    Book Description

Illustrating the many ways that structural engineers can bring their creativity and innovation to contribute to the design of the best buildings, this book presents the full value of the engineer in helping clients and architects achieve their goals.

The structural engineer's primary contribution to a project is clear - to ensure the building stands up and carries the loads to which it may be subjected. However, good engineers can bring so much more than this minimum. They add value to a project, enable it to function more effectively, reduce the risk of time and cost overruns, and enable architects greater opportunities for expression.

Addis presents a complete understanding of structure, by explaining the processes, variety of materials and philosophical issues involved, through over forty case studies. These examples illustrate why innovative engineers are now recognized as creators in their own right, able to explore the infinite ways of making and joining materials to create structure and form. It also proves their essential role as an integral member of the design team.

This text is useful to engineers in demonstrating how to apply a knowledge of materials and form to their clients needs, and useful for architects in knowing how to get the best from a structural engineer and realise their dreams.

    * Provides a resource for architects in understanding and making effective use of materials and structures
    * Encourages more architects to ask for more imaginative input from their structural engineers to inspire building designs
    * International case-studies reveal ways in which engineers can help develop architects' ideas

Pretty photos and decent directions demonstrate how to create dozens of different projects out of enamel, glass, pearl, ceramic, semiprecious, and other types of beads. From the basics of equipment and foundation techniques like threading, knotting, and finishing, to designing striking necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and brooches, A World of Beads takes the novice or intermediate beader through the fundamentals to an attractive finished product, with stops along the way to admire the beads of China, Europe, India, and Africa. --Amy Handy

5 out of 5 stars My style of bead book!.......2002-09-08

Of my several bead books, this is one of my favorites. The instructions are very clear, and the same techniques are used repeatedly for most of the jewelry pieces, for example, stringing the beads on thread, and using calottes to finish the ends. There are a few other techniques also, and I did pick up a few new ones for my own use, for example, how to work with leather thong in jewelry -- braiding it and finishing the ends with findings I hadn't used before.

But what makes me keep this book constantly on hand is its many pictures of jewelry, featuring mostly necklaces with a broad range of bead types. There are a lot of beautiful pieces for giving me ideas for bead combinations, color arrangements, and patterns. The earring section also has some very attractive and easy to make earring styles. Though published several years ago, these designs do not look outdated at all. I see that this book is not currently published and the sellers who have it are selling it at quite a high price, but it could very well be worth it for someone wanting to have a source of ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book full of inspirational designs.......2000-08-14

When I ordered this book, I was looking for something that would have lots of pictures of various kinds of beaded jewelry. I definately found what I was looking for in this book! It's got wonderful photos of designs the author has created, along with how-to instructions (nothing too difficult). Nearly every picture has helped get the creative ideas flowing! It also has a bit on the history of beads, plus a section on making your own beads. Good book for beginners and those wanting pictures for ideas!

4 out of 5 stars World of Beads.......2000-04-22

The dust jacket on this book is covered with luscious, rhythmical beaded jewelry that invites a look inside. The photography inside the book is just as exciting. There is no history of beads here, just a straight plunge into creating beautiful accessories.

Barbara starts by defining equipment needed, then quickly instructs on two basic techniques: necklace threading and earring making. It takes her only three pages to do it, demonstrating her absolute clarity of instructions.

Now the projects begin with a myriad of design options from which to choose. She winds up by introducing you to do-it-yourself beads, such as polymer clay, air-dry clay and papier-mache', using them effectively in some elegant designs. A helpful glossary and index are at the end.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book on beading techniques........1999-01-16

This is the first book I have come across which explains beading chains and making earrings so clearly. The instructions and diagrams are very simple and easy to follow. The book is filled with BEAUTIFUL designs created by the author. This book is great for beginners and for people wanting to know more about beads before they take it up as a hobby.

2 out of 5 stars 5 STAR BOOK FOR METAL JEWELRY MAKERS, 1 STAR FOR BEADERS OR BEGINNERS.......2006-01-27

I bought this book because other reviews say it is a good book for beginners. I totally disagree. By the description and the reviews on Amazon, I thought it was the most wonderful beginner book available. I think most novice jewelry makers would be totally exasperated trying to make heads or tails of this book. I have been making beaded bracelets, necklaces and earrings for a couple of years. I know how to make bracelets with and without clasps, with and without crimp beads and with elastic or other stringing materials. I am pretty much self taught by books, but I wanted to learn more. The reviews convinced me this book would be good for me and great for someone who is just deciding whether to try making jewelry or not. If you are one of these a real beginner, please don't buy this book, it will discourage you. The first five pages would scare many beginners away from even trying. The list of Tools, equipment and materials to make jewelry is enough to stop some people. Fortunately, I had made jewelry and knew many of these items would be nice to have but weren't a necessity. Almost all the book is about making metal jewelry. On the contents page such titles as annealing, mitering, moning, pickling, drilling, cutting and sawing etc., etc., etc., made me think of a middle school shop class, not a novice interested in starting to make simple jewelry. It would be a great book for anyone interested in making metal jewelry and learning a "trade" but for anyone just starting out or interested in making beaded jewelry, don't buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Creative and Informative.......2006-01-05

