    Book Description

In this stimulating book, Goldsmith argues that biology has a great deal to say that should be of interest to social scientists, historians, philosophers, and humanists in general. He believes that anyone studying the social behavior of humans must take into consideration both proximate
cause--the physiology, biochemistry, and social mechanisms of behavior--and ultimate cause--how the behavior came to exist in evolutionary time. Goldsmith, a neurobiologist, draws examples from neurobiology, psychology, and ethology (behavioral evolution). The result is a work that overcomes many
of the misconceptions that have hindered the rich contributions the biological sciences have to offer concerning the evolution of human society, behavior, and sense of identity. Among the key topics addressed are the nature of biological explanation, the relationship between genes and behavior,
those aspects of behavior most likely to respond to natural selection, the relationship between evolution and learning, and some probable modes of interaction between cultural and biological evolution. By re-examining the role of biological explanation in the domain of social development, the
author has significantly advanced a more well-rounded view of human evolution and shed new light on the perennial question of what it means to be human. His book will appeal to biologists, social scientists, traditional humanists, and interested general readers.

I have found this to be an extremely useful book for introducing students to biological understandings of behavior. I have taught a course in Behavior and Religion, and found no better book with which to introduce laypeople to a biological perspective on altruism and related behaviors which often form the basis for what we consider to be matters of ethics and meaning. From the opening quotation from Robert Trivers ("Natural selection has built us, and it is natural selection we must understand if we are to comprehend our own identities . . .") the reader is forced to carry everyday logic to its obvious conclusion in assessing the cause and function of human behavior. This book has had a tremendous impact on the students in my classes, tumbling them into perhaps their first completely honest, knowing examination of their own meaning. I searched very hard for a book to present basic concepts in ethology to nonmajors, and this book was by far the best I found. Long may it remain in print!

2 out of 5 stars If only the book delivered on the title..........1999-06-14

A very disappointing book about a fascinating subject. Goldsmith appeals neither to the evolutionary biologist nor the casual interested party with this work. No cohesive thoughts run through the book, and Goldsmith is never sure exactly who the audience of his book really is. Examples are strewn together with nothing to tie them together or into a central theme. You can do much better than this book.

They're sisters of the soul, two girlfriends hitting the clubs in search of that oh-so-rare commodity: straight, single guys. Tall, dark, and hands-on...

The last thing Geren wants is a relationship -- most women can't see past his money and his good looks. Attractions flare, connections are made, lives are changed -- and secrets come to light. Together, they are the heat seekers, four daring hearts willing to play with fire -- and take the risk of getting burned....

OK this was not the AVERAGE Zane book so don't even start it if you're looking for one of her CRAZY but Captivating tales of love, lust, and lies because this is not it!

This book has an ok a story line but it's just missing something, some spice & spunk, I'm not sure what but it is but the story read very bland and a little boring.

The main character has a SECRET and it finally comes out towards the end of the book and when it does its like OK you could have been let that cat out the bag!!

Lol I don't know where Zane went wrong but this story had GREAT potential but it did not reach it. I don't recommend it.

      5 out of 5 stars Powerful & Refreshing.......2006-06-03

Heat Seekers is not your ordinary Zane novel. This novel shows her diversity and great talent as a writer. It addresses many social issues that several young adults have had to face or will face. You'll enjoy this refreshing, powerful love story with its great underlying message "we may fall down but we will get up"!~LeBlanc author of "Characters of Lust"

This book is a lil different I must admit...It is not as erotic as her books usually are but she makes up for that with the moral of the story which is great. It only took me 3 days to read. I hope you had as much fun reading it as I did it!!

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-03-21

This book was a wonderful book. This book kept me on the edge of my seat because I wanted to know what would happen next. Zane is one of my favorite authors and she has a way of keeping her readers tuned into the book. I read this book in two days because I could not put it down.

