Drawing from decades of work, travel, and research in Russia, Robert Alexander re-creates the tragic, perennially fascinating story of the final days of Nicholas and Alexandra as seen through the eyes of the Romanovs' young kitchen boy, Leonka. Now an ancient Russian immigrant, Leonka claims to be the last living witness to the Romanovs' brutal murders and sets down the dark secrets of his past with the imperial family. Does he hold the key to the many questions surrounding the family's murder? Historically vivid and compelling, The Kitchen Boy is also a touching portrait of a loving family that was in many ways similar, yet so different, from any other.
Drawing from decades of work, travel, and research in Russia, Robert Alexander re-creates the tragic, perennially fascinating story of the final days of Russian monarchs Nicholas and Alexandra as seen through the eyes of the Romanov's young kitchen boy, Leonka.
Download Description
"Taut with suspense and rich in historical detail, The Kitchen Boy chronicles in an entirely new light the brutal slaying of Czar Nicholas II and his family It was a crime to horrify, fascinate, and mystify the ages. On the night of July 16, 1918, Bolshevik revolutionaries murdered the entire Russian royal family in a hail of gunfire. No one survived who might bear witness to what really happened on that mysterious and bloody night. Or so it was thought. In masterful historical detail and breathtaking suspense, Robert Alexander carries the reader through the entire heartrending story as told through the eyes of a real but forgotten witness, the kitchen boy. Narrated by the sole witness to the basement execution, The Kitchen Boy is historical fiction at its best. But more than that, the accessible style and intricately woven plot-with a stunning revelation at its end-will keep readers guessing throughout. "This is a dream of a book... [Robert Alexander's] tough, stylish prose is the perfect medium for this fast-becoming myth of evil and innocence, of frailty and courage, of betrayal and redemption."" -Judith Guest ""Through the power of the author's imagination, we see not only the tragedy of the Emperor, but that of a human being, man, and father."" -Ivan Artsyshevsky, The Romanov Family Association"

The Kitchen Boy.......2007-09-12
The author kept you interested all the way through the book and even though you already know the outcome, you are hoping for a better ending. Great read by Robert Alexander. I am now going to read Rasputin's Daughter by Robert Alexander.
Couldn't put it down.......2007-08-29
Coincidentally, the day I started this book there was a news announcement that the graves of the missing Romanov children had possibly been discovered. I should have known that it was a good omen! I had been looking for a novel about the Romanovs for some time and this hit the mark. THE KITCHEN BOY is a wonderful mix of fact and fiction and a valuable history lesson, too. Mr. Alexander did an outstanding job of turning turbulent times and a tragic event into an entertaining novel that I couldn't put down. So believable that I had to convince myself that the fictional mystery ending really didn't happen - or did it? Simply wonderful!
Great Travel Read.......2007-07-09
I bought this book in the Hermitage Museum shop in '05. It's great for a short travel book. Filled with history, plus a good mystery mixed in.
Romantic fantasy but decent reading.......2007-07-05
Knowing little about Russian history, it was interesting to me that R.Alexander was able to weave certified history into his romantic fantasy of a novel. I felt pushed to learn more about Russian history, but not to repeat reading this novel or other books by R. Alexander, I am sorry to say. This book was reviewed by a small book group that I belong to. The ladies all felt the same way about the novel. On the whole, looking at subjects that came to us when reading the book, we were astonished at the sheer waste of money on Romanov jewels and the terrible waste of millions of lives. Also, once again, we were sad that Russia has never managed to be anything but an autocratic society, whether the Tsars or the Communists rule. We hope for better government of that large land of such wonderful potential.
That Night in Yekaterinburg.......2007-07-04
Over the years, many books, both fiction and non-fiction, have been written about the events of July 16-17, 1918. On that date, in the town of Yekaterinburg, the Russian royal family met their fateful end.
Misha Semyonov is an elderly Russian man who is living in the suburbs of Chicago's north side. Nearing the end of his own life, he begins to record a tape for his granddaughter, Kate, detailing what he knows about the Romanov family. Misha, it turns out, was the kitchen boy in the House of Special Purpose in Yekaterinburg. He served the last tsar and his family, and through his recounting of the events leading up to their death, he paints a detailed picture of the last days of Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, and their five children.
