Book Description
Laser Processing and Chemistry gives an overview of the fundamentals and applications of laser--matter interactions, in particular with regard to laser material processing. Special attention is given to laser-induced physical and chemical processes at gas--solid, liquid--solid, and solid--solid interfaces. Starting with the background physics, the book proceeds to examine applications of laser techniques in micro-machining, and the patterning, coating, and modification of material surfaces. Students, engineers, and manufacturers alike will find this book an invaluable reference work for the state of the art in laser processing.
Customer Reviews:
Over-complex, little use.......2006-02-16
Unfortunately, the science of laser matter interaction is decently described in only few books that can be recommended. This book is not one of them. Author seemingly has very little or no experience in solving physics problems of laser interaction. As a result, the book represents collection of the overcomplicated re-telling of multiple theoretical models. Reader with little to medium background will be better off referring to the original journal publications and books by M. von Almen, S. I. Anisimov, and Yu. P.Raizer. An attempt to formulate the criteria for applicability of the models is nice; however, presented in such a pretentious academic fashion that makes the effort useless. Part of the book describing the chemistry part of laser interaction is interesting, but only as a collection of facts and references. The book can be useful to the scientists with extensive knowledge of the subject as a convenient and relatively up-to-date reference database.
A must have.......2000-09-06
This is a must have for anybody involved in laser interactions or laser processing.

Book Description
A peaceful demonstration in the normally quiet town of Eastvale ended with fifty arrests -- and the brutal stabbing death of a young constable. But Chief Inspector Alan Banks fears there is worse violence in the offing. For CID Superintendent Richard "Dirty Dick" Burgess has arrived from London to take charge of the investigation, fueled by professional outrage and volatile, long-simmering hatreds.
Almost immediately, Burgess descends with vengeful fury upon the members of a sixties-style commune -- while Banks sifts through the rich Yorkshire soil around him, turning over the earthy, unsettling secrets of seemingly placid local lives. Crossing "Dirty Dick" could cost the Chief Inspector his career. But the killing of a flawed Eastvale policeman is not the only murder that needs to be solved here. And if Banks doesn't unmask the true assassin, his superior's misguided obsession might well result in further bloodshed.
Customer Reviews:
Third Book in What Turns Out to be a Wonderful Series.......2007-05-17
Peter Robinson grew up in Yorkshire, and is the author of a number of previous novels featuring Inspector Banks. He is the winner of numerous awards in the United States, Britain and Canada, and in 2002 he won the CWA Dagger in the Library. As I also come from Leeds the background to his stories is something that I have experienced first hand and because of this I have a special affection for his books. However they would be first class crime fiction wherever they were based.
Ironically as usually happens with anti nuclear demonstrations and marches for peace etc. violence breaks out at a demonstration in Eastvale and ends with serious consequences, a police office is stabbed to death. Because of the nature of the crime and where it took place there are literally over a hundred initial suspects, but then these are narrowed down to the people who live at a place called "Maggie's Farm" an isolated house high up in the dale.
Among the suspects is a social worker, Dennis Osmond who is involved with Jenny Fuller, a friend of Inspector Banks. If this isn't a large enough problem for Banks he finds out than an old enemy of his, Detective Superintendent Burgess is to head the investigation. Finally, warned off the case the only way that Banks can achieve any respectability and salvage his career is by finding the killer before Burgess does . . .
Murder + politics = a better than average mystery.......2006-09-24
This third outing for DCI Banks of Eastvale in north Yorkshire includes a generally well thought out plot, though the clues to the reader are a bit thin -- but it's the characters who really stand out. There's a small anti-nuclear demonstration on the town square which turns into a brawl when the police attack the demonstrators and one of the out-of-town cops is knifed. For political reasons, a special investigator is sent up from London -- a right-wing bully-boy named Brewster interested only in fitting up one of the local anti-government politicals for the murder rather than actually solving the crime. He outranks Banks, who is forced to go along with his illegal methods, at least for awhile. Most of the suspicion centers on a communal farmstead where half a dozen artistic activists live and work, and the reader is given plenty of reason to suspect most of them at one point or another. The actual (anticlimatic) solution, however, involves bringing in a new character and new information in the last chapter, which isn't quite playing fair, is it? I really enjoy Robinson's style, though, and the fact that Banks is a very human (and generally humane) person. Though the loathsome Burgess is probably more typical as a cop. (It's also obvious that Robinson has never had to deal with white cops in the American South, who could make Burgess look like a saint.) My only other complaint is that the author makes rather too much, and in an annoyingly detailed way, of Banks taste for American blues music.
Thoughtful Mystery.......2004-12-23
This book, dealing with the death of a policeman at a demonstration, was an excellent read. All characters are portrayed in depth and the mystery is difficult to figure out. The end is plausible - almost realistic. The plotting is done with care and the author pays attention to details. This book is entertaining, puzzling and intriguing.
