Book Description
An introduction to the evolution and adaptation of amphibians and reptiles, bridging the gulf between the plethora of 'popular' books and the more advanced texts directed towards the needs of specialist research workers, thus making it accessible to advanced students worldwide. Basic principles are explained in non-technical terms, and the adaptive responses to natural selection which have engendered the diversity of forms that exist in the fossil record and are found in the world today are covered. The book also includes the extinct forms such as dinosaurs, ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs. In the concluding chapter, relationships with mankind and the preservation of diversity are discussed.

Fans often feel uneasy when the creator of a popular character ventures into new turf, and sometimes their trepidation is justified. But readers of Robert B. Parker's immensely popular Spenser series can breathe a sigh of relief: while Night Passage doesn't feature Spenser, his usual gang of associates, or a Boston setting, it's vintage Parker--fast, witty, suspenseful, and engaging. Told in short, crisp chapters, it's the story of Jesse Stone, a 34-year-old ex-cop who just lost his L.A. policeman's job and his marriage due to a drinking problem. The book opens as Stone leaves California for his new job as chief of police in the picturesque town of Paradise, Massachusetts.
But Paradise isn't as placid as it seems--in fact, it's a festering mass of petty corruption, right-wing militia, sexual scandal, and bad guys who favor strong-arm tactics. Night Passage boasts a delicious, classic setup: the lone lawman, new in town, must make his stand to clean the place up. Stone has been picked for the job because the town fathers figured he'd be weak and malleable; as he gradually pulls himself together, it turns out they have a surprise in store. Stone's qualities may remind you of Spenser's--he's taciturn, fearless, good-looking, and compassionate--and in the end the plot's pleasing complexities get resolved a bit simply. But Robert B. Parker is in fine form in Night Passage, with his smart-aleck wit under control and his prose at its economical best. Spenser fans and Parker neophytes alike will find plenty to enjoy here. And the setting is, after all, not far from Boston--dare we hope for a Spenser-Stone meeting in future books?
Book Description
The author of two dozen Spenser novels as well as numerous other works of fiction, Robert B. Parker is no stranger to either critical or popular acclaim. With his hallmark sharp wit and taut action, Parker has created in the Spenser series the standard against which all contemporary detective novels are measured, and a character considered the paragon of private eyes. In Night Passage, Parker sets the bar even higher, with the introduction of Jesse Stone, a hero cut from different cloth.
After a busted marriage kicks his drinking problem into overdrive and the LAPD unceremoniously dumps him, the thirty-five-year-old Stone's future looks bleak. So he's shocked when a small Massachusetts town called Paradise recruits him as police chief. He can't help wondering if this job is a genuine chance to start over, the kind of offer he can't refuse.
Once on board, Jesse doesn't have to look for trouble in Paradise: it comes to him. For what is on the surface a quiet New England community quickly proves to be a crucible of political and moral corruption--replete with triple homicide, tight Boston mob ties, flamboyantly errant spouses, maddened militiamen and a psychopath-about-town who has fixed his violent sights on the new lawman. Against all this, Jesse stands utterly alone, with no one to trust; even he and the woman he's seeing are like ships that pass in the night. He finds he must test his mettle and powers of command to emerge a local hero--or the deadest of dupes.
As the flagship volume in a new series featuring a complex and engaging sleuth, Night Passage is cause for celebration.

Jesse Stone's First Appearance.......2007-09-11
This is the first in a series of books by Robert Parker that introduces Jesse Stone. Many times you hear....ah, the book was better then the movie, etc. Well...in this case the TV Movie was even Better...then this book! For maybe two reasons....Tom Selleck plays Jesse Stone and the Screenplay adapter made the book even Better...for the movie. I really LOVE this character Jesse Stone and I love all the Office staff he works with. I love Paradise, Massachusettes. I am a big fan of the way Robert Parker writes. He is just very honest and lays it all out there for you. Does not fill his books full of unnecessary facts and frills and does not go on and on like Steven King's books. (although I like many of his books too). And his rich character of Jesse Stone is easy for me to envision and read about.(makes me wish I knew them in real life.) And even more wonderful for me to see in Tom Selleck on the tv movies.(he's one of my very favorite actors). So for the book introduction of Jesse Stone and all the rich characters he meets and deals with on a daily basis....I say...Thank You....Robert Parker...for "Night Passage" and hope you write many, many more with Jesse Stone.
