Customer Reviews:
Another good one!.......2007-03-14
There was so much bitterness in Jessie, I almost put the book down and walked away. I'm so glad I didn't though! Different pace from the first book, but still excellent!!!
As good, if not better than the first!.......2007-01-03
I grew up in Kenya (just as Catherine Palmer did), and so reading this book was like reading about home. I nearly cried in some parts! While this book is not as adventurous and fast-paced as "A Kiss of Adventure", the plot is much more believable and easier to follow. The story of Jessica and Rick is absolutely beautiful, and extremely well-written. Likewise, I was very impressed with the writing in the parts from Spencer's point of view.
This is one of the best Palmer books I've ever read, and I would highly recommend it. You can tell that her knowledge of African ways comes from experience, and not research, and it makes the book so much more enjoyable. A must-read!
Beautiful!.......2006-08-30
This book, like the others in this series, is set in Africa. The author packs it full of history and details current to their culture today. The romance is touching and exciting. A beautiful read!
Wonderful Love Story!.......2005-01-15
I could absolutely not put this book down! It is sooo good. I loved how Catherine Palmer wove the story together gracefully. Nothing dull at all. Nothing inapropriatte in the least which is hard to find any more! The Treasures of the Heart series doesn't have to be read in order at all, and I think this is the best one to start with. You will not be disapointed!!!!!
Romancejunkie.......2001-07-12
Catherine Palmer has done it again! Another great tale of romance and suspense in Africa. I especially love the way she shows that the love of God can overcome any obstacle, even unforgiveness.

Incestuous melodrama.......2006-07-19
Adria Hart has arrived in Portland at the Danvers Hotel in search of the family from which she might have been kidnapped two decades earlier. The Danvers heirs, all grown children of deceased patriarch Witt Danvers are used to long lost sisters surfacing. Witt has an unusual will - half his estate goes to lost daughter London Danvers - the rest divided among his other heirs, and they will do anything to keep Adria from collecting.
While the family is convinced she's a fake, ne'er do well middle son Zach is intrigued by her. She is the spitting image of his stepmother, the woman who took his virginity. On the one hand he thinks she might be his half sister, and on the other hand, he is extremely attracted to her.
Someone does not want Adria to rediscover her family and inheritance - they have gone to great lengths to scare her off, resulting in Zach bringing her out to live with him at his ranch. Several stolen kisses lead to passion in each other's arms, but they realize that until they know whether they are blood-related, they cannot continue the relationship. It is gross since they very possibly could be brother and sister and know each other biblically, and the outcome is a little too pat and convenient as if to justify the two losing their self control.
The story can be convoluted and pretty slow at times, shifting from 1973, 1980, and 1993 to tell the drawn out story. Jackson recently reissued the novel by beefing it up and cleaning up some dangling plot lines, making even longer (which is not necessarily better).
Strange Relationship.......2003-02-11
I was loooking forward to this book after reading one other by this auther. I was disappointed that the author had to two main characters involved in a serious relationship before they discovered whether they were related. That seemed really outside the boundries of acceptable behavior. I do like how the author writes, and I will read other books, but this one is not a keeper.
A compelling tale of courage and love, as well as intrigue........2002-12-13
When young London is kidnapped from her messed-up family, everything goes haywire, yet she was never found and was persumed dead. Now, years later, Adria Nash,"London", is back, and wants be apart of the family. But she wasn't expecting the sexual tension between her, and her half-brother Zack. A sense of harsh reality, sexual tension, adventurous action, and mysterious happenings, and murder. All a taste of what is the real world folks! Wake up and smell this sexy, compelling, and mysterious, harsh book ready to be read. This book kept me reading until i had it finished. Trust me, if you love a sence of practicality, harsh murder and lust for money and beautiful women, and the ideals of the world, not just romantic fantasy, this is a book you'll never be able to put down!