But the story doesn't end there. The innocent kitchen boy's account of the night's events explains the disappearance of two of the Romanov bodies (those of tsarevich Alexei and his sister, Maria), as well as what happened to the bodies of the family. But along the way, Misha covers his own tracks, and it is only through Kate's investigating skills that his big secret is revealed.
Robert Alexander does an excellent job painting the anxiety and uncertainty of those last few weeks in Yekaterinburg. The novel is vivid, with many Russian phrases (and their English translations), notes that can be found in the Russian Archives, and the picture of a loving family confused by their sudden change in circumstances.
To be honest, the novel reads a bit like "The Diary of Anne Frank," though not quite as candid. However, it is an excellent theory into the murders that ended Russian imperialism and changed the face of the world forever.

Isn't His Best.......2007-10-02
This is not a good first book to read of John Sandford. I would recommend another one and then go back to this one. I'm glad I didn't read this first but it was still o.k. Better than some I've read.
Complicated plot with satisfying action leads to great second Davenport adventure.......2007-09-06
Following after Rules of Prey (Lucas Davenport Mysteries), "Shadow Prey" gives us a complex problem to mull over while providing all the action and suspense we could hope for. Murders are taking place - not only in Minneapolis - where the victim's throat is cut and the suspect is Native American. The reader is given the chance to know why these murders are being committed - and the reasoning is strangely compelling, leading one to almost sympathize with the instigators - as well as following the trail with the police. Davenport is often frustrated, as his normal contacts do not include very many Native Americans, and to make things worse, after a near miss he begins to exhibit signs of going through a severe depressive episode, or at the very least post-traumatic stress disorder. As the police follow the trail, bodies begin to pile up and Davenport worries that time is running out for the big finale, whatever that may be. I don't wish to give any more information about the plot than this, so as to avoid spoiling it for anyone. Do yourself a favor and give this wonderful series a chance!
This is my second time reading through the Lucas Davenport mysteries, and they do not disappoint the second time around. I heartily recommend these to anyone who likes a good thriller, police procedural or action-oriented mystery.
One of the best.......2007-08-21
I think this is an excellent follow-up to "Rules of Prey" and one of the best of the "Prey" series. I like it for a variety of reasones. In addition to being a solid police, crime thriller, it sheds some light on the Native American issues in Minnesota.
I especially like the introduction of the character of Lily. The sexual tension between Lucas and Lily is awesome! She is one of my favorite Davenport women because she "gets" him and is not concerned that he has to occasionally blow away the bad guys. It is refreshing to have her rescue Lucas instead of the other way around. Sandford also shows us Davenport's vulnerability with Lucas' stress reaction to the his near death experience.
Weaker Entry in the Series.......2007-05-03
SHADOW PREY is the second book in the "Lucas Davenport" series, and I personally believe it's one of the weakest ones.
The pacing of this novel is surprisingly slow in spots, and the villains are relatively dull. The book deals heavily with Native-American issues, but I don't feel that Sandford did a very good job of developing the Native-American characters. As he explains in his introduction, he had to rewrite this novel significantly to eliminate a lot of the social commentary that was contained in the first draft. The result is a novel that seems incomplete -- I didn't fully understand the killers and their motivations as well as I would have liked.
The romance in SHADOW PREY is also somewhat annoying. Davenport is a classic "bad boy" character who is more than happy to sleep with a married woman, and then go back home to his own girlfriend and child without a second thought. I know some readers like this wild aspect of Davenport's character, but I personally found it an unlikable characteristic, especially for a 41-year old man.
I like Sandford's writing style, but my advice is to skip this novel if you haven't read his books before. Start with RULES OF PREY instead.
Second "Prey" thriller delivers solid police action and tension-filled story.......2006-10-04
I enjoyed "Rules of Prey", the first entry in Mr. Sandford's long-running "Prey" series, so I happily picked up this follow-up title. This was very good, too: lots of tension, good banter between the cops, a challenging case, and some interesting fringe stuff involving Lucas Davenport's newest lady love and his other domestic challenges.
As far as cop thrillers go, there's nothing particularly earth shattering or ground breaking here, but I think that's the point: Mr. Sandford knows what a good cop thriller should be and delivers it, not worrying about throwing in gimmicky plot contrivances to set it apart from other thrillers. The entertainment comes from solid craftmanship, Sandford's eye for detail, a dozen or so engaging characters, and a good thriller story.
