Hardbound. In this volume, there are five reviews of topical subjects. The availability of drugs for the successful treatment of many diseases results in an increase in the number of people who live to their eighties and nineties at which time Alzheimer's disease is most prevalent. The steady progress which is being made in our understanding of this complex disease and in the development of drugs for its treatment are reviewed in Chapter 1. Chemotherapy of another disease which often resists treatment may have another weapon in its armoury if recent work on modifying a naturally occurring anticancer compound (camptothecin) succeeds in reducing its side-effects; recent efforts in this field (described in Chapter 2) may yield a drug of value in treating cancer of the colon and stomach. Transporting a drug molecule to a specific site of action continues to present a challenge. The use of phosphates and phosphonates to protect the drug from hydrolysis or o

Book Description
Lipids in Photosynthesis provides readers with a comprehensive view of the structure, function and genetics of lipids in plants, algae and bacteria, with special emphasis on the photosynthetic apparatus in thylakoid membranes. This volume includes the historical background of the field, as well as a full review of our current understanding of the structure and molecular organization of lipids and their role in the functions of photosynthetic membranes. The physical properties of membrane lipids in thylakoid membranes and their relationship to photosynthesis are also discussed. Other topics include the biosynthesis of glycerolipids and triglycerides; reconstitution of photosynthetic structures and activities with lipids; lipid-protein interactions in the import of proteins into chloroplasts; the development of thylakoid membranes as it relates to lipids; genetic engineering of the unsaturation of membrane glycerolipids, with a focus on the ability of the photosynthetic machinery to tolerate temperature stress; and the involvement of chloroplast lipids in the reactions of plants upon exposure to stress. This book is intended for a wide audience and should be of interest to advanced undergraduate and graduate students and to researchers active in the field, as well as to those scientists whose fields of specialization include the biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, biophysics and biotechnology of membranes.

Book Description
Increases in various fungal infections due to Candida, Aspergillus, Blastomyces, Histoplasma spp., and Dermatophytes have attracted interest in the biochemistry of the fungal pathogens responsible. This book discusses the importance of lipids in pathogenic fungi and how they are involved in infections that pose serious health problems. The role of lipids in dimorphism, adherence, and virulence of fungi is investigated as is their composition and metabolism. Several chapters are devoted to examinations of specific pathogenic fungi, which will be particularly useful to researchers studying the clinical manifestations of infections caused by these factors. Later chapters present possible antifungal agents and nonconventional agents that target the organisms discussed earlier. Collectively, the contributions to this volume provide an excellent overview of this field. This text is essential for practicing clinicians and for everyone involved in the important task of resolving the problems associated with fungal pathogenicity.

Description:
Several recent studies have indicated that an enriched atmosphere of carbon dioxide (CO"2) could exacerbate the intensity of plant invasions within natural ecosystems, but little is known of how rising CO"2 impacts the belowground characteristics of these invaded systems. In this study, we examined the effects of elevated CO"2 and nitrogen (N) inputs on plant and soil microbial community characteristics of plant communities invaded by reed canary grass, Phalaris arundinacea L. We grew the invasive grass under two levels of invasion: the invader was either dominant (high invasion) at >90% plant cover or sub-dominant (low invasion) at
<50% plant cover. Experimental wetland communities were grown for four months in greenhouses that received either 600 or 365@mll^-^1 (ambient) CO"2. Within each of three replicate rooms per CO"2 treatment, the plant communities were grown under high (30mgl^-^1) or low (5mgl^-^1) N. In contrast to what is often predicted under N limitation, we found that elevated CO"2 increased native graminoid biomass at low N, but not at high N. The aboveground biomass of reed canary grass did not respond to elevated CO"2, despite it being a fast-growing C3 species. Although elevated CO"2 had no impact on the plant biomass of heavily invaded communities, the relative abundance of several soil microbial indicators increased. In contrast, the moderately invaded plant communities displayed increased total root biomass under elevated CO"2", while little impact occurred on the relative abundance of soil microbial indicators. Principal components analysis indicated that overall soil microbial community structure was distinct by CO"2 level for the varying N and invasion treatments. This study demonstrates that even when elevated CO"2 does not have visible effects on aboveground plant biomass, it can have large impacts belowground.

