      Description:
The line-bisection task, adapted to utilise a wooden rod as the bisection stimulus, has revealed that patients with visuo-spatial neglect may be more accurate at bisection when asked to pick up the rod, compared to pointing to its centre. We recently reported that neurologically intact participants show a similar dissociation on this task-demonstrating a rightward bias when pointing to the centre, which was not present when grasping the rod by the centre. The current paper examined how pointing and grasping responses were affected by adapted rod-bisection tasks that emphasised local or global processing. In Experiment 1, 26 participants completed four rod-bisection tasks. The rods were compound stimuli and the participants directed to focus on either the local or global level. The results demonstrated that when participants focused on the global level, the previous dissociations found for pointing and grasping conditions were evident. However, the perception of centre did change when participants focused on the local level: both the pointing and grasping responses were rightward biased. In Experiment 2, 42 participants completed three bisection tasks which again emphasised either the local or global level, but in different sets of stimuli. The results of this task further support the findings in Experiment 1: the rightward bias in the local-bisection task was again evident and in addition, the global-bisection task resulted in no bias and no difference between the pointing and grasping bisections. These results demonstrate how task demands can similarly affect the pointing and grasping responses, and indicate that local and global processing may be involved in perception/action dissociations on rod bisection.

        Description:
Talent flow is a process whereby economically valuable individuals migrate between countries, and is arguably a more important global career influence than international flows of personnel within global organizations. In this article, we reject the term brain drain as too restrictive and focus on the psychology of migration, specifically the economic, political, cultural, family, and career forces motivating it. Boundaryless global careers are presented as individual phenomena combining into macro-level international effects. These talent flow concepts have HR policy implications at both national and organizational levels. In support of our arguments, we provide a case study of New Zealand, along with preliminary data from a large sample of New Zealand expatriates.

          Description:
The processing of global and local elements and of low- and high-spatial frequencies are thought to be interrelated. Evidence for this stems from findings showing that brain localizations for global/local elements and for low/high spatial frequencies seem to overlap. The present study aimed to provide direct evidence that topographical differences between the processing of global and local visual elements can directly be explained by their spatial frequency content, and to study at which point in time this relation is present. This was done by studying the event-related potentials (ERPs) and source models elicited by unfiltered, low- or high-pass filtered hierarchical stimuli. Results showed that performance for global and local targets was affected by removing low and high spatial frequencies, respectively. ERP data indicated that at 250 ms, there was an interaction between the processing of global/local targets and of spatial frequencies because at this time-point removal of low spatial frequencies decreased activity associated with the processing of global targets. When localizing this effect, we found evidence implying that spatial frequency content indeed affected the brain region in which local/global targets were processed. Results implicated that the processing of global information depended on its low spatial frequency content, which was processed more laterally. Instead, processing of local information seemed to depend on its high spatial frequency content, which was processed more medially. Thereby, present results extend former results showing that global and local processing is dependent on spatial frequency and mapped retinotopically in the visual cortex.

            Description:
Developmental prosopagnosia (DP) is a severe impairment in identifying faces that is present from early in life and that occurs despite no apparent brain damage and intact visual and intellectual function. Here, we investigated what aspects of face processing are impaired/spared in developmental prosopagnosia by examining a relatively large group of individuals with DP (n=8) using an extensive battery of well-established tasks. The tasks included measures of sensitivity to global motion and to global form, detection that a stimulus is a face, determination of its sex, holistic face processing, processing of face identity based on features, contour, and the spacing of features, and judgments of attractiveness. The DP cases showed normal sensitivity to global motion and global form and performed normally on our tests of face detection and holistic processing. On the other tasks, many DP cases were impaired but there was no systematic pattern. At least half showed deficits in processing of facial identity based on either the outer contour or spacing of the internal features, and/or on judgments of attractiveness. Three of the eight were impaired in processing facial identify based on the shape of internal features. The results show that DP is a heterogeneous condition and that impairment in recognizing faces cannot be predicted by poor performance on any one measure of face processing.