Excellent romantic suspense.......2000-08-10
Adria nash believes she's the heiress London Danvers, a child kidnapped 20 years ago from her family's hotel. She's back and wants to be reunited with the family she missed. The family wants to believe she's a fraud after all several want to be Londons have approached them for the family's millionaires. So ok Adria looks so much like London's mother did before she died maybe she is for real but the family wants to keep the money to themselves. Fighting his attraction for Adria is Zach, who might be her half brother or is he. Throw in whodunit, a family enemy, and greed and you have the ingrediants for a good story
AWESOME BOOK!!!! JUST AWESOME!.......1999-04-04
Whom ever is wondering if this is a good book... take it from me...it had me on the edge of my seat through every page! It was extremely passionate and mysterious! It is an awesome book and I would love to see a movie made from it! GREAT BOOK!

Not for Mother's Day nor Father's Day. ERRRRCK! 1 star.......2005-11-09
Can't disagree more with the reader who thinks this
would make a good Father's Day gift. What father would
want to read a "wanna-be" pirate's novel from a
wanna-be novelist? It reads as phoney to me, sorry.
Very phoney. Not for Mother's Day nor Father's Day.
Like the gentleman writing in from Istanbul,
I could put it down and did. 1 star.
A Great Read Chock Full of Outrageous Characters.......2004-10-18
This madcap and sometimes melancholy novel set in the Virginia tidewater region reads like a somewhat more literary riff on a Carl Hiassen caper, right down to the oddball gangsters and the anti-development sermonizing. The protagonist, Tim Doyle, is the latest in a long line of self-made adventurers and rogues. These ancestors are presented in vivid standalone sections prefacing each section. The first of this is a notorious pirate from the 1670s, who may or may not have buried his treasure in Virginia. Later Doyles include a hardscrabble oysterman in the 1770s who sells to George Washington, a gambler in 1850s New Orleans who becomes part of an ill-fated predecessor to the Bay of Pigs operation, a tough as nails oysterman in 1890s Virginia who battles the oyster conglomerates and their hired thugs, and an ex-Marine in post-WWII Los Angeles.
In the present day, Tim Doyle is living in Paris, having been thrown out by his marriage and restaurant by his Spanish wife. He receives a message that his beloved uncle has died, leaving Tim the last remaining Doyle land in Virginia, complete with pirate-themed miniature golf course and roadhouse bar. He arrives to find his uncle's young mistress minding the property, and a surprisingly large offer to buy his land from a real estate development outfit fronted by his old drug-dealing pal Roach. This offer coincides with the appearance of a dissected albino possum left in one of the miniature golf dioramas as a warning, which only gets Doyle's dander up and makes him stubborn and determined not to sell. The story plays out as Doyle doggedly attempts to find out who is after his land and why, as more and more improbable forces are arrayed against him.
As with Hiassen, every character is both improbable and completely engrossing. There's Doyle's ex-girlfriend Bracken, an old money belle who is determined to erase her entire inheritance as fast as possible. His old pal Roach, who has traded his coke dealership for a spot on the city council and lives in a lavish spread with a strange Jamaican servant/mistress. A crew of Irish hoodlums (including a dwarf), led by a ridiculously gay capo whose legitimate business is air conditioning. The gangster's pothead daughter, who is determined to bed Doyle. Not to mention the two dour Fish and Wildlife Service agents who arrive to investigate the dead albino possum...
The plot rattles along at breakneck speed, as Doyle keeps getting attacked, seduced, and general made the target of all manner of mischief. Corrupt corporations figure, as do corrupt local governments, good ole' boy sheriffs, Chinese slave laborers, ancient pirate treasure, and a fight night. It's all over the map, incorporating elements of the thriller, the multigenerational family saga, old fashioned adventure, and sexy romp. Girardi just barely manages to keep it all together, but the sheer exuberance of it all, the oversized characters, vivid language, and fascinating backstory combine to make it a great read.
Pirates yesterday, Mobsters today; finest kind of tale.......2004-07-29
If you've ever had a thing for pirates (and who has not?!), enjoyed miniature golf on a summer night or go for a semi-raunchy read, then Girardi's The Wrong Doyle is for you. I quite liked it. A terrific summer read, any other time of the year works out pertty good, too. Entertaining and diverting; made me want to visit that part of the Virginia/Maryland coast.