Description:
Two Finnish agricultural soils (peat soil and loamy sand) were exposed to four freeze-thaw cycles (FTC), with a temperature change from -17.3+/-0.4^oC to +4.1+/-0.4^oC. Control cores from both soils were kept at constant temperature (+6.6+/-2.0^oC) without FTCs. Soil N"2O and CO"2 emissions were monitored during soil thawing, and the effects of FTCs on soil microbes were studied. N"2O emissions were extremely low in peat soil, possibly due to low soil water content. Loamy sand had high N"2O emission, with the highest emission after the second FTC. Soil freeze-thaw increased anaerobic respiration in both soil types during the first 3-4 FTCs, and this increase was higher in the peat soil. The microbial community structure and biomass analysed with lipid biomarkers (phospholipid fatty acids, 3- and 2- hydroxy fatty acids) were not affected by freezing-thawing cycles, nor was soil microbial biomass carbon (MIB-C). Molecular analysis of the microbial community structure with temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) also showed no changes due the FTCs. These results show that freezing and thawing of boreal soils does not have a strong effect on microbial biomass or community structure.

Description:
Experiments were carried out to study the effect of different doses of gamma irradiation (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 kilo gray; kGy) on some nutritive components and chemical aspects pertaining to quality of fish meal and meat-bone meal. The radiation doses required to reduce the total microbial load and Salmonella sp. one log cycle (D"1"0) in fish meal and meat-bone meal were determined. Results indicated that gamma irradiation of fish meal and meat-bone meal with 5-20kGy doses had no effects on the total acidity values but increased the values of lipid oxidation and total volatile basic nitrogen. D"1"0 of total microbial load and Salmonella sp. were 833 and 313Gy for fish meal and 526Gy and 278Gy for meat-bone meal, respectively. It can be concluded that radiation processing could be employed in the recycling of fish and meat-bone meals by using them as feedstuffs in poultry diets with no fear of losing their nutritive components.

Description:
The various roles that microorganisms play in transformation of organic matter in geologic environments are yet to be fully revealed. Many of these roles influence and perhaps control the composition of earth's atmosphere over geologic time by directly impacting global-scale cycling of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and methane. One example is the weathering of black shales. Exposure of organic matter-rich sedimentary rocks to oxygenated earth surface conditions results in significant changes in outcrop-scale rock geochemistry with implications for element cycling on a global scale. This article reviews the progress of ongoing research of a black shale weathering profile exposed near Clay City, Kentucky, USA. Using tools of molecular biology, microbial ecology, isotope geochemistry, and organic geochemistry, this research explores the role of microorganisms in utilization and oxidation of sedimentary organic matter and sulfide mineral oxidation, and examines the communities of microorganisms that may live in this environment. From this and related studies, we are developing greater awareness of the importance of microorganisms in transfer of organic materials among various reservoirs of the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere.

Description:
The relationship among sugar concentrations, microbial community and physical variables (precipitation and soil temperature) was investigated in a ryegrass soil from January 2004 to January 2005. Mono- and disaccharide sugars were extracted using a mixture of dichloromethane and methanol and analyzed as their TMS derivatives by GC-MS. Changes in microbial community were assessed using phospholipid and neutral lipid fatty acids (PLFA and NLFA, respectively) analysis. The results of a one-year study showed that the seasonal variability of sugar contents found in the soil samples is mainly related to biomass or nutritional status of the fungal community. The increase in sucrose and fructose exudation by plant roots in the beginning of the growing season (early spring) may be responsible for the highest fungal biomass amount (PLFAs) observed in this study. Fungal storage lipid abundances (NLFAs) peaked in summer, during the same period that the highest concentrations of mannitol and trehalose were detected. This is consistent with these two sugars being stress-induced fungal metabolites, produced due to the low soil moisture observed during this season. In contrast, bacterial community growth seems to be more dependent on plant substrate than on physical variables, since the strongest decrease in bacterial biomass amounts (PLFAs) was found after cutting of the ryegrass field in early July.
Book Description
The 2005 Summer Selection is available in an exclusive three volume boxed edition that includes a special reader’s guide with an introduction by Oprah Winfrey.
Titles include:
As I Lay Dying
This novel is the harrowing account of the Bundren family’s odyssey across the Mississippi countryside to bury Addie, their wife and mother. Told in turns by each of the family members–including Addie herself–the novel ranges in mood from dark comedy to the deepest pathos. Originally published in 1930.
The Sound and the Fury
First published in 1929, Faulkner created his “heart’s darling,” the beautiful and tragic Caddy Compson, whose story Faulkner told through separate monologues by her three brothers–the idiot Benjy, the neurotic suicidal Quentin and the monstrous Jason.
Light in August
Light in August, a novel about hopeful perseverance in the face of mortality, features some of Faulkner’s most memorable characters: guileless, dauntless Lena Grove, in search of the father of her unborn child; Reverend Gail Hightower, who is plagued by visions of Confederate horsemen; and Joe Christmas, a desperate, mysterious drifter consumed by his mixed ancestry. Originally published in 1932.

