    Book Description

Topology is becoming increasingly important in chemistry because of its rapidly growing number of applications. Here, its many uses are reviewed and the authors anticipate what future developments might bring. This work shows how significant new insights can be gained by representing molecular species as topological structures known as topographs. The text explores carbon structures, establishing how the stability of fullerene species can be accounted for and also predicting which fullerenes will be most stable. It is pointed out that molecular topology, rather than molecular geometry, characterizes molecular shape and various tools for shape characterization are described. Several of the fascinating ideas that arise from regarding topology as a unifying principle in chemical bonding theory are discussed, and in particular, the novel concept of the molecular topoid is shown to have numerous uses. The topological description of polymers is examined and the reader is gently guided through the realms o

      Book Description

This is the first ever European-wide overview of biodiversity in alpine areas. The volume draws together taxonomic, ecological, historical, functional and climatic studies to develop a holistic understanding of biodiversity at and above the treeline. The main themes are: plant, vegetation and animal diversity, altitude gradients and spatial patterns, long-term changes and the effects of herbivores on diversity. These themes are introduced by a geo-biological scene setting and by a novel characterisation of alpine bio-climate. The comparisons of current and long-term observations and data emphasise the historical tradition of alpine biodiversity research in Europe. Analyses of taxonomic and assembly data at the continent-wide scale provide insight into pattern and its historical and ecological causes.

"Disgusting as he usually was," Hunter Thompson writes in this, his 1959 novel, "on rare occasions he showed flashes of a stagnant intelligence. But his brain was so rotted with drink and dissolute living that whenever he put it to work it behaved like an old engine that had gone haywire from being dipped in lard." Surprise! Thompson isn't writing about himself, but one of the other, older, aimlessly carousing newspapermen in Puerto Rico, a guy called Moberg whose chief achievement is the ability to find his car after a night's drinking because it stinks so much. (I can smell it for blocks, he boasts.) The autobiographical hero, Paul Kemp, is 30, trapped in a dead-end job (Thompson wound up writing for a bowling magazine), and feeling as if his big-time writer dreams, soaked in Fitzgerald and Hemingway, are evaporating as rapidly as the rum in his fist.

In fact, Thompson was only 22 when he wrote The Rum Diary, but his fear of winding up like Moberg was well founded. What saved him was the fantastic conflagration of the 1960s, a fiery wind on which the reptilian wings of his prose style could catch and soar to the cackling heights of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Puerto Rico in 1959 doesn't have bad craziness enough to offer Thompson--just a routine drunken-reporter stomping by local cops and a riot over Kemp's friend's temptress girlfriend, a scantily imagined Smith College alumna who likes to strip nude on beaches and in nightclubs to taunt men.

Thompson's prose style only intermittently takes tentative flight--compare the stomping scenes in this book with his breakthrough, Hell's Angels--but it's interesting to see him so nakedly reveal his sensitive innards, before the celebrated clownish carapace grew in. It's also interesting to see how he improved this full version of the novel from the more raw (and racist) excerpts found in the 1990 collection Songs of the Doomed (available on audiocassette, partly narrated by Thompson). --Tim Appelo

        Book Description

Begun in 1959 by a then-twenty-two-year-old Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary is a brilliantly tangled love story of jealousy, treachery and violent alcoholic lust in the Caribbean boomtown that was San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the late 1950s. Exuberant and mad, youthful and energetic, The Rum Diary is an outrageous, drunken romp in the spirit of Thompson's bestselling Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Hell's Angels.

5 out of 5 stars The Rum Diary.......2007-09-24

Thompson's best work for beginners as well as a favorite for seasoned fans. Written more like a screenplay than any of his other works, The Rum Diary takes you on the journey of a degenerate journalist's time as a sports writer for an English rag in San Juan. From the interesting characters to the usual Thompson antics this book will not disappoint. The length lends itself to consumption of an afternoon, so if you are easily engulfed with storylines make sure you have the time. This is one of the most heavily used books in my Thompson collection as it is a great story that never seems to grow old. I can't wait to see what happens when the movie starts filming.

5 out of 5 stars Best book ever.......2007-08-14

This is honestly the most enjoyable book I've ever read. Hunter S. Thompson is absolutely brilliant. You would have no idea that this was his first novel. I kept having to limit what I read in a day so that I could read it longer. I would recommend this book to anyone (and have!)