Deceipt in Paradise.......2007-09-04
Jesse Stone, an alcoholic fired from his police job in L.A., is hired by the town selectman of Paradise, MA to be their new Chief of Police. Hasty Hathaway, who runs the town and a militia with the secret mission of wiping out everyone who is not a white Christian, thinks Jesse will be a pushover to control since he's a drunk. Besides drinking, Jesse is pulling the pieces of his life together after divorce, dealing with the town bully and wondering how a town, that should be a quiet haven, has three murders that seem related to his new job. Excitement builds as three men jockey for position in a town that only has room for one of them.
Though Robert B Parker goes all over the place with point-of-view, this book is a page turner with short chapters, loads of character in Chief Jesse Stone, a colorful dirty town and the reader always wondering how he'll handle the next set of trouble that lands at his feet. Excellent. I can't wait to get started on the next one in the series.
Strong start to a new Parker series.......2007-08-16
This book introduces us to Jesse Stone, a somewhat damaged man who has left the LAPD in disgrace after turning to booze to dampen the pain of his ex-wife's cheating. He has been hired on as chief of police for the town of Paradise, Mass. and the beginning of the book goes back and forth between him driving across the country and ruminating on his past, and the machinations of the town selectmen of Paradise, who are taking part in some sort of cover-up which has included bundling off the old police chief and bringing in Stone - who they hope, as a drunk, will be ineffectual. It turns out that bank owner and head selectman Hasty Hathaway is involved in a money laundering scheme with Gino Fish, using muscleman Jo Jo Genest as an intermediary. However, when Jesse has a run-in with Jo Jo early on, making an enemy of him, Jo Jo realizes that there is more to Jesse than was expected - Hasty at first prefers not to believe this. Jesse begins to poke around at the town's edges, discovering that Hasty also runs a militia he calls Freedom's Horsemen with Lon Burke - who is a high-ranking member of the police force and had been acting police chief until Jesse took over. When the former police chief is murdered in Wyoming during the same time Lon just happened to be taking a trip to Denver, Jesse's worst fears are crystallized.
I was very impressed with this new series from Parker. I love how Parker interweaves the points of views from both Jesse and the various antagonists. I enjoyed the by-plays between Gino Fish, Jo Jo, Hasty and Vinnie especially. I am looking forward to seeing where this series goes and am glad that I decided to follow through on getting all the Parker series. A definite must-have for fans of detective stories, police procedurals, Robert Parker or a well-plotted mystery!
An Entertaining and Promising Beginning.......2007-07-30
I started reading the Spenser novels because the Spenser: For Hire tv series got me interested. A Catskill Eagle was my first Spenser and from there I worked my way back and forth in the series over the next several years. I think I read about the first 25 or so before I lost enthusiasm. I grew tired of the characters (Spenser, Hawk, Susan) who stopped developing, the uninspired mysteries and the cut and paste dialogue. Even the humor lacked the snap of the Spenser of the first 15-20 books. Granted, its hard to maintain creativity with a single protagonist over 30+ years and as many books. Spenser novels have never been heavy lifting, literature wise but even by the relaxed standards of mystery writing, I got the sense Parker was just going through the motions. If the author doesn't care, why should I? Until I read Night Passage a couple of weeks ago, I hadn't read a Parker book of any sort in five or six years.
I'm guessing Robert B. Parker may have been just as tired of Spenser as myself. While not yet ready to kill off or retire Spenser and crew, in the last several years he has supplimented his yearly Spenser novel with three new series. Jesse Stone (a young Spenser type), Sunny Randall (a woman) and a series of westerns. I thought a change of pace from an author who is a known quantity might be a light fun read and I was right.
Night Passage is our introduction to Jesse Stone. A big city ex-cop who was fired for drinking, still drinks and has a strange, unhealthy relationship with his narcisstic ex wife who he unable to let go or be with. Jenn's selfishness and blank-faced disinterest in Jesse's say in their relationship makes Susan Silverman look like the very soul of emotional generosity by comparison. Stone is the same knight in dented armor as Spenser but without the maturity, self confidence or wicked sense of humor. Spenser is very thoughtful but would never be caught dead feeling sorry for himself the way Jesse pouts about his ruined baseball career, his ruined police career, his divorce, and his drinking. Jesse is introduced as kind of a work in progress. A redeemable loser. This is probably a good thing because it gives Parker plenty to work with as far as developing Stone's character. Stone is just as much of a tough guy who bleeds on the inside as Spenser. Parker seems to have an affinity for protagonists who are a cross between Dirty Harry and Hawkeye Pierce. Their heart on the sleeve and a gun in their hand. Not very realistic but fun to cheer for.
