Phase Diagrams of the Elements
David A. Young Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0520074831 |
Book Description
The behavior of solid and liquid matter at high pressures and temperatures is best described in a phase diagram, which shows the regions of stability of different phases of the material. Thanks to the diamond-anvil cell, which has made possible much higher pressures, and to new and very accurate theoretical models and methods, Phase Diagrams of the Elements presents the most up-to-date information on the phase behavior of all the chemical elements from hydrogen to fermium.

Phase Transformations of Elements Under High Pressure (Advances in Metallic Alloys)
E. Yu Tonkov , and E.G. Ponyatovsky Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0849333679 |
Book Description
As laboratories replace heavy hydraulic presses and bulky high-pressure chambers with miniature diamond anvils, traditional heaters with laser heating, and continue to improve methods of shock compression, there has been considerable new data obtained from the high-pressure, high-temperature modification of pure elements. The dense metallic modification of elements shows the potential for achieving superconductivity akin to theoretical predictions. Phase Transformations of Elements Under High Pressure contains the latest theoretical and experimental information on nearly 100 elements, including first-and second-phase transitions, melting lines, crystal structures of stable and metastable phases, stability of polymorphic modifications, and other useful properties and data. It emphasizes features such as changes in the liquid state, amorphization, and metallization, and provides temperature-pressure diagrams for every element. The book also describes the transitions of polymeric forms of fullerene, crystal modifications of elements stable under high pressures, and provides data that confirms their superconducting and magnetic properties. This handbook will be a lasting reference for scientists in a broad range of disciplines, including solid-state physics, chemistry, crystallography, mineralogy, and materials science.

Elements and Binary Systems from Ag-AI to Au-TI (Landolt-Bornstein)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540653279 |
Book Description
Thermodynamic data, in conjunction with appropriate software for calculation of complex chemical equilibria, are finding wide application in many areas of materials design and development. In particular, the last 25 years have seen enormous advances in the thermodynamic modelling of alloy solution phases, whereby a knowledge of the underlying crystallographic structure of each phase is fundamental to a reliable representation of the thermodynamic properties and phase equilibria of a particular system of interest. With the aid of thermodynamic calculations, considerable time and costs can and are being saved in producing a material of the required composition and phase constitution required for a particular application. SGTE has been at the forefront in providing critically assessed thermodynamic data for alloy systems and has provided guidelines for the modelling of alloy phases of different types. Major advantages of the SGTE data are their self-consistency, the fact that they are produced with careful attention to a well-defined quality procedure and that the expertise of SGTE members in various areas of inorganic chemistry and materials science allows review of the numbers by highly qualified scientists in the fields concerned.

Rare Earth Elements, Alloys and Compounds (Landolt-Bornstein Numerical Data and Functional Relationships in Science and Technology - New Series)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540428577 |
Book Description
Volume 32 of Group III is a supplement to volume III/19 and deals with the magnetic properties of metals, alloys and metallic compounds which contain at least one transition element.
The present subvolume III/32D deals with the magnetic properties of rare earth elements (section 2.1), as well as with alloys and compounds of rare earth elements either with 4d or 5d elements (section 2.5) or with Be, Mg, Zn, Cd or Hg (section 2.7). Each section provides an introduction and a list of references, and allows an easy overview of the substances discussed in it either through a special survey (sections 2.1 and 2.5) or a sensible subdivision of the material according to groups of substances and surveys compiled for each group individually (chapter 2.7).

Ternary lanthanide chalcogenides, misfit compounds, and ternary lanthanide pnictides containing s- or p-electron elements
T. Palewski , and W. Suski Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540429972 |
Book Description
The volume is part of the series III/27, that covers magnetic properties of non-metallic inorganic compounds based on transition elements. The subvolumes III/27B are to cover all the lanthanide pnictides and lanthanides chalcogenides. The present volume 27B5 is divided into three chapters, each comprising a survey, figures and tables, and a list of references. The first chapter, dealing with ternary lanthanide chalcogenides based on transition metals (d-electron elements), continues the preceding subvolume B4. The last chapter includes the other ternary lanthanide chalcogenides, i.e. those based on s-, p- or f-electron elements, as well as ternary lanthanide pnictides. The intermediate chapter is made up of misfit compounds, i.e. ternary lanthanide chalcogenides with a layered crystal structure.

No punches are pulled in Henry Miller's most famous work. Still pretty rough going for even our jaded sensibilities, but Tropic of Cancer is an unforgettable novel of self-confession. Maybe the most honest book ever written, this autobiographical fiction about Miller's life as an expatriate American in Paris was deemed obscene and banned from publication in this country for years. When you read this, you see immediately how much modern writers owe Miller.Book Description

Henry Miller Manufacturer: Grove Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0802138438 |
Book Description
Forty years have passed since Grove Press first published Henry Miller's landmark masterpiece -- an act that would forever change the face of American literature. Initially banned in America as obscene, Tropic of Cancer was first published in Paris in 1934. Only a historic court ruling that changed American censorship standards permitted its publication. Tropic of Cancer is now considered, as Norman Mailer said, "one of the ten or twenty great novels of our century." Also banned in America for almost thirty years, Tropic of Capricorn is now considered a cornerstone of modern literature. Together, Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn are a lasting testament to one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century and his contribution not only to literature but to the cause of free speech.
