Book Description
Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) is a modern, reliable tool that complements other chromatographic techniques. This book provides a practical guide to the basic principles, procedures, and pitfalls on the practical application of TLC.
Thin Layer Chromatography: A Modern Practical Approach offers a sequence of chapters following the steps of the technique as the chromatographer would follow them. The chapters provide a choice of sorbent best suited to the separation intended, followed by pre-treatment required for the sample, applying the sample to the sorbent layer, development procedure, visualisation and detection, and finally quantification. Imaging and hyphenation techniques are described. The reasons why recommendations are made for specific and more general methods are covered. The book also provides an overview of some recent developments in the field.
This practical guide is an invaluable introduction to Thin-Layer Chromatography, and will be welcomed by undergraduate students and the practising chromatographer in industry and academia.

Book Description
Jane Austen’s first published novel, Sense and Sensibility is a wonderfully entertaining tale of flirtation and folly that revolves around two starkly different sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. While Elinor is thoughtful, considerate, and calm, her younger sister is emotional and wildly romantic. Both are looking for a husband, but neither Elinor’s reason nor Marianne’s passion can lead them to perfect happiness—as Marianne falls for an unscrupulous rascal and Elinor becomes attached to a man who’s already engaged.
Startling secrets, unexpected twists, and heartless betrayals interrupt the marriage games that follow. Filled with satiric wit and subtle characterizations, Sense and Sensibility teaches that true love requires a balance of reason and emotion.

still relevent for today.......2004-06-01
This is a story of two sisters, marrian and elinor, which, though very similar in some aspects, and share a very similar unfortunate love affair, are total different in their behavior and approach toward matters of the heart. Tough both emotional in both seeking love and addressing it, one lets her emotions take over just about everything else, and the other have better balance between love and logic.
I'm not much of a period novel fan, and didn't like the emma tompson movie so much - so i wasn't too keen on reading this book at first, but as i got into the pace of the story, i enjoyed reading it. what i mostly liked about this book is the fact that though it was written a few centuries ago, the emotions describe in it, and the moral this story tells are still very true till today. the way we all need to balance our inner world with consideration and respect for the outer world.
I've been helping two friends through a pretty messy break up while i was reading this book, and i kept quoting parts of it for them, trying to explain how the choice between "being a marrianne" and "being an elinor" is their's and how dealing with grief and lose might be effected by their own approach to love and life in general.
I recommend this book to anyone who ever suffered from a broken heart and had to deal with a break up. It's inspiring and interesting
Boring...but well written........2004-02-18
Jane Austen delivers an interestingly romantic story of two sisters and their everchanging love lives. Written in a time when a woman's fate was decided by her marriage, the characters in the novel depict the role of women in the nineteenth century. As for exiting and adventurous, Austen's novel doesn't have it. This book was sometimes hard to stay focused on because the story does not relate to modern relationships. Although, the intriguing manner of the Dashwood girls did have me interested at times. I found myself laughing at their wit and quirky dispositions. I would recommend this book to an older audience who can appreciate a more old-fashioned style of romantic novel.