Remember this book for Father's Day.......2004-06-16
Robert Girardi is a little-known genius who deserves to be much better-known. In an age when women dominate the bestseller lists (Dan Brown notwithstanding) Girardi writes tough, hilarious, touching and downright swashbuckling books for men. Forget DaVinci, The Wrong Doyle will have you dreaming of whiskey, women, fishing and shooting in a picaresque but vanishing little corner of America.

not too bad.......2007-06-27
At first I was a little iffy about the main man being an artist. But what he did with the dual personna and the heroine was clever. I liked the humor and sizzle in the dialogue between them. I just might look her up for the next book. For historicals, I'm hooked on Kleypas, Jeffries, Foley, Hoyt, and Moning. We'll see about alexander after I read another one of hers.
Cute & harmless fun.......2007-05-30
This book was a welcome relief from the dogs I'd been chugging through prior to reading this one. Cute story, sweet romance, characters are pretty interesting and it's nice to see an actual relationship based on respect and affection developing between the two main characters rather than one in which they basically just want to roll around on the floor trying to copulate in as many strange and varied ways as possible. Parts are a little silly (the guy pretending to be a mysterious artist that wants to seduce the woman--how could any woman be stupid enough to fall for this?), but the supporting characters were wonderful and the story ended in a predictable but fun way.
Effington Series .......2006-03-06
This is second book of the Effington Series. This one has the love match between Lady Gillian and The Earl of Shelbrooke. Lady Gillian (who is a widow) has to marry again before her 30th birthday and her two male friends make her a list of potential husbands. Lady Gillian asks Richard ~ The Earl of Shelbrooke to marry her but he will only agree if it is a 'real' marriage. I would recommend all of The Effington Series; The Wedding Bargain, Husband List, Marriage Lesson, The Prince's Bride, Her Highness, My Wife, Love with the Proper Husband, The Lady in Question, The Pursuit of Marriage, A Visit from Sir Nicholas, When We Meet Again (my favorite and conclusion of the previous earlier stories The Prince's Bride, Her Highness, My Wife sub-plots) and the most recent Let It Be Love.
Quite A List It Was...........2006-01-04
I have purchased a few novels by this author. Earlier works I really enjoyed by her were "The Wedding Bargain" (charming and fun), "When We Meet Again" (strong characters and plot), "The Lady in Question" (solid) and "The Pursuit of Marriage" (good). "The Husband List" is the next one I choose. Although I liked this book, it wasn't as good for me as the other ones I read.
Gillian is the heroine in this book and Richard the hero. Gillian was married for years to her childhood sweetheart and then he died in battle for the King. She was alone for many years but, recovered and her life continued with social outings, get togethers and family. She needs to find a husband by her 30th birthday or she'll loose a large inheritance. She creates a list of the best husbands in town with the help of her two best guy friends and it's off to the races. She meets with Richard as he tops the list - good looks, good manners, good family history and title etc. Little know to Gillian - Richard is a reformed rogue and rake and trying to be good since his father died. He has become honorable by taking care of his sisters, their family estate and the good family name. Richard is poor in cash - heavily in debt on the family estate - when they meet but, rich in spirit.
The story takes a number of twists and turns - who Richard really is, what he does for a living, how a famous painter Etienne and the arts plays into their relationship, why they both want the inheritance so bad and if the money can truly bring them together as a real husband and wife. I would have liked that they wait a little longer to be fully intimate and that there be more temptation and seduction before the big scene but, it was not to be. I also felt they spent a bit of time apart during their two month courtship and a bit of deception here and there but, I figure the author felt that added to the story. There was no formal engagement, wedding or follow up scene and I would have liked that to cement their relationship at the end as well.
Many of the side characters were appealing to learn about - Gillian's two male childhood friends Kit & Robin, Richards four sisters - Marianne, Jocelyn, Becky & Emma, etc. This author is good at making the characters interesting and the story develop in a detailed and enriching way. Her books are not hot, passionate and intense rather...they are light, warm, witty and usually fun to read.
