Book Description

When Western missionaries introduced modern chemistry to China in the 1860s, they called this discipline hua-hsueh, literally, "the study of change." In this first full-length work on science in modern China, James Reardon-Anderson describes the introduction and development of chemistry in China in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and examines the impact of the science on language reform, education, industry, research, culture, society, and politics. Throughout the book, Professor Reardon-Anderson sets the advance of chemistry in the broader context of the development of science in China and the social and political changes of this era. His thesis is that science faired well at times when a balance was struck between political authority and free social development. Based on Chinese and English sources, the narrative moves from detailed descriptions of particular chemical processes and innovations to more general discussions of intellectual and social history, and provides a fascinating account of an important episode in the intellectual history of modern China.

4 out of 5 stars A struggle.......2004-08-05

A well suited book for the student of science history. It covers a hitherto much neglected topic - how chemistry developed in China, from 1840 to the rise of Communism. It describes many Chinese scientists who largely remain unknown outside China.

Most of the book of course describes how these scientists attempted valiently to catch up to the Europeans. In the face of much government and public indifference. We see how the scientists struggled with derisory funding. Perhaps it is remarkable that such progress as was made actually happened at all.

            Book Description

According to its tradition, the EUCAS Conference focused on the role of superconductivity in bridging various aspects of research with a variety of concrete advanced applications. The wide interactions among scientists operating worldwide in the field of superconductivity and the sharing of their knowledge and experience represented the main result of the event. The EUCAS Conference has been an ideal forum for presentation and discussion of recent developments in the field of applied superconductivity in the area of power and electronic applications. Great emphasis has been given to materials research directly connected to such applications. For this conference, 515 plenary, invited, and contributed papers were accepted, covering different areas of applications that strongly benefit from the use of superconductivity, such as energy transportation, large magnet systems, biomedical instrumentation, digital electronics, wireless communications, and quantum computing. Forty-two plenary and invited papers are included in Applied Superconductivity 2003, along with a CD-ROM that contains PDF files of all the contributed papers linked from contents lists (and, for completeness, plenary and invited papers). These proceedings are addressed to international physicists, electrotechnical and electronic engineers, material scientists, and chemists interested in the most recent and exciting advances in the field of applied superconductivity.

            Book Description

Annie's People Book 1- A new series from The New York Times bestselling author of the ABRAM'S DAUGHTERS series! The Preacher's Daughter begins a remarkable journey of heartache and homespun delight-a series readers will find impossible to forget. Paradise, Pennsylvania, is likened to a little slice of heaven on earth...but for Annie Zook-the preacher's eldest daughter-it seems like a dead-end street. She is expected to join the Amish church, but at 20 she is "still deciding." Because of the strict rules that guide the Plain community, she must continually squelch her artistic passion, although it has become her solace. In her signature style, with character depth and unexpected plot twists, beloved novelist Beverly Lewis once again opens the door to the world of the Amish.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to a new series.......2007-08-19

"The Preacher's Daughter" is the first book in a new series by Beverly Lewis. It introduces Annie Zook and her friend Louisa Stratford. Annie is one of the Plain People, she and Louisa have been pen pals for years and now Louisa comes to visit Annie. Louisa is a typical, wealthy, middle class woman. However disgruntled with her last relationship, she comes to meet Annie for the first time then stays as she finds the Plain life uncomplicated and calmer.

I find the Amish lifestyle interesting and Ms Lewis' descriptions of their everyday life fascinating. I have read several of her other novels and enjoyed them. This time, however, I found the ending disappointing as she obviously was just setting up the next book in this series. I would have enjoyed it more if this novel had stood alone rather than just being an introduction to the series.

            5 out of 5 stars Endearing.......2007-06-26

The only thing I would recommend before purchasing this book is to buy the 3 volume set of Annie's People by Beverly Lewis. This is a fun, heartful way to delve into the life of an Amish girl who is torn between her culture and her drive to explore beyond the strict rules of the Amish people. I feel like I know the characters in the book, and have enjoyed reading the whole series (I am almost done with the second book). I can't wait to see what Annie will choose to do with her life. It's an easy read. I highly recommend it!

