      Book Description

The current controversy over teaching evolution in the public schools has grabbed front-page headlines and topped news broadcasts all across the United States. In the Beginning investigates the movement that has ignited debate in state legislatures and at school board meetings. Reaching back to the origins of antievolutionism in the 1920s, and continuing to the promotion of intelligent design today, Michael Lienesch analyzes one of the most formidable political movements of the twentieth century.

Daniel Samson takes us on a personal journey of discovery as he breaks down the supposed barriers between evolutionary science and Christian faith. An engaging, fun, and important read!

      5 out of 5 stars Illuminating!.......2006-12-05

Anyone interested in the divine and interested in Darwin and how they might relate will find this tome of tremendous value. In his honest and unbiased approach, Samson has done the heavy-lifting for us as he doggedly pursues the many fascinating theological implications of evolution. A big book, well researched, and engagingly written

For those of us who were oblivious to the implications of believing in the evolution theory, or content to believe in Adam and Eve while attending church and then evolution while in the classroom, and for those who have given neither a great deal of thought, I wholeheartedly recommend God and Evolution?.
As the controversy between the two camps has come to the forefront in the media and as our children are in or approaching high school where they will be taught evolution or creationism, we will begin to wonder about these beliefs and how to choose between the two. For all of us there will come a moment when we realize the serious importance of this issue and the choice we make.
There is no shortage of books on this subject, but many of them seem more like propaganda than statement of facts; from scientists and creationists alike. We do not want to be recruited, we want to be informed.
In God and Evolution? we learn that we do not have to choose between our religious beliefs and the facts of science; that they are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the author is a former fundamentalist minister! In 544 pages, he lays out extremely well researched scientific facts in a clear and understandable manner and shows us how science can actually dovetail with our faith. This book delivers so much of what is needed in our lives today; I know of no other book that gives real answers to the hard questions we are all asking as does God and Evolution?. Do what I did: read it, read it again, then gift it to someone important in your life. There are few gifts greater than the gift of truth.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Insightful and Stimulating.......2006-12-02

Without reservation I can honestly say that this book is THE most incisive one of its kind on the market today. With a clarity and articulateness rarely found in today's literature the author pushes serious readers to deeply reflect upon things they otherwise just wouldn't want to think about - and into areas all too many naively assume they understand and have their standard pat answers to.

As reviewer Christopher M. Hooker rightly points out below, there are any number of creation/evolution books out there, representing numerous perspectives on the topic, yet sadly not to be taken seriously at all - I know because I've read through many of them. Their biases (religious or secular) are so blatantly obvious to well-read and informed students seriously interested in widening their grasp of this vital subject. Typically such popular works present extremely shallow, misinformed, one-sided, caricature-like "answers" to some of the greatest questions a human being can ask, and to which, fortunately for us, this book thoroughly and profoundly devotes itself to exploring:

"How did we come to be here on planet earth, and by what means?"

"Is physical molecular matter in motion, governed by natural laws and forces that act upon it, all there is?"

"Is there any kind of cosmic intelligence behind existence, or do naturalistic scientists have the more intellectually honest and accurate, though less popular, assessment of reality?"

"Is there any kind of overarching purpose to our brief sojourns on earth, and if so, then how could we possibly come to this kind of knowledge?

These are a sampling of the many fascinating and profound questions this remarkable book seeks to investigate.

Thankfully, the author of this literary pearl serves the seriousness of the subject well by being as ruthlessly objective as humanly possible, yet balanced, in his personal voyage to understand the truths of factual reality (which, as a sideline, is quite an interesting story in itself, as it seems he actually began his journey as a fundamentalist pastor). His all-too-rare kind of example serves as a model to us all - because he courageously refused to protect his cherished convictions from any major issue or implication discovered in his search, as none were left uncovered or unexplored.

Serious readers intent upon deepening and expanding their fund of legitimate knowledge in this area will find much they never knew or perhaps ever considered before, much common ground they can agree with, and perhaps certain areas they may even violently disagree with. This impressive volume is sure to be controversial, no doubt, but you will never be bored, even in some of the necessary technical areas (geology, physics, astrophysics, etc.), for even here the book's clarity and readability stands out.

