Beware the audio book verson.......2007-09-13
Be forewarned: the narrator of the audio book version is an unfortunate cross between J. Peterman from Seinfeld, Mike Wallace from 60 Minutes, and the narrator of old elementary school film strips. The content is very good (as described in other reviews posted here) but you should have a friendly warning about the audio version. The narrator will put you to sleep.
Short, Fast, and Informative.......2007-04-25
"The Reluctant Mr. Darwin" by David Quammen is a concise, fun, and fast read. If you want to learn the bullet points about Charles Darwin's life and the formative people, events, and intellectual and social climate that surrounded Darwin's publication of the On the Origin of Species, then this book is for you. Quammen does not spend too much time on any one point, but maintains a theme that Darwin was not lazy in publishing his famous book many years after his voyage but reluctant, wanting to make sure his ideas were sound and well evidenced.
An outline of Darwin's life can be found in many places, even Wikipedia, but what makes Quammen's book particularly helpful is the sections he devotes to writing about Darwin's contemporaries and their contributions to natural history and Darwin's work. Quammen writes about Charles Lyell and his advocacy of the idea of uniformitarianism, the idea that was formed by slow-moving processes, which opposed the idea of catastrophism, the idea that was consistent with Christian theology of the times and based on the belief that certain catastrophes shaped the geologic features of the earth as it is today. Quammen also writes about John-Baptiste Lamarck and his idea of the inheritance of acquired traits, an idea that has been found to be incorrect, but one that Darwin uses in his famous book. These sections in "The Reluctant Mr. Darwin" give historical and scientific context to Darwin's work and allow the reader to more completely appreciate the specific and significant contribution that Darwin made in advocating the idea of evolution by natural selection.
Another important aspect of Quammen's book was how Quammen made it a point to show the evolution of Darwin's famous publication from its infancy, where he first wrote his ideas in journals titled Journal A, Journal B, Journal C, and so on to his obsession with writing a tome that covered every possible argument and objection to his idea with as much evidence as possible to his final rushed publishing of On the Origin of Species due to the threat of Alfred Russel Wallace nearly publishing the same theory before Darwin himself.
This book definitely gives the reader a good picture of Darwin and the social and scientific climate in which he lived. I came away from the book having what I felt was a basic yet complete understanding of Darwin's life.
On the Evolution of Darwin.......2007-04-25
I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a quick read on the life and works of Charles Darwin. David Quammen beautifully integrates excerpts from primary sources into this biography, really making the work a book, and not just a really long research paper. The sections are smartly headed and the writing style is engaging and makes the biography an easy and interesting read.
The biography itself provides an intimate portrait of Charles Darwin the son, husband, father, friend, etc., which also reveals much about his tendencies as a scientist. The author gives a good overview of all the theories regarding speciation that had already been discussed throughout the intellectual community before Darwin came up with his idea on the "transmutation" of species. It was particularly interesting when trying to imagine a society before the theory of evolution. My struggles to do so only further demonstrate how much Darwin has impacted our modern thinking. Quammen's summary on the ideas and examples provided in "The Origin of Species" may be interesting to many who do not wish to read the 500 pages or so of the actual book, but in my opinion, it was unnecessarily dry and seemed out of place in an otherwise interesting and engaging work.
However, one point that I particularly enjoyed was the fact that Quammen explored the evolution of Darwin's theory of evolution: from the beginnings of its fabrication in "notebook B" to its revealing to the public in the first edition of "Origins" to subsequent subtle changes in order to rectify problems brought up by opponents and finally to its modern applications in the field of molecular biology. The author definitely provided a persuading argument on the "fitness" of Darwin's great idea.
The Reluctant Mr. Darwin by David Quammen.......2007-03-31
This book is by far one of the best I have read on Darwin. David Quammen puts you inside the period in Enland as well as providing a great understanding of Darwins personal thinking and self doubt as he formulated his theories on evolution. This is an excellent book for anyone but especially a non-scientist such as myself.

This work focuses on the post Beagle period of Darwins life, and although I would have liked more included on Wallace, Lyell,and Huxley, Darwin was the deserving subject.
David Quammen is an excellent writer on science and scientists, and if you are starting with this work, you should check out his other works.

A really informative introduction to Darwin, his ideas, his works, and his impact on science and society. Young people will get a great deal out this volume and will find it perfect for writing reports or preparing for classroom discussions. On the other hand, adults unfamiliar with Darwin's ideas will benefit from the author's impressive job organizing and explaining some potentially difficult to understand material.