When I came across this book I was surprised and impressed with the quality of both the design and the information that it contained. I took an intro to jewelry class at our local college, and have found that this book has more information and a better presentation than the class offered.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone getting started in the jewelry field, or who has trouble mastering certain techniques. It helped to show me things that my professor overlooked or shortcutted.
      Well worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Practical book with great projects!.......2005-06-15

I bought this book based on good reviews I read about it and I am not disappointed. The language is precise, the projects and techniques are explained well, the designs are appealing in their own right or can be altered to include your ideas, the price is right, and the idea of splitting the pages to individually show techniques and projects falls under the category of "why didn't anyone think of that before?" - all in all a great book that I will use often!

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!.......2003-10-15

This book is really cool, it's great because it's really easy to understand. I'd reccomend it to any young inspiring artist interested in jewelry making! Great for beginners OR people that have had some experience in jewelry making.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, but..........2006-05-12

The author started with a great idea of finding inspiration in old paintings. The jewels are far from being perfect copies but their imperfection gives them an appealing style.

However, since this is a how-to book, it should at least introduce the polymer clay to the beginners. The author reduced the subject into a single paragraph. You have to guess where to obtain most of the material; don't look for a list of suppliers, there is none. This "je m'en fous" attitude may work for the French but the English-speaking reader expects a more thorough approach to details.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2006-04-26

This book is just beautiful. Its an inspiration.I love the way they explain the lessons..and I can change them as I like with no problem.using my own inspiration. Its a all skills level book.on just doing that.Im ever so glad I was able to find it and get it.Its just a treasure.B.W.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous!!!.......2005-02-15

This book is a must have for those who like to have some inspiration for jewelry that's just a touch different from the trendy stuff you see all around. It's not available in Dutch unfortunately, but I still bought it and haven't regretted it for a single moment. I've had it ever since it came out and I've used it as a source of inspiration lots of times already. I use it for making pendants especially...and the result is always super!!!
The fun thing about it, is that the artist was inspired by art and when I'm in a museum nowadays, I often find myself looking closely at painted jewelry.
This book shows how you can make wonderful and stylish jewelry of very cheap materials. Also, the techniques used are not as difficult or as painstaking as many other polymer clay techniques like making canes for instance. It's a matter of preparing your clay, shaping it in combination with stones, glass, shells...etc...adding some colour with metal powders, baking, cooling, (painting), polishing, varnishing and attaching some findings...Ready!!! You can have a splendid result in one afternoon's work!

      5 out of 5 stars An Inspirational How-To Book!.......2003-05-12

I just completed two projects in this book and the pieces turned out beautifully! This is my first foray into the polymer clay medium and I can't wait to create more pieces.

I do not understand some of the previous reviewers' comments about the pieces being unsophisticated etc.... these are reproductions of ANTIQUE pieces which, by definition, didn't use modern "sleeker" methods of metallurgy etc... One reviewer also mentioned that painting with the model paints is a problem. Not so! My only conclusion is that the author of that review didn't try the techniques or didn't follow the directions for painting. The "Testor" brand paints I used worked great.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in recreating antique pieces. The projects are easy, fun, and a springboard to use one's own creativity.

3 out of 5 stars Good for inspiration, but lacking in honor.......2002-11-27

As a beginning jeweler who has worked with polymer clay in the past, I was quite excited to read this book. Though it inspired me to create some new pieces, I found the projects offered to be a complete disgrace to the original artists.

        Book Description

Stewart, Tabori & Chang is proud to reissue the popular Abrams title Creating Your Own Antique Jewelry. A dream come true for crafters, Creating Your Own Jewelry combines the hobby of jewelry-making with the history of art by showing readers how to use polymer clay to replicate jewels featured in museum masterpieces. Drawing inspiration from antiquities that date as far back as the seventh century b.c., the thirty-five projects include a brooch based on the one worn by Isabella Brandt in Peter Paul Rubens's famous portrait of her, a bracelet depicted in Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's painting of Madame Moitessier, and a ninth-century talisman buried with the body of the emperor Charlemagne. Necklaces, earrings, pendants-the priceless originals may be far out of reach, but with a few supplies and a free afternoon anyone can fashion their very own copies.

Each project features a color photo of the polymer version alongside the artwork that inspired it. Step-by-step illustrated instructions explain how to make the piece in just a few hours using common household tools like tweezers and widely available craft materials like semiprecious stones. Part museum tour, part how-to manual, each project in the book begins with a brief overview of the artwork-so that later, when someone asks about an intriguing pin, the crafter can be ready with a fascinating answer.

2 out of 5 stars Good and not so good...........2007-09-18

Working and teaching in Mixed Media, I purchase books that look like they will assist and appeal to my students. On the surface and definitely the front cover! this looked like a good fit. However, the projects in my opinion on the front cover were the best. There are some lovely enamelling projects, not to hard for beginners-intermediate. These are definitely more geared to the traditional jewellery maker.