              Description:
In a semantic priming study, we investigated the processing of German-English homographs such as gift (German = ''poison'', English = ''present'') in sentence contexts using a joint reaction time (RT)/event-related brain potential (ERP) measure. Native German speakers with intermediate or advanced knowledge of English (N = 48) performed an all-L2 (English) experiment where sentences such as ''The woman gave her friend an expensive gift'' (control prime: item) were presented, followed by targets (i.e., boss) for lexical decision. To test the role of global task effects during sentence processing, we presented half the participants (N = 24) with a 20-min silent film narrated in German and half (N = 24) with the film in English before the experiment. To address the development of task effects over time, we analyzed the first and second blocks of the experiment. The results showed a significant interaction between semantic priming, movie version, and block in both the RTs and ERPs: there was significant semantic priming in the RTs and modulations in the N200 and N400 components only for participants who viewed the German movie, and only during the first block. Results suggest that in an all-L2 sentence task with L2 pre-task priming (English film), decision thresholds are raised high enough to eliminate measurable influence of the L1 on the L2. Despite identical material, participants who viewed the German film had to adjust, or zoom in, to the all-L2 task. Implications of this zooming in process in are discussed in terms of the recent Bilingual Interactive Activation (BIA+) model of bilingual word recognition [T. Dijkstra, W.J.B. Van Heuven, The architecture of the bilingual word recognition system: from identification to decision, Bilingualism: Lang. Cogn. 5 (2002) 175-197].

Harold Gaynor offers Anita Blake a million dollars to raise a 300-year-old zombie. Knowing it means a human sacrifice will be necessary, Anita turns him down. But when dead bodies start turning up, she realizes that someone else has raised Harold's zombie--and that the zombie is a killer. Anita pits her power against the zombie and the voodoo priestess who controls it. Notice to Hollywood: forget Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Anita Blake is the real thing.

                  Book Description

Now available in hardcover for the first time, The Laughing Corpse takes readers back to a time when Anita's life was a bit less complicated. As the best Animator in the business-she's as good at raising the dead as she is at slaying the undead-she crosses paths with a creature from beyond the grave, a super-powerful zombie who is tearing a swath of murder through the city. And she discovers that there are some secrets better left buried-and some people better left dead.

Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter for Animators, Inc., is offered a cool mil to raise a 283-year-old corpse. But she knows that "the older the zombie, the bigger the death needed to raise it". Only a human sacrifice is "big" enough to raise this old soul-and Anita's no murderer.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-08-29

So I needed a Vamp fix after Black Dagger Brotherhood (best series I have read so far action, drama, passion, romance ...the works). So I decided to check out Anita Blake, it was not what I expected there has been no romance, or steamy scenes of any kind so far Im on book 3....but I AM NOT disappointed the action and drama is fast paced. I love a cycnical kick @$$ chick. I bought the first 11 and intend to read them all. It's a great series, very gory, gritty, and abit scary I LUV it;)Hard to stop reading once you start!

                  4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-26

The laughing corpse is a dodgy club in a dodgy city.
A dodgy guy offers Anita a lot of cash to do a dodgy job. This job is to raise the dead in a way that is a no-no. She refuses, but someone else does it.

Then the dead bodies start turning up, and the police and Anita have to investigate. She still has human friends at the time, too.

                  1 out of 5 stars Wow........2007-08-12

I'm pretty sure this is the worst book I've ever read. I got the impression that she didn't really care if anyone read the book or not. Her complete lack of interest in anything literary, including storytelling, leaps from every page. I love genre fiction. Most of my favorite writers are not literary types. Plenty of them are writing outside the academic and formal literary boundaries. Laurell Hamilton doesn't seem to be writing at all. She just types out a list of stale paragraphs. Much of the time I couldn't tell what was going on in the story. Most of the time I didn't care. So boring that I lost track of sentences and began to feel as though I was reading a list of nouns verbs, adjectives and adverbs. I guess she has her fans, and I hope they're happy, but if, like me, you came to this book looking to try something different, keep trying.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-07-15

Anita is at her best when she's alone and knee high in grit and blood. Sounds gory? Well it is, but you'll love it. I'm only up to book four in the series and wasn't going to bother picking up the books after hearing word of mouth (and reviews) on the later books of the series. Before I even heard of Anita Blake, I was at the book store, I picked up DM (book 13 I think), read inside the dustjacket and was immediantly turned off. Anita sounded stupid. How was she a vampire hunter but also a woman who's pregnant, father, between a werewolf and a vampire. I passed. A year later I run across the cover of The Laughing Corpse and I HAD to read Guilty Pleasures to get to this book. Forget Guilty Pleasures. This book is the one! Circus of the Damned was cool but I still come back to this one. I just felt like it was me and Anita on this dark ride. No fancy vampires in between, nothing but zombies, more zombies, and zombies again. I loved all the characters presented (even Wanda). It read just like a detective novel with an edge. You really get into this story, it's so heavy and alluring you won't be able to put it down and just when you think it's over and she caught the monster - BAM - she's in a tight spot and goes all out with surprises that you wouldn't expect from her in order to survive. The last few chapers kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Took me two days to wrap this sucker and it went down as easy as pie. This story goes beyond the whole vampire hunter/animater thing. This is a flat out great mystery that I think anyone (with a stomach) could enjoy. I'm shaky about going deeper into the series, I think I heard after book 9 Anita turns flat, but I'll keep going until she burns me out with her need for constant sex with anybody. Huge turn off, switching genres. If anything PICK THIS BOOK UP for those of you who don't have it and aren't sure how you'll take the series. This book was IT!