Book Description
In his legal history of the rabbinic profession from biblical to modern times, Jeffrey I. Roth traces the development of principles governing compensation and related benefits for rabbis, scholars, teachers, and judges under Jewish law. Roth focuses on the disconnect that evolved as rabbis wished to serve God and their communities yet needed to provide for the material needs of their families. He charts the shift from the Talmudic ideal of uncompensated service and follows the development of four material advantages sought by the rabbinic professioncompensation, protection against competition, principles of tenure in office, and inheritance rights.
Roth assesses how Jewish legal authorities dealt with seemingly conflicting material and spiritual requirements. Analyzing two millennia of legal and intellectual history, he depicts the struggle of rabbinical authorities and scholars of the Torah to answer questions about their profession in a way that allowed the rabbinate to survive while limiting compromises with received standards. Through vivid historical vignettes, Roth tells a story of legal ingenuity and religious courage, of flexibility in Jewish law, and of a responsiveness to changing circumstances that ultimately, although often hesitantly, laid the foundation for the modern rabbinate.
In one of the few studies of the rabbinate cutting across countries and movements, Roth places rabbis in the social and economic contexts of their times and depicts them not just as religious leaders but as wage earners, providers for their dependents, and competitors in the provision of fee-based services for the more lucrative and prestigious positions. He also draws thoughtful parallels between rabbinic tenure and university academic tenure, noting that both protect the teacher and scholar from ever-changing political winds.
Customer Reviews:
For history buffs, legal scholars, religious leaders, this is a must read.......2006-04-13
Roth's research into the Rabbinic status from 67AD to present is an undertaking that no one had considered, and I was one of the multitude. It's well written, concise, and fascinating.
Fascinating History of the Rabbi's place in Judaism.......2006-03-09
This book tells the story of rabbis and the way their profession developed from ancient to modern times.
Well written, very clear and easy to read, it reflecta contains much interesting and useful information about rabbis, Jewish history and Jewish law.
Few authors take the time to do the quality of research apparent in this wonderful book. I highly recommend it.

Better than I thought...........2007-02-10
I ordered this version of P & P as I wanted a hard back to add to my few other hard back Jane A.'s novels. It arrived in a timely manner as well. In great condition. i was expecting the small print version like the others I had been given from Barnes and Noble and was so pleased to recieve a book of full size, hard back, quality paper and a decent size print. No need for glasses or squinting ---- just yet. A lovely addition. I'm not so thrilled about the art work, but then again I don't like any of the art work in the stories I have. It always ruins my character in my imagination. Happy Reading!!

Book Description
Love and loyalty, hatred and revenge, fear, deprivation, and political ambition: these are the motives which thrust the characters portrayed in these three Sophoclean masterpieces on to their collision course with catastrophe. Recognized in his own day as perhaps the greatest of the Greek tragedians, Sophocles' reputation has remained undimmed for two and a half thousand years. His greatest innovation in the tragic medium was his development of a central tragic figure, faced with a test of will and character, risking obloquy and death rather than compromise his or her principles: it is striking that Antigone and Electra both have a woman as their intransigent 'hero'. Antigone dies rather neglect her duty to her family, Oedipus' determination to save his city results in the horrific discovery that he has committed both incest and parricide, and Electra's unremitting anger at her mother and her lover keeps her in servitude and despair. These vivid translations combine elegance and modernity, and are remarkable for their lucidity and accuracy. Their sonorous diction, economy, and sensitivity to the varied metres and modes of the original musical delivery make them equally suitable for reading or theatrical peformance.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book, for school and stuff.......2006-11-05
