), and graphically.
They also demo how to "run" each of the examples on a PC, using the program MLn. If you don't use MLn (and I had never heard of it); this part of the book is less helpful. It would be great if, in an accompanying website perhaps, they were to demo the same analyses using other packages (e.g. SYSTAT, SAS and the like). But this book is really quite good, and a terrific addition to any applied social scientist's library.
reasonable overview of a burgeoning technique.......2000-04-06
When analysing data, the relationships between people that belong in the same classroom, live in the same street or suburb, are part of the same family or therapy group, etc., are often ignored. Multilevel or hierarchical linear modelling is a statistical technique for taking into account such dependencies, arranged in hierarchies (e.g., correlations between students within classrooms, correlations between classrooms within schools, correlations between schools within school districts). In other words, multilevel modeling techniques attempt to model the hierarchical relationships that are found in the real world. In the last 10 years or so there has been a growing number of books and software packages concerned with multilevel analyses. Introducing Multilevel Modeling is shorter and slightly less 'mathematical' than most and gives quite a good introduction to the subject. The book makes reference to the British MLn (MLWiN) computer program in its examples, whereas an introductory text arguably should have used the HLM program, for which a cutdown student version is available free. Taking group dependencies into account is extremely important, but unfortunately many researchers will be discouraged by the dry and heavy-going feel of these texts, which is so often the case with anything involving statistical theory. A highly approachable and readable book remains to be written, but Introducing Multilevel Modeling is probably the best of the current crop.
Book Description
This is a practical introduction to multilevel analysis suitable for all those doing research. Most books on multilevel analysis are written by statisticians; those books are difficult for non-mathematical researchers. In contrast, this volume provides an accessible account on the practical application of multilevel analysis in research. Many worked examples, with computer output, are given to illustrate and explain this subject. Datasets of the examples are available on the internet, so the reader can reanalyze the data. This approach will help bridge the conceptual and communication gap that exists between researchers and statisticians.
Customer Reviews:
Enough for you to get acquainted with these models.......2007-01-11
The book is easy to understand and presents a series of situations where multilevel models are applied, in the context of epidemiological analysis. The examples are mostly very simple, and I don't think the book will help if you want to fit models. If you want to understand them better, then it may be of use. I have some other restrictions as well - some concepts presented in chapter 2 (section 2.8.1) are in direct contradiction with MLwiN user's guide (version 2, 2005, section 7.5, p.86). My understanding is that the latter is correct. Also, a model fitted in chapter 3 with a dichotomous variable random at level 2 includes the covariance parameter, what looks wrong to me. All in all, I think there are better options for an introductory text, e. g. Snijders & Bosker (1999).
A Practical Guide.......2006-12-04
A good introduction to multilevel analysis that addresses the practical issues that confront researchers.
A friendly guilde to multilevel analysis.......2006-11-05
Twisk's work is very good for those who are not experts in mathematics and would like to apply this statistic method for investigating cluster effect. Through the tutorial journey mainly illustrated by MLwiN, readers can easily catch the general picture of multilevel analysis and make sense of interpretation and application. The comparison of different statistic software used in multilevel analysis and the concise text for power analysis were another two precious gifts the author gave us.
Book Description
This new edition of this classic incorporates the most recent thinking on methodology and software, as well as the latest literature on multilevel statistical models. Topics covered by multilevel models have increased in recent years, and the methods are widely applied in the social sciences as well as in areas such as epidemiology, geography, education, surveys, and medicine. This third edition includes chapters on meta analysis, factor analysis and structural equation models, and has expanded sections on MCMC methods.
Book Description
New statistical tools are changing the ways in which scientists analyze and interpret data and models. Many of these are emerging as a result of the wide availability of inexpensive, high speed computational power. In particular, hierarchical Bayes and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods for analysis provide consistent framework for inference and prediction where information is heterogeneous and uncertain, processes are complex, and responses depend on scale. Nowhere are these methods more promising than in the environmental sciences. Models have developed rapidly, and there is now a requirement for a clear exposition of the methodology through to application for a range of environmental challenges.

