    Book Description

Introduction to Nutrition and Health Research aims to fill a critical gap in dietetics, nutrition and health education literature by providing a comprehensive guide to conducting research and understanding the research of others. Using actual articles, this book teaches how researchers identified problems; how they framed those problems; and how they reported, interpreted and implemented their findings. Step by step, the chapters cover an overview of the process, statistical and measurement concepts, types of research (including experimental, quasi-experimental, descriptive, and qualitative research), how to present results and computer techniques for data analysis. While this book is primarily aimed at masters and doctoral level students and beginning researchers, it will also have strong appeal for teachers, technicians and counselors.

      Book Description

Although they comprise one of the three fundamental branches of life, it was only the last decade that Archaea were formally recognized as a group alongside Eukaryotes and Bacteria. Bacteria-like in that they are single celled organisms that lack a nucleus and intracellular organelles, the Arachaea also share a large gene set typical of eukaryotes, for making and repairing DNA, RNA and protien. More surprisingly, they only inhabit environments typical of the extremes of early earth--hot springs, thermal ocean vents, saline lake, or oxygen deficient sediments. A breakpoint on the common evolutionary path, it is evident that the Archaea diverged early in the history of life, establishing thier importance in evolutionary sciences. Archaea: Ancient Microbes, Extreme Environments, and the Origin of Life tells this evolving story, furthering our understanding of the microbe commonalities, and providing for evolutionary justification in the use of archaea as mechanistic model systems.

      Key Features
      * Provides a unique and current summary of common subcellular mechanisms in archaea and eukaryotes
      * Emphasizes the use of genomics to provide a biological context for understanding archaea
      * Contrasts evolutionary studies on the fossil record with those on molecular phylogeny
      * Includes extensive tables, graphs, images, drawings and other illustrations
      * Simplifies the interdisciplinary challenge necessary to understand the significance of archaea

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Gothic Here.......2007-10-01

This bulky collection of stories, like most which span a writer's life, have patches of unevenness throughout (and my edition goes to 622 pages). The consistent theme of Welty's prose is that the south is definitely a world apart. There are the odd nick-names, the long shadow of racism, and the sense of defeat and enclosure of the post-Civil War South. It is an odd testament of a people and a culture; a part of America but also separated from it; this sense of being at one with the nation but also severed from it makes for interesting, although sometimes tiring, reading.

5 out of 5 stars Mysterious Power .......2007-08-30

Eudora Welty is certainly a master of the short story form and not because she defines it. Rather, she questions it with stories that work wonderfully without plot devices, structure, "political statements," and sometimes, even, reality.

Through such wonderful stories as, "Why I live at the P.O., The Whistle, The Wide Net, A Still Moment, Livvia, Shower of Gold, Ladies in Spring, and Circe," she illuminates common moments which shed light on the way we think and live.

          5 out of 5 stars Buy A Large Highlighter.......2007-08-04

You will run out of highlighter ink reading this one, because there are so many passages you will surely want to reread and savor later.

This grand matriarch of Southern Writer Tradition was first discovered, praised and published by luminaries such as Robert Penn Warren when he was coeditor of The Southern Review, Edward Weeks when he was editor of The Atlantic Monthly, and Mary Louise Aswell, when she was fiction editor of Harper's Bazaar.

This collection of stories is truly worthy to be called a classic. It is sometimes tedious reading, because the stories and characters are complex. After a number of false starts over a period of years, I finally resolved to give this scholarly work the focused time and attention it deserves, and feel richly rewarded for the effort.

Ms. Welty joins the ranks of great writers who prove to us that a great writer does not have to live the experience to effectively write about it. She leaps with ease between characters as diverse as Aaron Burr, a deaf black servant boy, a traveling salesmen, eccentric Southern matrons, and countless others. She portrays them in all of their complexities as if she had lived the experiences of each. Her descriptions of scenes and settings are equally as lucid and believable as if she had first hand knowledge of each. This rare and precious gift is best described in her own words, "I have been told, both in approval and accusation, that I seem to love all of my characters. What I do in writing of any character is to try to enter into the mind, heart, and skin of a human being who is not myself. Whether this happens to be a man or a woman, old or young, with skin black or white, the primary challenge lies in making the jump itself. It is the act of a writer's imagination that I set most high."