Dov Ospovat's book, originally published in 1981, has become generally accepted as one of the most influential books about Darwin published in recent years. Ospovat examines the period of 1838-1859, two decades preceding the publication of On the Origin of Species, in detail and shows that Darwin's views changed quite radically from initially believing that animals and plants were perfectly adapted to their environments, and that evolution only occurred when the environment changed, to believing that living things were not perfectly adapted, were in constant competition with each other, and hence were continually evolving. By placing Darwin within the other biological developments of the day, he is able to show that he was not the scientific recluse of popular myth. He also shows that there was a theological basis for much of Darwin's original 1838-1844 theory, and his later principle of divergence was influenced by his belief in evolutionary progress.

Exupery's Essential Wisdom Distilled For a Quick Drink.......2006-11-09
This is an extremely short read. It took me 10 minutes, and I am a slow reader. The quotes have been pulled from Exupery's seven works. I am not crazy about Exupery's storytelling such as The Little Prince, but I can tell that he was a deep and caring thinker. Every now and then one of his observations is so artistically succinct and beautifully rendered that it bears restatement.
Here are my favorite quotes from this book:
"People haven't time to learn anything. They buy things ready-made in the stores. But since there are no stores where you can buy friends, people no longer have friends."
"Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward together in the same direction."
"People have forgotten this truth... But you musn't forget it. You become responsible forever for what you have tamed."
"A civilization is built on what is required of men, not on that which is provided for them."
"The tree is more than first a seed, then a stem, then a living trunk, and then a dead timber. The tree is a slow, enduring force straining to win the sky."

This is a very tiny book of excerpts from the writings of Antoine de Saint-Exupery, who wrote THE LITTLE PRINCEbut also much more. The book is a great gift item. You wish it were much longer and that the quotations were cited, so that you know where to go to read the context. Beautifully produced and bound.
Must read for all adults........2005-08-14
This is a must read for all adults. There are so many explanations about emotions and the meaning of love and respect for other humans. After all, we are a disgusting species considering what we do to each other and what we do to ourselves. I am a better man for reading the book.

This small, 83 page book, Guide for Grown-ups, contains selected quotes from the several books and poems that Antoine de Saint-Exupery wrote during his lifetime. The title for this review contains the only words found on page 72. I picked up this book the other day and this quote really spoke to me at this time in my life. I bought several of these with the intention of giving them out as gifts. I still have one left; the quotes are great ones to meditate on. Antoine de Saint-Exupery, writer of The Little Prince, was an aviator who served in the French Air Corps during WWII; he presumably died in 1944 during a mission flying over the Mediterranean. I haven't read any of his books, however, I do love this little one.
Quick read but would be better off with The Little Prince..........2004-08-18
I read this last night and, while it is good and I'm glad I have it around, The Little Prince offers up MUCH more sage advice. However, I will say that I have not read Exupery's other works so I might be speaking hastily but I value my copy of the full text of The Little Prince much more.....

After three decades of successive rounds of negotiations, the EC Convention on Insolvency Proceedings was finally signed on November 23, 1995. Several drafts were discussed and abandoned in the process. This book offers an introductory insight to the 1995 EC Insolvency Convention, beginning with the basic structure of the Insolvency Convention. The 1995 Insolvency Convention equalizes the rights of creditors in the EU on a cross-border perspective by means of a mandatory dividend-received deduction for creditors and a surplus-transfer in favor of the main proceedings. It ensures the equality and uniformity of rights and obligations arising out of the Convention, both for the Contracting States and the parties concerned. For this purpose, it confers on the Court of Justice of the European Communities (ECJ) jurisdiction to rule on the interpretation of its provisions. The Convention represents a major step forward in the international regulation of cross-border insolvencies. It provides a framework of well defined, enforceable rights which will enable a high degree of intra community cooperation. While not a cure-all, for the first time in many years, a European Community (EC) mechanism for a better and more efficient international cooperation is really at hand. The author provides a unique perspective: he was co-author of the explanatory report to the Convention. In this distinctive work, he offers his own personal views on the subject. In recent years experience has shown that the complex issues raised by cross-border insolvencies cannot be adequately addressed by existing national bankruptcy law regimes. In order to deal effectively with such emerging factors as multi-jurisdictional intellectual property rights and contractual issues surrounding employment or immovable property -- as well as such long-standing problem areas as choice of law and recognition of judgments -- a system of international bankruptcy and insolvency law is sorely needed. This important monograph shows how such a system is ready to hand in Europe and potentially available at a global level. As an obvious step in this direction, Professor Torremans examines the EU Regulation on Insolvency Proceedings. He analyses all its provisions in detail, and sets out the solution it puts in place, partial and imperfect as it may be. He concludes that within the EU this Regulation promises to improve matters substantially, and that it bodes well to become a model for international co-operation in this area. To demonstrate the need for a coherent cross-border insolvency law regime, Professor Torremans first describes two very different national approaches, those of Belgium and the United Kingdom. He explores these two traditional approaches in detail, stressing their practical applications, and finds neither system can offer a satisfactory solution in a cross-border context.