A good read.......2004-04-05
A well-plotted police procedural mystery with several interesting characters, not the least of which is Superintendent Dirty Dick Burgess. What a piece of work this guy is! This chap alone is worth the cost of the book. And we all know someone like him: callous, mean, racist, sexist, insists that others abide by the very rules that he gleefully violates. And Inspector Banks has the pleasure of working with this guy in order to find out who stabbed a police officer to death during an anti-nuke rally. Banks deserves a promotion!
Disappointing.......2002-04-03
I loved Peter Robinson's "Gallow's View." "A Dedicated Man" slipped a bit. Now there's this one, which I didn't even finish. Too much procedure, not enough Banks. Not enough Jenny. The poor wife is nonexistant. That's where the story lies, not with Maggie's Farm. I will try some more Banks, but I don't know if I can keep going if they fail to engage.
Book Description
Necessary Evils is the third book in the political series by Neesa Hart. Tension mounts as White House chief of staff Brad Benton tries to discover who is behind two failed attempts on his life. Meanwhile, Nicolae Carpathia continues his rise to power. When Brad's boss chairs a committee in Carpathia's organization, Brad finds himself working for the Antichrist. You won't be able to put down this page-turner that runs parallel with the best-selling Left Behind series.

Customer Reviews:
Another great one from the Left Behind Series.......2005-10-02
This is another great book based on the Left Behind series. I hope there is more to come.
Great read for Today.......2005-09-08
This book is very prolific and tellig of today's times. The writers are certainly MEANT to write these books and I appreciate the honesty that is between the lines about the way in which those in authority can and will operate. Thanks for this book. I am so ready ready for the next one.
Shades of Left Behind? Not even close!.......2005-07-18
The book itself is very slow paced, too wordy about unimportant matters and really has little to do with the aftermath of the Rapture. The story is passable, and the author obviously quite knowledgeable in the areas of political jargon, corruption, and comportment, but if you're looking for something comparable to The Left Behind Series, give this one a wide miss. True, it started with the Rapture, but it's all downhill from there, just another droning tale of murder, mayhem, backstabbing, and the political maneuvering and menace that is our government today...as I said, politics as usual. I also find it rather irritating that Ms. Hart and/or Tynsdale Publishing have been allowed to trade on the success of the Left Behind name to sell these books that in no way compare to Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye's wildly popular series.
NICELY PACED POLITICAL INTRIGUE W/STRONG CHRISTIAN MESSAGE.......2005-04-05
I like this series, because I am intrigued by politics. Ms. Hart's description of D.C. intrigue, protocol and culture sound informed and ring true. The action, characterization and dialogue are quite good. The key to Left Behind's political series is that it is intended for a Christian audience--or at least to readers who are sympathetic to evangelical spirituality. There is a lot of dialogue in these pages, and much of it will garner "amens" from the already converted.
Bottom-line: This is intelligent, realistic end-times fiction, with lots of political intrigue, and a direct Christian message. For those with minds open to spiritual discussion, Necessary Evil is an easy recommendation. For those who do not like to be preached at, or who tend to berate anything remotely "religious right," save yourself the antacid and avoid this whole series.
Third in a Series/ Strong Writing.......2005-03-14
The political series of "Left Behind" continues during the first few weeks after the Rapture with more political intrigue, murder, and ominous overtones as Nicolae, the future Antichrist, rises to power. The novel focuses most on Brad Benton, White House chief of staff, with subplots involving his friends: the head of FEMA (Mariette), Pastor Dumont, and the mayor of New York City. The writing and characterization is strong and has built upon the first two novels.
The only difficulty in the book is that the White House conspiracy underway is as incomprehensible as the Iran Contra scandal or Watergate. Basically, some businessman is siphoning off gold out of the country with the help and knowledge of Pentagon and White House cronies.
Several nostalgic touches in this novel are the cameo appearances by Rayford Steele, Buck Williams and Hattie Durham, main characters from the original "Left Behind" series.
Ms. Hart provides the gospel to the reader as she describes the post-Rapture evangelical message given by Pastor Marcus Dumont. Another plus she worked into the context of her writing.
Hopefully, there will be more in the series as book # 3 ends with the signing of a Middle East peace treaty and the beginning of the final 7-year period known as the Tribulation and Daniel's 70th Week. (Daniel 9:27).
Customer Reviews:
Warming - not a romance!!!.......2002-12-04
Just a quick work of advice: this is really not a romance, but a mystery and not a very interesting one at that. Romance is in the background. SInce this is the first in a series of stories about the couple solving mysteries, I would save my money and wait for the last book to come out since I would guess it will be during that book that the romance will really bloom.
Finally: a Regency mystery-romance worth raving about.......2002-10-05
"A Rather Necessary End" is the first in a projected series featuring the detecting adventures of Lady Priscilla Flanders and her friend, Sir Neville Hathaway. And if the future novels in this series turn out to be as good as this one, mystery fans who also happen to be aficionados to the Regency period can look forward to intriguing and engrossing reads down the road.
