Book Description
This publication presents biokinetic models and best estimates of biokinetic data for some 120 individual radiopharmaceuticals, giving estimated absorbed doses, including the range of variation to be expected in pathological states, for adults, children and the fetus. Absorbed dose estimates are needed in clinical diagnostic work for judging the risk associated with the use of specific radiopharmaceuticals, both for comparison with the possible benefit of the investigation and to help in giving adequate information to the patient. These estimates provide guidance to ethics committees having to decide upon research projects involving the use of radioactive substances in volunteers who receive no individual benefit from the study. This report supplements current and forthcoming ICRP reports, in particular ICRP Publication 52, Protection of the Patient in Nuclear Medicine.

A good overview.......2004-03-04
For anyone involved in radiopharmacy, be it as a radiopharmacist or an imaging technologist, this is a valuable aid touching on just about every facet of a radiopharmacy. While it does not always go into great detail, it is excellent for a grounding in the principles of radiopharmacy.

Book Description
The collection that established O’Connor’s reputation as one of the american masters of the short story. The volume contains the celebrated title story, a tale of the murderous fugitive The Misfit, as well as “The Displaced Person” and eight other stories.
Customer Reviews:
Explore the Dark Side in the Deep South.......2007-09-20
If you every had any thoughts on what the South was like pre 1964, then this certainly is the book for you. Ms O'Connor packs us in and takes us for a long journey into the South. What do we see along the way? Greed, ignorance, hatred under the guise of religion, and even cold bloodied murder. None of the stories come off as preachy, nor are the characters people that we would be drawn to or run from. They are in fact versions of people that we have know in our lives and see every day.
What we see is a glimpse of their core what motivates them. The stories show us that we are a products of our enviornment and the risks of being consumed by it.
for the love of all that is grotesque.......2007-06-10
O'Connor is one of my three favorite Southern writers, along with Carson McCullers and William Faulkner. I just love all that gothy/dark humor, the grotesque characters with their own unique beauty twisted with the ugliness of pride, involved in complex and deformed situations, the bizarre and twisted obsession with Christianity into a warped sense of morality. O'Connor's stories mainly focus on female protagonists that lose a grip on their power over their world, fall from grace and pride, mostly due to shady male figures. She spins fascinating and tragic, yet beautiful tales with a poetic, real style with the third-person limited perspective. Besides Good Country People, my favorite story in this collection was A Temple of the Holy Ghost and A Late Encounter with the Enemy. Excellent short stories from an amazing author. Grade: A
A perfect collection of stories..........2006-09-15
This is probably one of the best collections of short stories out there. Nobody did short stories better. Written fifty years ago, sure, but reading and re-reading these stories over the years, I have to say that O'Connor was one of the best short story writers of the past century, hands down.
I don't care if it's southern gothic or grotesque or whatever O'Connor is labeled in Academia, or whatever her place in literary history may be, or if some readers disagree and find her stories boring or depressing (sigh); these stories are so effortlessly masterful, and when you read an O'Connor story, it's like hearing a unique singer's voice, Johnny Cash or Otis Redding: you know it's O'Connor the second you start the story. Each one begins at just the right moment, the dialogue and characters and situations are so REAL, despite the outward absurdity of them, she convinces you through her rendering, that these events happened.
Think of it her as the reality TV of the fiction world, as horrible as that may sound. Her characters don't "act" and aren't pawned into position, they are real, and they speak realistically, they behave realistically, and the stories are told in such a way that you feel you aren't reading a story at all, but imagining the same dream she had when she wrote them. She never betrays her characters, never condescends or makes fun of them, and her metaphors, BTW, are the best their were ("her face was as broad and innocent as a cabbage"); the way she dropped into a story, pieced out the characters, how she developed tension and situations that often yield tragic circumstances, her language...well, she does it so convincingly, and I am not one easily convinced.
O'Connor was the genuine article, and this book is the evidence of her indisputible greatness. It's been said that O'Connor claimed she wrote all these stories as parables, and I think when you read them you'll see (and what many people have trouble with) is that her stories do have a picaresque quality to them, and the characters at times do seem like stock southern characters. But its how well she knows these characters, how she protrays them that makes them so memorable. She rose to fame being one of the voices of the South - and perhaps some of the book is therefore dated and not as cutting edge as it was then. But it has endured, on the strength and appeal of the stories.