Description:
This research introduces a novel application of a constrained multivariate response multilevel model of land use. Methodological objectives are (1) to examine the conceptual specification of a multilevel model of land use and (2) to incorporate constraints in multilevel model estimation to reflect the ipsative nature of land use as a response. The substantive objective is to demonstrate and report multilevel results from a representative sample of farm plots (fincas) in 1999 nested in 59 communities throughout the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon. Results indicate that population pressure, labor, and accessibility and proximity between households and communities are strong predictors of land use. Communities are seen to significantly influence land use at the finca level through unobserved and observed structural effects. We conclude with four recommendations to apply multilevel models: (1) consider alternative types of multilevel models to better match land use data distributions; (2) test and control for spatial autocorrelation; (3) collect the best data possible at higher levels; and (4) consider further integration of remotely sensed and household survey data using a multilevel framework.

Book Description
The Ladies' Paradise (Au Bonheur des Dames) recounts the spectacular development of the modern department store in late nineteenth century Paris. The store is a symbol of capitalism, of the modern city, and of the bourgeois family; it is emblematic of consumer culture and the changes in sexual attitudes and class relations taking place at the end of the century. Octave Mouret, the store's owner-manager, masterfully exploits the desires of his female customers. In his private life as much as in business he is the great seducer. But when he falls in love with the innocent Denise Baudu, he discovers she is the only one of the salesgirls who refuses to be commodified. This new translation of the eleventh book in the Rougon-Macquart cycle captures the spirit of one of Zola's greatest novels of the modern city.
Customer Reviews:
Classic novel for this century.......2006-04-13
The Ladies Paradise written in the nineteenth century rings true of today's consumerism. Emile Zola examines in this socialistic novel the effects of consumerism on customers and employees. The customers who are women are drawn to the items that are displayed on the tables. Octave Mouret, the storeowner, knows what women desire and sets forth to use it to bring in profits. The lace, stockings, velvet are feminine fabrics that entice women to spend money, even if they don't have it.
As a retail employee, I have dealt with customers who don't have the money to buy the items but want to get it. I am a customer who buys what is displayed because I think it is going to be an investment. I can relate to small stores like Uncle Baudu's. Businesses like his struggle to stay afloat amongst corporate expansion. They entice clients with their sales and bargains--things that I look for when I shop. Small stores can provide what the big stores don't have. One way or the other, the consumer can get some sort of balance. Working at both a community store and a corporate store, one thing that matters most to customers is service. Customers want to be treated with respect and they expect sales associate to be enthused and answer their questions; even if it is trivial.
Denise Baudu, a simple country girl, arrives in Paris to get a job at her uncle's drapery shop. To her disappointment he doesn't have a job for her because his store is losing customers to the Ladies Paradise. The mall provides goods that are cheaper than the small shops and have a selection of fabrics not only from the mother country, but imported from Asia. He suggests to his niece that she get a job there.
The store fascinates her but she does feel some betrayal towards her uncle. Her uncle's business, along with the small stores, are struggling to stay afloat. With the expansion of the mall, these stores are forced to close because they can't compete with them. Uncle Baudu's hopes of his business staying for the long haul are shattered.
Denise is at first, shy and awkward. She is the target of cruel and malicious slander from the employees including assistant buyer Madame Aurelie. Zola unfolds the lives of the sales employees. The money they make in retail isn't sufficient to support them. The women take to prostitution. Claire has three men supporting her material needs. Pauline befriends Denise and suggests that she get herself a lover to support her financially. Denise doesn't take that advice because it is not in her interest to be a prostitute. She is determined to keep herself and her family together without falling apart which makes the women envious of her.
The novel is centered around an actual person Aristide Boucicaut who founded Le Bon Marche which remains today at the center of Parisian culture. Denise is believed to be the model of his wife Marguerite. Zola puts into a social perspective that exists til this day.
