Ernest Gaines's novel, A Gathering of Old Men, is an excellent and inspiring story. Gaines did a great job at bringing his audience right into the action by his skillful use of description. Ernest could have, however, changed the surroundings more often. A huge portion of the book stayed in the same setting. Often, Gaines used predictable routines of the characters. These minor flaws can make the reader bored from the lack of change. The characters were easily predictable at times, but sometimes Gaines would throw in a few surprises. Ernest did an excellent job of making up for his mistakes by making his readers anticipate what will happen next, but unexpectedly, he changes the story into a whole new direction. Despite the small imperfections, overall, the novel was interesting and unique.

The book, A Gathering of Old Men is a unique description of a story about a white man who gets shot by a colored man. If you are interested in the civil rights act and segregation this is truely the book for you. The author used a complex perspective of different characters on the same story to express the different views of the plot. This book can get boring at times yet is in the end very interesting with the ironic twist. Overall I would recomend reading this book.

I thought this was an extremely good book, even though the beginning is a bit mundane. The only problem, is that it is about 200 pages, and it oly talks about 3/4 of a day, which can be extremely annoying if you like books that have extremely complex and . When you read the book, you will find it a bit boring, but if you just continue reading, the story develops and starts getting better and better becuase of the suspense. The book starts off with a boy named Snookum who is told by Candy, to get everyone to gather at Mathu's house. He runs off, telling everyone to do so, and the story starts to develop. Many things happen when the group of black men are together. A Cajun farmer named Beau is dead, and the local sheriff, Mapes, has to find out who. The only problem, is that almost everybody admitts that they killed the Cajun farmer. Mapes is puzzled, and listens to all of them to find that each have a good reason for shooting Beau. Half a day goes by, and he still can't find person who really shot Beau. Then, the man's son, starts a lynch mob against the group of blacks. It ends up with a tremendous fight and Mape finding who really was the person who killed Beau.

The book A GATHERING OF OLD MEN BY Ernis Gaines is very good but the beggining of the book is very hard to get into but once you keep reading you would like it.The book is in the 70s or late 60s.It was based in the south and the hate between whites and blacks was still in progress.Once you read the book you will fall in love with it.So to me this book really talks about the end of slavery but what was still goin on after it was suppose to be over.In the book a white man was killed and people automaticly assumed it was a black man.Well i liked the book and i think people should read it.

A Must-Have Classic!.......2006-09-10

Set in a rural area of Louisiana in the 1970s, this novel encompasses the anxiety-producing, the edge-of-your-seat, the heartwarming and the soul-stirring emotions that I've seldomly found in one book these days.

When the Cajun famer, Beau Bouton is found dead in an old black man's yard early in the story, you can rest assured that there's going to be trouble. This is when the local black community steps in to protect the accused, and prominently featured are 18 previously-downtrodden old men. These men, women and children gather together their courage to stand up to the town's redneck sheriff and local hillbillies. As you might imagine, this would not have been an easy thing to do even then, especially not without the fear of retaliation from the 'law.'

Candy, a white woman who was raised by both a white woman and the black man who stands accused of murder, is the one who helped to rally the troops within the black community and take a stand against injustice. She definitely has her moments when you might find it difficult to sympathize with her, but she seems to have a good heart.

You're also introduced to Chimley, Coot, Dirty Red and a host of characters who make this story very entertaining and almost impossible to put down.

Ernest Gaines is a true master storyteller because his books are lively and humorous, yet still give readers insight into living in the 'Old South'! Reading this book takes me back to the stories that I used to hear my parents and grandparents telling us about race relations here in the South. It may rile up my anger, but it also lays bare what has taken place and what still occurs to this day. The dialect is on point too, which I still hear spoken in some areas now.

Although it may seem like I have practically read the book to you with this longer-than-usual review, it's just the tip of the iceberg! I would highly recommend this book to anyone out there who is looking to add a definite classic to his or her library.

I read this book in my english class- I found it to be a very good book, easy read and very easy to understand. I learned life lessons from it, such as... Stand up for what you believe in, respect others prides and weaknesses, etc. This book is a great one to read especially if you like to read in one sitting. I thought that the way the author wrote it from different perspectives really captured the feelings and emotions held within the people of the story. This book will change the way you think about life- and if not maybe it will at least change how you thought about racial issues before now.

Ernest Gaines keeps the reader fascinated as he weaves a story about conditions in the deep South prior to the 1970's. Without a doubt, this novel compels the reader to not only understand the past lives of the old men, but to understand the need for change. The novel is deep and provocative as the plot unravels revealing secrets of many characters. Told from the first person point of view, all characters tell their story. Therefore,the chapters are told from a given characters point of view. Gaines masterfully weaves the speakers stories into a plot that touches the emotions, as well as the curiosity, of the reader. Using this novel in a high school literature class has been a rewarding experience for the students and the teachers. It is a novel that needs no constant reminder to read, for the reader is compelled to continue in order to understand the complexity of the lives of those characters telling their story. Plus, without revealing more, there is a catch to this novel which adds a piece of curiosity.

Timeless work on a futuristic society completely and utterly ignorant of any reality except their corporate jingles, giant TV's, and fake families. A look into a shallow desensitized self censored society where intellectuals are targeted as criminals, books are outlawed, and those who refuse to submit are tracked down by the mechanical hound.

Fahrenheit 451 is a frightening look inside of a corporate dystopian hell where there is no `We the People' just `we the market' and the State is omnipotent. Out on the fringes of the state's control remains a remnant of society, mostly hobos, who are dedicated to preserving the words that many will never read. A classic example when people stop thinking for themselves.

In the future, books are banned, and drugs and the good old electronic screen are used to keep the population docile and uninformed. Firemen don't put out fires here, they burn books when they are found, in a big macho showy way. One such bloke begins to have doubts about his occupation and society, and breaks away.

If you are interested at all in literature, I think this is a must-read. To me, it centers around the notion of censorship and how culture can seemingly determine the sense of happiness which can only really be derived from within. The characters and events seem futuristic in a sense but completely current. The writing style is not 'heavy', but the content certainly is. I believe this book is extremely well written and organized, and very applicable in a time when few people examine the substance underlying the superficial perceptions that are shaped by external forces.

I started reading Fahrenheit 451 for a summer reading assignment. As I kept reading I really got in to the book. Ray Bradbury did a great job describing the characters. The book is about a future world that gives you a glimpse of what our world would be like without books. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a book with some action and a great story.
