Thermodynamic data, in conjunction with appropriate software for calculation of complex chemical equilibria, are finding wide application in many areas of materials design and development. In particular, the last 25 years have seen enormous advances in the thermodynamic modelling of alloy solution phases, whereby a knowledge of the underlying crystallographic structure of each phase is fundamental to a reliable representation of the thermodynamic properties and phase equilibria of a particular system of interest. With the aid of thermodynamic calculations, considerable time and costs can and are being saved in producing a material of the required composition and phase constitution required for a particular application. SGTE has been at the forefront in providing critically assessed thermodynamic data for alloy systems and has provided guidelines for the modelling of alloy phases of different types. Major advantages of the SGTE data are their self-consistency, the fact that they are produced with careful attention to a well-defined quality procedure and that the expertise of SGTE members in various areas of inorganic chemistry and materials science allows review of the numbers by highly qualified scientists in the fields concerned.

Volume 32 of Group III is a supplement to volume III/19 and deals with the magnetic properties of metals, alloys and metallic compounds which contain at least one transition element.
The present subvolume III/32D deals with the magnetic properties of rare earth elements (section 2.1), as well as with alloys and compounds of rare earth elements either with 4d or 5d elements (section 2.5) or with Be, Mg, Zn, Cd or Hg (section 2.7). Each section provides an introduction and a list of references, and allows an easy overview of the substances discussed in it either through a special survey (sections 2.1 and 2.5) or a sensible subdivision of the material according to groups of substances and surveys compiled for each group individually (chapter 2.7).

The first chapter, dealing with ternary lanthanide chalcogenides based on transition metals (d-electron elements), continues the preceding subvolume B4. The last chapter includes the other ternary lanthanide chalcogenides, i.e. those based on s-, p- or f-electron elements, as well as ternary lanthanide pnictides. The intermediate chapter is made up of misfit compounds, i.e. ternary lanthanide chalcogenides with a layered crystal structure.

i was working in a half-way house for the chronically mentally ill and was reading this during down time. a really manic resident snatched it out of my hand in the crowded kitchen one day and began to read it outloud. quickly all the schizophrenics and manics looked at me like i was really nuts. that alone should stand as an endorsement.

...my spiritual liberation started with Henry Miller and _Tropic of Cancer_.
I always credit him with "saving my life" and don't think this an exaggeration. As a troubled, near suicidal 15 year old, I saw _Tropic of Cancer_ on the bookshelf of my next door neighbor's - whose dog I was walking while they were away - and dove in hoping to find what reports of the obscenity trial in the New York Times would lead me to find - I was 15 and anxious for "obscenity".
No doubt, I found obscenity, but mostly I found courage! gobs of it - and joy - the courage to be who I was and just go for it - everything and everyone else be damned!
For the next decade or so, not two weeks would go buy when I wasn't reading Miller: the Topics, Black Spring, Sexus/Nexus/Plexus, The Colossus of Maroussi, Big Sur, and on and on, re-reading - but although they all recharged the joy (not to mention my vocabulary, he read the dictionary as a youth and remembered everything), nothing matched the impact of _Tropic of Cancer_.
Yes - Miller's pretentious, narcissistic and misogynistic, but he's also filled with a contagious spirit. His later works - particularly _Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch_ are more focused on true spirituality. By his late 50's he finally got the sexual obsession and misogyny under control, the earlier works are too focused on lust.
Great stuff for a 15 year old boy though! - wonderful and graphic sex scenes are interspersed with lyricism, erudition and the great joy of being alive ...no matter what...
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to any 15 year old or 50 year old...

I have to admit part of what attracted me to the book and held my attention was keeping in mind the time period it was written in. I was a bit shocked even by today's standards and I can see why it was banned for many years. Just for having the balls to write a book of that brashness in that time period; it is worth checking out.
When it comes to storyline, I was less interested in his large lessons on life he was trying to teach than the story itself. I choose to read it simply as a tale of a traveler and glossed over the muddy insights. In my opinion they didn't seem to have a place.
I have a friend who has hitch-hiked across America, and at times hopped freight trains to travel. Needless to say she's had some unusual experiences. When reading this I thought of her and her stories.
Great writer, great novel.......2006-10-14
It might be filth and shame, but these fictional confessions of
sort are funny and highly poetic. There's no need of plot or character
development to really enjoy the story right from the start. Henry Miller
may seem like trash to some because of the miserable theme in the novel,
but the way is told is very colorful and truly unique.

Get The Revised Edition.......2005-04-19
Took a chance on the ebook, as the title is ridiculously cheap.
Message at the front says "Revised, March 2005"--so if you're getting it from a marketplace seller or something, be sure they have the right version.
I can remember first picking up a paperbound trilogy by Mr. Miller some 20 years, an old Grove PB from the '60s. Loved it, and it keeps speaking to me to this very day.
Four stars because the text is marked up in the French manner, and it can be a little hard to deal with all the angle quotes and such.
Did buy the paperback as well, and love carrying all three around with me.

The collection of three of Miller's greatest works in volume looked too good to be true. It was. Miller's great, brusque voice is here, but the production quality of the volume is very low. The text contains far too many errors, as if it were transcribed with no proofread prior to press. Buy another edition from a more reputable company.