Under the Wheels of the Juggernaut.......2006-02-06
THE LADIES' PARADISE is a sequel to POT LUCK (POT-BUILLE), which I read last year. Both have Octave Mouret as a central character. In the earlier novel, he was a young salesman on the make, both in his profession and with the young women in his apartment building. At the end of POT LUCK, he marries the owner of a successful drapery establishment. At the start of PARADISE, his wife has died; and Octave has entered on an expansion program from drapery into a department store named the Ladies' Paradise that threatens all the other shopkeepers selling clothing and accessories in the area.
Enter Denise Baudu, a country girl from Normandy, who moves to Paris with her two brothers after one of them has gotten in trouble back home. Her uncle runs a store called Au Vieil Elbeuf, selling drapery and flannels, but is unable to give her room or a job because business is threatened by the presence of the Ladies' Paradise across the street. Denise finds a job at the Paradise at the risk of angering her relatives.
Salesgirls at the Paradise live in a dormitory on the top floor of the department store. Room and board is part of the job, plus a token wage and commissions on sales over quota. Little does Denise know she had entered into a whirlwind of gossip and backbiting. She is made fun of by her fellow workers, but Mouret resists getting rid of her because he is drawn to her. At one point, however, two of Mouret's "spies" in management come upon Denise and a young salesman from her region who has sheepishly fallen in love with her and kisses her hand as head axe-wielder Bourdoncle watches. Denise is promptly dismissed.
As Denise finds another position in a less profitable store than the Paradise, the focus turns more to Mouret, who did not know of her dismissal. Mouret plans a large-scale expansion of the store and calls upon Baron Hartman (in real life, Baron Haussmann) to allow him frontage on the new boulevard being cut through the neighborhood.
One day, Mouret runs into Denise on the street and asks her to consider returning to the Paradise, which is just as well as the store where Denise had started to work was going under. To sweeten the offer, Mouret makes her an assistant buyer in the new children's wear department. With her enhanced status, Denise is now winning admiration from her co-workers, though some backbiters remain. In the meantime, Mouret's passion for her is growing -- despite Denise not encouraging it in any way.
There are several set pieces in the novel which are a feature of Zola's fiction. They come under the heading of giant mechanisms that grind people down. In GERMINAL, it was a coal mine; in POT LUCK, an apartment building; in HUMAN BEAST, railroads; and in THE BELLY OF PARIS, the food market at Les Halles. In every Zola novel, there are scenes showing off some giant mechanism at work crushing people under it like the wheels of a Juggernaut. In PARADISE, these scenes are highly successful sales which show a crush of frenetically spending customers and overwhelmed sales clerks as Mouret keeps "pushing the envelope" of what is possible in the apparel business. Even wealthy shoppers who came "just to look" are caught up in the frenzy and leave the store having committed themselves to buy more than what they could afford.
The owners of neighboring shops feel that the Paradise is like a hungry beast that strives to devour their businesses and put them out in the street. Which is exactly what happens. Denise's cousin Genevieve dies of consumption after her lover Colomban -- the main hope of Au Vieil Elbeuf -- runs away to chase a slutty Paradise shopgirl who is one of Mouret's cast-offs, and who doesn't even want him. Aunt Baudu follows her daughter soon after. When as the result of a series of sharp moves, Mouret buys their properties, the shopkeepers are evicted; and Uncle Baudu goes to a nursing home, completely dazed and broken.
Eventually, Denise and Mouret do hook up, but on Denise's terms. The novel ends as they announce their upcoming marriage.
I have found that the ten or so Zola novels I have read have been of a uniform high quality, such that I have difficulty recommending one over the other (though I have a particular fondness for NANA). THE LADIES' PARADISE is an excellent read and paints a fascinating picture of life in the emerging Paris department stores of the late 19th century.
The Ladies Paradise.......2004-12-08
After reading the book for an art class I was suprized to find out that I actually enjoyed the book, it had quite a twist to the department store/love story. I think Zola's description of the scenes were wonderful and helped me use my inmagination better. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes learning about Paris bourgeous life and the mechanical system of the department stores. Definitly a good read.
Amazing insight into modern life-essential reading.......2004-05-24
any one who has started a business or has worked in a business should read this book. It clearly outlines all marketing principles, sales psychology and the benefits of being in distribution rather then production. Amazing. Grow your mind and read.