One recommendation I would make: please avoid the powerful temptation to jump around from chapter to chapter. Read the book SEQUENTIALLY from the very beginning, as each chapter lays important foundational material for the next, which the remainder of the book builds upon and often refers back to. And do take your time reading it - few subject matters are more important to understand and be conversant with in today's modern world.

Science, and one of its more controversial yet foundational paradigms - evolutionary theory - is simply not going away, in spite of all the public fuss and bluster thrown up to the contrary by religious fundamentalists of various sorts. Conventional models of reality are rightly being challenged more and more by new discoveries across many different fields of endeavor, which at this time in history are being made now at exponential velocity. This pace will likely continue from here on out into the future.

Sooner or later all honestly thinking people who respect the role of reason, facts and valid evidence, who want to participate first-hand in the age-old and dramatic quest for truth, must responsibly come to grips with the many philosophical implications the discovery of truth carries with it. Few, it seems, are willing to shoulder this burden these days, preferring instead to withdraw into the mindless yet false refuge of their simplistic worldviews which they delude themselves into thinking they are certain of.

Regardless of the tremendous progress mankind has made thus far, what is known of the universe is still trivial when compared to what remains unknown. At best we only know and understand a few twigs of the mighty tree of reality. And so ALL of us - from wide-eyed beginner to seasoned scholar, from naturalistic scientist to religious fundamentalist - still have MUCH to learn.

Let's all face this basic fact and move forward in our journey together - for along with the priceless possession of freedom, the greatest tool of research in our voyage to understanding has always been, and will continue to be, an open-spirited, teachable, child-like spirit of genuine humility in facing the facts of reality as they are uncovered. To stubbornly deny or fearfully run from them simply because they cannot be forced-fit into our present worldviews, will only court disaster, both individually and collectively. To obstinately remain dug into obsolete, ossified perspectives (secular or religious, either in the name of the scientific establishment or God), to remain inflexible and refuse to revise our outlook in the light of legitimate discoveries will serve no one - be they secular humanist, religionist or the vast mass of us who lay somewhere in between.

Sincere seekers of truth, especially those with the humility to realize they don't yet have all the answers, will find this superbly-written book a good place to begin.

Enjoy the journey - there is none more important.

5 out of 5 stars My Glimmer of Hope.......2006-12-01

I came into contact with Daniel Samson's "God and Evolution?" on a random night while surfing the internet. I had numerous web pages open to Wikipedia and other data sites, for at the time I was desperately trying to correlate my devout spiritual beliefs and the facts of science. While in college I had come across many different view points I had never heard of before, and I was taught things that seemed to directly disagree with my religious beliefs. I was at a point of complete confusion, almost on the brink of throwing in the towel and giving up.

However, when I found Samson's book, I also found a glimmer of hope. This was not a quick flyer thrown together by a fundamentalist Christian with a pre-determined end. This was a library of knowledge collected after 14 years of research, research that the author himself conducted. Not only did Samson read over 400 books to prepare to write this book, he himself took part in researching fossils, astronomy, geology and the other sciences. What set this book apart for me is that this book set out with only one mission: the search for truth.

This book provides ample amounts of scientific evidence. If you are, like me, not of a scientific background, this presents even complex facts in a simple and understandable way. From geology to paleontology to astronomy and so much more, this is basically a summarized scientific history of the universe. Clearly stated: It is very, very well done.

What I needed is exactly what Samson provided. As a pastor for many years, he knew the same biblical texts that I had studied! He knew exactly where I was coming from, and how I almost felt betrayed by religion. In my mind, if the facts of science were correct, then Christianity was not. What makes this book important is that it weaves science and religion together. Instead of creating a great divide between the two, Samson has brought them to work together and shows how logically, biblically and scientifically there are answers to the questions we have.

After reading and re-reading this text, I can boldly say there is no better text that distinguishes the facts of science, the reality of religion and the importance of reason. If man's ultimate goal is to pursue truth, he will have found it here in "God and Evolution?"

