malaza malagasy.......2000-06-01
This book covers a wide range of topics for anyone interested in Madagascar. I've found it especially useful for general information about the island's paleo-history, as well as more specific information in my field of zoology. The editors have done an excellent job of organizing the material into a good flow of reading. Seems to be an easier read than the earlier "Key Environments: Madagascar" (1984). The "gloomy" outlook that may exist for the wildlife of Madagascar is not just presented to depress the reader, instead they present a positive outlook in their last chapter using Ranomafana National Park as an example. A must-have for anyone interested in this unique island (and with its interesting people, history, and animals, that should be everyone!).

Awesome!.......2007-02-21
Awesome, easily legible tome. Good concise notations on major events - including Biblical. Received book promptly and in great condition.
No more revisionist history!.......2006-12-08
James Ussher's classic work is an absolute joy to read. I was up 'til the wee hours reading the night I got it. The writing is truly fresh and exciting, a bit unexpected for a volume first published in the mid 1600's by an Anglican archbishop!
I happen to hold a young-earth creationist's view of origins, and find Bishop Ussher's calculations relating to creation utterly believable, but no matter your worldview you will find the histories complete and engaging, interspersed as they are with first hand accounts of some of civilization's most defining moments.
The bindings of this volume seem sturdy enough at first glance, though time only will tell how it holds up to the study this book will certainly receive! The print is crisp and clear, and the illustrations are very fine as well.
This volume belongs in the library of every serious student of history.
The supplemental CD gives a wealth of solidly scriptural information to complement the biblical timeline charts, and some excellent commentary on the position of God's infallible Word in ancient and contemporary times.
Buy this book! You will not be disappointed!
Excellent but not without issues.......2006-11-07
Usher is a classic and is either respected or mocked by modern historians. The mocking is of course driven by worldview conflicts, but those quick to laud Usher's work as authoritative must be careful to avoid zealotry as well.
I find Usher to be extremely helpful and his postdeluvian history seems to be generally quite well referenced. We have run into some dating conflicts that are understandable, for Usher did not have the benefit of archaeology and recent finds of supporting historical texts (last couple of centuries).
His work is certainly commendable, and as a volume of history it is very useful. However, the dating of events especially concerning ancient Egypt and before can't quite be reconciled with several competing histories.
I suggest it as a supplemental history for classical studies, as a primary source it might leave some questions unanswered.
Terrible.......2006-09-25
I thought this book would give me some new insight into biblical history. Its didn't. It is disjointed and much of it talks about one ruler or king or leader (none biblical) who died on such and such date in history. It gives little is any detailed information about anything pertaining to the bible. I thought that by reading this book I would have some new knowledge about biblical history but I have none. Its just a terrible book.
Outstanding Historical Cross-Reference. .......2006-01-26
"Annals of the World" is a great historical reference for the most discerning of scholars. Covering the time from the beginning of creation to 70AD, James Usshur used over 2500 historical sources to ensure that he compiled a complete collection of historical facts.
Elaborating each of the positive qualities and reasons to purchase and read this book are highlighted in most of the 5 star raters, I would only be seconding what they have already stated.

The last thing she expects to be doing in her time off is an illicit private security gig babysitting a celebrity. It should be the easiest money she ever made, only Lauren is not the spoiled narcissist Pat was expecting.