          Book Description

Bernice L. McFadden, whom the novelist Adriana Trigiani calls “a master storyteller,” has crafted a touching novel about a young woman uncovering a surprising family history.

Her spectacular debut novel, Sugar, established Bernice L. McFadden as a writer to watch in African-American literary fiction. In Nowhere Is a Place, she spins a fully realized and memorable portrait of a young woman on a journey of self-discovery.

Sherry has struggled all her life to understand who she is, where she comes from, and, most importantly, why her mother slapped her cheek one summer afternoon. The incident has haunted Sherry, and it causes her to dig into her family's past. Like many family histories, it is fractured and stubbornly reluctant to reveal its secrets; but Sherry is determined to know the full story. In just a few days' time her extended family will gather for a reunion, and Sherry sets off across the country with her mother, Dumpling, to join them. What Sherry and Dumpling find on their trip is far more important than a scenic site here and there— it is the assorted pieces of their family's past. Pulled together, they reveal a history of amazing survival and abundant joy.

Praise for the novels of Bernice L. McFadden:

          Terry McMillian on Sugar
“One of the most compelling and thought-provoking novels I've read in years.”

Toni Morrison on The Warmest December
“Riveting . . . I am as impressed by its structural strength as by the searing and expertly imagined scenes.”

People magazine on This Bitter Earth
“McFadden's sensuous prose and folk wisdom conjure a memorable character with complexity and grace.”

          4 out of 5 stars Family Ties.......2007-09-30

The members of this family tree locates the beginning of their roots remembering their ancestors being born of slaves and Indian decent.

Very well detailed and graphic in content about the perils of slavery, agony, defeat, triumph, incest and betrayal.

The story is parallel to the author's previous novel "SUGAR" but with a much different twist. The novel is narrated from the 20th century; reflections by Dumpling & her daughter, Sherry, as they travel by SUV from Nevada to Georgia; whereas "SUGAR" & "THIS BITTER EARTH" is written from an earlier century, from Sugar's point of view. (Both excellent books.)

The only drawback I had about this story is the undertone reference to voodoo. Other than that, the story was well written.

          5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2007-05-08

Yes, I am declaring this book a masterpiece. Although a work of fiction, this story rings true for many African Americans whose roots in America began in the South. The relationship between the central characters Dumpling and her daughter Sherry, are paralleled via a book that Sherry is writing about her ancestors. McFadden's book cuts back and forth between the central storyline and the story within the story, subsequently blending the two together for an ending that leaves one filled with joy and loss at the same time. After reading this book, I was nothing but grateful to my ancestors as it was their existence as harsh as it may have been that made my life possible. I am encouraging anyone who may have a past they need to reconcile, or are seeking answers and inspiration for the future to read this book. The foundation of who I am, just got a little bit firmer.

4 out of 5 stars Nowhere Is A Long Trip..........2006-12-07

"Nowhere Is A Place" is a novel about a long road trip between a mother and daughter that unfolds the family tree with triumphant stories through generations and generations. I love Bernice McFadden's novels but I did have issues with, Sherry, the daughter, in this story. I didn't quite get why she was so thorny towards her mother, Dumpling. I enjoyed this novel and will always be a devoted reader of Ms. McFadden's books but this one did venture over into the heady tales of Toni Morrison...post "The Bluest Eye." You read it - judge for yourself! Overall, interesting read that has climatic tells of survival, secrets, love and a family's past. Another good book for Bernice McFadden!

          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-11-13

Bernice McFadden is a talented writer whose stories stick with you. I read this one on cd in my car and the reader was amazing, she brought to life these incredible characters with her brilliant rendition. While I've loved all of Ms. McFadden's books, this one felt really special because of the audio. I always felt sad when I arrived at my destination and had to continue listening to the book later. The language and writing style drew me into the story and even though a lot of terrible and unbelievable things happened to these survivors of slavery, the story felt real and true the whole way through.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyed The Journey!.......2006-09-08

McFadden has become one of my favorite writers. I believe I've read all of her novels and can't say a bad thing about any of them. A great read here. I didn't even figure out who Dumpling was until the end.

          5 out of 5 stars A fascinating book about a fantastic place........2002-08-13

This book is about Patagonia, the southern part of South America. Windswept, cool, rainy or dry, depending on one's location, Patagonia is the uttermost realm of the Earth. This book, out of many, is the best I have ever seen on the area.