4 out of 5 stars A fairly original vampire story.......2005-02-25

"Heat Seekers" is about a family of vampires who is suddenly under attack from some force. The thing is that they are not being killed, but being put into a comotose state that is actually worst than death. The only person who can help is a mortal, Jamie, who is looking for her missing twin sister. The book is told from two points of veiw; one is first person point of veiw of the vampire Christian, the youngest member of the 'family'. The other is the third person of human Jamie, who is mostly trying to pertect her family from this war; first her sister, then her son. The family has chosen as it's symbol the snake, and most of the vamps have some quality of a snake, and are named after them; i.e. Viper, Ana (short for anaconda), ect. They also have veneom in their vains to render their victims more docile while feeding off them. Another thing about these vampires is that while yes, they require blood as food, what they actually like is human's body heat (hense the name of the book). The heat is like a drug to them, they hate to be cold. Katherine Ramsland is a student of Anne Rice; that is why all these vampires seem like versions of Lestate and Louis or other in the "Vampire Chronicals". But she uses Rice's mythology as a starting point; "Heat Seekers" is not a knock off of Rice's famous tales. It is a lot faster paced than Rice, for one thing, and it dosn't spend a lot of time flashing back to the distant past. "Heat Seekers" has it's own fairly unique story to tell, and it is a good one; if not exactly scary, it is very dramatic and engrossing from beginning to end. All the vampires seem distict from each other, you can tell one from the others. Christian is especially interesting. Young and impulsive, but still very aware that he needs his family to survive. If there is one fault, it is the villian and his plan to destroy the family. I really wish that part was as original as the rest of the book; this guy seemed like a villian from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", and a bad one at that. But that is easily forgivable because the rest of the book is really great.

The unnamed narrator in Jesus' Son lives through a car wreck and a heroin overdose. Is he blessed? He cheats, lies, steals--but possesses a child's (or a mystic's) uncanny way of expressing the bare essence of things around him. In its own strange and luminous way, this linked collection of short fiction does the same. The stories follow characters who are seemingly marginalized beyond hope, drifting through a narcotic haze of ennui, failed relationships, and petty crime. In "Dundun" the narrator decides to take a shooting victim to the hospital, though not for the usual reasons: "I wanted to be the one who saw it through and got McInnes to the doctor without a wreck. People would talk about it, and I hoped I would be liked." Later he takes his own pathetic stab at violence in "The Other Man," attempting to avenge a drug rip-off but succeeding only at terrorizing an innocent family. Each meandering story--some utterly lacking in the usual elements of plot, including a beginning and an end--nonetheless demands compulsive reading, with Denis Johnson's first calling as a poet apparent in the off-kilter beauty of his prose. Open to any page and gems spill forth: "I knew every raindrop by its name. I sensed everything before it happened. I knew a certain Oldsmobile would stop for me even before it slowed, and by the sweet voices of the family inside that we'd have an accident in the storm."

The most successful stories in the collection offer moments of startling clarity. In "Car Crash While Hitchhiking," for instance, the narrator feels most alive while in the presence of another's loss: "Down the hall came the wife. She was glorious, burning. She didn't know yet that her husband was dead.... What a pair of lungs! She shrieked as I imagined an eagle would shriek. It felt wonderful to be alive to hear it! I've gone looking for that feeling everywhere." In "Work," while "salvaging" copper wire from a flooded house to fund their habits, the narrator and an acquaintance stop to watch the nearly unfathomable sight of a beautiful, naked woman paragliding up the river. Later the narrator learns that the house once belonged to his down-and-out accomplice and that the woman is his estranged wife. "As nearly as I could tell, I'd wandered into some sort of dream that Wayne was having about his wife, and his house," he reasons. Such is the experience for the reader. More Genet than Bukowski, Denis Johnson lures us into a misfit soul's dream from which he can't awake. --Langdon Cook

        Book Description

An intense collection of interconnected stories that portray life through the eyes of a young man in a small Iowa town, by the author of Already Dead: A California Gothic, Angels and Resuscitation of a Hanged Man.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding ..........2007-08-09

An intensely virtuous portrait of a life wasted.

This book is a collection of interconnected short stories ... snapshots amidst the murk of a life consumed by drugs -- self-loathing, hopelessness, insensitivity, and a complete detachment from humanity.

Petty crime, overdoses, and one seedy watering hole to the next, the sad and pathetic cast of characters are tragic ... and they know that they are tragic and have accepted the inevitabilities of it. Yet, our protagonist is still able to see the beauty in the world, even through the darkness of humanity.

