Best Nonlinear Optics of Materials Book.......2001-06-17
The book's description of how to do nonlinear optical experiments is outstanding. I have never seen a book that explains how measurements are done and how one can relate measurements to susceptibilities. These kinds of details are never described in journal articles and can usually be found only in hard-to-find Ph.D. dissertations. Many of the chapters are written by the experts that invented the measurement techniques being discussed, so this book gives you an inside track. The first three chapters very nicely present the theory that is used in the rest of the book. Given that each chapter is written by a different group of people, the book fits together nicely. This is the one book I would choose to take to a desert island because it has all the basics. A must buy for anyone interested in the cutting edge of materials nonlinear optics.
This book has everything about nonlinear optics of Materials.......2001-06-13
This book is one of the best resources I've seen. Nonlinear optical properties are tabulated and experimental techniques are described. Chapter 3 is an extremely useful treatment of the relationship between molecular and bulk properties and includes lots of stuff that's never been published anywhere else. I use it as a reference all the time. The book is pricey but worth every penny.

Concordances matter.......2005-10-09
Great ideas matter. When Newton published Principia, in 1686, not twenty men in Europe knew enough mathematics to understand it; yet by the middle of the eighteenth century ordinary people everywhere were eager to learn something about what was called the Newtonian philosophy. Men gave lectures on the subject and published books. Ordinary people talked about Newton for the same reason that in our time they talk about Darwin. The name Darwin stands for a new idea of the world and man's place in it. These ideas were opposed to the prevailing belief that men were naturally disposed to evil, so that, if allowed to think and act without restraint, they would follow evil courses and accept wrong ideas. According to Newtonian philosophy, it seemed as if God had said to humankind: "I have designed the world according to a rational plan; and I have given you a rational mind, capable of understanding that plan. That is all I can do, and you must make the best of it. By following reason and experience you may in time lean all about the universe and its laws and so in the end solve all your difficulties." (Becker, Carl L. 1958 Modern History: The Rise of a Democratic, Scientific, and Industrialized Civilization page 186 Morristown NJ: Silver Burdett Co.).
Now to the subject of concordances, they matter less than before due to the ability to download The Descent of Man from Project Gutenberg and search for a literal. Concordance has value in giving one a grasp on how many times a literal occurs and in what context. I still use the Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, and I will keep A Concordance to Darwin's The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex right next to it.
Book Description
Cancer Ward examines the relationship of a group of people in the cancer ward of a provincial Soviet hospital in 1955, two years after Stalin's death. We see them under normal circumstances, and also reexamined at the eleventh hour of illness. Together they represent a remarkable cross-section of contemporary Russian characters and attitudes. The experiences of the central character, Oleg Kostoglotov, closely reflect the author's own: Solzhenitsyn himself became a patient in a cancer ward in the mid-1950s, on his release from a labor camp, and later recovered. Translated by Nicholas Bethell and David Burg.

