Book Description
Regional intercomparisons between ecosystems on different continents can be a powerful tool to better understand the ways in which ecosystems respond to global change. Large areas are often needed to characterize the causal mechanisms governing interactions between ecozones and their environments. Factors such as weather and climate patterns, land-ocean and land-atmosphere interactions all play important roles. As a result of the strong physical north-south symmetry between the western coasts of North and South America, the similarities in climate, coastal oceanography and physiography between these two regions have been extensively documented.
High Latitude Rain
Forests and
Associated Ecosystems of the West Coast of the Americas presents current research on West Coast forest and river ecology, and compares ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest with those of South America.

The Thread That Runs So True: A Mountain School Teacher Tells His Story
ASIN: 0826328091 |
Book Description
The Education of Little Tree tells of a boy orphaned very young, who is adopted by his Cherokee grandmother and half-Cherokee grandfather in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee during the Great Depression.
Little Tree as his grandparents call him is shown how to hunt and survive in the mountains, to respect nature in the Cherokee Way, taking only what is needed, leaving the rest for nature to run its course.
Little Tree also learns the often callous ways of white businessmen and tax collectors, and how Granpa, in hilarious vignettes, scares them away from his illegal attempts to enter the cash economy. Granma teaches Little Tree the joys of reading and education. But when Little Tree is taken away by whites for schooling, we learn of the cruelty meted out to Indian children in an attempt to assimilate them and of Little Tree's perception of the Anglo world and how it differs from the Cherokee Way.
A classic of its era, and an enduring book for all ages, The Education of Little Tree has now been redesigned for this twenty-fifth anniversary edition.
The Education of Little Tree tells of a boy orphaned very young, who is adopted by his Cherokee grandmother and half-Cherokee grandfather in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee during the Great Depression.

A real find........2007-07-21
This book was loaned to me by a wonderful lady that I was doing some work for, because she loved it and wanted to share. I am still buying it as gifts.
I have been an avid reader for 67 years. This is certainly in the top ten books that I have read. It's Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Angela's ashes etc. all with a flair that they didn't reach. The language, phrasing is unique. I almost never read a book twice or more. This is the exception.
One of the best.......2007-05-12
I read this wonderful book to my children when they were younger. They loved it as much as I. We laughed and cried together. Now, I have given a copy to my oldest son to read to his son who will be born this month. It is a book to be shared and cherished. What a lovely gift Forrest Carter has given to the world.

Greetings,
This book took my soul on a journey. The content of this book will confirm that all White Americans motives are not pure. My heart aches because I know that Little Tree's story is the same story of so many other ethnic groups. People have been conquered, destroyed and forced to accept ways and beliefs that were not their own.
The book is about a little boy whose parents die so he has to go live with his grandparents who are Indians. While living with his grandparents they eventually they teach him their way which includes living off the land, catching wild animals and learning what plants and bushes to avoid.
He is eventually forced to go to school with white children because it is the law that all children must go to school and there he quickly discovers how much Indians are hated. He is physically abused, teased, forced to cut his hair and forbiddened to acknowledge or pratice his ways.
In the end, he returns home to the arms of the people that love him and the mountains that he knows so well.
I see you Little Tree!
Enjoy!
My all-time favorite.......2007-02-02
Like another reviewer suggested, this book should be required reading. I had to read it for a class in college and put off starting it because it didn't seem that interesting. When I finally got around to it, I read the whole book in one night, alternately laughing hysterically and crying my eyes out. My roommate must have thought I was insane. Since then I've reread The Education of Little Tree many times and always seem to find something new in it. The story of Little Tree's "education" and the book's narration from a five year-old's perspective is priceless. Even knowing the author wasn't really raised by Cherokee grandparents doesn't detract from the book at all. Buy it now or go to the library or borrow it from a friend, tape up your ribs so you don't bust them from laughing, grab a box of tissues, and find a cozy spot to get to know Little Tree.
A must read book.......2007-01-12
This book can be enjoyed by a young audience, as well as adult. The book takes readers back to a time of hardships during the great depression and the discrimination against American Indians at that time. It also takes a harsh look at the part that religion played in fostering the mistreatment of the Indian youth.

I read this book twice because I related to the poor little boy. It has a happy ending which I am content with. I love the true story and the bits of comic relief inserted through Little Tree's personal experience.

Book Description
When University of Michigan sophomore Celeste Tyree travels to Mississippi to volunteer her efforts in Freedom Summer, she's assigned to help register voters in the small town of Pineyville, a place best known for a notorious lynching that occurred only a few years earlier. As the long, hot summer unfolds, Celeste befriends several members of the community, but there are also those who are threatened by her and the change that her presence in the South represents. Finding inner strength as she helps lift the veil of oppression and learns valuable lessons about race, social change, and violence, Celeste prepares her adult students for their showdown with the county registrar. All the while, she struggles with loneliness, a worried father in Detroit, and her burgeoning feelings for Ed Jolivette, a young man also in Mississippi for the summer.

