      5 out of 5 stars Darwin epic.......2005-04-08

Although out of date and superceded by a considerable number of later scholarly works, this account of Darwin and Huxley and the generation of the Origin is still interesting, and profitably read, although some of the views (e.g. the account of the Huxley/Wilberforce debate) have undergone severe revisions.

                            Book Description

This richly imagined novel, set in Hawaii more than a century ago, is an extraordinary epic of a little-known time and place---and a deeply moving testament to the resiliency of the human spirit.Rachel Kalama, a spirited seven-year-old Hawaiian girl, dreams of visiting far-off lands like her father, a merchant seaman. Then one day a rose-colored mark appears on her skin, and those dreams are stolen from her. Taken from her home and family, Rachel is sent to Kalaupapa, the quarantined leprosy settlement on the island of Moloka'i. Here her life is supposed to end---but instead she discovers it is only just beginning. With a vibrant cast of vividly realized characters, Moloka'i is the true-to-life chronicle of a people who embraced life in the face of death. Such is the warmth, humor, and compassion of this novel that "few readers will remain unchanged by Rachel's story" (mostlyfiction.com).

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written; memorable. .......2007-10-09

King Kamehameha V, the last of five Kings of the Hawaiian islands, was descended from the chiefs of many native tribes. A bachelor, he took office in 1863, some 68 years after his ancestor became the first King. One of Kamehameha V's first acts was to set up a settlement for lepers on the island of Molokai. The settlement, known as Kalaupapa, isolated those known to have the disease, which was thought to be communicable. Those isolated to the colony lost all civil rights and became wards of the state, cared for by primarily religious leaders (Father Damien and Sister Marianne Cope among them)as the disease laid waste to their lives. Hawaiians had little choice but to give up their afflicted relatives, even children, and most were vilified for the shame and the fear of being family members of those associated with the disease. Kalaupapa's mandatory isolation policy survived a century, until 1969; leprosy drugs that evolved in the 40's did result in some patients who developed a resilience to the disease being released back into society. An almost barbaric, shameful reaction to an epidemic was therefore a reality of most Hawaiians' existence.

Alan Brennert employs a technique in his book, "Moloka'i" that works best if you are a skilled writer with a vision to combine reality and fiction. In pursuing his novel of life on the "leper's island", Brennert incorporates real-life characters (patients, caregivers and citizens of the world)whom he has renamed, with the central character, Rachel Kalama Utagawa. Rachel is drawn with a crystal clear vision of what a Hawaiian native taken with leprosy as a child, might have grown to be.

In quarantine dictated by the government at Kalaupapa, Rachel struggles a lifetime with the isolation, fear and bravery she needs to sustain herself in the face of what might be the untimely leper's death, or a lifetime without freedom to come and go.

You, the reader, will fall in love with Rachel and be drawn into the world that she is forced to inhabit. And although it is a sad tale, the simple beauty of Rachel's life, her will to enjoy her existence, her losses and her loves, will leave you spellbound.

                            5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2007-09-22

I loved this book. Having family from the Islands, including Molokai, really helped me connect to this story. It is amazing how people with leprosy were treated in the 40's.

                            4 out of 5 stars Molokai..........A miraculous Novel!!.......2007-09-21

Molokai is an inspirational novel. It has been lovingly, and thoroughly researched by Brennert. . The characters are wonderfully drawn and the story is mesmerizing . The topic of leprosy might turn some away, but they will miss an emotional and surprisingly uplifting story. There is an analogy that seems to fit the story for me. In the destruction and ashes of Mt. St Helens volcano came a new soil that was richer and more productive. It generated the lushest and most abundant growth in the aftermath. In Molokai too, the leprosy brings forth heroes and develops inner strength that would never have grown without the suffering, challenges and tests of religious beliefs. Love ,friendship, compassion and community grow and thrive amid the challenges of disease and suffering. Molokai is a wonderful, thought provoking and inspirational novel. The words written by Robert Louis Stevenson after visiting Molokai (page 82)say more than any review can.

5 out of 5 stars A "living" historical novel -.......2007-09-19

I read this book just after returning from a visit to the former Hansen's Disease "internment" colony at Kalaupapa, Island of Molokai in the state of Hawai'i - a sad testimony to how we humans treat others out of lack of knowledge and out of fear. This book is the life story of a child exiled to the Colony at Kalaupapa and although fiction, is accurate to many fine details of the actual place and the experience.
I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN, perhaps because I had just walked into the valley (didn't ride the mules!!) and saw most of the places described in the book. Read it and reflect, read it and cry for the many souls affected by the devastating disease, and society's fear of condition that we used to call Leprosy, and celebrate the medical advances that made this a treatable disease in the last half of the 20th century!!
I live and work in the medical community in Hawai'i, and this book brings an understanding to the history of the islands and it's people.

5 out of 5 stars A supurb work of historical fiction recommended for everyone! .......2007-09-12

Bring your tissues and sense of humor, for this emotional and uplifting work of historical fiction will be sure to have you smiling and crying...sometimes at the very same line!