Moon Series.......2006-07-31
I've been enjoying the Moon Series.
Fulton's novels are refeshing and a new spin on each of them, even though the main characters (Cody and Annabel) remain the same.
A novel to take you mind off your troubles. Take this one to the beach with you.
Splendid Escapism.......2005-11-01
While this is the fourth book in the Moon Island Series, it is the first I have read, but it is definitely not the last. A Guarded Heart by Jennifer Fulton is splendid escapism. It has everything from romance and mystery to buried treasure and erotic love scenes.
Lauren Douglas is a TV soap opera star who is closeted mainly because her father is a Congressman. Lauren's TV contract is up for renewal, but before she can score a new contract, she is outed. The Dr Kate Show uses her "morals'' clause to put her on hiatus with the urging of her father who doesn't want his political future ruined. To make matters worse, a crazy fan that has been stalking Lauren, decides to shoot her, leaving her critically wounded
FBI Special Agent Pat Roussel was burned out with her job. After spending three years searching for a serial killer and getting nowhere, she decides to take a leave-of-absence. However, the idea of staying at home and not working at all loses its appeal after several weeks. Lauren's father offers Pat the job of guarding Lauren, but he wants them out of the country so the two head off to secluded Moon Island. As an FBI agent, Pat takes her responsibility of protecting her charge very seriously, but Lauren has other plans. This conflict leaves the two at odds, leading to much friction. But not all of the tension is unpleasant.
Fulton uses Lauren's and Pat's antagonism for each other skillfully, illustrating through thoughts and actions the different needs and wants of each character. The story builds on this, creating a journey for the two of them. It begins with each having stereotypical views of each other's profession and lifestyle. It progresses to the reluctant acceptance by Lauren of the intrusive nature of being guarded, while Pat is forced to relax her hard-line professionalism and allow her tenderness to surface.
Fulton displays her mastery of sexual tension. Lauren and Pat convince themselves that they are not attracted to each other, but the reader is treated to vivid sexual fantasies that invade their thoughts. It is these revealing thoughts that tell the real story. We, as the reader, are just wondering when the two protagonists will figure out what they want. The reader must wait, and this wait is excruciating. Fulton continually teases us throughout this story, but in the end the author knows what she needs to do and executes it brilliantly.
A Guarded Heart is a journey of growth and self-discovery for Pat and Lauren. One cannot help but root for them, and in so doing, we are totally absorbed in this delightful story.
Doesn't get any better.......2005-10-12
So far this is my favorite book in the incredible Moon Island series. I loved these two women, especially Pat, the FBI agent who's torn between her strong sense of duty and her equally strong passion for Lauren. I can see that this author also writes mystery novels because the mystery part of the story was extremely well done even though it was not the main plot of the book.
This author packs a lot of story into her pages and expertly sweeps the reader along without missing anything important. Her writing is stylish and humorous, and also packed with wonderful descriptions and observations. I couldn't put this book down. It's one of my best buys this year.
A stand out lesbian romance.......2005-10-01
I just discovered lesbian romances and I've been reading too many of them! However this one really stands out. A soap star gets outed and is being stalked by a nutty fan. Her dad hires a gorgeous butch bodyguard for her. Neither of them want to be stuck with the other, but at the same time they are hot for eachother. Lauren the star and Pat the FBI agent are very human characters who make some serious mistakes and almost have to pay for them by losing eachother. Their story is much more than just a romance. There's a gripping plot full of unexpected turns, the setting is very sensual and so is the erotic connection between the characters.
A Guarded Heart is witty and fast-paced, and also genuinely touching and satisfying. I recommend this book to anyone who wants all the enjoyment of a romance, but with wonderful writing and more emotional power than you find in most.
I Can't Believe Fulton Can Keep This Up!.......2005-07-25
Jennifer Fulton has very quickly risen near the top of my list of favorite Lesbian authors. She can easily compete with the likes of L.J. Mass, Radclyffe, and Blayne Cooper. I am amazed with each new book she publishes. The Moon Island series is one of the best I've ever read. Each book is full of fresh material and storylines, and the series refuses to get dull. Three cheers for this wonderful writter!
As usual, the setting is Moon Island -- owned by Annabel, Cody, and their daughter Briar. No men are allowed on the island due to an ancient curse, the island's most advanced technology is a short wave radio, and the only way to get there is by plane or boat. Fulton also brings back Chris, a character from Book 3, and introduces a new love interest for this lonely woman.
In Book 4, Lauren Douglas, a famous soap star and daughter of a Senator, is outed by her former girlfriend. Their breakup was immediate after Lauren found her in their shower with a man. Lauren's father hires Pat Roussel to be her bodyguard. Pat has recently had her own share of problems with a seemingly unsolvable case and is on long-term leave from the FBI. Pat's goal is to remain professional and keep Lauren safe, but their hearts get in the way.
On top of it all, there is a boat full of men looking for a lost treasure just off the coast of the island. If you read Book 3, you know why this is a problem (If you haven't, you should!).
Do youself a favor -- go grab a Mai Tai, a plate of fresh pineapple, and some shade then sit down and read this book. It's one you won't soon forget and you'll be craving the next in the series.
Customer Reviews:
Very sweet, gentle read.......2007-05-08
Nice clean read from one of my favorite authors. A great story about how love grows when two people understand the story of each other's soul. Fielding made her characters believable and real; Han is not arrogant or overly "foreign" as many of the heroes in these sheikh stories are; he's just a man with real feelings. Lucy appears to be the "damsel in distress" at first, but redeems herself by being...herself. Not excessively needy or overly independent. Their initial compassion for each other helps in the heart-healing process, then blossoms into love. I would have liked to have had a bit more to the story; I was sorry to see it end.
Gentle Healing .......2007-02-28
From the back of the Book:
Rescued by her prince of the desert.....
Saved from certain death in the unforgiving desert of Ramal Hamrah, Lucy Forrester is transported to a world of luxury by her rescuer, Sheikh Hanif. The tender care he offers her is more than Lucy has ever experienced in her loveless life, and she finds herself drawn to the proud Arabian prince, despite his tortured soul.
As Sheikh Hanif helps Lucy recover from her injuries, Lucy wonders if she can heal Hanif's own wounds, and capture this sheikh's heart....
This book will grab you from the begining. It is so wonderful to read a story that both the man and the women
learn and grow together without the meanness that is so common in Romance Book. Lucy is sweet and strong and Hanif allows her time to see her own self worth and Lucy allow Hanif the time to move throught the greifing process and to reclaim the love of his child. Great book.
A Great Read.......2006-10-04
I must say that I really enjoyed this book! The plotline was really easy to follow along with, and there really wasn't any real misunderstandings between the main characters; nor were there any subplots or secondary characters to detract from the plot. I liked the fact that although the hero was a prince, he wasn't arrogant in any way and I liked the fact that the h/h didn't spend two-thirds of the book at each other's throats insulting each other.
It was an easy read with a plotline that really appealed to me. It was nice to read something that didn't have page after page of love scenes. I recommend this book and I defientely plan to keep this one. This is an author I would most likely read a book from again.