Required reading.......2007-07-26
The media would like us to forget how wrong they were about the Soviet Union for 70 years. Stalin and his ilk were not agrarian reformers or overly enthusiastic New Dealers. They set up the most brutal political system in human history. Or maybe they were just overly enthusiastic New Dealers after all. Solzhenitsyn shows us what life was really like for those we helped condemn to live under that system, especially in Eastern Europe after the sell-out of Yalta. In this and in First Circle and Ivan Denisovich, he doesn't speculate like Orwell in 1984, he just tells it like he saw it. Consequently, he would never win a Nobel Prize today, not anti-American enough.
The dismally depressing lives of Soviets suffering from malignant neoplasms two years after the death of Stalin........2007-04-26
What could be more depressing than a group of people living in an austere Soviet structure in 1955, discussing their dismal lives as denouncers, soldiers, labor camp workers and exiles under Stalin's policies? All of the aforementioned set in the confines of a dreary cancer ward. The conversations, thoughts, and actions involve a dozen or so patients undergoing treatment and the hospital staff providing it. Solzhenitsyn, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, survivor of cancer and of eight years in a labor camp, is a master writer, but this grim novel about life in a cancer ward can best be described by...any word synonymous with "depressing." The patients' ponderings on their diagnoses, treatments, and prognoses, as well as of their former lives "on the outside" are covered extensively. Preferable reads: The Gulag Archipelago by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Kolyma Tales by Varlam Shalamov, and Journey into the Whirlwind by Eugenia Semyonovna Ginzburg.
May be the best book I've ever read.......2006-03-23
I know that sounds like hyperbole, but seriously. He's just so very good at capturing a very wide variety of characters. It starts out like "Things Fall Apart" or "Palace Walk" as a portrait of an unlikable man. But it very quickly morphs into something much more complex and amazing as he widens the scope again and again to incorporate every one of the people in the Cancer Ward. Truly it's hard to speak about exactly what he's doing. But as a friend of mine said, even with that Nobel Prize, he's still underrated.
What Russian literaute ought to be.......2006-02-26
In a letter to the Fourth Congress of Soviet Writers Solzhenitsyn writes, "Lierature that is not the breath of contemporary society, that dares not transmit the pains and fears of that society, that does not warn in time against threatening moral and social dangers - such literature does not deserve the name of literature; it is only a façade." Cancer Ward is no façade.
A truly moving story of life and death, disease and recovery, Cancer Ward is a novel with impact. The characters are brilliantly portrayed and it is they who tell the story. From loyal party member Pavel Nikolayevich to labor camp survivor Oleg Kostoglotov and through all the characters whose lives fit somewhere in between, the virtues and faults of socialism are examined, dissected, and layed out clearly for the reader.
While his contemporaries were busy writing safe novels, novels which towed the party line and supported the prescribed views of Stalinism, Solzhenitsyn took a grave risk. He wrote novels which reflected truth. He wrote novels which portrayed the real life trials of the people. And, in the end, he wrote novels which were not published in the nation he so dearly loved.
Make no mistake. Alexander Solzhenitsyn was no rebel. He truly loved his country and supported his government. His use of brutally honest literature was meant to strengthen his beloved country. It was Solzhenitsyn's hope that by portraying the weaknesses of his country he might help eliminate some of those problems. Alas, his works were largely ignored due to the unrelenting censorship of the Soviet government.
Fortunately for the rest of the world his works were not lost. They found their way out of Russia and onto the stage of World Literature. For this we can all be thankful. Cancer Ward is an enriching novel and a worthy addition to anyone's library.
This is not a book you want to pass up
brilliant, life affirming!.......2005-11-20
Contrary to what might be assumed from the title this book is life affirming, particularly in the form of the main protagonist, Oleg Kostoglotov. If you want to be informed about the state of Russia in the immediate post-Stalin era or want to read a superbly written indictment of collectivism, or simply want a good old fashioned love story - this is for you! Has to be one of the top one hundred novels ever written.

Product Description
Here's the Bright Side is a wise, moving, and funny book about what people gain from situations of loss. Using examples from her own life and from other people's lives, Rollin inspires readers with stories that illustrate the value that can come from the hardest times in our lives and how the worst can lead to the best, resulting in happier, more powerful, richer ways of living. Rollin writes both of lessons learned and happiness gained: about men, friends, power, and more. Rollin tells us about fair-and foul-weather friends, the usefulness of fear, the positive outcomes of failure, divorce, and widowhood and her own evolving joy as a cancer survivor. Poignant, timely, and universal, Here's the Bright Side is a unique and inspirational view of how life is often enriched by loss and how people find surprising light in darkness.

