A great departure from conventional academic 'black box' thinking that most likely will prove to be correct as more evidence mounts over the years. An invitation to expand thinking about human origins and life on Earth and not be confined by the taboos determined by the self-appointed 'elite' of university parasites that rule scientific establishments. To be read and re-read by anyone interested in alternative explanations to unresolved questions on the dawn of humankind.

Like this book........2007-05-31

I read this book from cover to cover, it is different from other books in the same genre.

Was engrossed in this by about the 3rd page and read the whole thing in one afternoon. This is typical at it's best, an easy-reading, fast-paced, mindless crime thriller, highly enjoyable but shouldn't be taken too seriously. Thouroughly deserving of 5 stars.

Much less moving than 'The descent of woman".......2006-04-24

This book is not bad, but does not really explain (and even less sell) the Aquatic Ape Hypothesis. It just seems to be a defence of it.

When I read the "The descent of woman" I was attired by it, it was nice and simple and even feminist...
When reading Aquatic Ape Hypothesis I have felt nothing. Perhaps this book is more correct technically but it rather seems written by a lawyer trying to avoid saying anything offensive.

My advice: go and read "The descent of woman". It is much nicer.

A great learning tool for the classroom.......2006-01-03

This is a fabulous book, but not for the reasons you might think. I use this book in my comparative vertebrate anatomy class. It is a great example of cherry-picking information from the primary literature. At the time that this book was printed, there were many peer-reviewed articles that refuted much of her arguments for a secondarily aquatic human history but unfortunately you won't find them in her book. Good scientists put the best data forward that runs counter to the hypothesis and see if it holds up. This isn't done here. The aquatic ape "theory" contains much of the pseudo-science trappings of intelligent design-namely selectively pointing out "gaps" in the current theory of human evolution and then proclaiming that the alternative must therefore be true. For those that are aquatic ape enthusiasts, I suggest you read the primary literature for yourself.

Her other book, The Scars of Evolution, suffers from the same problems. Although it is an attempt to address her critics, it still contains much misinformation. For example she discusses fur seals as having primarily eccrine sweat glands on their flippers when the primary literature strongly suggests that such glands are apocrine in origin (and that otarids are really inefficient sweaters).

In summary, the book is a great way to get students interested in comparative anatomy and also shows how comparative anatomy can be applied to a particular question. Her book also provides a great exercise for students to critically evaluate ideas by comparing her statements to the direct primary literature. Unfortunately, as an important contribution to our evolutionary origins, it is best to look elsewhere.

Go Swimming with Elaine Morgan!.......2001-05-19

A thoroughly documented, dispassionate, and compelling argument that the reason we humans are so different from the other apes is because we led a semi-aquatic existence some millions of years ago. From our lack of fur, to our subcutaneous fat, to our descended larynx, there are just too many clues to ignore the Aquatic Ape hypothesis. If you are interested in human origins, or interested in the sea, read this book. Even if you don't agree with everything within, it'll get your neurons whizzing.

Sacred sound in pure, unadulterated form. Sacred, Healing, Divinely Transformational.......2002-01-26

Upon picking up Deborah's book, I could feel the divine energy moving through my hands and my body. The registration of Truth spoke through the innate wisdom of my body. I knew this book was special. As I gently tossed the pages upon my first peek, I was astounded by its beauty and the divine grace pouring off the pages. This is no ordinary book, as a chalice holds the elizer of life, so to does Deborah's book alchemically touch the reader with her artistry, intuition, sound healing expertise and wisdom. I have referred back to this book time and time again for clarity and identification of the essence of sacred sound and the symbology associated with the chants. This book is a gift to the soul for all of humanity to become more clear about the Truth of Being. With respect and the utmost of honor I definitely give this book a five star.

Beauty & Grace.......2001-12-23

An outstanding book which conveys the beauty & grace of sound through its words, quotations, exquisite photography and artistic arrangement of word and image. For this reason, this makes an excellent gift book. This book is experiential and right-brain. It suggests various truths about sound, then asks the reader to go try out exercises for herself. Conversely, the accompanying CD is pretty much filled with dialogue, which may interfere with the experience of listening to the sounds themselves. Although, of course, the voice too is sound and if you like guided musical experience, the CD is excellent.

Molleen Matsumura is someone I met in the mid 1980's in Berkeley at a SHEB meeting and so I am biased in some ways.

Having said that I am also a damn honest person and speak my mind. Voices for Evolution is a great book for those interested in knowing that others besides non-religious folks believe in the theory. And since Kansas (run dog run) has banned the teaching of evolution in their public schools (how many Nobel winners have they turned out in Kansas anyway?) I think this book has even more value.

I would even suggest you buy a copy for your local library and then have a bookplate with your name as the donor put inside the front cover and thus let everyone in your village know at least one THINKER lives there.

Interesting Collection of Pro-Evolution Statements.......2000-05-24

This book is an interesting collection of statements which favor evolution (and oppose so-called 'scientific' creationism) by various scientific, educational, and religious groups. This book contains ammunition that could be useful in debating creationists.

Outstanding resource.......1998-09-14

This is an outstanding collection of statements supporting evoolution education from most of the major American religious denominations (Catholic, Protestant, Jewish) and from scientific and educational organizations. It proves clearly that most religions support evolution education and church/state separation--even some conservative churches which might teach differently in church but don't want to do it in public schools. This is a moajor reference for parents, teachers and students (and ministers) confronting anti-evolutionist pressures on local schools.

Published in 1949, shortly after the author's death, A Sand County Almanac is a classic of nature writing, widely cited as one of the most influential nature books ever published. Writing from the vantage of his summer shack along the banks of the Wisconsin River, Leopold mixes essay, polemic, and memoir in his book's pages. In one famous episode, he writes of killing a female wolf early in his career as a forest ranger, coming upon his victim just as she was dying, "in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes.... I was young then, and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, no wolves would mean hunters' paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view." Leopold's road-to-Damascus change of view would find its fruit some years later in his so-called land ethic, in which he held that nothing that disturbs the balance of nature is right. Much of Almanac elaborates on this basic premise, as well as on Leopold's view that it is something of a human duty to preserve as much wild land as possible, as a kind of bank for the biological future of all species. Well written book. A. Leopold was an early messenger regarding people`s influence on nature and the risk of damage because of short-sighted politics/business. His description of his surroundings is vivid. One wonders how "his" landscape looks today!

The whole process went great. It took a few minutes extra at the beginning as it was my first time. Since then, I have bought another book and some other items. It's truly a great way to get a good deal on thing you would never think were available on line. Have plans for many other items that I have been checking out as my budget allows.

Book worth reading and re-reading for anyone interested in ecology, also professionally, or who has respect for the natural world. In a way it is pity that the book is as vital now as it was. Our undersanding of ecology and needs for looking after our environment increased alongside with the rate of its destruction