I read Night Passage in one day. Mostly dialogue and short, simple chapters. The book opens with a cross country trip & is a great way to introduce our new hero. He gets to Paradise and immediately smells a rat. Small town corruption reigns. The mystery itself is pretty asinine and poorly developed. Peyton's Place with guns. Some mumbo jumbo about a bunch of white trash rascists posing as militiamen, playing war games and trying to run the small town of Paradise, Mass. Spare me. These bozos couldn't organize a barbeque without burning down the town. Stone does his best Wyatt Earp imitation and takes out the trash. Hopefully, Parker will find some genuine challenges for his new hero. All said, Night Passage is a quick, fun read and a breath of fresh air from an old master.
From Sea to Shining Sea With Stately Grace and a few Black Label "hic"s.......2007-07-26
Possibly as Parker intended, at first I felt sad to be reading a character without Spenser's philosophy of life and inner strength, though the read baited curiosity in all the right ways and places. The plot took off and continued with a smooth, deep, almost silent style. I enjoyed the easy way Parker showed Jesse's slips into memories of Jennifer (using a simple technique of ...) as he drove across the USA on Route 66, LA to Paradise, Massachusetts.
Jesse Stone seemed like a young Spenser maneuvering through a few less bright choices than Spenser might have made, showing how Stone's choices dimmed his path. Thankfully, Stone wasn't totally stoned, hadn't abandoned his heart. He seemed to be living on a precipice of dynamically balanced shadow and light. I liked his quiet, stately strength and self-acceptance.
His relationships in his new setting as Police Chief developed in easy, slow ways, and sometimes I saw kaleidoscopes of past books I've reviewed in the Spenser series, shifting bold bits of color chips into NIGHT PASSAGE, this pilot for the Jesse Stone series. I attempted to place Tom Selleck into the story as Jesse, which was easy to do, even though I haven't seen any of the movies (no TV connection on the mesa in rural Colorado where we've been living temporarily for 3 years).
I enjoyed the way Jesse worked into solid relationships with men working for him, establishing respect with an easy flow. Reminding me of SCHOOL DAYS (# 33 Spenser, copyright 2005, which might have been an out-slip from this part of NIGHT PASSAGE), the exchange between Jesse and the teen girl, Michelle Merchant, was especially telling of his mind-set, and skills of connecting with the most stubborn of stuck.
It was interesting to wonder if some scenes had Parker itching to step in Spenser to tell Jesse how to deal with various issues, especially his booze and relationships with Jenn and new women in his life. I enjoyed the inclusion of Spenser characters, Dr. St. Clare, Vinnie Morris, and Gino Fish.
About 3/4 into the novel, when I stepped into chapter 56 with the dance at The Yacht Club, a nag which had been percolating surfaced fully. I had been conscious of it for several chapters, and when I reached The Yacht Club dance I realized how I might determine if the nag had truth in it. Even though this novel was as good as any in the Spenser series, I had begun to sense that the style difference from that series was so dramatic, and felt so youthful, beyond the fact that Jesse Stone is a younger, quieter character than Spenser... I had begun to sense that NIGHT PASSAGE may have been written close to 1970, five years prior to the Spenser pilot, THE GODWULF MANUSCRIPT:
One of Parker's signatures has been to incorporate a variety of "cultural icons" which were running concurrent with his early-draft writing phases, including how people dressed (for success or lack of it), talked, and thought: When did we began recommending to get shrunk, when did feminism take a surge, etc. The most tasty and telling cultural icons in Parker's writing, though, are those describing what people are eating, how his characters nurture themselves, what they think about what's culinarily good or bad (when did coffee get a bad name; when did orange-bottomed-decaff-pots begin joining back-bottomed "regulars" in restaurants).
All of the above icons were present, though not yet accounted for, in NIGHT PASSAGE. Most of them, from my memories, were at their heated, primed stages in the late 60's early 70's. But, what topped off my identification of that time period was the banquet table at The Yacht Club dance: When did crock pots become popular? When did we begin serving "Nuts and Bolts" at parties, that concoction of mixed cereals which we made from scratch, baking it after spraying with oil, sprinkling on salt and Kraft grated Parmesan cheese? When did we use Campbell's soup for many of our sauces or flavorings for casserole's and such?
Think about this as you read the detailed description of that banquet table, because there's much more than noted above.
On the other hand (in the other pot), possibly NIGHT PASSAGE was merely set in the time period indicated, yet was written near the copyright date of 1997?
Either way, this is an excellent novel and a perfect start of a new series. I look forward to noting cultural cons and icons spicing the pages of subsequent novels in this series. Mostly, I look forward to savoring each (the stories and their icons).
