Horrible Lab Book.......2007-09-30
Well, I received the manual and I was expecting that I purchased the 7th edition. Instead, I got the 6th edition. I think they should of specified in the beginning that it was the 6th edition originally so I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. ALSO, a majority of the EXERCISES were MISSING! How can I use a manual that is missing questions! I decided to keep it since it had the same instructions as the 7th, but now I have to always photocopy the exercises from someone else. Basically it was a HORRIBLE experience.
Microbio Lab Manual.......2006-11-10
Medical applications within each lab exercise are pertinent and relevant to my career interests. Great detail and excellent diagrams are helpful, although novice laboratory students should perform experiments under supervision of experienced instructors.
Pricey, but good.......1999-09-02
An excellent introduction into microbiology. It covers agar working techniques beautifully.
Some problems with it though. First, it references a text book for further reading. I don't have the text book.
Second, the expirements call for very specific bacteria/fungi/viral cultures that are difficult to obtain and mix if you are not using the book as part of a university class, in which case you'll likely not have any choice as to which text you use. Specifically a large number of the experiments utilize organisms which are potentially human pathogens, so do not expect to be able to aquire the raw materials for many of these experiments.
And last but not least is the price. However I've not found a better book for self teaching basic agar culture. Emphasis is on test tube culture, making the working materials a bit chearper and more available to most folks.

This current laboratory manual is based on the original manuscript written by the late Dr. Michael S Parker (1961-2003). Dr. Parker worked diligently in designing and coordinating the microbiology laboratories at University of Memphis. Not Quite Camelot.......2007-02-03
It took me longer than I expected to finish reading this book. Its very slow paced in its narration and I went into it know it was some sort of ananlogy for Camelot--so I kept expecting more obvious links to the British legends. But it is not Camelot, though as I read further I did finally see what people were refering to. Danny's house is like a round table that attracts all sorts--deep down they have good hearts (except maybe Big Joe Portagee...) and good deeds are done by them. Though often with much mayhem beforehand.
The set up is very similar to "Cannery Row" in how Steinbeck lets the story unfold. There is one man with the power--in this case Torellei with his gallons of cheap wine that the group of guys is always drinking. There is a house that they share. And the chapters are mostly self contained short stories but also follow a plot arc of the whole book.
As I read further I enjoyed the book more, it took me about half way through to really appreciate what Steinbeck was doing. The entrance of the character, The Pirate, was possibly what really drew me in. He is fantastic! A man who is a bit slow of mind but with a sold gold heart, who also has five very loyal canine friends. I'd reccomend people read this book just for the chance to meet this character.
Pilon is also another brilliant character, he is wiley and smart and often selfish until an opportunity for the greater good comes along.
Not my favorite Steinbeck novel, but certainly was worth reading.
Great read.......2006-12-13
Tortilla Flat is a gripping tale of a group of scoundrels who are only looking out for themselves. They live in the old, rundown part of Monterey which is known as Tortilla Flat. The main character, Danny, inherits two houses which brings his so-called "friends" to his side. They embark on many wild and ever memorable adventures which are driven by greed and the need to take from others to better themselves.
One Great & Overlooked Book.......2006-10-02
This is an example of an overlooked classic and brilliant morality tale. This story is very funny and very perceptive. This is an automatic read. If you see this, just make yourself read it. You will never forget the truths of the human condition in America that Steinbeck relays to us. I'm looking forward to the day that America starts paying attention to the least of us and values diversity. You may say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.
Early California Counter-culture.......2006-09-25
John Steinbeck was an American classic. His two seminal books, East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath are, in my opinion, both on the top 10 list of American fiction. But readers would be making a big mistake to stop reading Steinbeck with those two novels. The author with this, his breakout book, shows the tremendous breadth of his abilities. This book could be read as pure escapism with a loveable group of unreliable scoundrels. It could also be seen as an early example of beat writers, albeit with a slower pace. But it belongs on all American fiction lovers shelves. It is one of those reads that will stay in most readers hearts and souls.
Funny and sad - and very wise.......2006-08-17
This is John Steinbeck's mock-heroic black comedy about a group of lovable scoundrels who move in with Danny in the run-down section of Monterey shortly after WW I. Many of the scenes are priceless: Sweets Ramirez pushing her motorless vacuum cleaner around the house, which has become a status symbol for her; Pilon renting a room in the house he himself rents from Danny to Pablo Sanchez for $15 - the same amount Pilon pays Danny; Pilon trading Big Joe's blue serge pants for a bottle of wine, only to steal them back again. Each chapter has an explanatory title similar to what you find in TOM JONES ("Chapter XI - How under the most adverse circumstances, love came to Big Joe Portagee"); the contrast between this pumped up solemnity with the usually droll humorous incidents that follow only adds to the book's delight. The book is funny and wise, while also being poignant and sad (Danny dies and both his houses burn down); Steinbeck's characters are devious and untrustworthy, but they are also real human beings who engage life to its fullest. A "serious" book that is sure to put a big smile on your face.

I recently visited Monterey and upon my return home, I became obsessed with Steinbecks novels as many of them focus on this beautiful city. This collection is a great reminder of lifes ups and downs, friendship, and perserverance. Very easy to read and relate to.

