    Book Description

Contemporary Architecture and the Digital Design Process introduces the reader to new developments in the computer modelling of design form in contemporary architectural practice through a series of detailed case studies. The book illustrates how evolving design practices use and exploit the potential of new computing technologies in a wide range of areas and application.

A central thesis of this book is that technology follows design demand, rather than design adjusting to available new technology. Designers are not merely passive recipients of prescribed computing tools and techniques. Instead, they are increasingly able to express their intuitive design ideas through the rational medium of computing.
The book features several contemporary building projects, each of which introduces a range of CAD and computing issues based upon the work of creative architectural and engineering design practices. These include the offices of Frank O. Gehry, Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, Anthony Hunt Associates, Peter Hubner, Szyskowitz-Kowalski, and Faulkner Brown. All these examples show what architects need to know and the skills they need to acquire to use advanced CAD technology.

    * Develop your CAD skills and learn to apply your creative imaginations fully to your designs
    * Learn about the principles of design practice and gain a sound knowledge of CAD technology
    * Increase your CAD abilities and learn to use it as an essential tool in expressing your ideas

But even in their grief, their devoted work on the tombs of the Pharaoh continues under the leadership of a heroic new Master. 4 out of 5 stars Christian Jacq ends this series with a great book.......2002-06-06

I have enjoyed the Stone of Light books for many years now and am sad to see this series come to an end. However, I think that the Place of Truth was a wonderful end to this great series.

Christian Jacq had created a great mystery in the past tree books. I picked up each book and read it with eagerness trying to figure out who the traitor was inside the brotherhood. Well this time he keeps you waiting until almost the last page, keeping the suspense there right up until the end.

This book has all of the things that I look for in a Christian Jacq book, good character interaction, so action, and a great story.

All in all this was a fitting end to a great series of books. I would highly recommend reading this entire series.

4 out of 5 stars This is Ok.......2002-01-24

I've read the book. It's good but not as good as the great Ramses series.

          4 out of 5 stars my review.......2002-01-03

In this final chapter of the series the whole story unfolds and we are able to find out who are the enemies and the true benefactors of the Place of Truth.

I really enjoyed reading this last book and the author always keeps the pace and the reader's interest. The characters are as alive as the first book and the whole description of everyday life and mysteries on ancient egypt are very vivid.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Ending.......2001-11-13

This is the last book of the section 'the stone of light'. The author had done a good job that he had made a excellent ending. It is unexpectable ! But if you just read this book but not the other 3 books of the section, you might not understand it easily.

5 out of 5 stars wont let you down.......2001-10-05

Im a younge passionate Christian Jacq fan who fell in love with the people of Ancient Egypt many years ago, and Im always on the look out for a decent Egyptian novel.
Upon reading the first pages of the 'Stone of Light' series I could not stop.
Throughout these four amazing novels Christian Jacq developes the plot, one of mystery and suspense. The characters each have their own place in the Palace of Truth and Christian Jacq developes upon these characters until you feel you know them personally.
This book is truely a great read for anyone who wants a trip back in time to learn about the ancient craftsman from Deir-El Medina or 'The Palace of Thruth'.

2 out of 5 stars The Stone of Light: The Wise Woman - Mediocre reading.......2002-04-06

For the Egyptophile, The Stone of Light: The Wise Woman is a disappointment and is lackluster in comparision to other volumes. The story line focuses mainly on the sacred Stone of Light, the forbidden village & the Brotherhood. These craftsmen & artists create the great monuments of ancient Egypt. This in itself could be a fascinating story, but it doesn't pan out.
The Wise Woman is one of the central figures, however, there is little emphasis put on her in the book as well. At best it could have been good reading but was uneventful.

          5 out of 5 stars Fine.......2001-11-09

This is one of the best fictions I have ever read. The author of this book, Christian Jacq, is famous because of the great fction that he wrote about Ramses the second. This time's story occur at the late Ramses period. There is a Stone of Light which is hide in the worker's village in Deir-el Medina. Many people think that the stone is very valueable and try to steal it. This story tells about hoe the workers protect the stone. If you are interested, go and get it fast! You will enjoy it very much!