I also liked the shades of grey that complicate the proceedings in several areas. For example, one can't really blame the criminal antagonists here for wanting to accomplish their goals, which is to draw attention to the injustices against American Indians and exact revenge for one particular injustice. But things quickly spiral out of control when the antagonists use new violence to respond to old violence. And things are further complicated because one of the antagonists really likes doing violence, with "the cause" only being a convenient excuse to undertake it.
Like the new edition of "Rules of Prey" that I recently read, this new edition of "Shadow Prey" features a brief but illuminating new introduction by the author, where he discusses the challenges of coming up with a good follow up to a successful debut thriller.

Customer Reviews:
Not good.......2007-09-13
I came to this book in the series late, having read most of the othere. I can't recall the others being this bad or I wouldn't have read any more. I couldn't find anything to like about Lucas Davenport, he has the morals of an animal and his foul mouth I can't even find a comparison to. I agree totally with one reviewer from Oklahoma City.
I stopped reading it once, read another book and then went back to this and skimmed through it. Couldn't find anything that warranted a more detailed reading of it. And one reviewer has read it more than once. There's no shortage of books at our library and I sure wouldn't need to read this one again.
great ending salvages crime novel ... well, not really.......2006-04-24
'Shadow Prey' is the dullest of several John Sandford "Prey" novels I've read. It rambles on incoherently about several radical Native Americans in Minnesota who gruesomely kill white guys who've had a history of abuse towards them. No drama, characterizations are choppy, and our cop-hero Lucas Davenport doesn't even arouse the reader's interest because he's too busy chasing a lady cop from New York.
Thankfully the last fifty pages of 'Shadow Prey' are very suspenseful and enjoyable. However in no way this makes up the initial three hundred pages of literary churn.
Bottom line: pretty lame, mostly. Don't bother.
Worst.......2006-04-14
This is the worst book I've ever read. I've read almost all of John Sanford's books and usually enjoy them. I'm about 3/4 finished with this one and I'm not sure I can even finish it. Most of what I can remember about what I've read is being disgusted by the explicit sex and not being to define the characters. Really disappointing.
Shadow Prey.......2006-03-15
What interresting characters John Sanford developes. Be they good or bad or something in between they become very real to the reader. Even though we find out early who the guilty party is its interesting to see how Lucas Davenport, our somewhat flawed hero, figures things out. As the end nears it seems impossible to put the book down because you are never sure exactly what will come next. The crime grabs you, the characters hold you and the climax gets you. I think I will need to read more......
I'm glad this wasn't my first Sanford book because it would have been my last........2005-11-28
I am a big Sanford fan but this was my least favorite book in his Prey series. If this is the only one you have ever read pleas read another in the series because if you like murder mysteries you will be missing out on a great series. This is the only book in the series that I did not read in two days or less.
Customer Reviews:
John Sandford is a literary genius!!.......2006-07-24
Johns books are addictive,if you buy one, you will ultimatly want to buy them all.Exspecially if you start with this book
rules of prey,it reads fast....and your heartbeat does its
best to keep up.
3 Prey's back to back. What more could you want?.......2001-02-21
If you want a book that will you can't put down, well then this is the one for you. I have all the Prey novels and to date I can trully say that they have been the best reads ever. Davenport is one hell of a cop, and delivers justice in the best two fisted way I've come to read. The Criminals are dark and sinister, and I know these three stories will keep the reader rivited till the end and still wanting more. I know I did, and can't wait for the next one.
John Sanford is the best !.......1999-12-12
I have read all of the Prey series and am a really big fan. I wasn't always a person who does alot of recreational reading . But once i started the Prey series I can't stop I have read them all and am ready for his next release. I still think my favorite was Rules of Prey.
The most evil villains I have ever read........1998-08-22
I have read five of the "Prey" novels so far, including these three stories. Obviously, there is something about them that I find attractive, but in retrospect, I cannot honestly say what. The writing style is pleasant, but not taxing, and draws you along. The villains are the most evil people that I have ever read about, and always come to the same end. The number of psychos inhabiting John Sandford's Midwest is truly frightening, yet doesn't seem to surprise the locals. These books are the "sitcom-lites" of literature, but easy and quick to read.
Three great mystery books in one........1997-04-07
Sandford is a master at weaving this type of story. He keeps you reading through all three novels like it was one story. It was nice to see a author finally pick the great state of Minnesota for a setting