            3 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2007-06-18

I thought the book moved slowly and wasn't very engaging. I was also disappointed that the book seems to be written in a series, unknown to me when starting, so in order to find out what happens to all of these characters I would have to read the other books. Ugh. I wasn't that thrilled with this one, but now I'm kind of invested. I'll have to decide if this book was enough to keep me going with so many other books on my list.

5 out of 5 stars The Preachers Daughter.......2007-06-15

Great story. I reccomend all of this authors books!

4 out of 5 stars A New Look at the Old Amish.......2007-06-12

The Preacher's Daughter is about a young Amish woman and her life with the "plain" folk of Paradise in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Some might think this is too tame for today's tastes. But, there are plenty of modern issues to whet modern readers' appetites. Romance, family conflicts, domestic abuse, pregnancy, even murder.

Annie Zook is the only daughter of an Old Order preacher. She has a secret passion that is forbidden by her church: painting. She loves to capture God's beauty on canvas. And she is very good. Meanwhile, her lifelong penpal, Louisa, breaks her engagement and flees to Paradise to experience the simple life. Louisa is a young art teacher from a wealthy family. She lives as Plain, although she has a cell phone which she charges at Annie's more modern Mennonite cousin's.

The Preacher's Daughter is a bird's eye inside view of Amish life. It will surprise the reader, and paint a new picture of whatever stereotypes he may hold of the bearded barn-builders.

The only thing I did not like appears right at the beginning of the book. The murder of a child is very troubling.

Ms. Taylor has written a beautiful, touching story about her life. As the daughter of a Baptist minister, I could relate to growing up in a southern town, faced with the struggles she experienced. As a social worker, I found her issues surrounding her mother's mental illness, international adoption, and facing her children's challenges in having two mommies and being adopted fascinating. As a human being, I found her story to be touching, beautiful, and a must read for everyone. I applaud your efforts, Jackie. I couldn't put the book down! Thanks for giving us such a beautiful story.

Though religion and the church have always played an important role in the lives of black Americans, the role that black women have played in the church is not as well known. Daughters of Thunder, a collection of 38 sermons by 14 black women preachers from the 1850s to the 1970s, is thus an important resource: it offers the voices of black women on matters both theological and political. As editor Bettye Collier-Thomas, an associate professor of history at Temple University, tells us, these women are "representative of a great American tradition heretofore largely unknown and untapped." In addition to the sermons, Collier-Thomas gives readers a historical summary of the work of black women preachers, as well as a chapter on black women preachers for whom she was able to find no sermons. There are also brief biographies for each of the 14 women whose sermons are included.

              Book Description

A priceless reference work in the history of Christian preaching that will revitalize the preaching of the twenty first century.
--Cheryl TownsAnd Gilkes, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur associate professor of African American studies and sociology, Colby College

This historic collection of never-before-published sermons by African American women preachers gives voice to the long-ignored founding mothers of the African American church. It provides long overdue access to the original text of the sermons coupled with expert contextual analysis by Dr. Bettye Collier-Thomas, a respected scholar of African American history.

These sermons reveal women of great faith, courage, and wisdom and cover a range of topics, from racial and gAnder discrimination in the church and society to the tenets of their shared theology. Addressing causes and issues of Anduring importance, these sermons still resonate today and help us to understand the past.

In a special chapter, Collier-Thomas tells the story of the earliest black women preachers who, while their sermons have yet to be unearthed, greatly influenced both their contemporaries and those who followed by their courageous claiming of the pulpit.

Daughters of Thunder sheds new light on an important chapter in American history. Preachers will find within these pages inspiration for their own sermons.