Lady Priscilla Flanders (the widow of the universally loved vicar of Stonehall-on-Sea)'s well ordered world suffers a severe tilting when, early one evening, she finds the Duke of Meresden dead in her garden, his head bashed in. But if that was not horrifying enough, the knowledge that the village constable considers her to be the prime suspect in the duke's murder would be enough to send most women scurrying to their beds for solace. Fortunately, Lady Priscilla is made of sterner stuff. And she's determined to clear her name, protect her children and discover the identity of the real murderer. And together with her good friend, Sir Neville Hathaway, she sets out to do this. Unfortunately the clues are short on the ground. And save for the slightly suspicious behaviour of the late duke's son and heir, suspects are in short supply as well. Add to that the headache of having her meddlesome aunt descend on her, threatening to remove her children from her 'scandalous' household, and things look truly bleak indeed. And then another worthy villager is attacked. and finally Lady Priscilla begins to see a glimmer at what may be at the heart of the murder and threats...
"A Rather Necessary End" was a real treat for me to read. Finally a good mystery novel that also possesses an intelligent, engaging and grown up heroine! Thank you, Jo Ann Ferguson. "A Rather Necessary End" possesses a rather interesting and intriguing storyline. And the authour tells the story in such a tantalising way that I just had to finish the book in one go. While there are a few twists and turns in the mystery plot, this book is not one of those mystery novels where clues are strewn all over the place so that the reader can try to solve the mystery as the novel unfolds. (But I found that I didn't mind this very much). And while the identity of the murderer became fairly obvious after a while, the motive behind the murder and assaults remained a tantalising mystery till the very end.
Romance-wise, some readers may be a little disappointed that the romance between Lady Priscilla and Sir Neville Hathaway remains a rather muted motif even to the very end. However, since this is to be a series, I do think that everyone can take heart that the romance between these two will come to the fore as the series progresses.
"A Rather Necessary End" turned out to be a truly brilliant and enjoyable read, and one that should not be missed.
Book Description
A touching and beautifully written story of Nick Taylor’s journey with his parents to the end of their lives. Millions of children are taking similar journeys, which is why the Washington Post called A Necessary End “one of the key stories of our time.”
Customer Reviews:
Thought Provoking.......2004-07-05
In recounting his parents final years and decline, Nick Taylor parallels the decisions and painful adjustments of many baby boomers. Each one of us must cope as best we can with family illness and eventual loss, but it is interesting seeing his ways of dealing with it.
A slim 194 pages, so it's a quick read. Recognizing our parents personal needs, but constrained by financial and physical burdens, it will be hard to handle their slide from vital active people, into dependents.
Reading individual accounts like this gives us some mental and emotional preparation.
Timely Read.......2000-08-09
I picked this book up at a garage sale, didn't really know what to expect. The author's story has helped me in my undertaking to be my Dad's caretaker. It shows how we all deal differently with this challenge in our lives. I didn't agree with some of the ways the author handled things, but it validates that we all have to find our own way. This book is a quick read, it's worth the time.
Just Beautiful.......2000-05-17
I was so engaged and moved by this account of Nick Taylor and his parents in their end years. I have been and am the caretaker for my mother, and I found that reading this book strengthened me to do better, and has helped me to be sensitive and accepting of my mother, and of myself. I can't recommend this book enough. It should not be allowed to be out-of-print!
Methinks he doth protest to much.......1999-01-28
This book could have been a tender and healing accounting the changes which aging brings to relationships. It could have been a thoughtful discussion of the practical aspects of nursing home decisions. However Taylor clearly considered it all an inconvenience and a hassle. I suspect he wrote the book as therapy. The woodblock prints were the best part.

Book Description
Nancy Mairs' audio CD, _Essays Out Loud_, features two essays written a few years apart and read aloud by the author. Mair's "On Having Adventures" and "A Necessary End" deal with issues of joy, disability, and death; written from the perspective of a severely disabled person with multiple sclerosis, a recent convert to Catholicism, and a wife and mother. Achingly authentic, Mairs decisively catalogs theological and psychological aspects of her world in gutsy and succinct prose.

Book Description
When 23 year old Katie Maguire graduated from the Miami police academy, she was ready to begin her new career with the South Beach Police Department. That's when Sergeant Steve Callaghan approached her for a special undercover assignment . . . as an underage prostitute. An easy detail, with very little danger. That is, until Murphy's Law took over. Suddenly, the FBI and CIA were involved, as was the mysterious Mr. Smith and his team of mercenaries. The previously routine South Beach vice investigation had now become an international incident involving hostile governments and weapons of mass destruction. Unaware of what was going on, Katie got caught in the middle of the whole mess, finding herself being held captive aboard a luxury yacht, heading halfway around the globe. Her captor was dashing and handsome, and despite her predicament, Katie found herself falling for him. Unfortunately Death had finally caught up to Katie and, with a tenacious grip, was preparing to drag her into oblivion.