Some pretty amazing Steinbeck magic.......2001-12-15
This volume contains some of the earlier works of John Steinbeck. Steinbeck was a master of the English language and had the talent of using the least amount of words to convey the greatest amount of emotions. His stories are moving without being cheap. He is compassionate and had keen insight into his characters and the world at large.
Reviewing each story that appears in this volume is beyond the scope of this review, and you should check out that various titles individually. I will just say a few words about the collection in general. Steinbeck's earlier works are, in my opinion, better than his later, more ambitious works. While his later works can be viewed as some sort of social criticism, these earlier works are simply his personal salute to human nature. Steinbeck knew a basic truth about writing - if you want to write a great book, before you have a great theme, make sure you have great characters, and the rest will follow.
Steinbeck is both profound and very accessible at the same time, which I think is the trademark of a great author. He wrote for ordinary people (unlike, say, Joyce), and at the same time his works are complex enough to be appreciated by scholars. Whatever group you belong to, you will not regret reading this book.
steinbeck at his best in Mice and Men.......2000-10-01
This wonderful novella tells the ineffably sad tale of two itinerant farm laborers in Depression California. George Milton is a small wiry man, his traveling companion, Lennie Small, is a giant, but a simpleton. The two travel from farm to farm, one step ahead of trouble as Lennie's incredible strength and feeble brain continually land them in trouble. Other farm hands are struck by the rarity of finding such men traveling as partners, but Lennie and George have a dream, a dream of a better life. As soon as they can raise $600 they can buy a farm and be their own bosses and Lennie will get to raise the rabbits that he loves, but has a tendency to accidentally crush. Unfortunately, trouble awaits at the farm where they are headed. The ranch owner's son, Curley, can't control his new bride who has "the eye" or his own temper which flares up whenever she starts flirting with the hired hands.
This is one of those books you had to read in 9th grade, largely because it was by a famous author and it's short enough that teachers figure students might actually finish it. If you haven't read it since, give it another try. The relationship between George and Lennie is one of the most beautiful, and oft imitated, in all of literature and the themes of love, friendship, loyalty, courage and the dream of a better life are both timeless and compelling.
GRADE: A+
Of mice and men.......2000-08-09
I read Of Mice And Men because of a school requirement. The themes of Friendship, Loneliness and dreams feature strongly in this book. I felt that I could relate mostly to the theme of friendship, I like, Lennie and George rely on my friends to help and guide me along the way. In this sense I felt a connection with the plot. At the beginning of the book I was not very interested, and first I didn't like it at all, but towards the middle and end I started to be more interested, and I found that I had to finish it as soon as possible. Now, I feel that I have a stronger knowledge of friendship and trust and the limits I would go to for any one of my friends. Besides the book was good, I wouldn't recommend it, to people who don't like to read.

This was the second installment of Lauren Willig's Pink Carnation series. Be sure to read The Secret History of the Pink Carnation first. The Masque of the Black Tulip was funny and romantic. Willig is an excellent writer. I flew right through this book. - worth the money.

I really wanted to like Ms. Willig's books. I was excited when I first saw "Pink Carnation" on the shelves of the bookstore. But I can't read them without feeling as though I'm reading another inadequate Georgette Heyer imitator. I have never found an author who can even approach Ms. Heyer at her best, and all of them seem to use her books as source material (whether they actually do or not, it seems that way). "Pink Carnation", "Black Tulip" et al. also remind me of one of my all-time favorite books, a short, YA title called "The Sherwood Ring" by Elizabeth Pope. Why? Well, its that modern-girl-in-library mixed with chapters of historical fiction approach. The Sherwood Ring worked the same way. OK- accuse me of having read so much historical fiction/romance that I can't avoid seeing similarities. It's probably true, but unfortunately, although I want to love Ms. Willig's books, they seem mostly about repeating conventions, rather than adding new ingredients.

Yet again, Ms. Willig impressed me with her lighthearted take on historical romance/mystery! Although I read these books in the completely WRONG order (first Emerald Ring, then Pink Carnationa, and finally Black Tulip), I was taken in by all of them--this one no less than the others. Although I felt that the "oh no heroine might be compromised marry her off quickly" story line was somewhat repetitive between this installment and Emerald Ring, the stories of Henrietta and Miles vs. Letty and Geoff were different enough to keep me intrigued. I'll just say that I can't wait for the 4th Pink Carnation novel!
Not Much of a Mystery or Historically interesting.......2007-08-15
Being a large fan of historical fiction (and non-fiction), I was prepared for the usual period correct historical backdrop and a story based true events that were wrapped in an intriguing twisting story. I would say on both the historical and mystery fronts, the author only succeeded half way.
Although the novel is technically set during the Napoleon era, the rest of the story didn't fit correctly with the time period. The banter was amusing, but unlike what people would say at that time. In addition, there were references to things, such as adoption, which I believe didn't exist at the time in the way Henrietta referred to it (put oneself up for adoption). The interactions seemed to be supplanted from the present to that era, with the only the costumes and setting working for the period theme.
The "mystery" of who was the Black Tulip was not interesting or a mystery. Vaughn being the Black Tulip was a dead horse that was so obviously not correct. Most of the plot wasn't about the Black Tulip, but the romance between Miles and Henrietta. I am a fan of romance novels, but this wasn't the plot. The romance distracted from the real goal of the book, which was spy with a flower alias.
I thought the book was a good read, but would not read it again. The author should have picked a genre. She didn't pick a historical novel, a mystery or a romance. She had some jumbled hodge-podge of all three that didn't harmonize.
Better than THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE PINK CARNATION.......2007-06-13
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series - THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE PINK CARNATION. I thought it was funny and imaginative. But the second book is even better. The author finds her stride.
The story of Lady Henrietta and Miles is better developed. I continue to like the switching back and forth between the current romance/mystery and the 200-year-old one, although some say the story about Eloise and Colin is superfluous.
If you like this book, don't miss the first in the series or the next, which is THE DECEPTION OF THE EMERALD RING.