You can't help but, be drawn into the story after you see the descriptions on Gillian's husband list such as: "Lord Tyndale - remarkably well spoken for a man with few teeth" or "Lord Runley - elegant in appearance but, with the intelligence of a small mutton chop" or " Lord Harkin - short bald and altogether unaware of his distinct resemblance to a hairless rabbit". See...you will smile and enjoy this story and understand why she HAD to choose The Earl of Shelbrooke and why she didn't regret it.
I look forward to reading her other stories...history has proven she's a romance author worth reading. I stretched it a little giving four stars on this one --- probably could have been 3 1/2 but...Ms. Alexander is so good over-all, she deserves the extra credit. Enjoy!
Just a perfect story!.......2005-10-17
I absolutely loved this book. In some of the others in this series I found the heroes a little flighty and shallow - and the women truly silly and way too overbearing. These two were perfect. what could be better than Richard, a reformed rake, with deep dark secrets? He was everything that Gillian could want in a husband thus she had him at the top of her list. But she did not even begin to know why he was the most perfect man for her. In addition to being sexy, handsome, a truly good and decent person he also had his secret life as the artist Toussaint. And Gillian was such a patron of artists - she had no idea that her two worlds would truly come together by offering Richard to share her fortune if they would marry. Richard had had some really challenging years financially which is why he had reformed and put everything into restoring his lands, paying of family debts and trying to make a life for his 4 sisters. He had always been enchanted with Gillian, but felt she was totally out of his league. She wants a marriage in name only. Well Richard could never agree to that so he agrees to court/seduce her. Actually both of his characters himself and the artist Toussaint both decide to seduce her. This to me was so interesting. It really made this book different than others - and I loved watching Gillian react to both of them - she was actually falling for both men, and it was the same man. Somehow deep down her inner self must have instinctively known that. And of course Gillian being the observant one, realizes they are the same. And when she seduces Toussaint to pay him a lesson well that was beautiful. This was not a silly book at all. It was full of heartfelt emotions and Richard proved to be what a deep, caring, sexy sensitive man he truly was - throughout. I absolutely loved this book. I found it by far the best so far in this series which I think I have read 1/2 now. I think readers of this series will find this at the top!

Book Description
This newest of the Elm Creek Quilts novels continues the series with a tribute to matriarch Sylvia Compson, who surprised her fellow quilters by marrying her longtime sweetheart on a recent holiday. Eager to honor their favorite Master Quilter, the Elm Creek Quilters hasten to stitch a bridal quilt for the newlyweds. Until the time comes to unveil the surprise gift, Sylvia will be the one in the dark.
Such little white lies seem harmless enough. But the quilting retreat at Elm Creek Manor thrives on women sharing their creativity, their challenges and their dreams. Somehow, in their race to commemorate in the bridal quilt all they hold dear about Sylvia's wisdom, skill and devotion, her fellow quilters forget to give honesty its pride of place.
Just when it seems that the women have everything to celebrate, forces conspire to threaten their happiness and prosperity. Two among them falter in their personal relationships, while another suffers financial problems. As still two others weigh the comfort of the present against dreams of a future far from Elm Creek Manor, closely guarded secrets strain the bonds of friendship with those who may be left behind.

Friendships and mystery........2006-12-08
This book was obviously not the first in the series, but this is where I decided to jump in. I am hooked! Women and friendships, plus a bit of mystery, I couldn't put it down, even when my eyes were trying to shut on me.
It was a bit confusing at the beginning when it reads back and forth, but I soon caught on and it had me hook, line and sinker. I love the books without foul language, sex etc.
It starts out, Sylvia gets married without telling anyone, and so the ladies decide to have everyone make a quilt piece for a quilt for the newlyweds. Someone breaks into the quilt shop, destroys a dream and takes all the made quilt pieces. Who was it? Why did they do it? Will friendships be torn apart with so many secrets? Read this and find out!
Repetitive.......2006-11-03
I found this book to be unbearably repetitive. The same situations with the same dialogs from the viewpoints of about 8 different characters were repeated again and again. It was very frustrating to read and I found myself skimming over parts of the book.
That being said, I did enjoy the plot. Despite my earlier comment, I do think Jennifer Chiaverini is a great writer, as earlier books in the series have proven to me. I like reading the parts about quilting, of course, because I find it inspiring and it helps me to get in the mood to do my own quilting. Her characters and their relationships with one another are also interesting and dynamic.