Is O'Connor for everyone? Heck no. But I guarantee you - guarantee you - if you read one of her stories, even if you don't like it, it'll haunt you for years, you'll remember all the little moments as if you'd dreamt them yourself. And you'll come back, whether by accident or purposefully, and you'll re-read the story, and it'll mess you up. She's THAT good.
Do Yourself a Favor and Read Flannery O'Connor.......2006-09-09
Flannery O'Connor is one of great American writers of the 20th century, a Southern Gothic stylist of the first order. She won the National Book Award for the posthumous 1972 collection, 'The Complete Stories'.
O'Connor sets her stories in the rural South and populates them with flawed, grotesque, and twisted characters - this is not the imagined noble, glorious, and chivalric South, but rather the real South of the poor and middling whites of the 1950's(race is mostly in the background). She catches the nuances of human behavior. Her stories have powerful, unexpected and disturbing endings.
Pick up a story and read just one paragraph and you will be hooked.
"The old woman and her daughter were sitting on their porch when they saw Mr. Shiftlet come up their road for the first time. The old woman slid to the edge of her chair and leaned forward, shading her eyesfrom the piercing sunset with her hand. The daughter could not see far in front of her and continued to play with her fingers. Although the old woman lived in this desolate spot with only her daughter and she had never seen Mr. Shiftlet before, she could tell, even from a distance, that he was a tramp and no one to be afraid of..."
Absolutely the highest recommendation.
Classic American Fiction Straight from the Bible Belt.......2006-05-17
The ten short stories in this collection are definitely masterpieces. Neither too long or too short, the stories suggest whole worlds, entire lives (and deaths) with just the right number of verbal brushstrokes. Never preachy or self-righteous, they are yet infused with a deep, complex spirituality that seems to consist of an eccentric and compelling hybrid of Roman Catholicism's quiet mysticism and Southern Protestantism's revivalism and rigor. That said, this is not "chicken soup for the soul"...pretty much every story has a dark edge, and in most of them the author gets you with this impending sense of dread that things are going to go to heck in a hand basket, the only question is how (this makes the book awfully hard to put down, by the way). And she has an incredible talent of capturing the rhythms and characteristic expressions of Southern English without too much Mark Twain twang. In short, this is hands down a classic of American literature.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Man is indeed Hard to Find.......2007-02-21
Flannery O'Connor is the epitome of Christian writing; taking everything you think should distiguish her as such and turning it on its head. She writes with purpose and your job is to decipher the theology she has packed into her incredible stories. Summarizing her own work she wrote, "I once wrote a story called Good Country People. in which a lady Ph.D. has her wooden leg stolen by a Bible salesman whom she has tried to seduce. Now, I'll admit that, paraphrased in this way, the situation is simply a low joke. but without ceasing to appeal to him and without making any statement of high intention, this story does manage to operate at another level of experience, by letting the wooden leg accumaulate meaning." O'Connor's stories sound at times like a bad joke and yet they pack her theology, her world view- her Christian view, into every character and story so that her stories continue to accumulate meaning upon the second and third reading.

Customer Reviews:
Oddball prophets caught in the web they wove themselves........2004-01-08
They are misfits, wanderers, and souls searching for faith and absolution. Many of them are, to one extent or another, hypocrites; others are almost unbelievably naive. All of them are Southerners -- and yet, even the most outlandish among Flannery O'Connor's protagonists come across as entirely believable, complex characters whom, regardless of location, you might expect to come across in your own travels, too; and there is no telling how such an encounter would turn out.
Of course, you would hope it does not prove quite as disastrous as the title story's chance meeting of a family taking a wrong turn (on the road as much as figuratively) and the self-proclaimed Misfit haunting that particular area of Georgia; which culminates in a bizarre conversation, the failure of communication underneath which only adds to the reader's growing feeling of helplessness in view of impending doom. And such a sense of irreversible destiny pervades many a story in this collection; yet, while as in O'Connor's writing in general, her and her protagonists' Catholic faith plays a dominant role in the course of the events, that course is not so much brought about by the hand of God as by the characters' own acts, decisions, judgments and prejudices.