      Book Description

The conflict between creationists and evolutionists has raged ever since the publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859. And yet, even as generations of Americans have fought and re-fought the same battles, the contours of the debate have in recent years shifted dramatically. Tracking the dizzying rhetorical heights and opportunistic political lows of this controversy, Larry Witham travels to America's churches, schools, universities, museums, and government agencies to present creationists and evolutionists in their own unfiltered voices. We meet leading creationists and proponents of Intelligent Design such as Michael Behe; evolutionists such as Richard Dawkins; and theistic scientists who describe how they reconcile God and Nature. Today, Biblical literalism is tempered by the Intelligent Design movement, which finds evidence of God's presence in nature's patterns. The once-dominant "young earth" school has been replaced by a creationism that conscripts the language of science to advance the creationist cause. Meanwhile, evolutionary scientists hesitate to point out gaps in their theories for fear that such self-scrutiny could serve as fodder for anti-evolution propaganda. In an age marked both by a rising religious tide and daily scientific breakthroughs, Where Darwin Meets the Bible provides the standard account of this lasting conflict.

Creationism and Evolution have been at loggerheads ever since Darwin's Origin of Species exploded onto the scene in 1859.

Particularly within the United States (which is the prescribed scope of this work,) the contest has been integrated within the political and social weave, especially in terms of education and public policy. Far from diminishing, the battle continues to rage and now the additional wrinkle of Intelligent Design is realigning and redefining the battle.

Witham does a remarkably good job of identifying the major players within the debate and the significant events. He remains remarkably neutral in terms of evaluating the validity of the arguments themselves, and sticks to providing a framework that any reasonable person from either camp, should be able to work through and come away with a better understanding of the issues and how they developed.

This is no small feat given the emotional depth that this argument plums on both sides.

Corallaries exist in terms of defining the arguments on both sides and the interested reader should be able to benefit from the bibliography what they are and where those sources can be found.

If you're approaching this issue in depth for the first time, or even if you already have taken a firm position, you should find this book valuable. You will come away with a better understanding of the history of the conflict and maybe even a better appreciation and understanding of both sides of the argument, if you can maintain enough independence to see it.

5 out of 5 stars One long argument.......2003-05-26

This is an invaluable, and balanced, account of the Darwin debate, with particular attention to the Creationist initiatives of the last generation, climaxing in the Intelligent Design movement with its battle for the schools. The many interviews include vignettes of most of the major players, and help to fill in the behind-the-scenes dynamics of the two camps in ways partisans do not. The period starting with Philip Johnson's Darwin on Trial is especially well covered.
Despite rooting for the science camp, I was struck by the rigidity of the scientific camp and the clear feeling one gets that this is an artificially created culture war that results from the disastrous legacy of reductionist theories promoted ambitiously to rewrite culture from top to bottom. The gang of crackpots that has made evolution service their atheist obsessions has distorted its whole development. That's not a statement in favor of theism in evolution, but of deceptive science used to promote an agenda based on bogus proofs by natural selection. The integrity of science is at risk. The metaphysics of atheism is as severe as the theistic. This has distorted the exposure of the flaws in the theory, all along.
It could never have succeeded and we see the growth of resistance.
What seems surprising and sad is how little the broader spectrum of culture beyond the Creationist niche is aware of or involved in the issues. This abdication of the field by mainstream culture is a puzzle, for the problems with Darwin's theory are not so hard to uncover. One reason is the clear disinformation of overly promoted and under-examined scientism. Part if the reason is the savage attack on the 'two cultures' which were put there to cooperate by constructively opposites perspectives. Now noone would dare think aloud lest they get mauled by the mad horde in the Dawkins jihad.
Since much of the debate is about schools one is struck by the tenacity of scientific obtuseness on evolution, and one must conclude that specialized education is to blame. Scientists tend to be very good about technical subjects but unable to see the broader implications of Darwinism and the harm done by positivistic thinking made general in the name of science. This has nothing to do with religion versus science, as such, and indicates the one dimensional attitude that science in general explains everything, and Darwinism in particular is the great world historical breakthrough that is was not.
This is a very thorough book, and recommended for coming to grips with the cultural politics of evolution.
We need a debriefing of Darwin sometime soon. But the Darwin establishment as this book indicates is so entrenched that this seems unlikely.
It is a scandal that fundamentalists have been the principal party to perform this task. Since I dislike Creationism, that is saying something!