5 out of 5 stars loved the laughing corpse.......2007-05-31

Even better than the first. This book is non-stop action, interesting all the way to the end. There are some gory crime scenes that Anita assists the police with (so i hope you have a good stomach)there are some good fight scenes and new nasty characters along with Jean-Claude who even though he is the "bad guy" and Master of the city I was still desperate to find out whether he and Anita hooked up. I love Anita's strong character and the fact that she will stand up to anyone. Trilling read. Can't wait to read Circus of the Damned.

                  4 out of 5 stars Fun!.......2007-09-09

I bought this series for my boyfriend and have found myself paging through it. Hamilton's novels are quite fun and full of action, which keeps the reader energized. However, those expecting these works to mirror Anne Rice will not be satisfied, as these novels lack the level of detail present in Anne Rice novels. They do of course concern themselves with vampires, so those fond of Anne Rice will have fun with these. Definitely worth the read!

                  3 out of 5 stars Bubble Gum.......2007-08-18

Bubble gum is not good for your teeth, but I chew it anyhow. I know it will satisfy a craving consistently. Like bubble gum, I cannot stop chewing up these books. It is primarily the sexual tension on the pages and the fact that I am a Buffy fan and need my vampire fix. The plots are formulaic, and Ms. Hamilton does need a better editor. "Alright," though used, is not really acceptable in formal text. In the third volume, Anita's car gets totaled, and then suddenly, she has a car again to follow someone to the million-year-old vampire's digs. I also cannot stand some of the author's phrases, such as "heap big vampire slayer." Quite possibly I cringe because no young woman would talk like this. As well, I have a hard time buying some of Anita's outfits. I was in my twenties in the late 90's, and I never would have worn the ensembles Anita wears. Thank God that Blake is taking some hints from the Master of the City. Granted the protagonist has bigger things on her mind; however, she dresses like the would-be love child of Richard Simmons and Minnie Pearl. There are some other typos and logical inconsistencies scattered throughout other books. All the things I just mentioned are "nitpicky," but some of them do stop me in my tracks as I am flying through the pages. I do not want to encounter sand when I am chewing my gum.

                  5 out of 5 stars Amazing books.......2007-06-27

Perfect! I finished this box set in less than a week. The books have excellent plots, detailed characters, and witty humor that have me laughing out loud. I made the mistake of getting one of the later books first and was so glad I started at the beginning. These books are fun and frisky. Definitely a recommended read for those who like action, romance, and refreshing characters.

5 out of 5 stars Got me Started.......2007-03-17

This 4-book set was the first I had read of the Anita Blake series. I have since ordered another 5 books from that series and will order the rest after I read those. These are really well written and move right along with interesting characters and plots.

5 out of 5 stars Anita Blake foursome...........2007-03-15

An omnibus edition of the first three Anita Blake novels. The dust jacket flap reads: "I'm Anita Blake, expert on creatures of the night. Vampires call me The Executioner. What I call them isn't repeatable. Ever since the Supreme Court granted the undead equal rights, most people think vampires are just ordinary folk with fangs. I know better. I've seen their victims. I carry the scars ... In my job -- I'm an animator; I raise the dead -- I've seen just about everything. I've dined with shapeshifters, danced with werewolves and been wooed, but not won, by Jean-Claude, the most powerful bloodsucker in St. Louis. When a serial killer started murdering vampires, it was Jean-Claude who wanted me to find the killer. Later, a rogue vamp named Alejandro hit town and wanted to make me his human servant. A war of the undead had begun. Over me. I'd have been flattered, if my life weren't at stake. Speaking of life ... and death ... every animator worth her salt knows that the older the zombie, the bigger the death needed to raise it. After a few centuries, the only death "big enough" is a human sacrifice. Now, I'm no assassin -- sure I kill vampires -- and I don't do it for the money -- but I don't kill people. Like I said, working for Animators, Inc. is just a job, like selling insurance. But all the money in the world wasn't enough for me to take on the particular job Harold Gaynor was offering. Somebody else did, though -- an insane animator. And he wasn't just raising the dead ... he was raising Hell. And it was up to me to stop it ...