Freakish as they are, O'Connor's (anti-)heroes are meant to be prophets, messengers of a long forgotten responsibility, as she explained in her 1963 essay "The Catholic Novelist in the Protestant South:" their prophecy is "a matter of seeing near things with their extensions of meaning and thus of seeing far things close up." Often, she uses names, titles and items of every day life and imbues them with a new meaning in the context of her stories; this collection's title story, for example, is named for a blues song popularized by Bessie Smith in the late 1920s, and a cautionary road sign commonly seen in the 1950s ("The Life You Save May Be Your Own") becomes the title and motto of a story about a wanderer's encounter with a mother and her handicapped daughter who take him in, only to use that purported charity to their own advantage -- at the end of which, predictably, nobody is the better off. Indeed, the endings of O'Connor's stories are as far from your standard happy ending as you can imagine; and while you cannot help but develop, early on, a premonition of doom, most of the time the precise nature of that doom is anything but predictable.
"A Good Man is Hard to Find and Other Stories" was Flannery O'Connor's first published collection of short stories; yet, by the time these stories appeared (nine of the ten were published in various magazines between 1953 and 1955 before their inclusion in this 1955 collection) she was already an accomplished writer, with not only a novel under her belt ("Wise Blood," 1952) but also, and significantly, a master's thesis likewise consisting of a collection of short stories, entitled "The Geranium and Other Stories" (1947; first published as a collection in 1971's National Book Award winning "The Complete Stories of Flannery O'Connor," although several of those stories had likewise been published individually before). Two of the stories included in "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" count among O'Connor's six winners of the O'Henry Award for Short Fiction ("The Life You Save May Be Your Own" and "The Circle in the Fire," again an exploration of insincerity, half-hearted charity and its exploitation); and the collection as a whole, even more than her first novel, quickly established her as a masterful storyteller, endowed with vision, an unfailing sense for language and a supreme feeling for the use of irony; all of which have long since placed her firmly in the first tier of 20th century American authors.
Flannery O'Connor died, at the age of 39, of lupus, an inflammatory disease which in less severe forms may not be more than an (albeit substantial) nuisance, but which proved fatal in her case as well as that of her father before her. Her literary career, almost the sole focus of her life from the moment that she was diagnosed onwards, was thus cut short way before her time. Yet, to this day her writing holds a unique position in contemporary literature; and "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" is an excellent place to start exploring her work.
Book Description
Lady Luck has hired John Taylor to investigate the origins of the Nightside--the dark heart of London where it's always 3 A.M. But when he starts to uncover facts about his long-vanished mother, the Nightside--and all of existence-- could be snuffed out.
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
We discover more about the Nightside, here, and learn that John was apprenticed to Carnacki the Ghost Finder.
After an auction for the Chaos Butterfly that does not go well, Lady Luck turns up and gives John a job. Given it is one he wants to do anyway, he is happy to stick his nose in, and go looking for the origins of the Nightside.
This is all tied up with who his mother is, the thing no-one will tell him. Taking a Sinner, Demon and Madman with him, he goes questioning the Powers, and has to go past the Lamentation, Herne the Hunter, the Lord of Thorns, Merlin, and Walker and the Authorities to get there.
Myths and Legends multiply it seems, in the Nightside.
Very interesting stuff.
Dark and Funny.......2007-08-13
John Taylor gets hired by Lady Luck herself to hunt down the origins of the Nightside. But there are those that don't want John prying into the past. Along with his ragtag group of companions, John visits some scary individuals and fights off deadly foes to eventually discover who his real mother is.
This installment is by far the darkest and most violent. But still infused with a wonderful dark humor that is as unique as the Nightside itself. Hex and the City brings in more unique and fun characters, and we get to see deeper into John's origins. I had to start reading Paths Not Taken, fifth in the series, immediately after finishing this one.
Mother's Nature.......2007-08-11
Hex and the City (2005) is the fourth urban fantasy novel in the Nightside series, following Nightingale's Lament. In the previous volume, John Taylor and Dead Boy brought Rossignol back from death and Walker took the Cavendishes away. Then Taylor found that his client has been dead for two years; hard to collect from a ghost.
In this novel, Taylor is hired by the Great Auction Hall to watch over the chaos butterfly. Supposedly, possession of the butterfly means control of future events. Most of the major players, or their agents, are in the hall for this auction.
Everything goes well until bidding starts on the butterfly. First everybody starts humming or singing the same song and then the wards and protections break and blow apart. Soon psychenauts show up from the Outside and Taylor takes certain corrective actions.
After the auction hall incident, Taylor passes on the details of where to send his check and goes out for a dinner date with his secretary. Cathy has already selected Rick's Cafe Imaginaire, where the food comes from extinct or imaginary animals. They order dragonburgers and salads, with Cheshire Cat ice cream for desert. After the meal, Lady Luck drops by to offer Taylor a job.