Basically i bought this book for my english class, and comparing this book to other books the school uses it is much better, might as well buy something worth more of an educational value, than use the books text book. My friends have another class and got the same book(But i mean title wise) and because it is greek translated, theirs was more simple. So if you want a book that explains more of what is going on in the story, rather than something very simple and explains everything for you already. I recommend this book because it makes you think( since it is more complex ) which is helps you learn.
Translations.......2006-03-20
Researching translations is never an easy task, and in this case, where you'll have to search on Amazon for the title and the translator to find what you want, it's particularly difficult.
Here's what I've found by comparing several editions:
1. David Grene translation: Seems to be accurate, yet not unwieldy as such. My pick. Language is used precisely, but not to the point where it's barely in English.
2. Fitts/Fitzgerald translation: Excellent as well, though a little less smooth than the Grene one. Certainly not a bad pick.
3. Fagles translation: Beautiful. Not accurate. If you are looking for the smoothest English version, there's no doubt that this is it. That said, because he is looser with the translation, some ideas might be lost. For instance, in Antigone, in the beginning, Antigone discusses how law compels her to bury her brother despite Creon's edict. In Fagles, the "law" concept is lost in "military honors" when discussing the burial of Eteocles. This whole notion of obeying positive law or natural law is very important, but you wouldn't know it from Fagles. In Grene, for example, it is translated to "lawful rites."
4. Gibbons and Segal: Looks great, but right now the book has only Antigone (and not the rest of the trilogy) and costs almost 3x as much. I'll pass. But, from a cursory review, I'm impressed with their work.
5. MacDonald: This edition received some good write-ups, but I wasn't able to do a direct passage-to-passage comparison.
6. Woodruff: NO, NO, NO. Just NO. It's so colloquial it makes me gag. Very accessible, but the modernization of the language is just so extreme as to make it almost laughable. You don't get any sense of the power of language in the play. You just get the story. If you want this to be an easy read, then get Fagles, not this.
7. Kitto: Looks good, though not particularly compelling over either Grene or Fitzgerald (or Gibbons if I wanted to pay so much more).
8. Roche: Practically unreadable the English is so convoluted. Might be the most literal translation, but what's the point unless you are learning Greek and want such a direct translation.
9. Taylor: Way too wordy. Might be more literal, but again, why?
Hope this all helps. Translations can make or break the accessibility of literature. Pick wisely.
great translation.......2004-04-07
As a Classics major, I've had to read these plays countless times. Last semester, I picked up this book while writing a paper on Electra, and I fell in love with it. The text that I had previously admired for its ideas I now respected as a work of art. Kitto's words bring a life and humanity to the text that other translations lack. It was like reading the plays again for the first time.
Strong Translation.......2003-11-10
H.D.F. Kitto was a distinguished interpreter of Greek tragedy. These translations, which were written for performance, are at once accurate, clear, and very elegant. Hall provides precisely as much information in the notes as the typical intelligent undergraduate requires. She also points out the few places in which Kitto has made minor departures from the Greek. I have found that undergraduates respond better to these translations than to those available in the Greene and Lattimore series published by the University of Chicago Press--though they too are good.
Boring.......2003-02-03
This book is very boring. I was very sorry that I had to read it.