5 out of 5 stars The Stone of Light: The Wise Woman.......2001-01-17

I have just finished this terrific book. Where is the next one? Again, Christian Jacq has bought to life Nefer, Ubekhet, Paneb, Mehy & the others. It is exciting watching Paneb develope into the man he has. Ubekhet is so gentle, but very, very strong, seeing her character evolve is wonderful, & Nefer, the silent one, leading the others to great heights. Thank you Christian Jacq for sharing this wonderful world of Egypt with us. Please continue writing & sharing this great ancient nation.

          4 out of 5 stars my review.......2000-11-10

In this sequel, Ramses has died and he has been replaced by his son, Meneptah. After some uncertainty as to the future of the Place of Truth, work starts on the new tomb and palace for the new Pharaoh.

However, the same evil persons who have tried to bring down the Place of Truth are still hard at work. Some are even rising in the politic structure of the country.

In this sequel, the author has kept the same interesting characters and adding some new ones. The writing is very well done and keeps the reader interested and at the same time informed of how living and tradition were kept in those times.

The interest born with the first book is rekindled in this second book, and I am looking forward to the third!

5 out of 5 stars Egyptian Historical Soap Opera !.......2000-10-18

I did the audiobook of this and loved it, just as I loved the first one; Nefer The Silent. It "feels" like I'm really involved in actual lives and events in this period of history. Death, betrayal, majestic works, plots and counter-plots, enemies on the borders..oooohhh you got to love this. The names get to you after a while. Nefer The Silent, Paneb The Ardent, Gau The Nose, etc. Mix in the period historical lessons along with the detailed descriptions and events of daily lives and the magnificent scope of the story and this is one barn-burner of a novel. The time flew by when I was driving and I can't wait for the next one to see what happens to this large cast of characters.

          Book Description

Adorning the temples, palaces, and monuments of the Nile River Valley, their inscrutable gazes look out across the millennia, bearing witness to the rise and fall of long-lost dynasties-just as they have witnessed the endless rise and fall of the sun. Timeless treasures of light and shadow, they are the sculpted stones of ancient Egypt. In this gorgeous book of images, photographer Hervé Champollion portrays these ancient stones in natural light, forming a breathtaking pictorial history of one of the world's most fascinating ancient civilizations.

Virtually all that is known of pharaonic times-from military campaigns to religious ceremonies to the everyday life of civilians-comes from these stones, which are captured by Champollion's lens in a range of settings, from the glowing red of sunrise, to the hard white light of midday, to the golden rays of sunset. Informative captions by noted scholar Diane Sarofim Harlé enhance the images and help us to appreciate the grandeur of these "stones of light," which through the ages have beckoned visitors to come face-to-face with the divine.

I, being an avid Egyptophile, own dozens of illustrated volumes on the subject of Egyptian art and architecture. But this book, Egypt, Stones of Light, is truly the best among them. Never before has the sublime and elegant stone of Egypt been displayed in such a gorgeous format, in their natural light. Diane Sarofim Harle's scholarly captions are very insightful and accurate, and compliment the images greatly. Everything about this book, the captions, the elegant photography, the accompanying text and descriptions, even the index, is done with great care and perfection. I cannot think of one negative comment that could possibly made about this wonderful volume. I particularly like how the photographer, Herve Champollion, tends to zoom in to charming and breathtaking details of the statues and reliefs, rather than taking generic photos of the whole work of art as most photographers do. Also the photographs showing the symbology of the columns and statues are quite exquisite. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys beautiful ancient art and astounding architecture. Bravo! Flipping through the dark, glossy pages of this volume, one can easily get lost, dreaming of Egypt.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another great book from Jacq.......2006-01-08

I've read the Ramses series a few years ago and thought I'd pick up a copy of this even though some reviewers say it's not as good. Well, I enjoyed reading it just as much as the Ramses. The short chapters make it easy to read even if one doesn't have hours to read at a time. However, it's one of those books that was really hard for me to put down even at 3am after reading for several hours... you know, just one more chapter... :) I've always found the history of ancient Egypt fascinating and though it's a fiction novel one can learn a great deal about what it was like living in the time of the pharaohs. Oh, and the story is not over yet, can't wait to read the rest of the series!

