This volume celebrates the centennial of the 1899 publication of "Textura del sistema nervioso del hombre y de los vertebrados" by Santiago Ramón y Cajal, long considered a masterpiece of Spanish science and perhaps the most influential work in the history of neuroscience. One hundred years ago, Cajal postulated most of the modern neuroscientific ideas of today: the "doctrine of the neuron," the evolutionary origins of nervous systems, the general architecture of central nervous systems, the structure of the cortex, interneuronal circuits, neurotropism of growing axons, plasticity of neuronal contacts, and theories on the neuronal basis of consciousness. The scientific approach to consciousness has become a focal point for interdisciplinary dialog at the turn of the new millennium.

Contributors to this volume are leading figures in the field of modern neuroscience, plus an extraordinary group of polymaths, including Michael Arbib, Jean-Pierre Changeux, Gerald Edelman, Murray Gell-Mann, Stuart Hameroff, Francois Jacob, Eric Kandel, Rodolfo Llinas, Lynn Margulis, Harold Morowitz, Roger Penrose, Wolf Singer, and Lotfi Zadeh.

This is a fine and interesting collection, but as good as some contributions are, others are quite poor. The overview of neurosciences by Kandel is quite good, as are the papers on quantum consicousness by Penrose and Hameroff (although they do appear in every consicousness collection out there). Wolf Singer presents a strong approach to consicousness based on neuronal assemblies and synchronization. P.Stoerig presents THE review of the neuronal correlates of visual consicousness, using neuropsychology, single cell recording and imaging experiments to probe the contributions of visual cortex to phenomenal vision. The best paper in the book, i my opinion. Changeaux and DEhaene present their model for a neuronal global workspace, in my opinion one of the stronger consicousness models out there (see Dehaenes The congitive Neuroscience of Consicousness). Llinas presents his neuronal ocillation theory of thalamocortical interactions, and Arbib a very thought provoking approach to consicousness and language that uses as its starting point the action of mirror neurons.

Not all is solid in the contributions, as one can see from Edelmans re-printiong of a chapter of his 1992 book on consciousness. His more recent work is stronger. Other contributions add almost nothing to the debate, like 2 pagers by Jacob, Morowitz, and a very abstract paper on single celled organisms by Margulis. Gell-Mann offers interesting thoughts on emergence and makes a very good point and potential argument against quantum theories of consicousness like Hameroffs. IT simply points out that these depend on an interpretation of quantum mechanics thas is itself without proof.

Born in Calcutta in 1815, she married Charles Hay Cameron in 1865 and settled down to the quiet life of a typical Victorian colonial; but beneath this conventional exterior she harbored a growing interest in the new photographic technologies that would allow images to be reproduced and preserved in a permanent form. Shortly after her marriage she began a long and affectionate correspondence with Sir John Herschel, the world-renowned scientist, who kept her informed about new developments in photography. In 1863, Cameron emerged as the leading portrait photographer of the day. Her work was chronicled in the diaries of her niece, Virginia Woolf, and she produced a series of portraits of dis-tinguished Victorians, including Tennyson, Carlyle, and Darwin. This is a fascinating and meticulously researched biography of a remarkable female artist who was decades ahead of her time.

To this day, I believe

No one has quite captured the inner energy and ardour of her subjects .

This book is a welcome treat.

It is a biography that helpfully describes & entertainingly so

this peculiar era

born of restraint, but passion too.

That of the late 19th century.

This bio really lends a witty feel to these surroundings, not dull !

To all who might be dis wayed from Victorian culture

A collection of research papers (theory, methodology, applications and experiments), from a broad range of disciplines and countries, on the interaction between "Homo Economicus" and Nature. The study of a complex phenomenon like the interaction between "homo economicus" and Nature requires interdisciplinary research. The usual critical survey which concludes that not enough and sufficiently interdisciplinary research takes place does not go further than producing long essays full of wishes that interdisciplinary research were the rule rather than the exception. In this collection of research articles, we have working on this fascinating topic. We agree that all of us, interested in environmental issues should try to understand our colleagues from other disciplines, but rigorous research can only be undertaken by experts in one (or hopefully, more) fields. Philosophy, psychology, statistics, economics and management (not to mention politics and law) is too large a list of disciplines for anyone of us to be an expert in.