5 out of 5 stars one of the best writers ever.......2006-04-21

Welty's stories are ultra compact and pack in history, sociology, and art all in one. She was really an all seeing type of transcendent person. Makes one interested in the deep deep South and see that nothing is worthless or too base, that stupidity and lack of morality unites us all.

5 out of 5 stars "What I do in writing of any character is to try to enter into the mind, heart and skin of a human being who is not myself.".......2005-10-07

This National Book Award winner and treasure trove contain all 41 of Eudora Welty's short stories, including: "A Curtain of Green and Other Stories," (1941); "The Wide Net and Other Stories ,"(1943); the seven interlocking narratives of "The Golden Apples," (1949), "The Bride of the Innisfallen and Other Stories," 1955, as well as two previously uncollected works, "Where Is the Voice Coming From?" (1963), and "The Demonstrators" (1966). Miss Welty also wrote a Preface especially for this edition, in which she says: "I have been told, both in approval and in accusation, that I seem to love all my characters. What I do in writing of any character is to try to enter into the mind, heart and skin of a human being who is not myself."

The intricacies of human relationships is the primary theme in this collection of short fiction. Eudora Welty's works combine wonderful humor and an astute perception of human psychology. Her ear for dialogue is superb and her prose lyrical and nuanced.

Eudora Welty was born in Jackson, Mississippi where she spent most of her life. From the moment of publication, her collections of stories won wide critical acclaim, as did her novels, "The Robber Bridegroom," "Delta Wedding," "The Ponder Heart," "Losing Battles," and "The Optimist's Daughter," which won the 1973 Pulitzer Prize. Her autobiography, One Writer's Beginnings, won both the American Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1984. In 1996, Welty was given France's highest civilian honor, the French Legion of Honor Award.

This is a remarkable compilation of short fiction by one of the most gifted writers of our time. This volume enriches any library it graces. Highly recommended.

                            Book Description

Loop me in, odd one. The words, spoken in the deep of night by a sleeping child, chill
the young man watching over her. For this was a favorite phrase of Stormy Llewellyn,
his lost love, and Stormy is dead, gone forever from this world. In the haunted halls of
the isolated monastery where he had sought peace, Odd Thomas is stalking spirits of an infinitely darker nature

Through two New York Times bestselling novels Odd Thomas has established himself as one of the most beloved and unique fictional heroes of our time. Now, wielding all the power and magic of a master storyteller at the pinnacle of his craft, Dean Koontz follows Odd into a singular new world where he hopes to make a fresh beginning—but where he will meet an adversary as old and inexorable as time itself.

St. Bartholomew’s Abbey sits in majestic solitude amid the wild peaks of California’s high Sierra, a haven for children otherwise abandoned, and a sanctuary for those seeking insight. Odd Thomas has come here to learn to live fully again, and among the eccentric monks, their other guests, and the nuns and young students of the attached convent school, he has begun to find his way. The silent spirits of the dead who visited him in his earlier life are mercifully absent, save for the bell-ringing Brother Constantine and Odd’s steady companion, the King of Rock 'n' Roll.

But trouble has a way of finding Odd Thomas, and it slinks back onto his path in the form of the sinister bodachs he has met previously, the black shades who herald death and disaster, and who come late one December night to hover above the abbey’s most precious charges. For Odd is about to face an enemy who eclipses any he has yet encountered, as he embarks on a journey of mystery, wonder, and sheer suspense that surpasses all that has come before.

5 out of 5 stars I just love Odd Thomas.......2007-10-10

I fell in love with Odd Thomas with the first book. Now there are three and I loved all of them. Dean Koontz is one of my favorite, but he really got me with this character. I think it got to him, too, as Odd has grown and come back to us in two more books. Will there be more? I will be watching for them.

This is probably my least favorite in the ODD series of books. The first ODD book clearly is the best. The second one is pretty good, this is so so. It's a short read for a fat book. The print is large & the lines are spaced apart. Koontz's older works are far superior & well worth reading. Go back 10+ years & read those books, Watchers being a favorite of mine. Brother Odd is a book to borrow from a friend or the library, it's not worth purchasing unless you want it because you already have the other 2.

