Springer Handbook of Condensed Matter and Materials Data provides a concise compilation of data and functional relationships from the fields of solid-state physics and materials in this 1200-page volume. The data, encapsulated in over 750 tables and 1025 illustrations, have been selected and extracted primarily from the extensive high-quality data collection Landolt-Börnstein and also from other systematic data sources and recent publications of physical and technical property data. Many chapters are authored by Landolt-Börnstein editors, including the prominent Springer Handbook editors, W. Martienssen and H. Warlimont themselves.
The Handbook is designed to be useful as a desktop reference for fast and easy retrieval of essential and reliable data in the lab or office. References to more extensive data sources are also provided in the book and by interlinking to the relevant sources on the enclosed CD-ROM.
Physicists, chemists and engineers engaged in fields of solid-state sciences and materials technologies in research, development and application will appreciate the ready access to the key information coherently organized within this wide-ranging Handbook.
From the reviews:
"...this is the most complete compilation I have ever seen... When I received the book, I immediately searched for data I never found elsewhere..., and I found them rapidly... No doubt that this book will soon be in every library and on the desk of most solid state scientists and engineers. It will never be at rest." -Physicalia Magazine

Book Description
The age of nanotechnology is upon us. Engineering at the molecular level is no longer a computer-generated curiosity and is beginning to affect the lives of everyone. Molecules which can respond to their environment and the smart machines we can build with them are and will continue to be a vital part of this 21st-century revolution. Liming Dai presents the latest work on many newly-discovered intelligent macromolecular systems and reviews their uses in nano-devices.
Intelligent Macromolecules for Smart Devices features:
- An accessible assessment of the properties and materials chemistry of all the major classes of intelligent macromolecules from optoelectronic biomacromolecules to dendrimers, artificial opals and carbon nanotubes
- In-depth analysis of various smart devices including a critique of the suitability of different molecules for building each type of device
- A concise compilation of the practical applications of intelligent macromolecules including sensors and actuators, polymer batteries, carbon-nanotube supercapacitors, novel lasing species and photovoltaic cells
As an exposition of cutting-edge research against a backdrop of comprehensive review,
Intelligent Macromolecules for Smart Devices will be an essential addition to the bookshelf of academic and industrial researchers in nanotechnology. Graduate and senior undergraduate students looking to make their mark in this field of the future will also find it most instructive.
Customer Reviews:
`The only book to deal with Molecules and Devices!'.......2005-08-14
According to the author, `Intelligent Macromolecules' are large molecules with capability to change their conformational structures and/or properties in response to an external stimulus. In this book, devices constructed from Intelligent Macromolecules are referred to as `Smart Devices'. Recently, many scientists and engineers investigate these devices, for example, Carbon Nanotube transistors, polymer LEDs, and DNA sensors.
Since the size of devises becomes as small as molecule, fundamentals of material science are required as well as engineering of device constructions. There is a gap between science and engineering to develop these devices. The purpose of `Intelligent Macromolecules for Smart Devices' by Liming Dai is to fill the gap by providing up to date summary of the field.
The text is divided into three major parts. The first part deals with fundamentals of macromolecules. The structures and Syntheses of Conducting Polymers, Stimuli-Responsible Polymers, Dendrimer and Fullerenes, and Carbon Nanotubes are described. The second part, which characterizes this book most, deals with Intelligent Macromolecules to Smart Devices. In this part, Oriented and Patterned Macromolecules and Nanostructure are revealed, which is necessary to construct Devices from Molecules. In the final part, a large number of Smart Devices, such as Electronic and Photonic device, Sensor and Sensor Arrays, Actuators and Nanomechanical devices are described.
I am strongly recommend this book all, in particular scientists and researchers interested in device application of polymers and device engineers interested in molecular structure and synthesis. I also recommend to students that begin to study in this field.

From the author: Two different mixed connectivity composites, consisting of a ferroelectric ceramic powder of calcium modified lead titanate (PTCa) dispersed in a polymer matrix, have been fabricated and their ferroelectric properties have been investigated. Hysteresis measurements have been conducted on composites of PTCa with a polar polymer of polyvinylidene trifluoroethylene (P(VDF-TrFE)) and PTCa with a thermosetting epoxy resin to determine the coercive fields and remanent polarization of the two different composites. The composites show noticeable differences in their behavior during poling along with the values of their piezoelectric coefficients, with the composite of PTCa/P(VDF-TrFE) showing enhanced piezoelectric activity over that of PTCa/epoxy. This paper reports on the polarization properties and the microstructural nature of the composites.

Description:
We developed a novel-structured ferroelectric liquid crystal (LC) device containing two fine polymer structures for a flexible moving-image display incorporating thin plastic film substrates. Aligned polymer fibers of sub-@mm-diameter stabilize the LC alignment and create high-speed grayscale capability, while the polymer walls attach the two flexible plastic substrates and keep the gap between the substrates constant when the structure is bent. The composite film was obtained by photopolymerization-induced phase separation using a solution film of LC and monomer that was coated by a flexographic printing method. The fabricated device has great potential for flexible large-area moving-image displays.

