              Book Description

Perhaps Willa Cather's most autobiographical work, The Song of the Lark charts the story of a young woman's awakening as an artist against the backdrop of the western landscape. Thea Kronborg, an aspiring singer, struggles to escape from the confines her small Colorado town to the world of possibility in the Metropolitan Opera House. In classic Cather style, The Song of the Lark is the beautiful, unforgettable story of American determination and its inextricable connection to the land.

              Download Description

In this novel Willa Cather presents Thea Kronberg, a minister's daughter, living with her family in Moonstone, Colorado. After enrolling Thea for piano lessons, Mrs. Kronberg is told that her daughter's true talent is in the beauty of her voice when her teacher hears her sing in church. Thea leaves home to study music in Chicago where she is unaware of the city's hurrying crowds, glittering shops, and loitering men, and is drawn to the art museum and concert hall. Her ambition to become an operatic artist is set in motion, and though she is completely preoccupied with the emotional and intellectual demands put on her by the arduous training required to achieve her goal, she withstands the grueling regimen. She finds a guardian and love interest in Fred Ottenburg who sends her to Arizona to become rejuvenated. Once there she learns to submit to the physical experience and, at the same time, to control the reaction. Ten years later the reader meets Thea who has just returned from Germany and is the leading soprano of the Metropolitan Opera. Sometimes she is tempted by marriage, but art always comes before any other attraction. Cather makes it clear that the serious artist must refuse any claim to personal regard and work to fulfill the rewards of creation in solitude. 5 out of 5 stars A Story of Achievement.......2007-07-02

This is a brilliant and readable novel about the struggles of an artist and the friends who helped her along the way. To be honest, the first part of the book didn't pull me in. "Friends of Childhood," which takes up the first 150 pages, is a simple story about a girl growing up in a small town, and the trouble and adventure she finds for herself. It's full of great characterizations, but wasn't quite what I thought I had gotten myself into. The story quickly takes a change of pace as Thea goes to study in Chicago, and her true artistic struggle begins.

Like in her short novel "A Lost Lady," Cather refuses to present Thea as a pleasant, likeable woman who fits some aesthetic ideal that the men in the book wish she could fit. She is at times distant, impersonal and mean. Becoming an artist changed her from the quirky, lively child in the beginning of the book to somewhat of a diva, even though the old Thea shines through. This is disappointing to the reader too, since this pushes us further from Thea as a character, but that's the whole point. This is the kind of book that lingers with you. The characters (mainly Thea, Dr. Archie and Fred Ottenburg) are some you will never forget.

              5 out of 5 stars Perfectly Written.......2006-10-04

I love Cather's work, and The Song of the Lark may be the best one of her books I've read yet...Death Come for the Archbishop has been my favorite of her books for so long that I may not be able to supplant it, but SoL is excellent.

The story revolves around the growth of Thea Kronberg into the artist that she is. We begin with her as a child around the age of 10. Her friends are adults and misfits in the town. We don't hear about her interactions with kids her own age nor really about her being a child at all. What we learn about Thea in the beginning of this book is that it is evident to everyone who knows her that she's gifted, but no one can agree about what. She knows, but she keeps her secret carefully guarded.

She begins to blossom when she is sent to Chicago to take lessons from a renowned piano instructor. It isn't until she mentions, almost on accident, that she sings at funerals that her piano teacher discovers her true musical gift--she has a phenomenal "instrument" (as it is often referred). She then switches teachers to a voice instructor and has to play accompaniment to his other lessons in order to pay for her own lessons. She is discovered by a rich cad-about who falls in love with her and worries that she is suffering under the pressures of being an accompanist to her rigid instructor. He sends her to his ranch in Arizona where she "nests" and comes into her art and her self.

The section in Panther Canyon is so well done that I could read it again and again. I finished it feeling the anticipation of what was going to happen to Thea when I turned the next page--was she going to become the artist she was destined to become or would she fail because of some poor decision or accident or simple poverty? Would she be able to accept her gift and learn to live with it, or would she reject it because it could never meet her ideal.

The last section of the book has Thea returning to New York after spending years in Germany discovering her art. She is singing in opera after opera--a different one every night it seems. She is different characters in different voice ranges and truly shows her artistic abilities both in acting and singing. The critics and public are impressed with her, and her old friends are as well. We finally get her reunion with her early friends, and they sit back and watch as the Artist Becomes.

