      Book Description

This volume provides a non-mathematical introduction to electronic excitation in organic molecules and their spectroscopy, photophysics, and photochemistry.

Simple qualitative models, such as the perimeter model, are used to describe the nature of electronic states, and this book reveals how these states are probed by spectroscopy with ordinary and polarized light, including natural and magnetic circular dichroism. The concept of potential energy surfaces is emphasized in discussing the photophysical processes and photochemical reactions that follow excitation. Particular attention is paid to the behavior of molecules at biradicaloid geometries and spin-orbit coupling in biradicals.

Simple intuitive models for electronic structure and reactivity are emphasized, and practical application of theory is illustrated through numerous worked examples.

      5 out of 5 stars The end-all be-all of photochem.......2004-03-09

I took a number of chem classes with Nick Turro and plain and simple, the man radiates brilliance. Modern Molecular Photochemistry has been the de facto standard for photochem since the 1960s and loses none of it's excellence today. Good book for any undergrad/grad doing Chem/ChemE-related work. Very useful, very relevant, and just plain excellent.

5 out of 5 stars for the novice or advanced photochemist/spectroscopist.......2002-10-22

This is the first book to read on organic photophysics. Turro is a wonderful teacher; the introductory chapters of this book clearly explain basic concepts that other books skip entirely. I would particularly recommend this book to anyone who is new to the field and/or timid about physical chemistry, although it is certainly appropriate for more advanced students/professionals as well. The advanced reader can skip the first few chapters and still find plenty of useful reference material on energy transfer, photochemical reactions, spectroscopy, etc. There are other photochemistry textbooks available but the price makes this one the best value.

5 out of 5 stars This book was with me all the time when I was in school.......1999-04-09

Excellent. My leisure reading as well as serious references

            Book Description

Methods of X-ray and Neutron Scattering in Polymer Science presents the basic theories underlying x-ray and neutron scattering--two of the most powerful tools for characterizing materials--and also covers the various techniques that have been developed for their application to the study of polymers. While there is a great deal of similarity between the x-ray and neutron scattering methods, the two were developed in different time periods by different groups of scientists, and as a result very distinct terminologies evolved to explain the same phenomena. In this unique text the two are presented together from the very beginning, with a consistent set of symbols and terminologies, so that students can become equally familiar with both from the outset. Also, to help students gain a unified view of diffraction, the distinction between wide-angle diffraction and small-angle scattering is postponed until late in the text. Methods of X-ray and Neutron Scattering in Polymer Science emphasizes basic concepts rather than details of specific techniques and derives relationships from first premises wherever possible. Beginning with coverage of the basic properties of x-rays and neutrons and their scattering from matter, it goes on to discuss methods of studying specific types of samples or properties. Topics covered include single-component crystalline and amorphous polymers; the small-angle scattering technique; binary, single-phase systems such as polymer blend and polymer solution; the technique of reflectivity measurement; and polymer dynamics by means of inelastic neutron scattering. A perfect introductory textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in polymer science,Methods of X-ray and Neutron Scattering in Polymer Science also serves as a helpful self-study tool for polymer scientists seeking an introduction to scattering techniques. Further reading lists at the end of each chapter encourage readers to explore more advanced topics on their own.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Useful guide on scattering for Polymer Scientists .......2006-06-07

Ryoung-Joon Roe presents a handy reference and introduction to x-ray and neutron scattering, where emphasis is placed on using a terminology that helps the reader learn about both the techniques simultaenously. Scattering has served as one of the most important characterization tools for polymer community. This book outlines the basic mathematics and experimental details required to understand the structure and properties as revealed by these scattering methods in: crystalline and amorphous polymers, polymer solutions and blends, polymer dynamics and block copolymers. While emphasis is placed on demonstrating how all scattering shares similar theories and philosophy, the choice of several examples and applications of either techniques is used to remark on aspects peculiar to either X-ray studies or Neutron Scattering.

Since most serious students of polymer science are familiar with light scattering, the book would appeal them as perfect guide to familiarize themselves with limits and use of neutron and X-ray scattering. A more detailed discussion on Polymers and Neutron Scattering is found in the classic text by Julia S. Higgins and Henry C. Beno^it, while for Light Scatttering texts by Pecora & Berne and by Wyn Brown are essential references. Compared to those classic references, Roe's text will appear as more accessible to people seeking introduction to scattering methods. By the same token, it contains only the essence, the flavor of aspects of polymer behavior, say crystallization, surface studies or dynamics, and one will need to delve into the other texts if he seeks exhaustive discussion.