Nothing New Under The Sun ? Re-Read The Novel.......2003-05-10
With his Rougon-Macquart series, Emile Zola established the family saga. He put into naturalistic prose and photographic narrative the tales of a family and how their lives are affected by their surroundings. In L'Assomoir, he focused on the lives of the Provencals, those who live in the French countryside, whose lives may appear peaceful and orderly but might not be at a closer look. In Nana, he wrote about the world of the courtesan or high class prostitute operating in the beauty and sex-obscessed French culture of Paris. In "Au Bonheur Des Dames" (The Lady's Paradise) Zola exposes the capitalism and consumer culture of fashion, as expressed in the sales at the department stores.
It was the time of Karl Marx, a time when conservative elements came into conflict with those of individual expression and equal rights. Previously, Emile Zola's novels were bleak, Dickensian and depressing, making a cynical social commentary that progress and idealism is stifled under staunch older generations of Republican power (in this case the French Second Empire under Louis Napoleon III). He conveyed so much pain and suffering in "Germinal" about the coal mine workers in rural France. Like John Steinbeck of the 19th century, Emile Zola immersed himself in what he wrote, treating people as humanly real as possible, touching a chord to so many for his unabashed truths.
In The Ladies Paradise (the title refers to the name of the high class department store in downtown Paris), Zola portrays the fetish and profitable business of women's fashion. Octave Mouret, who at fist comes off as a money-loving, greedy, corporate seducer learns the value of progress and the rights of the individual. Where as he had always dominated women, manipulating them to buy his endless carrousel of hats, silks, gowns and shoes, he cannot win the affections of the newcomer sales girls Denise.
Denis eyes become our eyes as we see into the sexist world of consumer capitalism. Even today, this holds true. Women are encouraged, enforced and expected to be beautiful and attractive, with 0 size dresses, with fashionable tastes and so forth. Those who cannot meet society's self-imposed ideals of beauty crack under the pressure, becoming anorexic, anxious and sick. Super models, department stores, fashion magazines and the latest trends to look like Britney Spears (and behave just as shallow and air-headed) is the way to happiness they say. Emile Zola completely transports you to Paris of the 1870's and 1880's a time when the world seemed to be losing its better values. Is it still losing its values ? Only through advocating women's rights, individual expression, equality, and less stifling elements in society are we truly to be happy.

Are you becoming your mother? Do you dream about storage space? Do you like to stir things up? Learn a thing or two about domestic bliss from the women in Anne Taintor's saucy, sassy artwork.
Customer Reviews:
Something for everyone.......2007-05-22
These cards are hilarious. There are a lot I've seen before, such as the Domestically Disabled picture. But there were so many I hadn't seen yet as well! All of them really funny. I really was tempted to keep them for myself and get more for my friends and family.
Bitingly, wonderfully clever.......2006-11-29
Ah, another day in the domestic paradise of the mid twentieth century woman. Cleaning, laundry and shopping to do, dinner to make - it's a good thing Anne Taintor is here to tell us what's really going on in those (now) unfathomably cheesy adverts from the 1940s-60s. The photos are artful and quaint, but it is the captions that are the showcase of this set. The captions are cleverly turned with a healthy dose of mild, PG13 sarcasm and poke fun at society's portrayals of the female domestic role without sounding bitter. Highly recommended for that witty, sarcastic and only slightly jaded special someone you may know.

Book Description
Introduction by Jonathan Montaldo Foreword by Brother Patrick Hart, OCSO
For twenty-seven years, renowned and beloved monk Thomas Merton (1915-1968) belonged to Our Lady of Gethsemani, a Trappist monastery established in 1848 amid the hills and valleys near Bardstown, Kentucky. In Thomas Merton's Gethsemani , dramatic black-and-white photographs by Harry L. Hinkle and artful text by Merton scholar Monica Weis converge in a unique experience for lovers of Merton.