SoL is such a beautiful book. There were passages that I want to keep in my mind forever. Sections of such perfectly written prose evoking such perfectly poignant thoughts that it drives home the images and reality that Cather was trying to create. I wish I knew more about opera so I could understand more of the symbolism of Thea's different characters, but even so I can "get it" that she's done something amazing in the end.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disappointing This Time........2006-09-14

I love O Pioneers and My Antonia. What happened here? Willa Cather is a wonderful storyteller with so much vitality and so many interesting people in wonderfully pictorial settings. This time, the story, herione, and supporting characters fail to win one over, and the only interesting thing about the book is being able to understand Thea's frustration with less-than-talented people being lauded at a craft she cares more about than breathing and is far more superior at. I'm pretty disappointed on this outing, but two out of three is good, so I'll be back for more Willa. So far, she is my idea of a consummate author.

              4 out of 5 stars Wagner Redux.......2005-10-08

The Penguin Classic Edition is well-documented almost to a flaw; however, if one is not familiar with Wagnerian
Romanticism nor the cultural history of the immigrant experience in the Western plains, the notes strengthen comprehension. Cather's prose often reaches operatic heights although a modern reader may tire of the descriptive "arias", particularly in the latter third of the book. A warning: some of the ethnic attitudes appropriate to a late nineteenth and early twentieth century American piece may offend contemporary readers.

5 out of 5 stars Sacrifice for the sake of Art.......2005-08-03

To read Cather is to see life stripped bare of all but the essentials, then to recognize its beauty anew, and finally learn something original and profound. This is certainly the case with Song of the Lark.

I won't detail the novel in full. Instead I'll try to offer a few pithy observations.

SOTL is epic in scope. The first "act" taking place in Moonstone is so well developed it is a complete story unto itself. As a result, I am glad I read the book tabula rasa. This allowed me read unencumbered by expectations of plot development and to find each new turn in the novel a surprise.

This novel speaks to anyone who has ever wondered if they must reject their home and leave a life behind in order to achieve greatness. This theme is echoed often in modern literature. The Fountainhead by Rand may seem like a strange comparison but in fact, the concept of giving everything to art is fundamental to both author's works, however divergent their style and tone may be.

Regarding the style, I don't seem to recall as much noteworthy prose as Cather's other novels. That said there certainly is much to admire here. I vividly recall the final pages (spoiler ahead) with Thea's theater exit and a friend left among the waiting throng of admirer's. This scene combined with the narration, evokes the loneliness and separation Thea's pursuit of art has created.

I am surprised to find this novel among my favorite Cather books. After reading My Antonia, this novel provides greater diversion from the homogenous world of the prairie. As wonderful as the aforementioned novel is, it's nice to see Cather explore other places with her eye towards the simple, unrefined beauty that is found everywhere.

Complete in one volume, here are three of the most adored works by early 20th-century writer Willa Cather. O PIONEERS! (1913) tells embodies American heroism in one pioneer woman. THE SONG OF THE LARK (1915) plots a great Wagnerian soprano's journey toward her destiny. MY ANTONIA (1918), is the story of a strong farm woman who still affirms her passion for the land after her father's suicide and desertion by her lover.

                Book Description

"Let your fiction grow out of the land beneath your feet." Willa Cather's remark describes her own reasons for re-creating in her powerful fiction the Nebraska frontier of her youth. The vast Great Plains, where the earth has only recently come beneath the plow and the sky is huge and open, mirrors the uniquely American ethic of her characters: their heroic aspirations and stoicism, their passion for creativity, their rebelliousness of spirit. This volume, the first in The Library of America's authoritative three-volume collected Cather, includes the story collection "The Troll Garden," her first work of fiction, along with the beloved novels "O Pioneers!," "The Song of the Lark," "My Antonia," and "One of Ours," which earned a Pulitzer Prize.

5 out of 5 stars Her talent is breath-taking.......2006-06-21

Somehow, though I love to read,I had missed Willa Cather. I had already read and loved Jane Austen but it was not until I read "My Antonia" that I realized what I had missed all of these years. Willa Cather is truly a genius of the written word. To call her writing 'good' or her stories 'enjoyable' is to understate her talent. Her writing is beautiful though the stories are simple. Each place she writes about makes one believe that she lived there all her life. Her book "Saphira and the Slave Girl" would make you think she had lived there and in that time. Many of her stories are out on the prairie and seem to glow with the golden light from the sun on the fields of grain. Her characterizations are simple but profound and she often throws in a dramatic tale told by a character. And yes, this physical book is also beautiful and a joy to read. It makes one wonder about ever reading a cheap paperback again.