2 out of 5 stars Nefer the Silent.......2005-10-05

The novel is historical fiction but it is a very simplistic and predictable plot. the reader does glean quite a lot of information about the government, customs and politics of the Egyptians. The ending is awful, never solving the basic mystery that continued through the whole story!
It is on a 5-6 grade level of reading but the subject matter is much more adult than that.

4 out of 5 stars Based on some facts, boring to amazing.......2003-09-19

I love this novel, although compare to the Ramese series and the Black Pharaoh, this one is not as excited.

The novel vividly describes the living of the tomb makers. You may be surprised when you find out that even a very little episode happened in the novel may be a historical fact (you can know more by reading the book "The live of the Pharaoh Tomb Builders" by John Romer). In the beginning I thought the novel is based on Jacq's own imagination, but later I have found out that the Place of Truth does exist in Egypt (Del Medina). You can even find out the pictures of the village from the Internet and discover that the description of Jacq in the novel is exactly the same as what you can see in them. The five gates, the houses, and the tombs of the Master, are very details in Jacq's description. The living of the villagers, the murder of Nefer, the leading of Paneb, the Key of Dream of Khen the Scribe of the Tomb, and the existence of theWise woman, they are all based on facts.

Book 1 is quite boring, the others are better. This novel covers the period from Ramese II to Ramese III! People who are familiar with Egyptian history may know that after Ramese II, the power of Egypt declined until the reign of Ramese III, which belonged to another dynasty. Jacq did not reveal his name at first, only mentioned "the son of Sehknet". But he is able to reveal the ability of this son of Sehknet. People familiar with Egyptian history will know that he is of course no one but Ramese III.

The strength of Jacq is that he is able to gather the scattered facts of Egyptian history, together with his own imagination, and weave a story. From his novel, you can read Egyptian history, not scattered monuments, tablets, and inscriptions, but a continuous novel.

The weak of Jacq, however, is that his view of Egypt is somehow biased. In his eye, Egypt is a paradise. The Pharaohs are always justice. They love his own people, his country, reigning according to Ma'at, which I believe is not always true.

