    Book Description

Radicals play a major role as intermediates in many chemical reactions. They contribute to transformations in the atmosphere, living organisms, chemical synthesis, combustion and detonation amongst others. This comprehensive and conclusive book discusses all these aspects. N-centered Radicals deals with NO x and NCO, relatively stable radicals whose presence in the atmosphere influences the metabolism of living organisms. Also included are NH x, NCH and N 3, important in radical studies, chemical synthesis, detonation and metabolism. Until now there has been no single volume bringing together all aspects of N-centered radical chemistry, from formation, to their chemistry in aqueous environments, biological systems and the atmosphere. N-centered Radicals is essential reading for researchers in organic, physical and environmental chemistry, biology and all others examining the effects of N-centered radicals.

      Book Description

Darwin in his Introduction states the following:"The share which worms have taken in the formation of the layer of vegetable mould, which covers the whole surface of the land in every moderately humid country, is the subject of the present volume... I was led to keep in my study during many months worms in pots filled with earth, I became interested in them, and wished to learn how far they acted consciously, and how much mental power they displayed. I was the more desirous to learn something on this head, as few observations of this kind have been made, as far as I know, on animals so low in the scale of organization and so poorly provided with sense-organs, as are earth-worms.

Charles Darwin, born on February 12, 1809, was a famous English biologist and the father of evolution, grew up in England and as a young man he earned a reputation among scientists as an amateur naturalist, particularly in the identification of beetles. He started to study medicine but changed his career to study theology at Cambridge. In 1831, at age 22, Darwin was invited to travel as an unpaid naturalist on the voyage of the Beagle, an expedition that lasted for years. Darwin was observant, well read and prepared for such an opportunity. During these five years, he studied the animals, plants, land formations and fossils of many countries and islands, and kept a journal and specimens for future studies. One of the places that Darwin visited during his trip was the Galapagos archipelago. He stayed there for five weeks and studied the flora and fauna of the islands. His first task upon return was to review his journal and organize his collections. By the time he had finis! hed, at the age of 29, he had developed much of his theory on the evolution of species. But Darwin was not ready to publish his theory until he had gathered enough supporting evidence. He spent 20 years on this task, and in 1859 he finally published On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection. When this work was first published, the edition sold out immediately, but the newspapers and scientific journals attacked Darwin's theory.

This is a really cool bit by Darwin, who spent some serious time observing earthworms. He made his friends help him sometimes too, it seems. Ninety-five bucks is a lot of money though. Check a univerity library or something and Xerox it.

This last book of his is so awesome, shows the scientific method in action, with simple, understandable words. And, it covers more than "worms" but the worm parts are fascinating--did you know they can "think" and make decisions? Do you know why ancient monuments are buried? ETC. It is short, highly readable and I've purchased tons of this book over the year for friends interested in nature, curious about the world, of which you have an amazing creature nearby right by your back yard.

                    Book Description

Widely regarded as one of Trollope's most successful later novels, He Knew He Was Right is a study of marriage and of sexual relationships cast against a background of agitation for women's rights.

                    5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally contemporary.......2007-07-03

A fan once wrote that this was one of her favorite novels and said "There is nothing wrong with this book," which I thought a backhanded compliment. After several months, I ordered the book anyway.

I enjoyed it immensely. It is a classic of the first degree. Who would have thought Trollope was 'laugh-out-loud' like this? Trollope and George Eliot are to Jane Austen as Dos Passos is to Doctorow: they tells similar stories with much greater texture and commentary - and at greater length. Neither is necessarily better: my wife greatly prefers the rich interior point of view of Austen, while I prefer Trollope and Eliot and Dos Passos. But life is richer for having read them all.

5 out of 5 stars The beauties of conventional decency, and what lurks beneath.......2007-06-04

Trollope is the ideal Victorian, celebrating the conventional, but with a thoroughly worldly appreciation of the darker side of human psychology that's best kept bottled up. In this novel, he promotes over and over -- with not just one but three admirable ingenues who live happily ever after -- the virtues of romantic marriage, while putting his fourth heroine in a catastrophic union where stubborn self-assertion leads to separation, irrational jealousy, parental kidnaping and tragic dissolution. All unfolds with Trollope's characteristic insightful, gentle and funny writing style. The novel's 822 pages turn as easily as an entertainment, but with enough moral gravitas and incisive description of the world of the 1860's to keep the reader thinking and pondering amidst the pleasure of reading this wonderful novel.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......2006-10-01

Admittedly, I've only read THE WAY WE LIVE NOW and HE KNEW HE WAS RIGHT. And although THE WAY WE LIVE NOW might academically speaking, be a tighter, better constructed novel, HE KNEW HE WAS RIGHT is a lot more fun. The beginning (first 100, 200(?) pages) is slow. The whole book hinges on Louis's unfounded jealousy and Emily's unfounded obstinacy. But, once past that, the novel is wonderful. I wanted every character, save Louis, to come to good fortune.

In THE WAY WE LIVE NOW most of the characters are pretty despicable -- and intentionally so.

Of course in HE KNEW HE WAS RIGHT, you have to be willing to submit to the Victorian novel conceit. But if you enjoy Victorian novels as I do, this is a good one.

Again, I have to stress that it's not MIDDLEMARCH, say. But if you're not a critic, but enjoy reading, then get it immediately.

                    4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly complex.......2006-07-10

I was happily surprised by this book. Given the snyopses, I expected the usual woman-as-victim-of-cruel-husband trope. Instead, the book presented a complex marriage, with both parties at fault; in fact, to me, the wife was in the wrong and was abusing her privileges for at least three quarters of the novel.

The secondary and tertiary characters were well drawn, entertaining, and captivating. Trollope managed to convey myriad nuances of the male-female dynamic, avoiding stereotypes and common topicalities of many Victorian novels.

                    Enjoyed this one a lot.

                        Book Description

Trollope’s mother, wife, and a friend he loved platonically most of his life provided him three very different views of the Victorian woman. And, according to Jane Nardin, they were responsible for the dramatic shift in his treatment of women in his novels.

This is the first book in Sandra Gilbert’s Ad Feminam series to examine a male author. Nardin initially analyzes the novels Trollope wrote from 1855 to 1861, in which male concerns are central to the plot and women are angelic heroines, submissive and self-sacrificing. Even the titles of his novels written during this period are totally male oriented. The Three Clerks, Doctor Thorne, and The Bertrams all refer to men. Shortly after meeting Kate Field, Trollope wrote Orley Farm, which refers to the estate an angry woman steals from her husband and which marks a change in the attitudes toward women evident in his novels.

His next four books, The Small House at Allington, Rachel Ray, Can You Forgive Her?, and Miss Mackenzie, prove that women’s concerns had become central in his writing. Nardin examines specific novels written from 1861 to 1865 in which Trollope, with increasing vigor, subverts the conventional notions of gender that his earlier novels had endorsed.

Nardin argues that his novels written after 1865 and often recognized as feminist are not really departures but merely refinements of attitudes Trollope exhibited in earlier works.

                                        Book Description

The European Community relies on the Member States both to implement and enforce its laws, even in the face of conflict with existing national legislation. This important book examines how EC law is grafted onto the UK national legal system by a process of adjustment and co-operation. It focuses on the practical problems of implementation for those who are the object of Community regulation and those who are now required to administer it, with its increasingly prominent role in the control of government action and impact on the judiciary. The book is divided into three sections: Implementing EC Law in the United Kingdom is an essential resource for practitioners of European law and government, constitutional lawyers, and European businesses and trade associations.