Freshwater Road.......2007-09-12
My book club the Reading on Walden Book Club located in Beverly Hills in Chicago found this book to be excellent and awesome.
I am 59 yrs old and was 15 the summer of 1964 and I remember the "Feedom Riders" and the TV coverage. We all found the character development presented by Ms. Nicholas to be superb and so real. I loved Ms Owens and the Reverend . This book reminded me of a screenplay. I sure hope my sister and friend Ms Winfrey has this book on her list and also makes it into a film . Thank you for letting me have my say.

Good topic, poor writing.......2007-05-23
I am amazed at the number of five-star reviews this book has been given, and can only think that it is the power of the subject: a black Ann Arbor student volunteering to go to dangerous Mississippi in the 1964 Freedom Summer trying to register black voters -- or the author's reputation as an actress that is blinding readers to the ineptness of the writing. The book is extremely wordy, extremely repetitious, and lacks humor and subtlety. The author's handling of flashbacks is often very clumsy, as is her amateurish attempt at rendering partial stream of consciousness. The dialogue is often very good as are some of the (usually overdone) images. But this subject matter deserves better writing (and certainly better editing!)
A Masterpiece!.......2006-12-05
It's hard to believe this could be the debut work of writer Denise Nicholas, it is so magnificently written. Emotionally moving, politically charged, socially important...there are many reasons why you should read this book. In fact, I hope it will be required reading in English and Political Science classes...that is how powerful its message is.
A satisfying and engrossing read from start to finish, and a book to share...to discuss, to remember.
Summer 1964: the personal is political.......2006-03-23
Freshwater Road conjures the summer of 1964 in Mississippi, Freedom Summer, a turning point in the history of America. In it, a young black, idealistic coed from Detroit comes to a very small town in Mississippi where she tries to develop a "freedom school" for local black children and to register black voters. The book is both a personal journey for Celeste-and an engaging recreation of an important time in the civil rights movement. Although it was less than 40 years ago, many, if not most, Americans do not know about or remember the time when it was actually life threatening to register to vote and where the simple act of drinking out of a water fountain labeled "for whites only" was a major act of rebellion and a challenge to the establishment. The novel is set in a time of political struggle but it is a deeply personal book that addresses the direct and indirect impact of this struggle on the lives of a fascinating group of characters. Nichols brings both Detroit and Freshwater Road in Pineyville, Mississippi to life with all its smells and sounds and multi-dimensional residents. It is a sign of a good book that, when you close the cover, you want to know more about the characters and wonder what happened next. After I finally lay down this page turner, I wanted to know what happened to Celeste, to her family, to Jolivette and the other movement workers and to the people of Pineyville who were all changed by her visit. Too often we think of the civil rights movement in terms of highly publicized moments such as the deaths of Chaney, Schwerner and Goodman in Philadelphia, Mississippi, the dogs of Birmingham or the March on Washington. Freshwater Road reminds us that there were hundreds of small, forgotten but very important dramas that unrolled across the south during this summer. Nichols portrays the complexities and ambiguities of love, race, courage, and family. This is a book where color and place play an important part but it deals with universal themes that resonate across race and geography. For those old enough to remember that fateful summer, it is a vivid and truthful reminder of that time and its impact on individuals and our nation. For those to whom this era is unknown, it provides a window to a different time in America that we should never forget. And it reminds all of us of the power of love and hope.
A True Five Stars.......2006-03-21
Freshwater Road is warm quicksand you step into on page one that quickly pulls you deeper and deeper into the lives of vibrant people you can't escape. Denise Nicholas' novel transcends time as it sweeps us back into the urgency and immediacy of the civil rights movement. Celest and her other characters are so alive you must remind yourself this is a novel. I'm looking forward to the film.

Description:
Differential road mortality may affect the demography of vertebrate populations when movements associated with foraging, reproduction, or dispersal cause a greater proportion of one sex or stage to frequently contact roads. In the case of turtles, roadsides create artificial disturbed and open habitats that may be attractive to nesting females but may cause significant road mortality. I tested this possibility by comparing the sex ratios of turtle populations in a lake that is bisected by a high-traffic, four-lane highway to those in nearby ponds located away from major roads in northwestern Florida (USA). I evaluated the potential role of road mortality as the cause of skewed sex ratios by determining whether adult female freshwater turtles move overland more frequently than that expected from actual sex ratios and the proportions of turtles of four species that attempt to nest annually along the roadside. Population sex ratios were dramatically biased toward males in the Florida cooter (Pseudemys floridana) (80% males), yellow-bellied slider (Trachemys scripta) (73% males), and common musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus) (65% males) in the lake adjacent to the highway compared to those in ponds not affected by road mortality, where the proportion of males ranged from 39% to 60%. Despite male-biased population sex ratios, under normal (non-drought) conditions a significantly greater proportion of adult females (57-72%) than males were found on land along the highway and, thus, have a greater annual probability of being killed by vehicles. An estimated 6-29% of all adult females in four turtle species nested annually along the highway shoulder. If this phenomenon is general for freshwater turtle populations located near roadways, male-biased sex ratios and low numbers of adult female turtles elsewhere may be the result of cumulative differential mortality of nesting females struck by vehicles as they enter the highway during annual nesting forays.