          3 out of 5 stars Somewhat simplistic.......2003-07-28

Christian Jacq's latest novel is technically very punchy in style, sacrificing scene development for action. His characterisations also seem to follow the same pattern. In 'The Stone of Light' opener, we see several contrasting characters, most of which are not as simple and forthright as Paneb the Ardent, yet still come across as sketches rather than blooded characters. Perhaps the later installments of The Stone of Light will add more flesh to their sparse bones.
After the Ramses series, Jacq once more plunges us into his version of Eygptian history, this time taking us to West Thebes, to the secret village known as the Place of Truth where rigorously selected craftsmen who have see the `Way' work on the tombs and edifices within the Valley of the Kings. It is fairly near the end of Ramses reign and he has a walk-on part, purely to emphasize the importance of the Place of Truth as we are more concerned with the `giant' sixteen year old Ardent (whose all consuming desire is to become an artist, but both his birth and circumstance preclude entry) and his peer, Silent, (who was born to the village but is currently wandering Egypt in search of his own personal light). Silent's wandering through Thebes neatly allows Jacq to ensure that the two meet and, after saving Silent's life, gives Ardent the necessary means to approach the village. Silent also meets and elopes with Ubekhet (destined to become a priestess, along with Ardent's future wife, Uabet, and mistress, Turquoise - interesting name as it originates in 14th century old French).
Most of the action surrounding these characters is taken with Ardent's somewhat Herculean efforts to prove himself along every step of the regimented way to gaining entry to the village. Jacq overemphasizes his tenacity, simplicity, efficiency and effectiveness all of which would be a trifle too good to be true save he is affected by an arrogance born of sheer over-confidence. Nevertheless, he surmounts all tasks and is admitted to the village to become Paneb the Ardent, in the same manner that Silent becomes Nefer the Silent.
The real story that runs through is the use of Mehy, an ambitious man (whom we see committing a murder in the opening scenes) who marries, murders, cheats and lies his way up through the highest echelons of Pharaonic Thebes. His desire to destroy the Place of Truth (no real reason is actually given) eventually gives way to an attempt to murder Ramses which fails (though time eventually achieves his aim) through Ardent's preceptivity. With his equally secretly ambitious wife, Serketa, they spend most this opener gleaning information, setting up a network of spies and establishing themselves. However, at no point do the youg artisans ever come into direct contact with the scheming Mehy, only through the medium of the Place of Truth's security commander, Sobek (who provides some levity throughout).
This opening novel (of four) is a refreshing read, similar in style to Rameses and moves along at a nice pace. It is usually the mark of a good book that you can get to the end and be entertained, yet realise that nothing really happened throughout as it seems to setup the remaining novels. If you like the Rameses series then The Stone of Light should be just as enjoyable.

1 out of 5 stars I can't believe this was all I had for travel reading!.......2003-07-04

I must say that I enjoyed the Ramses series before I launch into this wholehearted criticism, so that everyone understands that I am capable of appreciating this man's work. The Ramses series was hardly a challenge to read, but the descriptions were so vivid that I was almost able to smell and feel the scenes as they took place on the page. I picked up this book looking for a similar experience-- an interesting travel book. How wrong I was.

As said by other reviewers, the characters are one-dimensional and vapid. The villain might as well be a cartoon character-- he is so poorly put forth that Jacq has to have him say to himself, "They won't get away with this..." It's almost like Gargamel planning to punish the Smurfs. Maybe I am harsher than I have to be because I had just finished reading The Fountainhead when I started this book-- and depth is something that comes in a downpour in The Fountainhead. Anyway, I thought that this could perhaps be a good children's book, but Jacq talks quite a bit about rape and sex, which is a little inappropriate for a child of six or seven. And trust me, the sentence structure and content is too elementary for anyone much older than that. So it's useless to all people, big and small. I was stuck reading the whole thing because I was in Spain with no other unread books...I kept lamenting to my companion that I was reading the world's worst book, but I saw it through to the end. I won't be wasting money on a sequel.

Long story short, buy this book under no circumstances.

4 out of 5 stars Ancient Egypt Again.......2001-10-02

Christian Jacq, a French author read here in translation, is finishing his second series on Ancient Egypt. The first quintet about the Pharaoh Ramses is absolutely compelling and the second, a quartet about the year following Ramses' death, is almost as grand. This is the third in that second series. What is generally missing in this second deries is a grand central figure; instead we have a brotherhood responsible for the building of the tombs of the pharaohs. But central to both is the landscape--real and figurative--of ancient Egypt. I find the ongoing glimpse of everyday life fascinating and convincing. The books could have been written by a Michener--there is much history contained but all within the confines of a compelling plot. The Place of Truth--the community of the aforementioned brotherhood--is under attack by malign forces wishing to seize power in the vaccuum following Ramses' death. The heroes are several of the leaders of that brotherhood. The sad twist at the very end sets up a potentially fabulous final volume. The series needs to be read in order-and preferably following the Ramses books--but it is easy and a delightful to digest.

