Nucleic Acids: Structures, Properties, and Functions
ASIN: 0387907610 |
Book Description
During the last decade the advances in molecular biology have increasingly emphasized the importance of the hydrogen bond in biological interactions. Hydrogen-bonding in assemblages of biological molecules examined from the structural point of view is a main focus of the present book. Hydrogen-bonding is thereby defined in its broadest sense, as many attractive interactions involving a covalently bonded hydrogen atom. The concept of the hydrogen bond structure is developed, as is the role of cooperativity, in stabilizing particular structures and hydrogen-bonding dynamics. The information presented is based on the extraordinary increase in quantitative structural data that has become available from X-ray and neutron diffraction studies of crystal structures involving small and large biological molecules. Included are structural data of particular types of hydrogen bonds as well as data for different types of molecules, such as carbohydrates, purines and pyrimidines, nucleosides and nucleotides, ices and hydrates, cyclodextrins, nucleic acids and proteins.

Book Description
Like the preceding volumes, Volume 3 of Annual Surfactants Review focuses on the diversity of surfactants, both in terms of chemical structure and physico-chemical/surface active properties. Although they may be predictable for simple molecules, for most commercial surfactants, this is not easy. It remains important, however, to understand the interactions within a multi-component mixture in order to select the most appropriate product for an application. Chapter One of this volume considers surfactant application in the context of structure-performance relationships. It forms a unique guide to the influence of chemical structure on end-use performance that illustrates how some of the newer classes of surfactants overcome deficiencies of previously used products. Chapter Two explores surfactant-polymer interactions-an area of significant current interest. The remaining chapters illustrate the diversity of surfactant applications and focus on some of the latest developments in application technology. Written by outstanding scientists in the field of surface chemistry, Surface Active Behaviour of Performance Surfactants continues the tradition of Annual Surfactants Review by covering carefully selected topics that offer a snapshot of the many studies undertaken worldwide. It provides a valuable reference for chemists whose work involves the production, formulation, and application of surface active agents.

The authors guide you through blotting procedures and explain how each method works, highlighting the common pitfalls. Trying to master blotting techniques can be a frustrating experience, but help is at hand with "Nucleic Acid Blotting: The Basics". Together with the companion volume, "Nucleic Acid Hybridization: The Basics", you will be armed with all the fundamental information you need to become expert in these tricky techniques.
Customer Reviews:
Best book you can find.......2007-07-02
Practical book that will teach you everything you need to know about blotting...you will not need anything else...The pictures are also great
Highly recommended!!!
Good basic book.......2001-02-24
This book is good for beginners. It tells you why each step is done & how to avoid mistakes. It does not give protocols. I wish I had this book before I started blotting! I am buying this book for my lab, so incoming graduate students (& undergrads!) will find it useful. It does not give details on hybridization which ideally should have been included in the same volume.

Book Description
Antisense technology is a powerful procedure that permits the controlled silencing of a specific gene for investigations of mRNA and protein function. This valuable text provides proven step-by-step protocols for antisense techniques in a range of different organisms and cell culture systems. In addition it discusses the potential benefits and problems for various antisense methods which complement gene knock-out experiments. The book includes antisense techniques such as: analysis of nucleic acid structures; measurement and evaluation of antisense effects; selection, preparation and the use of antisense oligonucleotides; in vitro RNA transcription; construction strategies, testing and optimization of catalytic antisense RNAs based on hammerhead ribozymes; synthesis and evaluation of 2-5 A- antisense chimeras for targeted degradation of RNA. The application of these technologies are then described, with chapters on antisense techniques in IDictyostelium, plants and the medical uses and benefits of antisense sense technology both in vitro and in vivo. Finally, non-antisense effects of oligonucleotides, "anti-sense rescue", shotgun antisense mutagenesis, and in vivo, in vitro and in situ detection of sense:antisense duplexes by structure-specific anti-RNA antibodies are discussed. The numerous hints and tips for success and advice on trouble shooting, make this authoritative text invaluable to all those researchers who work on gene expression, RNA transcription, or protein function.

Book Description
This is the proceedings of the XXXI Latin-American School of Physics. The focus is on New Perspectives on Quantum Mechanics. During three weeks of the School, lectures from leading physicists aimed to present a general overview of the current state-of-the-art of quantum physics, both from a theoretical and an experimental perspective. The contributions of the first part deal with quantum optics, modern techniques for atom cooling by means of lasers, atomic and ion traps, the manipulation of atoms in microcavities, and Bose-Einstein condensation. The emphasis was on experimental techniques related to fundamental phenomena predicted by quantum mechanics. In the second part, we find new theoretical methods for the study of quantum mechanics, tomographic methods, and alternative interpretations of quantum mechanics. The final part is a collection of topics of quantum mechanics: mesoscopic systems, several mathematical techniques, and quantum chaos.

Derik's a werewolf with alpha issues--and a body to die for.
Sara is the personification of unspeakable evil--and smells like roses.
Now if they could just stop drooling over each other long enough to save the world.
Customer Reviews:
A Fun Easy Read.......2007-07-02
This is a cute story. It is easy and quick to read. I love the way Mary Janice Davidson writes. If you love fun silly paranormal novels then this is your book. It is a romance novel but not your stereotypical romance novel.
funny fast read.......2007-06-03
This is a laugh out loud piece of fluff which I personally highly appreciate. It's not an easy feat to write something fast paced, hilarious and easy to read in one seating. I spent a very pleasant afternoon with it so bravo Ms Davidson. As for another reviewers' complaint that the end is not realistic, come on, you pick up a book about a werewolf and the reincarnation of Morgana le Fay and you want it to be believable ?????
Nurses and Monks and Werewolves...Oh, My!.......2007-05-14
I've not previously read a Wyndhma Werewolf Tale, so I came into DERIK'S BANE with no preconceptions. I enjoyed the story, the characters, and the typical MaryJanice Davidson wit, although I did find the ending (which happened in about two pages) a wee bit far-fetched.
Derik Gardner, hottie and member of the Wyndham Pack, has recently been feeling a little out of sorts. When he loses control one morning and gets into it with alpha Michael Wyndham (his leader and best friend since childhood), he realizes that something has to change.
And change they do. Derik has been informed that the reincarnation of Morgan La Fay, great sorceress and sister to King Arthur, not to mention historically believed to be a betrayer of a nation, has now taken the body of spunky, cute nurse with a doctorate Sara Gunn. His mission? "Take care of" Ms. Gunn, and prevent her from destroying the world.
Sara is a little perturbed by Derik's arrival on her doorstep, but no more so than she was by the guys in red monk's robes who tried to kill her at the hospital where she works later that day. It seems strange things are always happening to her, but her "luck", as she calls it, in turn causes weird things to happen to the bad guys.
As Derik attempts to take care of Sara by killing her, he realizes that he, superior body be damned, can't hurt her. So if you can't beat 'em, you join 'em, right? Sara and Derik set off cross-country to Salem, Massachusetts, where the sect of King Arthur resides, determined to save the world from destruction.
DERIK'S BANE is a fun, enjoyable read. In typical MJD style it's got passion, hilarious dialogue, a yummy hero, and a spunky heroine. What it lacks is a try believable ending (Sara KICKS the baddie to destroy it), but overall this is a fun way to spend an afternoon.
another good one.......2007-02-12
Another good one by MaryJanice Davidson. Warewolves and witches, what could be better?
This Rocks!.......2006-07-14
I loved this story, my first experience with the author, will be buying more. There were some odd\"yeah right" moments but the stories momentum sailed me past them. If you like fantasy\romance you'll probably dig this :)