Easy read........2000-07-05
This is an excellent book to get an introduction into the world of evolution. Skelton cites many examples and not an overwhelming amount of statistics. But, this is not the best book to use to get an in-depth understanding into the ever-changing world of evolution. You would need to use other text to get a complete and comprehensive picture.
Book Description
Historical events of the last three centuries come alive through these women’s singular correspondences—often their only form of public expression. In 1775, Rachel Revere tries to send financial aid to her husband, Paul, in a note that is confiscated by the British; First Lady Dolley Madison tells her sister about rescuing George Washington’s portrait during the War of 1812; one week after JFK’s assassination, Jacqueline Kennedy pens a heartfelt letter to Nikita Khrushchev; and on September 12, 2001, a schoolgirl writes a note of thanks to a
New York City firefighter, asking him, “Were you afraid?”
The letters gathered here also offer fresh insight into the personal milestones in women’s lives. Here is a mid-nineteenth-century missionary describing a mastectomy performed without anesthesia; Marilyn Monroe asking her doctor to spare her ovaries in a handwritten note she taped to her stomach before appendix surgery; an eighteen-year-old telling her mother about her decision to have an abortion the year after Roe v. Wade; and a woman writing to her parents and in-laws about adopting a Chinese baby.
With more than 400 letters and over 100 stunning photographs,
Women’s Letters is a work of astonishing breadth and scope, and a remarkable testament to the women who lived–and made–history.

Womens Letters.......2007-09-14
This is a fascinating way to reread the history of Amerca through women's eyes.Though the letters are written by different women from different
classes, one can readily continue the time frame. The story of the young girl who is sent on a mission to George Washington;the story of the treacherous trip via sailing vessel are both compelling. Highly recommended to women to read about the bravery of our foremothers.
A great gift for a woman..........2007-03-02
I bought this book for my mother, who enjoys it very much. Its easy reading, but powerful, insightful, and uplifting. Highly recommended.
Women's Letters: America from the Revolutionary War to the Present.......2007-01-13
I purchased this book for my mother-in-law for Christmas and she has said that it is a wonderful book. I had trouble finding the book until I went on Amazon.com.
gift for mom.......2007-01-11
I bought this book for my mom. She had brain surgery 3 1/2 years ago. Before her accident she was an avid reader, and loved American History. I bought this book for her, per the letters were short enough that she wouldn't forget what was happening in the "story", and I knew if she would be more likey to try reading more. Wow! She loves it, and her friends even read it when they come over. My mom is reading again, it might take her a half hour to read a page, but that does not matter. This book has change my mom, Priceless...
Gift for my mom.......2006-11-06
My mom was very pleased with this gift. Recommend it for any women in your life.

When Brant and Charlene wreck their car in a horrible snowstorm in the middle of nowhere, the only place they can find shelter is a mysterious little inn called World's End. Here they wait out the storm and listen to stories from the many travelers also stuck at this tavern. These tales exemplify Neil Gaiman's gift for storytelling--and his love for the very telling of them. This volume has almost nothing to do with the larger story of the Sandman, except for a brief foreshadowing nod. It's a nice companion to the best Sandman short story collection, Dream Country, (and it's much better than the hodgepodge Fables and Reflections). World's End works best as a collection--it's a story about a story about stories--all wrapped up in a structure that's clever without being cute, and which features an ending nothing short of spectacular. --Jim Pascoe

Customer Reviews:
One of the least successful of the series.......2007-09-17
Rather than a continuous narrative, this volume is a collection of short pieces with distinctly different artistic treatments. The frame story is that there's an inn just outside space and time, where travelers just might find themselves marooned for awhile when a reality story hits. There not being much else to do, they take turns telling stories, Canterbury-style. Some, like "Cluracan's Tale" and "The Golden Boy," are quite good. Others, like "Hob's Leviathan," are just kind of pointless. For me, this is one of the less satisfying entries in an excellent series.
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A reality storm causes a group of travellers, all afflicted by actual storms in their own realities to be transported elsewhere, nearby to the Inn at World's End. They all take shelter there, heal injuries, and pass the time on the piss and doing some telling of stories. One of the travellers is Cluracan of Faery, having been on a diplomatic mission, and two are humans from different time periods.
The story continues..........2007-06-27
The Saga of Morpheus continues in this Graphic Novel. Gaiman is the best. A co-worker's 18 y.o. son is reading the series and he is blown away.
Point of order.... but still a great compilation.......2007-05-24
From a previous review, the following quote exists:
fans of Gaiman will note that "A Tale of Two Cities" borrows heavily from the essay he wrote for the SIMCITY 2000 game
As a point of accuracy, it's the other way around, The Tale of Two Cities came before the SimCity 2000 Game.
This is still my favorite collection of Sandman Stories. The Sea Witch Story is one I occasionally dream about.
...within stories, within stories, within stories..........2006-08-05
Are Sandman fans such because they love the characters (Dream, Delirium, etc.) or because they love the writings of Neil Gaiman?
I'd imagine that there are both types, and that most of us are somewhere on a continuum in-between.
I mention this, because those of you who are closer to the "love Gaiman" pole, like myself, will doubtless love this collection of short stories, set in the Sandman universe. On the otherhand, those who are closer to the characters pole might well be disappointed, as they are almost non-existent, here.
Worlds' End concerns a group of travellers, taking shelter from a very strange storm at a pan-dimensional inn, who while away the hours telling stories, a la The Canterbury Tales, The Decameron, Hyperion, etc. While we *could* say that this is a tired cliche, or device, or any number of things that would be unfairly unflattering of Mr. Gaiman, I think, rather, that he's using this structure to make a point. In fact, *within* one of these stories, there is a character who gets into a group that starts telling stories to pass the time. The tale, itself, is a narration of a story being told. And, lest we forget, the whole comic is a story being told from Gaiman to us. Stories, within stories, within stories, within stories, within stories...
I think that, here, Gaiman wants to reflect in part on the role that stories play in our lives. Sandman, here, isn't Dream, but is the Master of Stories (which is pointed out in this volume).
And so, if you're comfortable with the fact that cutie Death will only put in a cameo or two, the question becomes: are these stories any good?
My answer--yes, they're good.
Another strong book in an amazing series. Five stars.