5 out of 5 stars A worthy successor to Numbers.......2003-02-25

Witham's historical and sociological report on the current status of creationism in the United States mostly takes up where Ronald Numbers' THE CREATIONISTS leaves off. Readers will find much information about the new creationist movement that took off in the 1990s, but will also be exposed to the great diversity of thought within the ranks of the creationists and within those of religious scientists (most of whom are also evolutionists) more generally. There is precious little critical analysis in this book, so those who want answers in the creationism vs. evolution controversy will need to look elsewhere (for instance, to Robert T. Pennock's TOWER OF BABEL and Kenneth R. Miller's FINDING DARWIN'S GOD), but anyone interested in getting a broad overview of the modern interaction (or lack thereof) between evolutionary biology and religion will appreciate Witham's work very much.

3 out of 5 stars Potentially useful ... but ..........2003-01-20

While I overall enjoyed this book, providing as it did a number of interesting facts and observations regarding creationism in America, I was left feeling more than a little worried. Not because of what Witham was saying, but because of a number of factual errors in the text which left me wondering regarding the accuracy of his statements within areas that I am less familiar with. For example:

      1. Chambers' "Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation" was published in 1844, not 1840 (p. 46)
      2. The "Center for Science and Cultural Renewal" is actually the "Center for Renewal of Science and Culture" (actually, now it's the "Center for Science and Culture") (p. 69)
      3. The statement that it was claimed that "Mitochondrial Eve" was "the ancestor of modern humans" is somewhat inaccurate (p. 89)
      4. The Human Genome Project did not have the goal to "master the human gene" ... there is no "human gene" (there is, however, a "human genome") (p. 138)
      5. The paleontologist who opposed evolution was Richard Owen. Robert Owen was a socialist thinker and industrialist. (p. 181)
      6. It was Marvin Lubenow who documented the early debates (not Martin, p. 217).

None of this is fatal to Witham's argument. However, it does either indicate sloppiness on either his part, that of the editors at Oxford University Press, or the book's in-house reviewers. One is left distrusting the multitude of other facts he gives and doubting his "impeccable reportage".

In short, good but should have been better,

      5 out of 5 stars A breakthrough Book.......2002-12-26

All indications are that the creation-evolution controversy will continue to heat up as time goes on. Now that Ohio science standards encourage science teachers to include information critical of neoDarwinism when covering evolution, a need exits for more information about the controversy. This book could not have come at a better time. It is also an area I have much interest in. My field is evolutionary biology, and I have become more and more aware of new research that has raised major questions about the orthodox interpretation of neoDarwinism. For this reason the creation-evolution issue is of much interest to me and many others. Actually, I have been researching this topic for over 30 years now and, in my judgment, this book is without question one of the most important works about the creation-evolution ever published (even better than Ron Number's book). Most books and articles on this topic show clear emotional hostility toward one side or the other, and repeat the same incorrect misconceptions almost without end. This book is an honest attempt to look at the whole issue from the eyes of each side and it succeeded very well. The author has done his homework (the 200 interviews and 40 pages of notes, for example, show this). I detected not one major error and only a few very minor errors (unusual in a book on this topic). Witham does a great job covering the different competing schools of Darwinism and briefly summarizing their differences. Witham also clearly shows that, in spite of the almost universal pernicious labeling, the views on this controversy do not form a dichotomy, but exist on a continuum. I predict that his book will become the standard text in this area and will be referred to as a breakthrough work in the future.

This beautiful, 868-page leather-bound volume contains a delightful collection of stories from one of history's most beloved children's authors. Lewis Carroll's stories are still as fresh and appealing as when they were first published more than a century ago. John Tenniel's original illustrations accompany the Alice stories and bring to life the wildly popular characters so well known to us all: the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, and a passel of others.

Carroll, one of 11 children, knows his audience well. His stories--clever, provocative, and bizarre--capture the imaginations of children worldwide. Though a prolific storyteller from childhood, he went on to become a mathematician, a fact evidenced by the Tangled Tales serial, which contains a mathematical equation in each installment.