I am so awed that this novel was written by a man, as Mr. Brennert so thoroughly and accurrately captured the complexity of female relationships- sisters, mothers-daughters; frienships, etc. As I felt upon reading another wonderful work of historical fiction, "Memoirs of A Geisha," I was that much more impressed by the fact of the author's gender and ability to tell the story from the female perspective in a manner which undoubtedly rings true.

Mr. Brennert's researching skills and love of Hawaii - its culture, language and traditions - are evident throughout this multi-generational story about a young girl torn apart from her family and sent (sentenced?) to live in the leper colony in Moloka'i. While I admittedly knew very little about the disease, and Moloka'i, prior to picking up this book, I found it extremely engrossing and hungered to know more - and the author truly delivered, leaving no aspect of what life must have been like there unexplored.

Whether or not this topic sounds like it would interest you, the real reason this novel is so universally appealing is the depth and profoundness of the characters' inter-relationships and love. This is a novel for everyone, would make an incredible book club selection, and I am personally passing along copies to all my friends, since it is one of the best books I have read in a long time and think everyone will love it!

                            Book Description

Leper Priest of Moloka'i traces the life of Father Damien from his boyhood in rural Belgium to his death at the leper settlement after sixteen years of remarkable accomplishments. Damien overcame major obstacles to become a Catholic priest and serve as a missionary in Hawai'i. To his spiritual ministry he added the practice of medicine and the skill of a master builder of chapels, churches, and houses, both professions that he taught himself. He decried human suffering, and in his medical practice he emulated the example of his patron saint, Saint Damien the physician, who led many to Christianity by the example of the Good Samaritan.

This biography presents and analyzes much new information about Damien and his years in Hawai'i. The correspondence between Damien, his colleagues in the Catholic church, his Protestant supporters, and agents of the Hawaiian Board of Health gives a fuller understanding of the extent of Damien's work at the settlement and the tensions underlying his relations with Church bureaucrats, who were both impressed by his energy and zeal and irritated by his willfullness and independence. But even his detractors could not deny that he was almost singlehandedly responsible for tremendous improvements to Kalaupapa in the face of overwhelming odds. This is the story of one humble man with faith in God and in himself, who faced gargantuan challenges and triumphed.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing and inspiring biography.......2002-09-10

Although this book was hard to read at times, I feel like I am a better person for having read it. Father Damien is truely a remarkable individual and his Christlike devotion to the lepers of Hawaii is what made this book so compelling for me. I loved reading about this wonderful, humble man. He loved these people with all his heart and soul. He absolutely changed everything for them, and he not only built churches for them with his bare hands, but he also was their doctor their priest and their friend. When no one would go to the lepers and give them the just the bare necissities of life, Father Damien was a willing and humble servant. I loved this book and know you will come away from reading it, amazed as I was at what this great man accomplished in his short life.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Maui Guide Book.......2004-06-26

This book contains a plethora of information about Hawaii. It has a break down of each part of the Island, activities to go do, and even lists shop names for making reservations or locating once you get to the island. My wife and I have found this book to be very helpful in our planning.

                            5 out of 5 stars 15 Years, 3 Editions, Never Missed A Beat.......2003-12-29

My wife and I have used the Moon: Maui book over three different editions from 1985 until relocating permanently in '99. One copy has been to the island three times, lent to friends. There is no part of the island left uncovered, and authors provide good insight on how to be pleasant guest and not get yourself into unpleasant situations.

This is quite unlike "Maui Revealed", which is quickly becoming "Maui Reviled" for locals. This perception is driven by a considerable increase in trespassing on private property to and bodily waste at spots that used to be local favorites, caused in large part by masses of visitors cluching M.R.

Stick with the Moon: Maui book, and you'll avoid a lot of unnecessary stink eye.

5 out of 5 stars Will Make Your Trip Soo Much More Enjoyable.......2002-10-13

You're spending 1,000-2,000 bucks to go to Maui -- go ahead and spend 20 bucks to have your own in-depth personal tourguide.

This handbook helped make for one of the best vacations of my life. The "insider" information is absolutely indispensible. For instance, there are many, many beaches on Maui, but there are many, many different kinds of beaches. Some with murky water. Some with huge waves. Some not navigable unless you swim beyond volcanic rocks. But there are one or two absolutely perfect beachs. And the Moon Handbook explains it. My girlfriend and I found the beach in front of the Sheraton at Ka'anapali to be the best all-aorund beach. We waded out into the calm waters and swam with sea turtles, right there in front of the Sheraton. This handbook explains, though the "little" details like, parking is difficult near the Sheraton so where to park, what the rates are, even shortcuts between buildings and such. This kind of info is just completely impossible to get anywhere else.

There are discussions of the personalities of various snorkle tour boat crews -- from adventurous, to laid-back. Some snorkle boats provide lunch, others don't. All this info is in the Moon Handbook.

We checked out Haleakala Mountain and Red Hill. With the handbook, we found how to get to Iao Needle. We found which Luau Party was the best for us, etc. Which restaurants to go to. Where to shop in Lahaina. The Sugar Cane Train for an easy-going afternoon. A drive out by the blow-holes on the NW end of the island.