Hinkle was allowed unprecedented access to many areas inside the monastery and on its grounds that are generally restricted. His photographs invite the reader to experience the various knobs, lakes, woods, and hermitages Merton sought out for times of solitude and contemplation and for reading and writing. These unique images, each accompanied by a passage from Merton's writings, evoke personal reflection and a deeper understanding of how and why Merton came to recognize himself as a part of his Kentucky landscape.
Woven throughout the book, Weis's text explores Merton's fascination with nature not only at Gethsemani, but during his early childhood, throughout his spiritual conversion to Roman Catholicism, and while a member of the Trappist community. She examines how Merton's lifelong interaction with nature subtly revealed and informed his profound spiritual experiences and his writing about contemplation.
Thomas Merton's Gethsemani replicates Merton's path on his solitary hikes in the woods and conveys the wonder of the landscapes that inspired him.
Customer Reviews:
Thomas Mertson's Gethsemani.......2005-11-23
Thomas Merton's Gethsemani, Landscapes of Paradise by Monica Weis was, for me, a worthwhile read on a number of levels. Her premise was fascinating namely that Merton expanded his soul and grew progressively in his relationship with God by embracing not only the rules and rigors of monasticism but the mini-universe of the physical monastery, the land of Gethsemani itself. Weis details Merton's apprehension of this "paradise" with deceptive simplicity - the hills, rivers, storms, birds, smells and rhythms not only beckon him to deeper solititude but lead him into expanding realization, prayer and praise. And that for me, was the core accomplishment of the book. Weis never goes over the top. Her writing is clear and definite without strain, puffery or poetry. Rather the poetry of the book is her step by step detailing of the changes occuring within Merton himself as he allows Gethsemani - its physicality and metaphor - into his mind and heart. She traces the contours of a dynamic, poetic soul and the book shares the movement. Haley's black and white pictures of Gethsemani are simultaneously homey and mysterious; each invites a second look, a revaluation of your first response. His photography and Weis's premise go hand in hand. I remember one shot of a night sky - a black expanse spangled with hundreds of stars. It is sweeping and dramatic, far more majestic than those of woods, sheds and farm tools. Yet it locked perfectly with Weis's final chapters on Merton's (mystic) experience of a palpable unity; his sense that the world's religions have a common source and his full embrace of the METAPHOR he lived at Gethsemani. The book was my summer's morning read - a chapter a day with a cup of Starbuck's! A good way to start a day.
"thomas merton, the icon".......2005-10-11
Five stars for the stunning photography of Harry L. Hinkle, and the wonderful layout of this volume, with it's telling quotes from Thomas Merton's own nature writings. His nature oeuvre is substantial, and this volume fills a need. Unfortunately, the essay text by Monica Weis is unbalanced. One is left with a very misleading idea of what this man was really about. He was not just a Franciscan icon lost in the rapture of the forests. On one level, we do a disservice to this great man in constantly perpetuating this kind of mythology. Too many reverential, saccharine treatments have been printed already. Merton was so much more; and others, beginning with biographer Michael Mott, have brought real balanced treatment to the life of this extremely complex man.
In the Foreward, Brother Patrick Hart makes mention of pilgrimages to the the places of interest in the physical and spiritual odessey of Thomas Merton. Who are these dear people who feel the need to do precisely what Thomas Merton himself so often railed against? Please desist from attempting to create an Icon of this most complex of human beings.
Thomas Merton--being alive.......2005-10-11
Mr. Hinkles evocative and enduring photographs and Ms. Weis' lyrical
text complement each other in support of Thomas Merton's enormous life. This is a precious text largely because it celebrates the courage to
simply be. One can read about Merton's contemplative life and very nearly be with him--in his light under the trees and sky and birds which
are fundamental and which were so essential to his routine, his daily
habit. Weis' text in particular is a carefully crafted essay--both probing and reverential. The book is an acheivement.
expanding horizons.......2005-09-12
I'll admit. I bought this book because the photographer, Harry Hinkle, is my cousin's husband.BUT.. I found myself drawn past the incredible photography of both Merton Thomas and Harry to the moving and insightful writing. The sheer joy of life reflected in the words AND photographs of this book, make me want to look at everything with new eyes and heart.