Other stories included in this collection are "The Hunting of the Snark," which was composed backward, in a sense, when inspiration for the tale came by way of the last line; "Rhyme? And Reason?"; the Sylvie and Bruno books; and the original Alice story, "Alice's Adventures Underground," penned and illustrated in Carroll's own hand. Two never-before-printed poems, originally inscribed in two storybooks and presented as mementos to a little girl and boy, conclude this enchanting collection.

        Book Description

This deluxe edition includes all of Carroll's major fiction and poetry, including Alice and Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, the facsimile of the manuscript of Alice's Adventures Under Ground in Carroll's handwriting and with his own drawings. Also included are a biographical chronology of Lewis Carroll's life, and a selected biography.

5 out of 5 stars ...down the rabbit hole.......2007-04-16

This book is really for the person who is really into Carroll and will read through all of his works. It's a thick volume and is useful to me, but this is because i am writing a book so i'm probably not the best judge since i have to read all of the collected works.

Another astute reviewer said, "Do you really want all of the collected works?" But for the price, i say, you may as well buy the book, then you can see what you like and skip around. Who is to say or dictate that you must read cover to cover. You may find there are writings of Caroll thatyou didn't know about before - such as his poetry and so on.

I own the book and find it very handy for reference but also as a genral book of interst. It's also a good gift book for adults and children alike and is a handsome volume and is not muddled up with annotations like many of Carroll's books are these days, which is fine, but more for the scholar. This is the perfect book to dip into and again, a good gift book and as a former publisher i can tell you that the price-point is excellent for what you get here. A bargain.

If you like Carroll's Alice books, you may as well buy this since it will cost you more or as much to buy both of them. This way, you get both Alice books and then some. There is an argumnt right there.

1 out of 5 stars Very poor service from Amazon.......2006-02-23

I This ordered this item back in Oct. It is now Feb, and I have not yet gotten my book. I just keep getting email telling me that the deliver date has been moved back. This has to be among the worse service I have ever got from from a retailer. As for the book, I really can't say anything about it because I haven't got it yet.

5 out of 5 stars item not available.......2006-02-18

I ordered this item in September 2005, and after multiple extensions, Amazon let me know last week (Feb 2006) that this item was no longer available. They should be taking this item off their listing -- it is a great book to have, but regrettably unavailable.

4 out of 5 stars Do you really want the complete works!.......2005-11-07

'The Complete, Fully Illustrated Works, Deluxe Edition' of lewis Carroll's works may actually be more than you really want. While three of Carroll's works, the two Alice fantasy novels and the long poem, 'The Hunting of the Snark' are major classics of English literature, Carroll wrote an equal or greater amount of pretty dull stuff, primarily the two 'Sylvia and Bruno' novels, which I have never been able to finish.

On the plus side, the fact that this edition is 'fully illustrated', meaning that it has both John Tenniel's illustrations for the Alice stories AND Henry Holiday's illustrations for 'Snark'. Even so, you may just be better off buying just the annotated versions of the Alice stories and the annotated Snark.

        Forewarned is forearmed!

        3 out of 5 stars Kinda disappointed.......2005-01-06

Of course, it is very nice to have pretty much every Carroll work you could want in one volume, however there is one major drawback here. While the blue leather binding and gold gilt text and page edges are quite nice, I found the actual pages to be a very low quality thin paper. Also, the margins are very small, cramming alot of text on each page, while the paper and print quality actually take away a minor of the illustration detail. Overall, not a bad collection, yet I think "The Complete Works of Lewis Carroll" thru B&N is superior even without the bells and whistles.

        Book Description

Simmering with passion, betrayal, and a woman's contempt, Lee Hayes delivers a fiery sequel to Passion Marks in A Deeper Blue.

Intense from beginning, A Deeper Blue hypnotizes readers into a story of lust and love. Kevin Davis finds his tumultuous relationship with his lover Daryl Harris in serious jeopardy. Pulled in different directions, Daryl must choose between the lover he's dreamed about and a new temptation; both of whom have female lovers -- past and present -- who are angry about being betrayed.

