A LATER CLASSIC FROM AMERICA'S PREMIER FICTION WRITER

First published in 1970, nine years after Hemingway's death, this is the story of an artist and adventurer -- a man much like Hemingway himself. Beginning in the 1930s, Islands in the Stream follows the fortunes of Thomas Hudson, from his experiences as a painter on the Gulf Stream island of Bimini through his antisubmarine activities off the coast of Cuba during World War II. Hemingway is at his mature best in this beguiling tale.

The book came on time, was in good condition and was thoroughly enjoyable to read.

4 out of 5 stars Life ala Hemingway.......2007-08-09

Typical quintessential Hemmingway, but not his best. That designation still belongs to "The Old Man and the Sea."

This book, as all Hemingway books, is about dark, somber, sometimes drunken times. Men being men, and for the most part, having trouble with women...usually lots of women.

"Islands in the Stream" might be considered three short novellas about the life of Thomas Hudson, painter, adventurer, soldier and sometimes womanizer. Each of the three parts is an "island" in the stream of Thomas Hudson's life.

Hudson had three sons, and how he did love those sons. In the first part of the book, the story of how one of them, David, fought and fought a big fish is similar to The Old Man and the Sea. Rather than being about age and experience, this story is about youth and rite of passage from boyhood to manhood, what the boy learns about himself while fighting the fish, and how beautifully and artfully his father and his friend let the boy navigate that rite of passage. This one part alone makes reading the book worthwhile.

It is a book that will linger, especially Hudson and his sons, and most especially the effort to land that big fish.

5 out of 5 stars Islands in the Stream .......2007-06-05

Hemingway at his best: humor, tragedy, loss, love, honor, death, all taking place on and around the islands he loved so much. Provides insight into the author's life at the Finca in Cuba, his love of cats in particular, and fuels suspicions of his involvement with an anti-U-boat campaign in Caribbean waters during World War II. An excellent, enjoyable, escapist read.

            5 out of 5 stars A Favorite.......2007-05-09

This novel seems the most personal of all Hemingway's writings. It is pensive and blunt yet ultimately is a poignant retrospective of ones' passage through life. Well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Hemingway.......2007-04-16

Hemingway's last novel, published several years after his death, is a story in three parts. Not surprisingly, the main character, Thomas Hudson, seems to be very Hemingway-like. In the first part of the book, Hudson is a painter enjoying a leisurely, rustic lifestyle on the island of Bimini as war clouds gather in Europe. The story moves on to an extended drinking bout in a Havana bar in the second part of the story. Some of the conversation in this segment is amusing, insightful, and memorable. Some of it is depressing, but all of it is likely to hold the reader's interest. For my money, it's the third part that makes this novel so compelling. "At Sea" is the story of Hudson's grim hunt to confront a German u-boat crew that has come ashore in Cuba after their boat has been sunk. In somewhat predicatble fashion, Hemingway serves up a large portion of tragedy and angst in this section. But it is a gripping tale, and one that I found myself drawn to at every available opportunity, several times postponing my dinner until 8 or 9 p.m. as I picked it up immediately upon arriving home from work.

            Book Description

When Ernest Hemingway committed suicide in 1961 he left four unfinished works--A Moveable Feast, Islands in the Stream, The Garden of Eden, and an untitled work on his travels in Africa. The edited versions that have come down to readers and scholars of Hemingway appear as distinct, disjointed texts that fit oddly into his oeuvre. Through extensive literary detective work Burwell has uncovered substantial evidence that Hemingway in fact designed the three published works as a trilogy, what she terms "his own Portrait of the Artist."

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking Study.......2005-09-28

This is the only in-depth scholarly work extant on the mass of unfinished books Hemingway left behind in 1961. Besides that, it is fluidly written, thoroughly documented, thoughtfully analyzed, and excellent in all respects.

It matters not whether or not the thesis -- that the posthumous works constitute a loose unified work -- holds up. To state it and explore it, as the author does, is to cast a lot of light on the very complex issue of Hemingway's last works and their difficult manuscripts. No one had even gone as far as to lay the groundwork for such a question before Burwell. Indeed it was doubtless necessary to proceed on some sort of hypothesis to go through these widely divergent manuscripts chronologically, as the author does, and to then present a coherent text of her own regarding her studies.