The writers, Paul Theroux, and the late Bruce Chatwin, are both very well acquainted with the region, Each writer has a differing style, and each writer's commentary therefore varies. Yet, both harmoniously intertwine into a fascinating mesh. In addition to each capturing the essence of the land and the harsh climate in his own way, both writers present fascinating vignettes on Patagonian history, culture, and people.

You will learn about the origin of Patagonia's name, its role in Shakespeare's plays, its history of sheltering Welsh nationalism, its ground sloth fossils, Butch Cassidy staying in hiding there, its glaciers and fiords, etc., etc., etc.

All of this is superbly complimented by Fred Hirschmann's stunning color photography. In four-color format, these photographs form the most excellent composite for a book since Eliot Porter's masterpiece on the lost Glen Canyon. Again and again, I return to these photos for their inspiration and beauty.

Most of us will never visit Patagonia and taste the local calafate berry. But if we can't, this book is the next best thing. I prize this book very much and recommend it to the hilt.

            Book Description

It is the spring of 1815, and eleven-year-old Remembrance "Mem" Nye is leaving the comforts of her farm in Hartland, Connecticut, to settle in the wilderness of western New York. Lured by the promise of a better life in the Genesee Country, Mem and her family set off in a covered wagon. Here is the story of Mem's unforgettable journey as she becomes separated from her family and then, after being reunited, almost loses them in a flood. The book illustrates the hardships of travel in the early pioneer days, when the wilderness was more thickly populated with bears, wolves, and mountain lions than with human beings. As Mem helps her family establish a foothold in the new land, she learns the importance of community and strong family connections. One of Bank Street College of Education's Best Children's Books of the Year

If your in 3-6th grade and like historical fiction you will love this book! It tells about the journey of a girl named "mem" and her family as they travel to Genese county in covered wagon. It's a great book with tons of twists that will keep you reading. If you like this then i highly suggest you read the seguel, "Frozen Summer"

4 out of 5 stars great, except for..........2004-06-15

Please see other reviews for details, but they miss one thing that may be important to some readers. The author has done a masterful job of showing how people used to live and think, except somewhere along the line, their religion disappeared. It is my impression that religion was pretty important to most colonial era people, but you would never know it from this book.

In the book The Forgotten Door a boy named little Jon drops into the forgotten door accidentally. He got a bruise and lost his memory after falling through the forgotten door. He wants to get back to his house but he can¡¦t. As he was running from an alien, a family took a shotgun and killed it to protect him. The family that helps him heals his bruise. They find out that Jon can read minds. After that, he discovers that he and the family are in danger. He must get to the door fast enough so; they don¡¦t have to stay in the forgotten door world forever. My favorite part is when they went through danger with aliens and other monsters attacking. Toward the end they obtain the passage to the door. Then Jon returns to his family. Along with him comes the family he meets from the forgotten world.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorites.......2003-11-15

I first read this book years back when I was in elementary school, and to this day, as a college student, I still have my copy. In fact, I recently bought the other two books in the trilogy "Frozen Summer" and "Journey Back Home", because I was so fond of the storyline. Mary Jane Auch does a great job in keeping you interested in Rememberance "Mem" Nye's problems, and how she resolves them, and after looking at the Author's notes at the end, you know you're reading something historically accurate because she went out of her way to do her research. After reading the trilogy, (after wishing there was more to read about Mem) I thought, "wow I can't believe people lived like that 200 years ago.." Overall, a great book, although I must confess it would appeal more to young girls than boys.

5 out of 5 stars this was an awsome book!.......2003-05-02

I recommend this book to 4th and 5th graders especially. This
book is very exciting once you start reading it you won't want to stop! There is a lot of adventure and sometimes-freaky parts in Journey to Nowhere. As `Mem' the main character, falls off her family's wagon and travels farther and farther into the woods I guarantee you won't want to stop reading this book!

                Book Description

Amina has lived for most of her life with a foster family who took her in when she came to the country as a refugee, and was separated from her mother. The story opens when she is driven to run away from her foster home after a terrible argument with her foster brother. Taking refuge in a deserted house, she meets up with Paul, an older boy who is squatting there, and who takes her under his wing. The story follows Paul's attempts to help Amina find out the truth about her real mother, and become reconciled with her foster mother. This is combined with a fast-moving plot, as the squatters try to escape eviction, and to avoid the unwelcome attention of those opposed to asylum seekers. Throughout all this, the story is infused with a warm sense of the importance of story and of song.