The book for me then spiralled downwards.Projects that would suit school kids, or first time crafters is the best way I can describe them. Paper rolled around a straw for Paper jewelry - done to death (see the Art of Paper Jewelry for real creativity ). Polymer projects that whilst photographed well left little to the imagination - again, done a zillion times over in any polymer book.

This book is best for total beginners in the entry to the craft area, teachers working with children etc. Had I been able to look through this book before purchasing, I doubt I would have got it.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best I've found.......2005-08-13

I have been making jewlery as a hobby for 20 years. This book was inspiring, offering a broad spectrum of earring types with excellent pictures and instructions for each. I rate it highly for the variety of styles & clarity of instructions - good for beginner or a veteran!

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone.......2002-09-02

As the author states: this is a book for "earring addicts". A little prior knowledge on how to use jewelry tools for forming and attaching loops to the earring wires may be necessary because these basic skills aren't well-explained. The instructions rely mostly on step-by-step explanations, and a photo of the finished piece, rather than diagrams.

I like this book because I have gotten lots of good ideas from it. In particular I like the section showing several designs for coiled wire and bead earrings. I'm also interested in some made with seed beads woven together in interesting designs, including a dangling birdhouse. Not having prior experience with weaving beads, the instructions may be a little difficult to follow, but I still am willing to try. Fortunately, these woven designs do have diagrams.

There are instructions for making earrings from all kinds of materials, including polymer clay, fused fabric that has a mosaic look, sheet metal formed into interesting shapes, gourds, and many other materials. Some of these materials require tools beyond traditional jewelry tools to work with, such as a jigsaw, metal file, and sewing machine. Although I think a few of the designs have a tacky out-dated look, the majority look quite boutiquish. For crafty earring lovers, there should be at least a few pieces here to inspire.

        2 out of 5 stars Skip It.......2002-06-02

There's nothing in this book (in terms of technique) that can't be found elsewhere, and the examples are singularly uninspired.

Now available in paperback, Lauren Greenfield's acclaimed Fast Forward is a powerful look at Los Angeles youth culture and its influence on the rest of our society. From the affluent children of the Westside to the graffiti gangs and party crews of East LA, young Angelenos reckon with an overwhelming barrage of advertising and entertainment images emphasizing money, possessions, and eternal youth. This collection of 79 color photographs, accompanied by interviews with the children and their parents, reveals the realities of growing up fast in a culture that is at once irresistible and unforgiving. A compelling precursor to Greenfield's widely praised Girl Culture, Fast Forward is a telling document of the direction in which today's ultra image-conscious culture is pointed.

A 13-year-old girl works out at the track with her personal trainer. Two 17-year-olds caress their newborn. A 7-year-old pauses on the red carpet outside the Shrine Auditorium on her way into the Academy Awards ceremony. A 16-year-old lifts his shirt to reveal a hairless chest wreathed in tattoos. These are but a few of the provocative images that fill the pages of Fast Forward, a collection of portraits capturing children from East L.A. to Bel-Air. Many of these photos are accompanied by the kids' own words about their lives and the world around them, often revealing a wisdom beyond their years and a naiveness--a failure to understand the values in which they are immersed. What emerges from these images and words is an alluring, if at times disturbing, portrait of a generation perhaps too quick to leave its innocence behind.

                Book Description

Photographer Lauren Greenfield capures often shocking, always startling images of children at school, at play, or at home in the precocious city of Los Angeles. The stunning color photographs range from the children of the gang culture of South Central and East L.A. to the affluent, often show-business world of the Westside. Underlying is the overwhelming importance of image and celebrity, with its materialistic trappings of fast cars and expensive clothes. 80 full-color photos.

5 out of 5 stars I am in the book.......1998-07-17

The book was brillant. It showed every aspect of living in LA. The articles and reviews that surrounded the book after it's publisihng were off base. Lauren should be Proud of herself.

4 out of 5 stars A comment from one of those kids.......1997-08-03

Well if you open this book you'll see my friends and classmates . . . Although I wonder why the pictures in this book are considerably older than the copyright date, this book does and excellent job of profiling the kids of LA in the early nineties not 1997. California experienced quite an economic uproar since since those Bar Mitzah days! Also, I wonder why this book is entitled "Growing Up in the Shadow of Hollywood." As one of those "shadowed" youths ( I attended the Harvard-Westlake School whose prom clad students appear in the beginning of the book), I can assure you that Hollywood is neither the mainstay of the Beverly Hills culture nor is it the mainstay of the South Central culture, both which are depicted in this book. Nevertheless, this book creates a realistic picture of life in 90210, 90077, and the all the other 90000's . .

4 out of 5 stars Beverly Hills 90201 meets Village of the Damned.......1997-07-23

The only thing scarier than some of the pictures in this chronicle of teenage LA, is knowing that it's only the tip of the iceberg. From the rich brats to the gangsters and their wannabe imitations, Greenfield does a great job of capturing the shallow lives of these kids. Almost Jacob Riis-like in its literal illumination of the subject