Every story in this book is as raw as real life can possibly endure and then some ... gritty, darkly humorous, and mortally wounding.

If I could have given this more than five stars, I would have.

This is my second reading of this work and it is still as poignant as it was the first time around.

5 out of 5 stars "And you, you ridiculous people...how do you expect me to help you?".......2007-07-22

The work of German born writer Denis Johnson will hold a peculiar place in the fashionably extensive fictional literature of "addiction", if he really belongs there at all--he transcends the genre he writes within by virtue of his oddly individual voice. You might say that these stories are not unlike something a more coherent David Lynch might pen if he had suffered the horrendous afflictions of drug addiction, alcoholism and also possessed a stronger moral sense.

For all the sordid phantasmagoria in each one of these strangely touching, quietly brutal little parables, Johnson never once takes off from reality completely; in fact, not only is he writing about people and events which are all too real, he is detailing their most intimate characteristics in an uncommonly empathetic way. The ending of "Dundun" is the most painfully illustrative of this uncanny and singular ability.

His instinctive understanding of the relationship between the irredeemably, casually broken and hopelessly lost is not flaunted or made to seem "hip" or anything of the kind: Johnson is aiming for a higher moral vision here, I think, something that hasn't been done before and certainly couldn't by a lesser talent or even an above average writer. This is not an appeal to the drug-addled "Trainspotting" vein (no pun intended) in literature but an amazingly successful attempt to transcend it. Explaining Johnson's unmistakable singularity in words is impossible to do, which is fitting: these tiny allegorical atom bombs are meant to roam through the subconscious, not to be explained logically. Essential reading.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-07-21

This is one of the most accessible and enjoyable collection of short stories I have ever read. He's got a great way of quickly getting to the main event that drives each story (usually something foolish, rediculous, and dangerous). This makes you feel that you don't have get through a learning curve with each new story. Having a main character thoughout all the stories helps too.
The writing itself is stripped down and beautiful. You can tell his background is in poetry. He doesn't spend long paragraphs on physical descriptions, but he does a great job of getting into the head of his desperate, foolish, but decent main character.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Book I've Ever Read a Dozen Times.......2007-07-12

When Johnson was in Iowa City in 2005, he did a reading of some of his newer material from "Tree of Smoke." It wasn't going over particularly well with the audience, and I think he could sense it, so he stopped mid-chapter and asked if anyone had a copy "of this little book I did a few years ago called 'Jesus' Son'." A hundred hands raised, all waiving a copy of this book in the air. It got quite a laugh from both Johnson and the crowd, but that's how powerful this book is. It's so good that I've never read any of his other work, because I don't think I could bear the disappointment. So I keep re-reading "Jesus' Son"...it's almost as if I'm addicted.

5 out of 5 stars Choose your words (and drugs) carefully..........2007-06-17

...and you can end up with a really tiny, really beautiful book like Denis Johnson's drugged-out short story collection Jesus' Son. Johnson's perfect word choice draws even the most square reader into a world of addiction, hallucination, and the emotional fallout from spending too little time sober and too much time chasing excitement. The first story, "Car Crash While Hitchhiking," couldn't be a better intro; it's violent, luminous, and transcendent, and at its unbelievable climax the narrator forges a brief but profound connection as he faces a dying man he has never even met. Johnson can switch from heaviness to humor as in the hilarious "Emergency Room," one of the many tales in this book centering around two lowlifes bumbling around to find their next score. It's a book about risks, youth, boredom, and the pulsing humanity of even the most screwed-up bum sleeping it off on a park bench. Plus, you can fit it in your back pocket.