The author also has a great openness and sympathy for Hemingway and his tortured, insistent aestheticism. It shines through the entire work and raises it to a very rare level in modern literary criticism.

            Book Description

A complete new guide--the first of its kind--to the best fly-fishing in the streams, lakes, and ponds of southern New England. Within the confines of southern New England there are more trout streams, rivers, lakes, and ponds than any one angler can fully appreciate in a lifetime. The variety of waters in itself is quite astonishing, as is their fertility and ability to sustain trout year-round. This variety and fertility belies the conventional wisdom--namely, that southern New England contains only marginal trout waters, and that they are overcrowded and overfished. It is, in fact, a fly-fisher's delight, with well-protected watersheds, stocked rivers, and stretches of pristine, wild streams. No matter where you stand in southern New England, Tom Fuller can guarantee that you are within 15 miles of one of the exceptional trout waters described in his new book. He guides anglers to every recommended trout water--over 130 streams and rivers in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island--making this the most comprehensive guide available. In addition, you'll find thorough, expertly researched access directions and up-to-date information on regulations and stream conditions. Nineteen maps detail the major rivers; and Fuller also gives advice on patterns to match the hatches and a chart showing insect emergence dates. The only trout-fishing guide to this region, it covers 19 major watersheds with over 130 waters described.

3 out of 5 stars OK book, but very vague information.......2007-06-27

Book is OK, but it does not give enough specific information about trout fishing locations. It will mention rivers or ponds, but does not tell you how to get to them or where there is parking available to access them.

            5 out of 5 stars Quite Pleased.......2003-12-12

I was quite pleased with this book. I live in New York State and wanted to expand my fishing into Southern and Western Connecticut. Using the "high level maps" I was quickly able to determine some other areas to fish besides the Housatonic and the Farmington River. More importantly, I caught some fish on my first day out after reading this book. (I must have been lucky as I have returned twice to the same spot with no bites). The guide gives useful written directions and made it easier for me to determine what streams and rivers I would want to fish.

5 out of 5 stars This is how a fishing guidebook should be!.......2003-04-10

Excellent book! Not only does the author spell out, in complete detail, the best trout streams in Southern New England, he provides basic maps of all the areas mentioned as well as a list of the feeder streams as alternatives to the main rivers he discusses, if you want to have a better chance of not running into anyone else while on the water. In most cases, he also includes a listing of essential flies (including sizes) that you should have if you want to catch the fish. I've planned several day-trips using this book alone and have absolutely no complaints. All the info he provides is clear & accurate. If you live in MA, CT, or RI and love to flyfish, GET THIS BOOK! You won't be sorry you did.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific guide for fly fishing in Southern New England........2000-02-04

In Trout Streams Of Southern New England, native New Englander and experienced angler Tom Fuller presents a trout fisherman's guide to the streams, rivers, lakes and ponds in southern New England with all of their variety and fertility sustaining trout year-round. Trout Streams Of Southern New England features 27 maps of the major watersheds, complete access directions, up-to-date information on regulations and stream conditions, recommended patterns to match the hatches, hatch charts and fly recipes. Trout Streams Of Southern New England is informative, practical, and a terrific guide for fly fishing day trips, weekends, or extended vacations.

I love this book.. It is one of the few in my collection that I make sure I get back when I lend it.

Mr. Hall's love of fly fishing is evident in every page. It is easy to read and very down to earth. It is written with feeling and warmth and makes you want to drop everything and go to Scotland. It even makes me consider fishing in the winter, and I HATE COLD.

This book is one of the few I have found that conveys a fly fisherman's love for the sport and his surroundings so well. Mr. Hall is engaging and down-to-earth, not snotty, elitist, or condecending (which is hard to find in the sport of fly fishing today).

I have read it at least six times and keep it handy for the next. It is never far from my reach or mind.

With the forms in this book and the on-line links it gave me for local rules and forms, I filed by myself and saved $1100. I had no problem representing myself in court, because I knew my case, I typed it!