Lady Luck wants Taylor to find out the origins of the Nightside. She offers to tell him about his mother in return for his services. Since Taylor wants to know about the origins as much as about his mother, he agrees to take the job. Naturally, Walker tries to dissuade him.
In this story, Taylor consults the wishing well in the Mammon Emporium. While the future is subject to change without prior notification, the well has a good reputation for predicting the present. For one drop of blood, the wishing well tells him the present location of the Madman.
The Hotel Clappe is very willing to provide Madman's room number if Taylor will only take him away. The desk clerk even says please. Madman sees reality in all its terror and strange things happen around him. Madman agrees to accompany Taylor in his search.
Next Taylor recruits Sinner for the search. Sinner had sold his soul for true love, but Satan cheated. Sinner didn't care and went to Hell still loving Pretty Poison, the succubus of his dreams. Satan wouldn't have a happy Sinner in the nether regions, so he threw him out and Pretty Poison went with him. Rejected by both Heaven and Hell and not really alive nor dead, Sinner is impervious to just about any form of attack.
Taylor interviews residents who have been in the Nightside for a long time; first Merlin, then Herne the Hunter and finally the Lamentation disavow all knowledge of the origins. So he searches back through time. Eventually, he discovers his answer, but the information is more than he really wants to know.
This story involves Taylor's mother. After three volumes filled with allusions to his mother, we finally learn something about her nature and even a little about his father and his friends. Maybe the information wasn't worth the effort, but Taylor does get more than he had expected.
Highly recommended for Green fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of arcane adventure, exotic environments, and strange fellows.
-Arthur W. Jordin
They get better as they go.......2007-03-14
Although I haven't quite read all of the Nightside books yet, they all seem to get better than the previous one and this one is no exception.
Amazing Surprise.......2007-01-03
I was cruising B&N looking for an after-Christmas read when I happened upon this gem. I resisted at first because I am not a fan of sci-fi fantasies, which I presumed from the cover that this was. To an extent it is, so those of you looking for that genre don't despair. However, those of you looking for a solid mystery with well-formed characters (like you've never seen), witty dialogue, and a fast-moving plot will also be satisfied. I always like a little supernatural, mysticism, quirkiness with my mysteries, but not to the point of ridiculousness. This is much more interesting than serial rapists or senseless gory murders amongst a quaint town of typical people. This is smart, smart: psychological mystery with grit. This man is a great writer with a wicked imagination. This is not too far from this world to make sense, but far enough to fascinate and thrill. I plan to read more.

Delightful!.......2006-11-01
This book is deceptively simple, it's truely a grimoire for the modern age. If you don't know about witchcraft or magick already, this book is no place to start. You won't get much of an introduction to the Craft. But it is just packed with modern spells that I've found actually work. The spells appeal to a modern woman's sensibilities. If you are looking backwards to connect with the past, this book is not for you. If you are looking forwards for delightful modern interpretations, this book gives a starting point to play with.
Awfully cute.......2003-10-01
This book is so cute with its modish drawings of 20-somethings, like a scene out of that TV series Friends, that I almost bought it. Me. An experienced witch in her 40's.
I sat in a bookstore and looked through it at length. It's almost like a high-fashion comic book, what with all the drawings. But what I couldn't figure out was, who is this aimed at?
It seems to be aimed at the postadolescent, just out of college and moving to the big city for her first apartment, roommate, job, etc. (I guess this is where the teen witch is supposed to go when she graduates from Silver Ravenwolf-land? I always wondered about that, anyway.)
BUT...
Most postadolescents I know are rather uncreative in terms or religion (if indeed witchcraft is viewed as a religion, which is a matter of personal choice). They tend to either ignore it or go along with what they were taught as children. Many of the more committed act on beliefs formed during college or high school (which is probably a good explanation for all that "teen witch" marketing). Generally, however, it seems like early 20's are so busy trying to set up their lives that they don't have time to think about it. Either that, or they were raised in the Craft. For someone in this last category, this book will probably be of no use or interest.
If you're a non-witch, don't expect to learn anything about witchcraft from this book (except a tiny bit of window dressing about how a spell is constructed), and don't expect the spells to work unless you're really lucky or specially talented. Just look at the pictures and enjoy them. The illustrator who worked on this book is hugely gifted.
Other than that, I really can't tell who the audience for this book might be. Perhaps it might make a good gag gift on the birthday of that friend who has everything.