5 out of 5 stars Some of Cather's finest work.......2000-10-03

Like all the volumes in the Library of America series, this book is beautiful and made to last. Some readers may be bothered by the thin paper, but it allows so much to be packed into a handy book. As the title states, this is a collection from Cather's early work (her first "first novel," _Alexander's Bridge_, is missing). _The Troll Garden_ is a collection of Cather's early short stories, most in the manner of H. James and have a fin-de-siecle tone. "The Sculptor's Funeral," which depicts a town's inability to recognize achievement in any form but monetary, is perhaps the best. That and two other stories were revised by Cather for _Youth and the Bright Medusa_ (1920 an available in LoA 57 _Stories, Poems, and Other Writings_). Reading the versions side-by-side, one can achieve insight into Cather's growing abilities as a writer. However, the most rewarding read in this volume is _My Antonia_. Cather's first masterpiece depicts the lives of Jim Burden and Antonia Shimerda from their arrival in Black Hawk, Nebraska to twenty years after Jim leaves Black Hawk for a life in the East. Antonia remains in Nebraska, becomes a maid in town, and marries (twice). The theme of the book, from Jim's perspective, is aptly captured in the epigraph: "optima dies . . . prima fugit" (from Virgil's _Aeneid_). Again like all volumes in the LoA, a chronology of the authors life, a "Note on the Texts" and a few notes, containing information on allusions and translations of foreign words and phrases appear at the end of the volume.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely perfect fiction.......1999-05-21

One of my all-time favorite books. Attractively packaged on acid-free paper. Very classic looking. And the fiction is excellent! Her stories about the Plains, the Southwest, Chicago, and Quebec are perfect works of art. I especially liked "Tom Outland's Story" contained within "The Professor's House."

Young Brierley was a healer, until she was betrayed by one she trusted, and her secret heritage as a Sh'ari healer was exposed. On the run from those who would destroy her as they did the rest of her race, Brierley discovered the shocking truth about what really happened to her people.... and fell in love. Now Brierley hides in the mountains, working her way through a tangled nest of secrets and lies in an attempt to bring her people, and their power for good, back into the world. While she does this, her true love has a daunting task: it is up to him to convince his countrymen to find their way past centuries of hate and distrust. For if he cannot do so, not only will Brierley and her dreams for the future be lost to him forever, but his own people may well face the same sort of destruction they wreaked upon the Sh'ari....

With more adventure and mystery, Sea Larks song is a great addition to Mother Ocean, Daughter Sea. There is but one thing i disliked about this book is that a lot of charecterization you were given before is repeated again in this book and even again a third time. I for one do not like to read things i all ready know multiple times. Doing this takes away from the story and prolongs it. Other than that I loved it and would recommend it to anyone who would ask.

3 out of 5 stars Not the greatest, but still pretty good.......2004-06-16

I got both books of this series as a Christmas gift. It's probably not what I would have selected for myself, but I certainly wasn't opposed to reading them.

The Good: Marcellas really excels both at the politics of her kingdom, and presenting them to the reader. I will openly admit that in a lot of books, I'll skim the political stuff because it usually bores me, but in this one, it is the main attraction. The conspiracies are crisp and twisty and intriguing. Marcellas also refuses to paint characters in black and white as the "good guys" or "bad guys" which makes the book a really intriguing read-- in a lesser writer, Melfallen's wife would have be pigonholed as drippy, whiny, or bitchy, but here, she's presented as a troubled woman who just isn't right for her husband; no sin of her own. Characters change sides and change their minds; the book is a thrilling ride for the reader.

