Mycotoxins in the Food Chain.......2007-06-23
This is a collection of 15 scientific papers focused mostly on the issue of mycotoxins in food. If this is your area of interest I would recommend this book, highly recommend it actually. My principle interest is environmental exposure to mycotoxins and for this the book has rather limited use so I was disappointed on receiving it. As is often the case the title is not very revealing of the content; I wish that the title had been something on the order of "Mycotoxins in the Food Chain". There is a chapter on "Mycotoxin interactions" and one entitled "Mycotoxins: metabolism, mechanisms and biochemical markers". If your interest is not specifically on food find the book in the library and copy these chapters.

Book Description
Leading researchers in the field are discovering that mycotoxins pose a significant health risk in both animal feed and foods for human consumption. However, the pace of distributing current information on their findings has been lagging until now. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Mycotoxins in Food summarizes the wealth of the world's most recent research on how to assess the risks from mycotoxins, detect particular mycotoxins and control them at differing stages in the supply chain. Mycotoxins in Food addresses risk assessment techniques, sampling methods, modeling, and detection techniques used to measure the risk of mycotoxin contamination. Current regulations governing mycotoxin limits in food are provided as well. The book includes chapters on the use of HACCP systems and mycotoxin control at different stages in the supply chain. Case studies demonstrate how these controls work for particular products. The last section details particular mycotoxins, form ochratoxin A and patulinto to zearalenone and fumonisins. Assessing, detecting, and controlling mycotoxins is central to guaranteeing food safety. Therefore, it is important to understand the latest discoveries and data concerning these toxic compounds in order to limit animal and human exposure. This work is an authoritative reference for all those concerned with ensuring the safety of food.

Book Description
This is the proceeding of the 5th International Workshop on Food Mycology sponsored by the International Commission on Food Mycology. The workshop took place October 16-18, 2003 in Samso, Denmark.
The Fifth Workshop was attended by some 35 participants, drawn from among food mycology and related disciplines around the world. The workshop was highly successful, with papers devoted to media and methods development in food mycology, as is usual with these workshops. Particular emphasis was placed on the fungi which produce mycotoxins, especially their ecology, and through ecology, potential control measures. Sessions were also devoted to yeasts and the inactivation of fungal spores by the use of heat and high pressure. Nearly 40 scientific papers were presented over three days of the workshop, and these papers are the major contributions in these Proceedings.

Book Description
IARC and the US National Institutes of Health have now been joined by the French Ministry of the Environment for the development of this programme on the establishment and validation of methods which can be used for the decontamination of wastes contaminated by chemical carcinogens and the treatment of spillages with such compounds. Eight volumes have been published dealing with aflatoxins, nitrosamines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hydrazines, nitrosamides, haloethers, aromatic amines and a series of antineoplastic agents (IARC Scientific Publications Nos 37,43,49,54,55,61,64, and 73). In this volume, the ninth of the series, methods of degradation are presented for four commonly investigated mycotoxins: ochratoxin A, citrinin, patulin and sterigmatocystin. In view of new findings, a re-investigation has also been performed for aflatoxins and these compounds have been tested in one of the methods. The five methods presented are described in an ISO style format. They can be applied to various waste categories and three of them to spillage treatment.

Customer Reviews:
enjoyable read........2007-05-13
I had to get this book along with a few others for my literature class, this was the best out of them all. Even though written before my time some of these stories are still relevent, if not more, to this day. My favorite are, Tom edisons shaggy dog, long walk to forever, who am i this time, the report on the barnhouse effect, welcome to the monkey house, tomorrow tomorrow tomorrow,... One that will have you on the edge of you seat is All the kings horses.
Just a great book.
Slow Start, But Plenty of Great Stuff.......2007-01-19
I'm a huge Vonnegut fan, and Welcome to the Monkey House didn't disappoint (although I found the first third of the stories only so-so). But by the middle of the book I was loving nearly everything, and by the end I had read at least seven short stories that rank among my all-time favorites. Not every story is great, of course, but most of them are pretty good. And some of them were incredible.
My personal favorites, which to me were well worth the price of admission, include the following: The Foster Portfolio ... DP ... Report on the Barnhouse Effect ... The Euphio Question ... Go Back to Your Precious Wife and Son ... Unready to Wear ... and The Manned Missiles. Three or four other stories almost made the list as well. Overall I really enjoyed Welcome to the Monkey House, but it did take a little patience to find the real gems in the latter two-thirds of the book.
Great collection of Player Piano era stories.......2007-01-07
First, I want to say I give this collection 5 stars despite the datedness of some of the short stories. I can't fault Vonnegut for when he wrote them. They are like a series of really clever Twilight Zone episodes. It's been literally decades since I first read these. The most memorable is Harrison Bergeron, about a society where the playing field is so levelled that anyone possessing an unfair advantage is given a handicap to prevent them being competitive. It's actually a very Republican story (I'm being funny, a little). The next is the title story, and again it suggests that society has overcompensated for a problem, in this case providing "ethical suicide" for people in order to overcome overpopulation rather than...well, I won't ruin it. Other stories have just stuck with me all this time, like "Who am I this time?" about a man who has no personality except when he is acting in town plays. The thing about all these stories is that they are reminiscent of the Player Piano era. Player Piano is Vonnegut's excellent but outdated story about a society where machines and machine-thinking take over. In the story, there is a checker-playing machine that represents technology gaining ascendance over man. All of the stories in this collection have that 50's feel. If you can overlook that, the morals of the stories are what's important, and they are frequently unexpected. That is the power and beauty of this collection.
Fantastic compilation of short stories, Wonderful performances by narrators.......2006-12-01
All fans of Kurt Vonnegut's literary genius will love the short stories included in this compilation. The stories themselves are pure Vonnegut, but the work done by each of the narrators makes them even better. This is not an audiobook of short stories read by a bland voice artist. The narrators make each story their own, with different voices for different characters, injecting full personality.
I'm very glad I found this gem.
A collection of short stories from various sources.......2006-11-12
This book is a collection of 25 short stories. They are simple but you can if you want read great depth in them. These stories would make good starters for a reading group or circle. They are professional but not extraordinary or unique.
"The year was 2081, and everyone was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal in every way."
I bought this book for one story in particular "Harrison Bergeron"; I bought the movie with Sean Astin and thought even if the story was fleshed out to be more like "This Perfect Day". So I thought it would be time to read the story. Unfortunately the short story can not hold a candle to the movie. It never really gets off the ground and comes to a curt conclusion never resolving the conflict.