              4 out of 5 stars A HUMANISTIC-THEOCRATIC EPIC.......2001-05-07

Following fast on the heels of "Nefer the Silent" and "The Wise Woman", this third instalment in Jacq's "Stone of Light" quartet keeps up the suspense and intrigue and involves most of the same characters. One can tell that he is an accredited Egyptologist by the knowledgeable details and fascinating insights he imparts in his telling of how royal and aristocratic tombs were labouriously hewn out of rock, how they were prepared for painting and decorating, and the incredible skill and artistry that went into these "homes for eternity". The author also gives enthralling medicinal insights (especially the special role of honey in healing) and information about what the ordinary Egyptian ate, drank, wore, thought. He has really cloaked himself with the time and place of pharaonic Egypt and has a cliff-hanging narrative to tell at the same time. I can hardly wait for the final chapter of this epic and sincerely hope that the author has plans for another series of novels as well-written and as erudite as the "Ramses" series and this "Stone of Light" series."Paneb the Ardent" has conniving temptresses, lusty tomb-painters, impotent pharaohs, a mystery villain, high intrigue, low comedy, arcane ritual, and grand epic. It is satisfying to see all the dry academic material that many of us have plodded through for years come to life in such an entertaining and elegantly-written way. His novels far surpass those of Pauline Gedge whose narrative skills are sometimes plodding and unconvincing. I suppose you have to really study the culture in an advanced way before you can craft tales from it. I look forward to re-reading all of Christian Jacq's novels some few years hence and trust they will be as "page-turning" then as they are now. All Egyptological readers deserve to treat themselvs to these convincing dramas of an era far behind in the mists of time but ever-present in human pan-consciousness for some inscrutable and mysterious reason.Tim Wingate from Ottawa, CANADA

              5 out of 5 stars my review.......2001-03-30

In this volume of the series, the Master of the Place of Truth trains and initiates Paneb in the mysteries of the Brotherhood. Paneb grows into a master in his own right and becomes the leader of one of the two crews. At the same time, Egypt is undergoing major changes due to the differences between Seti II and his son Amenmessu. All this upheavals also affect the Place of Truth.

The enemy of this sacred place tries to take advantage of the difficulties and destroy it but the protection of the goddess always wins.

This book is so full of wonderful descriptions, it makes you live and actually feel the people, the places, the serenity of the sacred valley.

Once again the author brings to life the way people lived in those days and how profound was their beliefs in their gods and their influence in everyday life.

Wonderful book and a real joy to read.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent work in this great series.......2001-03-03

A secret community of artisans and their families living in the mythical Place of Truth design and build the royal tombs of the pharaohs. Life and death meet here to create special artistic designs that eventually become the resting-places of Egypt's rulers. The magical Stone of Light can turn anything into gold and make matter translucent. It is place of harmony, but one member of the community has allied himself with the group's enemy, General Mehy.

This traitor and the General plot to steal the Stone of Light and destroy the village. With Seth II about to be ordained pharaoh unless his own son's challenge defeats him, the timing is perfect to devastate the Place of Truth. General Mehy plays father against son planning to become the first Egyptian ruler in many years to rule without the Place of Truth on his side in victory.

The third volume in this fascinating ancient historical fiction series brings back all the key characters we either root for or against from the previous epic tales. Christian Jacq provides his usual visual and colorful story that makes an ancient civilization seem alive. Readers see a political intrigue thriller wrapped inside the golden age of Egypt and that leaves the audience appreciating an author who enhances a powerful plot with interesting details of a once thriving culture.

                    Book Description

Talk to anyone who went to Catholic grade school and you'll quickly learn that it had a tremendous influence on who they are and what they believe. The process of becoming a leader forces all of us to draw on our past, whether we grew up going to Catholic school or playing basketball in Indiana. The rules, values, and boundaries you learned early on in school and at home affect how you react in another similar structure, in this case, the workplace.

Through a combination of humor and self-examination, this book helps you explore the impact your early experiences had and continue to have on you. The style and appeal of this book is fun, whimsical, and serious all at the same time, and the messages are squarely rooted in a leadership development process based on learning and behavioral change models.