The Bad: There's a lot of bad fantasy in the world. A LOT. This is not the worst. But it's not perfect either. The narraction is way too dramatic-- everything is tragic or passionate or breathtaking. Brierley herself is so frequently described as so amazingly perfect and lovely and wonderful as a person that I could barely relate to the character at all. It's almost like Marcellas is a little too excited about her own book.
The second criticism is that there is some really strange moral ground in this book. The main character is supposed to be extremely sympathetic and caring, but in the first book, kills a man and doesn't seem particularly troubled about it, later. (Granted, he was nasty, but still) The characters seem to live in an extremely liberal society that just happens to also have a feudal government. Women are generally accepted in most professions, divorce is perfectly acceptable and a handful of other social practices just seem a little... disjointed.
Also, there are a few plot twists that just don't work, and just come off as stupid; i.e., is there anyone in this stupid place who ISN'T shari'a?

Overall, I feel like Marcellas has a lot of talent as a writer, she just lacks some polish. The shari'a books will drive you crazy sometimes, and at least one "Oh, PLEASE" will probably escape your lips, but they're a fun read, and I, for one, can't wait for the next one.

                    5 out of 5 stars excellent tale-telling.......2004-03-09

I didn't realize this was the second in a series when I bought it. No matter, it explains itself well. I really enjoyed it, especially in that the plot is sufficiently complex and only got more so as the book went on, and that all the characterization is sound and attractive. I will definitely be buying the rest of the trilogy and likely anything else the author comes up with. It is a clearly seen World, with no distressing over-similarities to any other fantasy realms I'm familiar with. The magic is neither cheesy nor impossible to understand. I don't see any real flaws in this book, and recommend it to lovers of Morgan Llywelyn, Andre Norton, Robin McKinley and Cecilia Dart-Thornton.

3 out of 5 stars Keep Going ..........2003-11-07

The first book, "Mother Ocean, Daughter Sea," was wonderful in the way is built complex characters in which no one person was completely evil or good. The inner workings of the personalities are beautifully woven into the plot development. However, it irked me how the book just stopped at the end!

Of course, I immediately began to read the second book, "The Sea Lark's Song." I felt you needed a scorecard to keep track of the nobelity past and present. It seemed to introduce too many new characters without much substance. Again, the book just stopped at the end without any real conclusion or how all the new characters fit together with the ever-convoluted plot.

However, interesting the setting and characters are, I feel like I'm being strung along and tend to lose interest in series that seems to continue indefinately. I would recommend you read this book only if you can patiently await the next (hopefully last book) in the series. I, personally, tend to enjoy books that can stand on their own and only need the previous or next book in the series as garnishment.

4 out of 5 stars when's the next one coming??.......2003-11-04

This book was, overall, terrific. The word "lusty" may have been used one too many times... but I digress. Aside from a few overused words, I think this book is right on par with the first in the series. I can't wait for the third to come out!

When the wisp of a mountain girl walks through his front door, Stephen Wentworth knows there has been some kind of mistake. This beauty in trousers is not the nanny he has envisioned for his mute son Tad. But one glance at Jubilee Jones, and the widower's icy heart melts

This is my favorite book of Sonya Birmingham's! Jubilee Jones has a sweet, innocent and child-like quality. She makes you remember that there's more to life than financial achievements or what's often touted as "success." From her mountain home to Asheville and back again, she leads Stephen Wentworth on a magic journey to rediscover his true self.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great book that you should read right away.......2001-02-08

I loved the beginning of the book a smart, sassy mountain girl who rides into to town on an old ratty looking mule wearing buckskins and kinda just blows off the snide remarks of the so called "well-mannered,civilized" people of the town. She then manages to get a child who hasn't talked or smiled or showed much of any emotion to anyone, not even his own father, in almost a year to smile and accept her in less than an hour of her arrival in town. Also the fact that she is working for the man, Stephan Wentworth, her family hates because of his fathers, the old and terrible Wentworth, terrible logging conditions that crippled her twin brother and the only reason she stays on is to earn enough money to get her sick grandma a good doctors attention. Plus the way she gets him to open up with stuff like a magic garden and magical tricks. And the way she practically blurts out her entire (well not entire) history to Stephan when she first meets him because shes nervous.

Stephen Wentworth can't believe how this mountain girl, who believe's in folklore and magical things, got his son to start talking again in less than two weeks after her arrival. Or how she had captivated his thoughts.

I think you get the picture of how good the book is.

I think the part i liked best about the book was the way she handled the children and townswomen's remarks in the beginning. She handled it in a sort of way that made me want to read more of the book. I don't think i can explain in words how much i really liked it but i just know that you should read it and judge for yourself.

But to warn you it does kinda start to slow down or at least for me it did. I hope you decide to buy the book.