Colors of the Mind.......2006-02-03
A good collection of short stories requires a vivid imagination and a wealth of various ideas, and Vonnegut shows off both of these traits in this anthology of his short works. He is truly a creator of worlds, capable of developing a colorful setting quickly and effectively in this brief format. As many of these works were written soon after the Red Scare, there are is an underlying theme involving cynicism towards structured society in general and communism specifically. However, this compilation is certainly a diverse blend of concepts - there is everything from a world in which the human mind has evolved to shed their physical manifestation to the creation of a device that produces a euphoric sensation. Vonnegut's tales and the characters found within are deep and meaningful as well, and there his wit manifests itself in every story to make each one enjoyable and distinct. One account tells about an actor who is shy, not really knowing what to say without a script, but who can completely become the characters he plays. A sense of irony can also often be found throughout this collection, with many things turning out different from what the society worked towards or from what we expect as readers. "Welcome to the Monkey House" is truly a multifaceted gem with much to offer; I wholeheartedly recommend to all readers as a joy to read, whether done in extended sittings or one story at a time.

Book Description
The events of that small-town summer forever alter David Hayden's view of his family: his self-effacing father, a sheriff who never wears his badge; his clear sighted mother; his uncle, a charming war hero and respected doctor; and the Hayden's lively, statuesque Sioux housekeeper, Marie Little Soldier, whose revelations are at the heart of the story. It is a tale of love and courage, of power abused, and of the terrible choice between family loyalty and justice.
Customer Reviews:
Loss of innocence . . ........2007-09-07
This short novel joins the ranks of a number of other fine books about adult dilemmas told from the point of view of a young protagonist. In this case, it is a 12-year-old boy whose father, the sheriff in a small Montana town, must make a moral choice that will either see justice done or allow the guilty party, a member of their family, to go free and unpunished. As I read this book, I was reminded of Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird." Both set in a bygone era in a small town, where the law is different for whites and non-whites, each story follows a similar course of action with rising tension and conflicts that leave a man standing alone, guided only by his own sense of the right thing to do.
Watson writes with a gentle hand, as in his other stories ("Justice" and "White Crosses"), and you come to care very much for his characters. He captures a time and place and the social life of people leading ordinary lives on a windswept prairie. It's also about a kind of loss of innocence, as the young narrator learns dark secrets about good and evil in an adult world he is about to enter himself.
An American Family Tragedy.......2007-06-16
This slim novel has just been republished, and for good reason. Beautifully, simply written, it's a uniquely American story of the West, exploring the sadder side of the fierce independence of the people who tamed the frontier. And it's a personal story of the clash between family ties and duty, told from a 12-year-old's point of view.
Young David's father Wesley is the town sheriff, his uncle Frank an athlete, war hero and doctor. David's childhood abruptly comes to an end as his father learns that his charming older brother has abused his trusted position as a physician and committed crimes against the Indians in the neighboring reservation. Wesley was once told that the secret of being an effective sheriff is to know when to speak and when to look away, but Wesley decides he can't look away this time. It seems he is the last to know of abuses the town has been aware of for a long time. David watches as his father tries to untangle the web of prejudices, family pressure and personal emotions his father finds himself caught up in. Has Frank learned his lesson as the scandal comes out into the open? Will an all-white jury convict based on the word of Indians? David comes to see the inequities he's never noticed, and puzzles over why so few Indians ever leave the reservation, have jobs, go to college.
Montana 1948 recreates a place that seems a throwback to an earlier time, but once you scratch the surface you realize that things like this do happen--now. David realizes for the first time that the Haydens occupy a place of privilege and power in their world, and power can corrupt. Although in no way political, the novel reminds us that the situation of Native Americans in our country remained desperate even after the civil rights movement. And the fierce independence of the "frontier" survives.
This is a lovely book, recreating a unique time and place but telling a timeless story. It's well worth your time.
Stunning story full of shocks and surprises...........2007-06-10
In the hands of the very skillful story teller, Larry Watson, this novel shines the light on the justice and morality of a small western town at a time when many people chose to look the other way at certain social injustices.