4 out of 5 stars Brother Odd, Odd Plot.......2007-09-01

This is the first Brother Odd novel I have read. The plot is interesting, albeit very eerie and unusual, involving science and ethics and the existence of God. The plot is resolved in a satisfying manner at the conclusion, but on the way to that conclusion, Mr. Koontz wanders off on tangents, explaining details that are often unrelated to the storyline. The character development is effective. Who could not fall in love with meek and humorous Brother Odd and his ghost companion, Elvis?
It's time for me to give another Brother Odd book a chance.

3 out of 5 stars Good not great.......2007-08-28

Any Koontz novel is worthing reading. Not his best work. Not even his best Odd Thomas book. Of course "Odd Thomas" (the first in series) is pretty hard act to follow. I thought it was better than the second in the series but by no means was it up there with "Intensity" (which may be the best/scarriest book ever written). All in all it's a Dean Koontz book so it better than most out there.

                            Book Description

“The dead don't talk. I don't know why.” But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn. Maybe he has a gift, maybe it’s a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice, and Odd’s otherworldly tips to Pico Mundo's sympathetic police chief, Wyatt Porter, can solve a crime. Occasionally they can prevent one. But this time it's different.

A mysterious man comes to town with a voracious appetite, a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world's worst killers, and a pack of hyena-like shades following him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd’s deceased informants can tell him. His most ominous clue is a page ripped from a day-by-day calendar for August 15.

                            Today is August 14.

In less than twenty-four hours, Pico Mundo will awaken to a day of catastrophe. As evil coils under the searing desert sun, Odd travels through the shifting prisms of his world, struggling to avert a looming cataclysm with the aid of his soul mate and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock 'n' Roll. His account of two shattering days when past and present, fate and destiny converge is the stuff of our worst nightmares—and a testament by which to live: sanely if not safely, with courage, humor, and a full heart that even in the darkness must persevere.

I loved this book! I think Dean Koontz is a great writer and I generally enjoy reading all of his novels. The end had me in tears.

2 out of 5 stars Not for me.......2007-10-05

This was my first Dean Koontz book, and I was pretty disappointed given the rave reviews I have heard about him. I am not saying he is a bad writer by any means, but it turned me off to his books.
In this book I felt like I had to walk a mile to get 50 feet of story. He seemed to keep going on and on with descriptions of things that had no significance to the story. My main issue was his use of dialog, I'm sorry but people just dont talk like that. Let alone a couple of 20 year olds in some podunk town. The dialog between Odd and his girlfriend was very unrealistic and distracting. He is a great writer, but as said in my title, just not for me.

                            5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2007-09-30

Odd Thomas is one of those rare books that artfully marry suspense, humor and writing as cripse as a new morning into one perfect package. Told in a pleasant first-person voice, the story unfolds to reveal a remarkably human character who can see the dead, but not talk to them. There is no pretense here; Odd tries to stop tragedy before it happens yet makes the mistakes that anyone else in his place might do. His tender relationship with his girlfriend, Stormy, and the harrowed and strained moments with his parents are perhaps some of the best moments modern novels can provide.

I listened to the audio book and the actor did a great job. Odd Thomas starts off intriging and amusing. As the story progresses , I have a difficult time maintaining interest in the story. I wish Koone's character Odd Thomas had more encounters with the dead.Odd Thomas is a good character, but I didn't care for the plot.

5 out of 5 stars Another Koontz Masterpiece!.......2007-09-11

If you are not already a fan of Dean Koontz, you will be soon. His books are thoughtful, well constructed, intelligent, with likable characters and unexpected twists.

Odd Thomas is no exception. Probably one of his most likable characters to date, and that is saying a lot. Although I enjoyed the book from the beginning, I don't think I became emotionally invested until somewhere in the middle. It creeps up on you. Then all of a sudden you find yourself scared that something bad will happen to Odd, or to one of his friends.

I can't really comment too much on this book without giving something away, which I abhor doing. Once again Koontz takes us out of the mainstream, and makes up his own rules along the way. Read it for yourself, but make sure you have the other 2 books ready to jump into when you are done.