I do hope she will continue to add books to the series as I am a faithful follower of the series.
GREAT TOPIC but to repative.......2006-08-17
I have read five of the Elm Creek novels and enjoyed all for different reasons. This one I can't say was that great. The author kept repeating the facts over again with each character and it began to get very boring. I wanted to skip sections and move on. I would have prefered more quilting tips and information regarding quilts and less scandals.
Great idea, good themes, and amazing style.......2006-05-24
This book felt like an experiment in group quilting in itself. The style was quite amazing and a little disconcerting in the first 50 pages, once I got into it I really enjoyed it.
The book starts with a planning session for the coming summer season, there are problems afoot with some of the Elm Creek Quilters and also joy. They have decided that they will celebrate 85 year old Sylvia's coming wedding with a special quilt and have invited all the previous Elm Creek Quilters to submit a square. Everyone at the meeting is distracted however, and Judy has to field a couple of cell phone calls. Later in the first week of camp there is disruption, Judy is called away at the last moment and has to leave her classes for Sarah to organise, and Bonnie just doesn't turn up to her class.
All is slowly revealed in a very nice manner. The following chapters are all devoted to telling the story leading up to and including the day of the class disasters, from several different points of view. There are some mysteries - why, how and who broke into Bonnie's shop, what will happen to Craig and Bonnie (of Grandma's quilts), where is all Craig's money? and how can Grandma's Quilts be saved? Where is Judy? Will the group get enough squares for Sylvia? Will they find the missing squares? and finally, what will Summer and Judy decide to do?
These are small mysteries but it is not immediately obvious what the outcome is. Chiaverini is definitely not a mystery writer, the issue of Craig and his money is telegraphed early on. But this isn't a dreadful thing, this is a novel about human relationships and interaction, not about solving whodunnits and the resolution is the important thing.
There are some nice little touches, Gwen is passed over for promotion, but in the action finds greater strength to pursue her interest in quilting and 'women's work' as forging the nation and as a bonus her reptuation on campus as the 'quilt lady' allows her to recover an important item which might not have otherwise come to light. It also helps her solve a crime.
The only real drawback to this novel (for me) is the ongoing dispute with Mary-Beth, the next door neighbour and almost pathologically jealous president of the Waterford Quilting Society who the Elm Creek Quilters walked away from. Seeing things from her point of view was interesting for a change, but I dislike her so much, and her viewpoint is so black that it is hard to feel she is anything but a one dimensional villain. Now having said that, I know that people like her exist. But I suppose I just prefer that characters in a rich novel like this be deeper and more profound in their actions and motivations.
Overall I really enjoyed this novel and I read it quickly. The series is amazing and the trials and tribulations of the women and their quilting are compelling. I am looking forward tot he next in the series.
6th installment of the Elm Creek series.......2006-05-12
This is the 6th book in the series. I have read the first five, and enjoyed them all. I didn't care for this one as much as the others. The Author (Jannifer Chiaverini) has said that this was planned to be the last in the series. But she did very well with this book (high sales) and so the series continues past this.
However you can tell that she made some attempt to wrap-up some stories. What I didn't like about this book was that if felt VERY negative. Bad divorce... also very unbelieveable story about the wife being locked out of the condo... Bad real-estate development deal... Slimy and made you feel like you needed to take a shower and get clean after it.... NASTY neighbor who never learns her lesson, and is raising a mean-hateful son... Distruction of property with silly insurance problem... Hip, cool Mom who acts like in idiot when FULLY grown daughter moves in with boy-friend. Really... it went on and on. (Don't even get me started on the bad husband or the college chairmanship.)
If I had it to do over again, I would read this series HOWEVER I would skip this one.
On the good side, nice to hear about the wedding quilt and what each person picked to express their feelings for Sylvia and Andrew.

A wonderful book for information on what to do with an older quilt. Gives factors to consider before making a decision to repair a quilt or leave it as it is. Also instructs one on how to make repairs to older quilts. Lots of interesting information. Best book I have found so far in how to treat an old quilt.