David Hayden narrates this stunning story as an adult recalling the events as he remembers them when he was twelve years old. His narrative is crisp with all of the openess and clarity characteristic of an observant young man, but seasoned with age,
He tells us at the beginning of the novel......"From the summer of my twelfth year I carry a series of images more vivid and lasting that any others of my boyhood and indelible beyond all attempts the years make to erase or fade them..."
And from there, we enter the town of Bentrock, Montana, where we are slowly and lucidly made aware of the horrific abuse of power taking place and are unable to look away from the unconsciable and abhorrent events that are unfolding.
It was both distressing and compelling to read such a heart-wrenching book that took place in the notorious lawlessness of the fabled 'Wild West'
Perhaps the legendary Old West might have, in reality, been a far more civilized and secure place than the America of today.
Justice in 'them good ole days' was often served up rather quickly and often with a sense of moral integrity.
Larry Watson very discerningly crafts a disturbing, yet touching story, a story that is at once both highly believable and shockingly unbelievable!
America loves it's heroes, it's prodigal sons, the godliness of it's doctors......those men of power that seem to be above reproach. Unfortunately, there are always 'bad apples' in the best of the bunch and we find one here.
In 1948, the Indian woman was not given a fair place in her society and was thus a easy victim for an abuser. Even today, more native Indian are raped than any of the other American ethnic groups. I found the following information on-line to be ghastly and abominable.......
"Colonizers have long tried to crush the spirit of the Indian peoples and blunt their will to resist colonization. One of the most devastating weapons of conquest has been sexual violence. In the eyes of colonizers, Indian bodies are inherently "dirty." White Californians of the 1860s called Native people "the dirtiest lot of human beings on earth." Violence done to "dirty" or "impure" bodies simply does not count"
As Montana 1948 unfolds and the truth becomes evident, justice seeks to prevail.
However, a few unexpected twists and turns at the end add a surprising punch to this very well written family and societal drama.
As Cormac McCarthy's Sheriff Bell in No Country for Old Men opines at the end of his book when a reporter questions him about how crime has gotten so out of hand.
Sheriff Bell responds......"It starts when you begin to overlook bad manners. Any time you quit hearin 'Sir and Mam' the end is pretty much in sight. I told her........you finally get into the sort of breakdown in mercantile ethics that leaves people settin around out in the desert dead in their vehicles and by then it's just too late."
Seems to me that Sheriff Hayden, like Sheriff Bell understood the changes that were taking place all too well with his final fervent remark as he slammed his hand down on the dinner table so hard that the plates and silverware jumped:
"Don't blame Montana." he thundered. " Don't ever blame Montana!"
Quality concise storytelling.......2007-02-22
I have just finished reading this novel for the second (maybe the third) time. I would happily read it again in the future.
This is a simple, evocative tale of a life-changing summer in the life of 12-year-old David. The narrator is David some forty-odd years on, looking back at that one summer, occasionally asking questions of it, but mainly just recounting. To describe much more of the story would be to spoil the story.
Larry Watson manages to keep the prose spare but amply descriptive. The story rides along at about the right pace, never too quick, never too slow. I disagree with someone's comments below that the reader loses all interest in both the story and the characters. It doesn't take long to read, so it's worth a risk.
fantastic read........2007-02-10
i loved this book. the story is a staightforward morality tale told in a prose that perfectly brings alive a distant time and place. for those who love being transported into the past by a book, into the lives of real people with complex psychologies that bring depth of character, I highly recommend this great american reading experience.
Book Description
“From the summer of my twelfth year I carry a series of images more vivid and lasting than any others of my boyhood and indelible beyond all attempts the years make to erase or fade them… “ So begins David Hayden’s story of what happened in Montana in 1948. The events of that cataclysmic summer permanently alter twelve-year-old David’s understanding of his family: his father, a small-town sheriff; his remarkably strong mother; David’s uncle Frank, a war hero and respected doctor; and the Haydens’ Sioux housekeeper, Marie Little Soldier, whose revelations turn the family’s life upside down as she relates how Frank has been molesting his female Indian patients. As their story unravels around David, he learns that truth is not what one believes it to be, that power is abused, and that sometimes one has to choose between family loyalty and justice.