        Book Description

Israel, the community to which Jesus belonged, took its name from their patriarch Jacob. His story of exile and return was their story as well.In the well-known tale of the prodigal son, Jesus reshaped the story in his own way and for his own purposes. In this work, Kenneth E. Bailey compares the Old Testament saga and the New Testament parable. He unpacks similarities freighted with theological significance and differences that often reveal Jesus' particular purposes. Drawing on a lifetime of study in both Middle Eastern culture and the Gospels, Bailey offers here a fresh view of how Jesus interpreted Israel's past, his present and their future.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Theologians Only Need Apply.......2007-01-10

Kenneth Bailey, one of my pastor's professors from seminary, is a real expert on the cultures of the Middle East and both their impact on the way the Judaeo-Christian Scriptures were written and how they should be interpreted by Western Bible students today. I purchased this volume out of curiosity after reading another of Dr. Bailey's books (which I've also reviewed here). I was not disappointed, however I will warn all readers: his books are not for the light reader! This is HEAVY material! Very scholarly stuff, replete with citations and endnotes ad nauseam! If you are a SERIOUS student of the Bible and you want to delve deeply into the exegetical mysteries of the texts, you'll love Dr. Bailey's books. If not, you'll probably find them insufferably dry and so exhaustively detailed as to suffocate your interest in the subject matter.

        5 out of 5 stars Jesus Retells Israel's Story.......2006-06-22

Certainly Bailey here further contributes to his work on the Prodigal Son by showing with Mid-Eastern sources how Jesus answers his theological critics by retelling an OT story and inserting himself as the hero reconciling the very enemies' accusing him and thereby inserting them in the story as the ones offered this reconciliation.

Bailey's adept insights into sin, reconciliation and Christology are to be keenly noted and praised and utilized. Certainly and primarily this parable is about Jesus as the reconciler, the key to unlocking not only this parable but the Bible itself.

        Worthy of reading, and rereading.

4 out of 5 stars Bailey found it........2006-04-28

Great book. Bailey makes a persuasive case that the story of the Prodigal son is a retelling of the Jacob story. The prodigal son is not a contemporizing of the Jacob story like West Side Story is to Romeo and Juliet. Rather it is a retelling with the crucial elements reversed, slightly altered or preserved. The differences reveal the ministry and mission of Jesus better than the most exhaustive systematic theology. This book goes beyond Poet and a Prophet.

Jesus is a master storyteller. This book facilitates understanding why.

5 out of 5 stars Drink deeply from Luke 15.......2006-01-01

There are portions of the Bible that are shockingly powerful and clear. One such portion is Luke 15 with the Parable of the Lost Sheep/Lost Coin/Lost Son. Bailey is as fine a commentator on this subject as you may find seeing how through this parable Jesus is retelling Israel's story and our own. Simply terrific (as are Bailey's other works!).

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good; Tell's the Story of Jesus' Life.......2007-06-08

This 93-page coloring book has at least a few sentences of storytelling below each page telling step by step the story of Jesus' life from Bethlehem to the cross, resurrection, and ascension.

The drawings are pretty simple and appropriate for coloring by kids of all ages who would enjoy coloring. The stories are told in simplistic language and attempting to keep the message of the story simply. At times I found myself wondering why various stories were skipped or why various details were left out. But I think that in general this was done with good discernment.

My primary complaint is that there is very little from the end of Jesus' life. The Lord's Supper is skipped. The one page from Gethsemane is somewhat disappointing. There is nothing about the arrest or trial and only one picture of the cross. And post-cross there is one picture from the tomb and one from the ascension. This is very disproportionate with the detail given to Jesus' earlier life. It almost seems like the author had a 100 page limit and found himself rushing at the end to make sure that it all fit. I hope that if this is ever revised, more detail is given to this portion of Jesus' life, especially considering the importance of the cross and resurrection to Jesus' life.

Nevertheless, if you are looking for a good coloring book to walk your children through the story of Jesus' life get this, recognizing that you will have to do your own teaching on a lot when it comes to the end of Jesus' life.

              5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-05-25

I started reading this book a few years back in college, but got busy and never finished it. I'm married now and finally had a little time to sit down, and once I started reading it, I couldn't stop! I read half the book in less than a week, which is pretty amazing between work, being married and housework! It was so touching hearing the story of Mary's fears and joys, and little Jesus doing cute things as a baby all the way through his life, plus the life of His friends, siblings, family... the whole thing is fantastic. I would recommend this to anyone!

              5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2003-06-14

I sat down for some leisure reading while my two daughters napped. I was unable to put the book down. This book is a story of Jesus told from Mary's perspective. I felt that it brought me closer to not only my Savior, but also to Mary and Joseph. It also gives you a feel of what it might have been like to live back then. The book is awesome and a quick reader!