Optimistic, enjoyful.......2007-09-24
It's the optimistic side of life. It's not a story. They are experiences that everyone may has live or may will live. But, they are the bright side of them!
Very good.
Okay, but I think there is a better way.......2007-08-17
If you have run into some tough luck and you have nothing else to turn to but this book, then I'm glad it is here for you. This book is fine for what it sets out to do, but I think it is better to live so you know you will ride out tough times. Betty Rollin said, "I woke up one morning and realized I was happy. This struck me as weird." I'm glad things worked out for Betty Rollin, but I don't want to be surprised I'm happy. I recommend Achieve Lasting Happiness to be happy without being surprised by it. I'm not only happier, but more at peace, calmer.
thought provoking.......2007-05-20
good reading for anyone.......excellant snippets to keep in mind when going through life's trials and tribulations.
Engaging and meaningful! A perfect gift........2007-05-07
If you have a friend who is struggling through an illness or a challenge of any kind, this book is bound to help. It is an honest and informed presentation of the bright side of these "bum raps".
This lovely book is the latest creation by a woman who has always spoken intimately about things few people discuss. In the supposedly liberated seventies, people whispered the word "cancer" and few even mentioned breast cancer. By writing the intimate and informative First, You Cry, she changed the way we discussed this killer of women. She also spoke about her mother's death in Last Wish, once again breaking barriers by writing about end of life choices. In Here's The Bright Side, she explores post-traumatic growth and shares the latest findings on how we are stronger and, yes, happier after life's bum raps, as she calls them. And, being a journalist, she backs up her insights with studies on post-traumatic growth and other facet of suffering few discuss.
This book is sure to make you smile and look at your life with joy in your heart.
And, for everyone who reads this and thinks...oh, she must be a friend of the author. Ms. Rollin and I only share and upcoming interview. And we both find ourselves happier and somehow grateful for the bum raps we are surviving.

Book Description
A team of expert authors from the medical and allied health communities describe recent advances in the management of head and neck cancer through a greater understanding of cancer cell growth and mechanisms, as well as the expansion of rehabilitation strategies across the allied health profession.
In addition to introducing new information, the book covers both the theoretical and clinical knowledge from an international perspective to support basic training of therapists in practice as well as graduate students, all illuminated with case examples--from swallowing disorders, through non-surgical voice restoration, to rehabilitation following total laryngeal surgery--on an accompanying CD ROM.
As the first book in recent years to cover both current theory and clinical practice, this will prove an essential textbook and practical clinical reference for the head and neck cancer rehabilitation team.

Book Description
In 1985 the media announced a new therapy for cancer. It was expensive, labor-intensive, and toxic--but, they said, it worked. How it worked is the story Ilana Löwy tells in Between Bench and Bedside, a compelling account of the clinical trials of interleukin-2 at a major French cancer hospital. Her book offers a remarkable insider's view of the culture of clinical experimentation in oncology--and of how this culture affects the development of new treatments for cancer.
Löwy, a historian of science who trained as an immunologist, makes the life of the laboratory and the hospital comprehensible and immediate. Before immersing us in the clinical drama, she fills in the history behind the action--a background of chemotherapy and radiation, controlled clinical trials, and the long line of immunological approaches that finally led to interleukin-2. The story then shifts to the introduction of interleukin-2 in a cancer ward. Löwy conveys the clinical investigation as a complex, multilayered phenomenon that defies the stereotypes of modern biomedicine. In this picture, the miracle-makers and arrogant, self-centered professionals of myth give way to moving images of real people negotiating the tensions between institutional and professional constraints, the search for a scientific breakthrough, and the obligation to alleviate the suffering of a patient. The result is a rare firsthand look at the multiple factors that shape real-life clinical experiments and the institutional tangle and emotional muddle that surround such trials--an invaluable view at a time when medicine is undergoing such great and confusing changes.

Book Description
This volume analyses corporate insolvency law as a coherent whole, stemming from common fundamental principles and amenable to being justified or criticised on that basis. The author explains why consistency of principle must be sought and how it might be found in the relevant statutory and case law. He then constructs an egalitarian theory for the analysis of corporate insolvency law, based on the premise that all the parties affected by this law are to be treated as equals. He argues that this theory can reconcile the dictates of fairness with the demands of economic efficiency. The theory is employed to analyse some of the most important aspects of insolvency law. Why should the individualistic method of enforcing claims against solvent companies give way to a collective method during insolvency? Why are there different formal mechanisms for dealing with troubled companies? What role does the pari passu principle play in the distribution of an insolvent company s assets? The controversial issues of whether and when secured creditors should be accorded priority over others receive detailed consideration. The functional role of the floating charge and its relationship with receivership are also analysed in this context. The many questions relating to the operation of the new administration procedure introduced by the Enterprise Act 2002 are considered in the light of principle. The book also analyses the role of the wrongful trading provisions. It examines, finally, why insolvency law objects to certain transactions at an undervalue and those having a preferential effect. This volume aims to enhance understanding of this important branch of the law, and to suggest principled solutions to problems which have not yet received judicial attention.