I highly recommend this book before going to Maui. If you don't feel like shelling out 20 bucks, another option is always looking into your local library. Most good public libraries carry Moon Handbooks and they're absolutely free. A must before traveling to Maui, the Valley Island! (the 6th edition also includes info on the islands of Lana'i across the Auau Channel and Moloka'i)

                            Happy vacationing!

                            5 out of 5 stars A Real Guidebook.......2001-12-04

This book is written for intelligent and inquisitive tourists who want to really understand what Mauai is all about. It outshines Mauai Revealed by 100%. I found myself using it every day as it offered a far more indepth look at places not found in any other tourist publication. If flash and hype are not your style, buy this book. Good index, well written, excellent maps. It had plenty of things to do to keep me amazed every day of my two week vacation.

Until Andrew Doughty's "Maui Revealed" was released, this Moon handbook was the best you could get. We used it on our first trip to Maui. Like other Moon Handbooks, it is rich in history and background info, but the practical detail can't compare to "Maui Revealed." We now use this Moon Handbook mainly as a supplement for historical background -- still useful but not our first source. (Most other Maui guides are superficial rubbish.)

5 out of 5 stars The essence and power of Molokai in pictures and words..........2000-04-11

Having had the opportunity to live on Molokai and experience its beauty and power first hand, this book is the only work that I've seen that captures so much of Molokai's essence. Rik's aloha and connectedness to this land and her people shines through each and every picture. And the words accompanying the pictures are genuine and heartfelt.

So many Molokai people and special places are immortalized in his pictures including slack key guitarist Kelii Mawae, fisherman extraordinaire and noni farmer. I read and gaze at this book over and over and never tire of it. It reconnects me with Molokai.

Enjoy! And if you are interested in ancient history of this powerful place, I suggest 'Tales from the Night Rainbow' by Pali Jae Lee and Koko Willis.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishingly beautiful and inspirational Hawaii artbook.......1999-10-15

Moloka`i, An Island In Time is a gorgeously photographed and beautifully designed art book depicting the Hawaiian island of Molokai in a way that nothing before this ever has. The design is by Robin Rickabaugh, who some might remember as the guiding force behind the stunning "Oregon Rainbow" magazine of the 1970s.Photos from this book were excerpted by National Geographic Magazine for an article on Molokai in the 1980s.Precious little has been published about this amazing island, and travel magazine articles to this day do not even give readers a glimpse of what Richard Cooke reveals in this wonderful book.Indeed, Molokai, An Island In Time was the inspiration behind my own book, Driving & Discovering Maui and Molokai. Up until I found Richard's book, I had no idea that Molokai was such a beautiful destination.

I purchased this map so that I could locate the rental property I was considering. It was tremendously helpful. I am able to find landmarks and make informed vacation plans. A wise purchase! I would recommend this to anyone considering a vacation to this "less travelled" island.

From the forward: "This book began as a compliation of stories and remembrances for the children of the 'Okana Kame'ekua. The family elders wanted the children to know who they were and the history of their family. In 1983 the elders of the family decided to share these stories with oftherfamilies of Moloka'i and Hawaii Nei, so they too could know something of their past. Historians and anthropologists differ with some of the material but this is how the stories were told and this is how they are presented."

                                  Book Description

By comparing institutions in Hawai'i and Louisiana designed to incarcerate individuals with a highly stigmatized disease, Colonizing Leprosy provides an innovative study of the complex relationship between U.S. imperialism and public health policy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Focusing on the Kalaupapa Settlement in Moloka'i and the U.S. National Leprosarium in Carville, Michelle Moran shows not only how public health policy emerged as a tool of empire in America's colonies, but also how imperial ideologies and racial attitudes shaped practices at home.

                                    Book Description

The Essential Guides to the Hawaiian islands are both written and published in Hawaii. As such, they have the most up-to-date information, ant they uncover many local favorites that are off the beaten track.

The "Essential Guide to Maui" covers everything you'll need to know for a great Maui vacation, including sections on the islands of Molokai and Lanai, both part of Maui County.

Stunning photographs by Ron Dahlquist, on of Maui's most acclaimed photographers, and Honolulu-based Veronica Carmona, whose work has appeared in "Travel and Leisure" and "Sunset," provide visual counterpoints to the text. These are supplemented with archival photographs and artwork by many of Maui's leading artists.

New maps were created for the book, many of them dramatic three-dimensional depictions of Maui's mountains and valleys.

In addition to information about where to stay and what to see, the "Essential Guide to Maui" provides in-depth material about Hawaii's history and culture. Throughout the book, sidebars tell about ancient Hawaiian legends, art and customs. The emphasis in this guidebook is on places and activities that exhibit a distinctly Hawaiian flavor, that honor and perpetuate the culture of the native Hawaiians.

Included are favorite places to eat, many of which won't be listed in most tourist publications. Luxury hotels and resorts are described in depth. In addition, listings of bed and breakfasts and cottage rentals provide information about more affordable accommodations.

Our top ten essentials, given at the beginning of the book, will help make your Maui vacation an unforgettable experience. With the "Essential Guide to Maui," you will discover how truly remarkable this tropical paradise is.