Book Description
Faithful as translations and vigorous and straightforward both to read and to act, these versions were written, like their originals, for immediate staage-production. Kitto has deliberately used a fairly strict meter, allowing himself no greater number of verses than Sophocles used, and where the original is formal--as in the line-by-line dialogue--the translations too are formal. The original rhythmic structure of the lyrics has been approximately represented; in the Antigone the lyric passages have been followed as closely as the English language permits. Quasi-musical indications of tempo or mood have been added to the lyrical portions as a reminder that they were not recited but were a fusion of poetry, music, and dancing. There are brief notes on the dance-rhythms, on the pronunciation of Greek names, and on the mythological allusions in the three plays.

A Guide to Understanding the World's Great Writing
Book Description
An international literary sensation. First published in Australia, FRANGIPANI has already been licensed in Canada, Holland, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the US. The debut of an entrancing new storyteller, Vaite seasons her tale with charming bits of Tahitian tradition and folk wisdom. A heroine you'll wish was your best friend. Her name is Materena Mahi, and she's the best listener in Tahiti. In Tahiti it's a well-known fact that women are wisest and mothers know best. But it's Materena Mahi who really knows best of all. Everyone--everyone except Materena's daughter, that is--seems to think so. Materena starts her new job as a professional cleaner at the same time she becomes the mother of her beautiful baby girl. Leilani is a challenge almost from the start, posing questions ("Why doesn't it snow in Tahiti?") that seem to Materena not worth wondering about. Soon enough, mother and daughter are engaged in a tug-of-war that tests the bonds of their mutual love. Materena is determined her girl will grow to be a smart, considerate, take-no-nonsense young woman. But when Leilani meets Hotu, a handsome boy and a heartbreaker for sure, Materena must figure out what's best for her daughter--and for herself.
Customer Reviews:
Charming Tale of a Mother's Wisdom.......2007-08-25
Frangipani centers around the character of Materena and her daughter Leilani. Around them circles an array of eccentric extended family members. The novel is filled with an exotic locale, exotic customs and eccentric and lovable characters but at its heart it is about a mother-daughter relationship and the pain and joy it engenders. Materena a 'professional' cleaner and her strong willed and brilliant daughter may be poor Tahitians struggling to get along, but they are universal. You will laugh, you will cry as Matererna dispenses her woman's wisdom to all.
Light and enjoyable but intelligent and worthwhile.......2007-06-05
Frangipani tells the story of Materena, a strong and likeable Tahitian woman. The book tracks Materena's life over the course of about twenty years as she negotiates her sometimes tumultuous relationship with her husband Pito, raises three children, works as a professional cleaner, and cares for her family (both immediate and extended). Vaite skillfully portrays life in rural Tahiti through her depiction of Materena's day to day activities. The book is written in a `slice of life' form which is very effective in creating a picture of what it's like to be a woman in Tahiti. The long time span of the book imparts some understanding of what the entirity of Materena's life is like, as well as allowing us to see how the characters and their relationships with each other grow and change over time.
Although other themes are explored via their inclusion in Materena's everyday life, the primary focus of the book is the relationship between Materena and her daughter Leilani. In her depiction of their relationship, Vaite focuses on the universal aspects of mother-daughter relationships. Some of the most notable scenes are Materena's being told while in labor that girls hurt their mothers more from the beginning, Leilani's never endingly asking questions Materena can't answer, Leilani and Materena's disagreements over Leilani's clothing, Materena's crying in a church because she loves Leilani but almost can't bear to live with her...What mother or daughter can't relate? Things begin to improve when Materena begins to come to terms with the fact that Leilani is her own person, and Vaite brings the book to a gratifying end.
Vaite's juxtaposition of the universality of Materena's and Leilani's experiences with a culture so different from our own makes this book really stand out.
Held My Interest From Start To Finish.......2007-04-19
Vaite is a wonderful writer and she has a way with words. I enjoy fictional stories that use vivid descriptions to help the reader feel as if they are really there. The scene where Vaite describes Matt looking for his baby was so detailed and engrossing that I almost forgot I was reading about it and not watching it on a TV screen. There are several other scenes in the books that are very detailed, without using excess words, and I just have to say I enjoyed this aspect of Vaite's writing.
This book is very inspirational because it is about the power of women. Yes, I learned many new things about Tahiti, but this story could be applied to the lives of women anywhere. I enjoyed this book also because it was another good mother/daughter story. I recommend that all mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, and girlfriends read this book.
The Pacific as it is.......2007-02-11
Materena Mahi is a professional "house cleaner" struggling with mother-daughter conflict. Materena has always forged the middle path between Tahitian custom and modern pragmatism but struggles when her daughter appears to want to leave the Tahitian part of herself behind. Materena is a matriarch of sorts- friends and relatives avidly seek her opinions because of her commonsense wisdom. But when Leilani takes up with the motorcycle-riding Hotu, gets a job, and applies to University, it is Materena who needs emotional support.
Some reviewers have panned this novel as slow and reinforcing of trite island sterotypes we've seen in Gaughin's Tahiti. In fact, this book is slow because Tahiti is slow-or at least slower than a lot of places. You'll have to adjust to island time to enjoy this book. If you want a fast paced Grisham novel, this isn't for you. If you want to slow down, authentically experience another culture, and imagine you can feel the South Pacific on your toes, this is a good book. The islands are a simpler place. It's inhabitants struggle and many of them really do live in fibro board homes and eat the bananas that grow in their yards. I found this book delightful because it stuck to that wonderful reality rather than alluding to a Tahiti that exists on the cover of travel brochures for Americans. A good read.
Life in the South Pacific.......2006-05-13
Celestine captures the essence of living life in the old South Pacific. A time when life moved more slowly and values were set according to the matriarcal way of life. Her portrayal of mother and daughter is timeless, but the humor that she injects is more than the words that are printed, they are the life. To truly enjoy this book, you must have grown up somewhere in the South Pacific. For me I still smell the plumeria(frangipani).