Customer Reviews:
Great American literature.......2007-06-28
The Oprah's Book Club is a great, inexpensive way to own these literary pearls. If you do not know what you are getting into I suggest you read first Light in August, then As I Lay Dying and finally, after bracing, The Sound and the Fury. I found the second a tad too dry and dark, but that's Faulkner. The last one is a book you will eventually reread. The first reading could be helped by the many high quality institutional web sites where this masterpiece is dissected and even rearranged for ease of approach. I am witholding a star simply because I have formed the opinion that Faulkner is, to put in mildly, racially biased or at least wrote for the racially biased. I would love to hear what Oprah thinks about this aspect of Faulkner's but I do not have the time. Enjoy.
Challenging and thought-provoking.......2007-01-05
These novels are not to be read for sheer pleasure, but rather for the challenge and the depth. They are not easy to read, though *Light in August* is the easiest of the three. The prose is so difficult at times that I needed to reread again and again. I had to stop and take numerous breaks because my brain got twisted around.
I strongly suggest getting research materials from a university librray if at all possible to help navigate the stories. In the end, the depth of these novels is profound and extremely rewarding. It was only after I finished them (and read a lot of extra research articles) that I truly appreciated them. These novels are definitely amazing and a great account of southern life in the early part of the 20th century (and after the civil war), and I admire Faulkner more than I ever thought I could.
If you thought James Joyce was complex, try Faulkner!
O Oprah.......2006-08-27
AS I LAY DYING by William Faulkner
I respect what he did, but I read about 15% of this one before I got bored. I don't agree with Oprah that he's difficult. I knew exactly where he was coming from and where he wanted to go. Many relevant themes and he was a damn fine wordsmith. But it's old news to this jaded old redneck. I don't know why. I realize I just dismissed an author who deserved his Pulitzers and his Nobel Prize, in a single short paragraph, but please hold back on the hate mail.

THE SOUND AND THE FURY by William Faulkner
Ditto. You hate me, don't you?

LIGHT IN AUTUMN by William Faulkner
Ditto. Hoo boy, now you want me dead.
Quite a challenge for the average reader.......2006-07-25
Quite a challenge for the average reader.
I want to say something like, "you owe it to yourself to read these books."... and perhaps you do. I, however, don't get it. I read the insert by Opera, and all the scholars, I read As I Lay Dying, like I was supposed to, and I simply don't get the allure of Faulkner.
So reader beware. It is a challenge to read Faulkner, not because his ideas are so very profound, but because his writing style leaves me unable to care for any of his characters in any meaningful way. The dialogue is far too folksy, and though I fully realize what he is doing (presenting to us the depth of the human experience by showing us the trials and tribulations of poor folk who are just trying to make a living) I found I had no time to plod through anything more than the first 100 pages.
I realize mine is just one opinion, but think before you buy. In the reader's guide that accompanies the books, Opera suggests that you are not really a reader unless you have read Faulkner. Please take that with a grain of salt and give yourself a break... Faulkner just might not be for you.
Not for me........2006-02-22
I tried, really I did, to read these books. They were very difficult to understand. I even did an online discussion with "experts" to try to figure out what was going on, but it just didn't happen. I read "As I Lay Dying" entirely & the story behind the story told by the "experts" was okay, but did not make the read worth the time. The 2nd book, I couldn't get past the first few chapters & by the third book, I had given up. Definitely not my style.

Book Description
Bradley Warren had lost something very valuable, something that belonged to someone else: a rare thirteenth-century Japanese manuscript called the Hagakure. Everything PI Elvis Cole knew about Japanese culture he'd learned from reading SHOGUN, but he knew a lot of crooks - and what he didn't know, his sociopathic sidekick Joe Pike did. Together their search begins in LA's Little Tokyo, the nest of the notorious Japanese mafia, the yakuza, and leads to a white-knuckled adventure filled with madness, murder and sexual obsession - just another day's work for Elvis Cole.