              Book Description

Chromic phenomena, or those produced by materials which exhibit colour in response to a chemical or physical stimulus, have increasingly been at the heart of 'high-tec' developments in a variety of fields in the last decade. Many of the newer technologies, which are at the cutting edge of research, are multi-disciplinary, involving researchers from areas as diverse as physics, biology, materials science and electronic engineering. Chromic Phenomena covers five main areas: - Colour change materials, such as photochromic, thermochromic and electrochromic materials - Materials which absorb and reflect light - the classical dyes and pigments - Luminescent phenomena, including phosphorescence, fluorescence and electroluminescence - Materials which absorb light and transfer energy, eg photosensitisers, infra-red absorbers and laser-addressable compounds - Phenomena involving the manipulation of light by chemicals, such as liquid crystals, lustre pigments, optoelectronics and photonics Providing an entry point both for new researchers and for established ones, this book, with its emphasis on the technological applications of these chromic phenomena, develops and investigates new applications for colour chemistry. It will be of interest to industrialists and professionals in the biological, medicinal, electronics/telecommunications and colorant industries, as well as academics in these fields.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sequel to Book 1........2007-08-29

I don't know if it possible but Patricia Briggs has astounded this reader once again. She has outdone herself with Book 2 of The Raven Duology.

Vivid, imaginative, full of mystery, supsense and magic. What more can you ask for?

5 out of 5 stars Interesting setting, neat characters.......2007-07-07

_Raven's Strike_ is a continuation of _Raven's Shadow_. _Raven's Strike_ starts with the magicly gifted Seraph going home with her husband Tier, their sons Jes and Lehr, and their companion Hennea. At the end of _Raven's Shadow_, Tier had been rescued from an evil cult by the others, and the kingdom's young emperor had been saved at the same time. Tier had been badly beaten, but also had demonstrated a gift for a type of magic usually only seen within Travelers such as Hennea, Seraph, and Seraph's children Jes, Lehr and Rinnie.

Once they get home, things don't slow down for Tier and Seraph and their family. The new emperor Phoran needs help rooting out a conspiracy against him; Tier is sick and steadily getting sicker; and there is a Shadowed enemy still around who is killing Traveler clans. Jes and Hennea are still trying to sort out the nature of their relationship, or whether they even want to have a relationship, while Seraph and Hennea are trying to work out the pecking order between two very strong-minded and dominant females. In the middle of all this, it becomes necessary to find a lost city that hasn't existed for over a thousand years, before the emperor is overthrown and Tier fades away into a mindless shell.

I read _Raven's Strike_ without having read _Raven's Shadow_, the first in the series. Consequently, there were comments and concepts in _Raven's Strike_ that I didn't understand right away. It would probably be better for the reader to start with _Raven's Shadow_.

With that admission out of the way -- I loved this book! The action scenes tended to be a bit brief, but watching the growing relationships between characters was a worthy trade for that. I liked the strong characters, the explanations of magic and how the Traveler magic works was interesting, the mermori and library with its Scholar were fascinating to read about, and the whole story of the dead gods and the balance of the Weaver and the Stalker was really well done.

However, before I suggested this book to anyone, I would recommend they read _Raven's Shadow_ first.

                        5 out of 5 stars Raven's Strike.......2006-11-08

I really liked the story and the characters. There was just the right blend of serious, funny, action and interaction among the characters. I would recommend this to anyone who liked sci-fi fantasy.

1 out of 5 stars weak sequel - plot, characters second to ideas.......2006-08-13

this was a very weak sequel to the excellent Raven's Shadow. the plot plods. the characters aren't as fun - they are always worrying about each other like an overprotective family. the worst is that the whole second half of the book is heavy on explantions on the 'history' of why this world has Shadowed in it - not interesting, not well thought out, and all teh action stops dead over and over. a real disappointment from an author that can do better.

also, 30 pages are missing in the middle of the book, with chapter fifteen repeating instead!

                        4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Sequel--Doubtlessly.......2006-07-05

Raven's Strike is a brilliant sequel to Raven's Shadow. It has Brigg's usual touches, and no one element overpowers another. Everything is very balanced, between plot, characters, and setting. It holds your interest for hours at a time yet you don't forget it in a week...

I give it 4.5 stars because the ending was rushed. Way too rushed. You are deep into the story, then suddenly it's BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG and it's over. I felt that the ending definitely could have been expanded to allow for a less drastic pace.

I also would have enjoyed this more if I had reread Raven's Shadow before hand. Many of the times I was lost, wondering who was who again, and why they had to do this and what was that.

Nevertheless, this was still an awesome book and a worthy sequel without a doubt. The Raven duo is original and fresh, compelling and engaging. You never want to put them done, because the characters are incredible and everything they do and say is vivid in your mind.

I recommend this book and its sequel to any lover of fantasy, male or female, young or old. It's a wonderful addition to any fantasy collection, without a doubt.