Are we what we eat, how we talk, dress, and think? If so, Robert B. Parker has captured us gloriously in the act of all of it, through my favorite series (now two) of novels in classic literature. No, I didn't say private eye genre. Parker uses that genre beautifully, but his books are true classics within the annals of cultural conversations. His novels have subtly stepped beyond any literary fence.
Sacred Are The Signs of Our Times (maybe cows, too)?

greatness all around.......2007-08-06
The R.A Salvatore books for the Drow series is the first books i ever pick up and read. Me not being a reader thought i would never sit a read a book on its entirity, well i was wrong. since the very fist books i just kept reading. Salvatore puts the material in such a vivid way that you get involve in the story and you feel each character and their way of life since i started i read 9 books and working on my ten book. Thats how great the books are i Would recomend to everyone but specially to those people who think they will never read. Last i would like to say i hope that you soon be enjoying the books They're Greatness all aroundLegacy of the Drow Gift Set: The Legacy, Starless Night, Siege of Darkness, and Passage to Dawn (Forgotten Realms: Legacy of the Drow)
Legacy of the Drow.......2007-05-31
"As an old school gamer I dislike so many things that occur in these books, but this is some of the best sword & sorcery reading you will find. This is the 2nd or 3rd trilogy dealing with these characters. The imagination that went into creating the Ecology of the twisted society of the underdark is simply mind blowing."
Drow Gift Set.......2007-01-14
I was pleased at the condition of my order, and the speed which it reached me.
Drizzt.......2003-11-05
I'm guessing most people who are thinking of buying this are already familiar with the author, or perhaps have already read all four books.
If you haven't, then here's what you need to know. These four books center around a good-aligned drow elf named Drizzt, who is now wandering the surface of Faerun. If you've never read about Drizzt before, be advised that these four books are not first in chronological order of Drizzt's life; you'll be given some backstory to understand who Drizzt is, but you'll also know pretty much everything that happened in all the earlier novels, which may lessen your enjoyment of them when you eventually read them. I say "when" rather than "if" because it seems to me that if you approach these novels without an anti-Drizzt or anti-Salvatore mindset, you will love them, and you will go buy all the others.
I'm not going to write out a play-by-play of events in the book, since you can look them each up individually and get plenty of information from other posters. I give these 4 books a total of 5 stars; some are better than others, but none rank below a 3.
As a sidenote, if you are buying this as a gift for someone, you might want to know that they are set in the Forgotten Realms, which is a unique world, NOT a generic fantasy world. I would not purchase this set as a gift for someone unless I already knew that they were familiar with the Forgotten Realms world. It's too complex a place to approach in the middle of a series without understanding the world at least to some degree.

Passage By Night.......2000-10-26
When I started to read Passage By Night I wasn't really into the story, but I kept on reading on. As I got towards the middle I realized the book was really intresting. I never would of thought to finish this book, but here I am telling you about this great book I read and encouraging you to read it. I enjoyed reading this book because Jack Higgens wrote this book with lots of mysteries to think about and for you to keep on reading. This book shows what a person can do for their loves death, for xample revenge. If you ever have a chance to read this book I know you'll enjoy it. To me this book can not be compared with other books I have read because I never would of thought a book could be this intresting.

Riveting. .......2007-07-02
I am a reading intervention teacher for 1st-3rd graders. I read a lot. So far, my favorite book has been "Last To Die," by James Grippando. I rate it a 10 of 10, and have not read anything nearly comparable until "Night Passage." Wow. The author had me all throughout the story. At several points, I thought I finally had it figured out. Nope. I love a book that hooks me and makes me think. This is certainly one that I will recommend to others. I was soooo hooked, I finished it in six hours. It really was a fantastically crafted tale.
This Book Rocks!.......2003-12-18
This is the first story I read by Carol and it hooked me for life! I originally bought this book because I liked the cover and the blurb on the back sounded interesting. I was quite surprised at how good it was. From that point on, I searched high and low for her books and now have the complete set. The story gives the reader a good feel for what Nevada is really like when you get away from Las Vegas, especially with the many mining towns that are scattered throughout the state. Great characters, high suspense, and a plot that kept me guessing right until the end. This book is now out in electronic form and is well worth it if you cannot get the paperback. Highly recommended.
Excellent book it gives you a real feel of Nevada........1998-08-23
If you have never read any of Ms. Luce's books this is a good one to start on. Like all of her books the keep you moving and you can't wait to finish but when your done your disappointed because it was so good you didn't want it to end. The book gives you a true feel for small town Nevada. I just wish she would hurry up and write another book.