Stalking the Second Elvis Cole Novel.......2007-04-10
Stalking the Angel, by Robert Crais, is the second entry in the Elvis Cole Los Angeles Private Investigator series. I guess this should be more appropriately referred to as the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series. I read an interview by the author in which he stated that he didn't suggest reading the books in order, as the recent books are much more indicative of his style and the characters. In spite of that, I have elected to read the books in order, and I am glad that I have. This novel dwelves even further into the odd relationship between Pike and Cole. Pike is at ease killing bad guys, or making Cole breakfast.
The mystery here, or case, involves the Japanese mafia, and one very dysfunctional family that hires Cole to locate a missing Japanese treasure. The story was enjoyable and the characters are outstanding. The wise-cracking Cole had me laughing at several times as I read. While Pike in all his stoic glory is a delight. This book really focues on the true ambiguity that sometimes exists between right and wrong and the good guys and the bad guys.
I highly recommend this book and would encourage any potential Crais readers to jump right in. A strong 4 stars.
Stalking the angel.......2007-04-04
captivating suspense story that reads like a goood novel. A pleasure for the novice or the suspense finatic.
Elvis Cole rocks!.......2007-03-30
I'm a big fan of Michael Connelly and the Harry Bosch series. When I found another crime / mystery novel series set in LA, I was hooked. You've got the smartass, charming, darning detective in Elvis Cole. You've got the serious, mysterious character of Joe Pike. It's a great team.
This novel deals with a missing book, a screwed up family and lots of adventuring. I found that I couldn't put this novel down. The chapters were fairly short and the action was fast and furious. And if you live/lived/visited Los Angeles, it's even more fun as there's a lot of good geography contributing to the story.
Thumbs up!
Not Quite As Good As "Monkeys Raincoat", But Still Enjoyable.......2007-01-03
Wisecracking private investigator Elvis Cole and his enigmatic partner Joe Pike are back in "Stalking The Angel", the second novel in the Elvis Cole series. This time Elvis and Joe get involved with the Japanese yakuza when hired by a local businessman to find a priceless Japanese historical artifact. When Elvis gets too close to the truth, the businessman's teenage daughter is kidnapped for leverage.
While the idea of the plot is novel, I found it to be somewhat less interesting than his previous novel. Don't get me wrong - it's still a good read, but at times a bit disjointed, and a couple of little things bugged me. For instance, I found the idea that a Japanese thug would have the Chinese name "Tang" to be somewhat doubtful. While still a smartass, the one-liners Cole drops are a little less funny than in the previous installment. On the plus side Robert Crais keeps on developing the two main characters, allowing little glimpses inside their psyche that made me want to come back for more.
Such a disappointment.......2006-11-28
I have read several Elvis Cole novels and really enjoyed them all... until this one. The plot was just SO unbelievable!!! He goes out on a limb (not unusual for Elvis) but for such a teeny, tiny reason, then, there's a ton of violence and posturing (OK, so that's not unusual for him, either). It was the assumptions he made and the unwelcome "Knight in Shining Armor" schtick that really got to me. Maybe I've just read one too many of his, or something.
Also, I must say, that I rely heavily on Publisher's Weekly Reviews to help me determine which books to read (so many books, so little time...), and I feel the review for this book was way off base.
And, honestly, how does Elvis pay his mortgage and power bills? I've yet to see him take money for a case, isn't he supposed to be a 'professional' private eye?? I just could NOT suspend disbelief while reading this book.

Fab Book!.......2005-01-24
This was an awesome book! It's so dramatic and moving and suspensful! I could not put any of these three books down! Elizabteh Chandler draws you into the story of Ivy and Tristan and almost makes you feel apart of the story! I cried over 7 times during this whole book! I HIGHLY suggest it for someone who enjoys romance and suspense!
a thriller.......2003-12-08
this book has a thrilling and a semi comical sense to it. it's one of those "i just can't put this book down" books. it is filled with mystery and thrill through out the whole book. as you read this book the plot thickens. make sure you read the first one (Kissed by an Angel)first because you would be lost.
Beautiful!!!.......2002-12-14
This book is so great. i found it at a threft store. I loved it. If u have never read it u are missing out. It makes u believe that all love is eternal. even after death!! I give Power of Love 5 stars. No make that 10!
All Three Books........2002-03-15
I think this book is the best book that I have ever read in my life . I loved this book so mouch that I have read it about ten times scince I was able to get my hands on it. whenever I have any free time I find myself reading the book. No matter how many times I read this book I am still findig new, and more intresting stuff that I never read before, and every time I read it I understand why he did what he did. All in all I would have to say that this book is the best in the world, and if your like me, and you love ramance then you will love this book. Oh! I also think that this book should be a movie it would be souch a good movie, if thay didn't chang any of the lines, or any of the book. They should leave it just the way it is, and that way the movie would be as good as, or even better than the book.
Kissed By An Angel.......2000-03-23
I love this book. I havent read the whole book just yet, but i am hooked! This book is very recommendable for teens. I am definitly going to read Kissed By An Angel-The Power Of Love, that is, after i get finished reading this one.