                            Book Description

Every so often a character so captures the hearts and imaginations of readers that he seems to take on a life of his own long after the final page is turned. For such a character, one book is not enough—readers must know what happens next. Now Dean Koontz returns with the novel his fans have been demanding. With the emotional power and sheer storytelling artistry that are his trademarks, Koontz takes up once more the story of a unique young hero and an eccentric little town in a tale that is equal parts suspense and terror, adventure and mystery—and altogether irresistibly odd.

We’re all a little odd beneath the surface. He’s the most unlikely hero you’ll ever meet—an ordinary guy with a modest job you might never look at twice. But there’s so much more to any of us than meets the eye—and that goes triple for Odd Thomas. For Odd lives always between two worlds in the small desert town of Pico Mundo, where the heroic and the harrowing are everyday events. Odd never asked to communicate with the dead—it’s something that just happened. But as the unofficial goodwill ambassador between our world and theirs, he’s got a duty to do the right thing. That’s the way Odd sees it and that’s why he’s won hearts on both sides of the divide between life and death.

A childhood friend of Odd’s has disappeared. The worst is feared. But as Odd applies his unique talents to the task of finding the missing person, he discovers something worse than a dead body, encounters an enemy of exceptional cunning, and spirals into a vortex of terror. Once again Odd will stand against our worst fears. Around him will gather new allies and old, some living and some not. For in the battle to come, there can be no innocent bystanders, and every sacrifice can tip the balance between despair and hope. Whether you’re meeting Odd Thomas for the first time or he’s already an old friend, you’ll be led on an unforgettable journey through
a world of terror, wonder and delight—to a revelation that can change your life. And you can have no better guide than Odd Thomas.

Love the Odd Thomas books and hope hope hope Dean Koontz comes out with more!

5 out of 5 stars The Second Chapter of Odd.......2007-09-11

First of all, don't read this book unless you have already read Odd Thomas as it contains spoilers for the first book. Just as we don't read the last page first and first page last, or anywhere in between, we also should read books in order for the sake of the story :)

Forever Odd is a good book. With his usual artful style, Koontz flips your emotions as if on a remote control. You feel the fear of the situation, the tension, the thrill, and then flip right back into laughter... and awe. Koontz can tug at your heart strings, but leave you with enough humor that you aren't completely devestated and can smile in spite of it all.

Odd Thomas is a special character. He is one we should all strive to emulate. Compassionate, intelligent, humble, yet confident. And he is surrounded by special people, although they play far less of a role in this book than the previous book.

Not as good as the first, but a close second. Well worth the read and the space on your bookshelf.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Odd Thomas.......2007-08-29

This book is average at best. It was a disapointment compared to Odd Thomas. Seemed like he was cashing in on the success of the first one.

                            3 out of 5 stars Forgettable.......2007-08-25

This mildly entertaining sequel to Odd Thomas is told in the voice of the title character, a lonely and gentle man who can see and interact with the dead, even if they cannot speak back. When the novel opens, Odd Thomas is confronted with yet another dead person, this time the adoptive father of his close friend, Danny. When Odd follows him back to the house, he discovers a grisly scene. To complicate matters, Danny, who suffers from brittle bone disease, is missing, and an (overly) mysterious woman calls Odd to taunt him. Odd is haunted by his past heroic deeds and the loss he experiences as a result. The only dead person he wants to see eludes him.

While the final scenes of the book are suspenseful, the novel suffers from Odd's childlike narrative voice and a failure to make the reader care deeply about the characters. This makes the novel forgettable once the last page has been read. Koontz is good enough to know how to keep the reader turning pages; however, this time his story is too thin and, in some ways, self-indulgent. I could imagine Koontz chuckling over his prose as he reincarnated Elvis again and again. I would have rather done the smiling myself.

Certainly those who loved Odd Thomas should read this novel, as Koontz will, in all likelihood, return to this character. Maybe the next novel will be better.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first one........2007-08-09

This is a much simpler story. The original characters are there, but you feel the Author's angst to get the sequel completed more than the peril of the characters. The first book "Odd Thomas" is required reading before "Forever Odd".