The guarded heart is one of my all time favorite... .......2005-01-12
I totally Love this book. It was very well written, The characters were intriguing. I Love both the Heroine(Erica stone) and the Hero(Owen Kingsley) they had very good chemisrty together. My Favorite book Ever!
Above average Regency Romance.......2003-02-15
This book tells the story of Erica Stone, who left Regency England to be with a husband she barely knew. She arrives in Vienna to find her husband mysteriously murdered and herself alone. Owen Kingsley, the Duke of Graves promises her protection if she will spy for England during the Congress of Vienna.
I found the setting for the book very interesting, and as a whole I liked the book very much.
I haven't given it a 5 star rating because although Erica's character was very well developed, the Duke's history was only hinted at and never fully developed. I kept having the feeling, that somewhere along the book I missed something. I wish the author had taken a few more pages of the book to tell us in some detail how the Duke came to do the job he was doing. On the whole it is a very good book, quite above the average for a Regency Romance.

A little gem!.......2002-05-12
I do love haunting the secondhand bookstores for they often yield up some real treats. I found this one recently and just finished reading it. This was a very satisfying pleasure to read.
It is the story of Owen Kingsley, the Duke of Graves, ineligible to serve in the army because of a crippling birth defect, who chooses espionage as his method of serving his country at the Congress of Vienna in 1814/15. A somewhat dark character, he is committed to his cause and disciplined in his approach. He is, of course since this is a romantic novel, a man of many layers who needs a loving and sympathetic woman to bring him out of himself. Although the vehicle of the disabled man believing himself to be of no merit and unworthy of love is often used, it is very well done here.
Erica Stone, newly widowed and stranded in Vienna, is taken under Graves's wing and agrees to spy for him. The story that unfolds is set against the political machinations of the Congress which attempted to restore equilibrium in Europe following Napoleon's abdication and exile to Elba.
The Congress of Vienna is an interesting backdrop to the story and the author brings in many characters from real life such as Lord Castlereagh, Tallyrand, Wellington and various other luminaries of the times. The research is evident in the author's handling of this often overlooked interlude between Napoleon's exile to Elba and his return to France in the months leading up to Waterloo. So, for those of you who are interested in the military, political and social history of this fascinating time, here is a wonderful read.
The way the relationship between Erica and Graves develops is beautifully developed. Two people, so obviously made for each other, have many obtacles to overcome before they can reach happiness and contentment in a happy and loving relationship.
I enjoyed the secondary characters in this story and the strong yet loving, loyal and sympathtic Erica. Owen Kinglsey is a wonderful hero and eventually finds, in his mid 30s, the sweet happiness he thought he would always be denied him but which he richly deserves.
Well worth seeking out a copy of this; an excellent read and highly recommended.

Do you think hitting a pregnant 18 year old is romantic?.......2004-03-18
Neither do I. The guy is upset because the girl was responsible for an accident that took the life of his wife and unborn child. She was 16 at the time and it was simply an unfortunate accident. The guy basically has her stalked till she turns 18 and forces her to marry him by blackmailing her. He threatened to ruin her widowed mother and her sister. He is a lot older and makes her sleep with him until she is pregnant. Once she is pregnant she informs him and he hits her, hard enough to leave a mark. Nice huh? Since this is a Harlequin you know she stays but would you have stayed with a monster like him? No amount of love can explain emotional and physical abuse.

Secrets,Betrayal, and Dogs!.......2006-10-26
I enjoyed Guarded Hearts. It was an easy read for being Rickard's first book. The characters were believable and real. The story was also one that in today's world, I am sure is possible and does happen somewhere. The author does a good job of drawing you into Alyssa's secret and you find yourself wanting to protect this character and make it all right again. Sue, well I liked her from the begining, but you wonder who she really is and is she there to help Alyssa or hurt her. The supporting characters are also well put together. The good guys are good and the bad guys, well you will hate them! But the question is who is good and who is bad? All in all, this book has a good plot and good characters. I would read more from this author.
I Love Dogs..........2005-09-06
Alyssa Norland has tried to run away from her past -- a time when she betrayed her then boss, a man with strong mafia ties. Currently employed as a dog trainer (obedience and protection) and surrounded by new friends, Alyssa appears happy in her new life. However, after meeting beautiful ex-cop Sue Hunter, her world is forever changed. Under her confident exterior, Alyssa is paranoid about every new face she meets. This is especially true after she starts receiving unnerving threats and is framed for committing several almost-deadly crimes against her friends. However, she's nolonger sure who her real friends are.
Rickard does a wonderful job with this, her first novel. The characters have depth, the story is well-told. This reader "screamed" at the page (not like a lunatic, but like the guy in the back of the movie theater during a scary scene) during some scenes. The characters are so real, one could expect them to show up at the next neighborhood barbeque.
I'm certainly looking forward to more from this author. I expect this book to be well read by my friends, but it will stay on my bookshelf for years to come.