Cerina Ford is a woman desperately and whole-heartedly in love with Temple Moore. They share a passionate physical relationship, yet Cerina really desires an emotional connection with Temple -- a connection he is not willing to give. Eventually Cerina discovers Temple has fallen in love with Daryl and her obsession plummets out of control.

Meanwhile, Kevin realizes that he can run, but there is nowhere to hide from a scorned lover. "Kevin finds himself a target of a forgotten lover, who tracks him down from thousands of miles away, and will stop at nothing to ensure total destruction of his life."

With gripping detail, A Deeper Blue intertwines love, hate, jealousy, infidelity, revenge, and ultimately, murder. Author Lee Hayes shows that th eline between love and hate is a thin one -- and that sins from the past can evolve into nightmares of the present.

2 out of 5 stars Zane continues to lower the quality of books.......2007-09-16

I really was excited to get this book. Never been a big fan of Zane, but she is a good storyteller. Horrible with her grammar and literary skills, so when I saw she edited the book I became nervous.
        My fears were well founded.
This should not have gotten past a high school teachers editing pen. Horrible technique, like almost entire pages of one person dialogue.
So many cliches, and the women characters were make believe and unrealistic.
Sentences like "..the music was jumpin', bodies were pumpin', and Temple was ready for some humpin'" made me want to scream. Phrases like "...his bodily movements..." were painful to read.
I struggled to read past the first two chapters, but forced myself to read the entire book.
The author has not gotten the basic idea of "show it, dont tell it"
There has got to be some good black gay writers out here.
This guy has talent and ability, unfortunately he is being tutored by Zane. Which means she only cares about the sex in the book.

5 out of 5 stars A read that you can read over and over.......2007-09-13

I have just finished reading this book. This is my FIRST Book review for amazon, so this means alot. If you love drama, backstabbing, twist and turns, then definity give this a read. This book really didnt have any true Protangist, well except for Diana. I loved the way that Hayes explored the inter working of other characters in this novel. It helped us understand what kind of ratinal the characters think that have when dealing with ALOT of the devious situations the characters had to face. I love when villians meet their match, and I loved the interaction between the female characters. I liked how Hayes put to like minded women from different sides of the tracks and pitted them against each other in various situations in this novel. I couldnt guess who would come as as the victor, The Ghetto strip dancer, or the pompous excutive mogul.
Thats JUST ONE OF THE MANY sub story in this story of strong minded and devious individuals. EVERYONE Main character in this book had alot of self confidence, and is used to everything going their way, no matter how they go about acheiving their prize. This is one of those books I can see BET TRYING TO lanch a movie of. At the end, I didnt really feel bad about any of the character, even if they did come to terms with how they handled certain situations. The name of this should be Passion Marks: Karma is a Bitch LOL
PS: The other reviewers are right about how well this book catch up with ALL the main story plot from the first one, but of course after reading this one, if you havent, you will want to read the first one. And I thought "Anyway the Wind Blows" had some drama. Im doing something that I have not did in a long time, and that is to reread the book again, its just that great. I honestly, hope they DO NOT consider making this into a movie. Its just to much necessary storyline for a movie company to add to the film.

5 out of 5 stars Very Genuine and Passionate.......2007-03-10

Another Five Stars for the author Lee Hayes. I just hope and pray he puts Darryl and Kevin back together again. How I have been searching high and low, up and down, for a relationship just like Darryl and kevin.

        5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-02-15

This was a great book. After I read the first book I had to read this on. Both books are very good. They had me wanting to read more. I am now ready for the next. :)

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Read for a Book Club.......2006-08-08

A Deeper Blue is a great read for a book club or anyone who needs to take away from their own personal dramas and read about someone else's! The characters feel like you already know them or someone who acts just like them. Regardless of sexual orientation, BLUE offers a realistic depiction of what love, pain, betrayal, and heartache can ultimately cause. After reading Blue one has to face reality that for every action, there is a reaction.... and we have to be accountable for them. Passion Marks II: A Deeper Blue is a MUST READ! It's a smoker folks!! (almost made me wanna go out and buy some candles---read the book to find out why)!! lol

ps. RaChelle got what she deserved. Hopefully Lee will let us know what happens with Kevin and Daryl.. I dont think there story is over yet.