Bettye Collier-Thomas is associate professor of history and director of the Temple University Center for African American History and Culture.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Sister Power.......2005-05-26

The African woman's American experience was born with the Atlantic slave trade. Bartered for cheap trinkets or outright stolen they were viewed as disposable commodities in the world of commerce. Their American experience effectively disintegrated their concepts of reality and rendered all chaotic. To survive in the Americas it was necessary to re-examine, re-construct and or replace their sacred cosmos which had given order and purpose to their lives. The Christianity that became their own allowed them identity and redefinition. It was this faith of compassion born of the experience of suffering that sustained and nurtured their souls. The response to the power of the Gospel was the ignition of a fire to preach. Historically, Black men who preached filled a role that was, at least a traditional male one, but Black women preachers experienced cultural conflict within their own black society. Mothers, wives, and bearers of the word, African-American women faced a hostile pulpit. Initially, their call to preach the gospel was not recognized by the churches they served.

Bettye Collier-Thomas presents in her work, Daughters of Thunder: Black Women Preachers and Their Sermons, 1850 - 1979, a remarkable account of both the historical/biographical struggles and the contextual content of the work of fourteen African-American women called to preach the gospel. These women address the social and theological concerns of a people mired in the degradation of racial and gender inequality. They exhort their listeners to hear the social gospel inherent in the good news. Many of the sermons concern themselves with the welfare of children, of the role of strong families in the community of faith and the role of women in the church. These sermons are timeless in their appeal to building a stronger community of faith. My only concern is that Collier-Thomas while giving an excellent overview of the history of African-American women and the call to preach and wonderful biographies of Black women preachers beginning in 1850 has no entries for the years of 1949 - 1978. Given the crucial years of the civil rights struggle in America I would liked to have heard contemporaneous voices.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful stories & sermons of powerful, inspiring women.......1998-12-08

Ms. Collier-Thomas has written a flowing commentary on the tribulations of people called by God to preach and then battered in their odysseys to fulfill that calling because of their gender as well as their race. Ms. Collier-Thomas' prose is a joy to read. She sets the background in which each of these remarkable women worked, as well as recounting fairly and evenly the issues of contention they lived through. The book is worthwhile for the sermons alone -- the biographies and history make it a "must read" for feminists, historian, spiritual seekers, and Christians alike.

                    Book Description

Was she the answer to his prayers?

Pastor Tanner Bond needed to break town the barriers between his congregation and the Mexican-Americans who had recently moved to Pleasant Prairie. But he didn't expect God to send him Lucie Hansen. . .

Lucie was bold, brash and bilingual. She was determined to help Tanner understand his new Hispanic residents, but she was also his complete opposite -- impulsive and confident, while he pondered and prayed before acting. Growing up as a "preacher's kid," Lucie had resented the restrictions put on her. She didn't want to have feelings for Tanner. . .even though she did. Would her rush to bring harmony do more harm than good? And would the preacher's daughter realize she's make a perfect pastor's wife?

5 out of 5 stars Loved It! I couldn't put it down. Romantic and Fun!.......2005-03-06

I hated to read as a child and wished that I would love to read. God worked in my life to where this was my very first inspirational book I read. When I started reading I could not put it down for wanting to know what was going on. I truely enjoied this book. It is a very cute love story of two complete opposites. It is about compromise and God's will working in the hearts of the characters. I highly recommend it! I know that I can read this book over and over. Now I love to read and I know that God started working in my life through inspiring words of authors with great knowledge of Godly lives. Sit back on the porch and relax for a great adventure.

4 out of 5 stars great weekend read w/entertaining characters.......2004-04-14

This book was fabulous. I have long enjoyed romantic fiction, but I find many of the "romance" novels are way too racy for me. However, I have previously been disappointed by Christian romantic fiction-the characters are just too often too dry, with a kiss at the very end! In this book, I appreciated how Lyn Cote allowed us to see the romance between Tanner & Lucie develop, instead of lots of longing looks and troubles interfering until their romance blossoms in the last ten pages. It was much more realistic and human-you could see how Tanner & Lucie grew in their love for each other, but also were true to God's will for their lives and their personalities. That made it fun to read! I will definitely be buying more of her books.
