Book Description

NMR spectroscopy is the most valuable and versatile analytical tool in chemistry. While excellent monographs exist on high-resolution NMR in liquids and solids, this is the first book to address multidimensional solid-state NMR. Multidimensional techniques enable researchers to obtain detailed information about the structure, dynamics, orientation, and phase separation of solids, which provides the basis of a better understanding of materials properties on the molecular level.Dramatic progress-much of it pioneered by the authors-has been achieved in this area, especially in synthetic polymers. Solid-state NMR now favorably competes with well-established techniques, such as light, x-ray, or neutron scattering, electron microscopy, and dielectric and mechanical relaxation.
The application of multidimensional solid-state NMR inevitably involves use of concepts from different fields of science. This book also provides the first comprehensive treatment of both the new experimental techniques and the theoretical concepts needed in more complex data analysis. The text addresses spectroscopists and polymer scientists by treating the subject on different levels; descriptive, technical, and mathematical approaches are used when appropriate. It presents an overview of new developments with numerous experimental examples and illustrations, which will appeal to readers interested in both the information content as well as the potential of solid-state NMR. The book also contains many previously unpublished details that will be appreciated by those who want to perform the experiments. The techniques described are applicable not only to the study of synthetic polymers but to numerous problems in solid-state physics, chemistry, materials science, and biophysics.

Key Features
* Presents original theories and new perspectives on scattering techniques
* Provides a systematic treatment of the whole subject
* Gives readers access to previously unpublished material
* Includes extensive illustrations

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good reference book.......2005-03-11

Definitely a very comprehensive textbook which treats many relevant and modern advances in the field. A must-have for every researcher in solid state NMR. Downside is that the book is written in the style of a reference book, and not really good as teaching material. But overall I give it 4 stars. Michael Mehring's book on solid state nmr is still the best teaching manual to learn the theory.

5 out of 5 stars highly recommended.......2001-06-27

One of the best books on solid-state NMR currently published. The authors present a thorough overview of theory of solids NMR with the focus on applications in polymer science. Would be one of my first choices for a graduate level textbook in solid-state NMR. Targeted at an intermediate reader familiar with the basic concepts of NMR. Highly recommended

            Book Description

In polymer science and technology, the advanced development of various new polymer materials with excellent properties and functions is desirable. For this purpose it is necesary to determine the exact relationship between physical properties and molecular structure-dynamics with powerful techniques. One such technique is solid state NMR. Recently, high resolution NMR studies of solids have been realized by using advanced pulse and mechanical techniques, which has resulted in a variety of structural and dynamical information on polymer systems. Solid state NMR has provided characteristic information which cannot be obtained by other spectroscopic methods.

This book is divided into two parts. The first part covers the principles of NMR, important NMR parameters such as chemical shifts, relaxation times, dipolar interactions, quadrupolar interactions, pulse techniques and new NMR methods. In the second part, applications of NMR to a variety of polymer systems in the solid state are described.

            Features of this book:

            • Contains an up-to-date and comprehensive account of solid state NMR of polymers by leading researchers in the field

            • Provides a compilation of solid state NMR of polymers, which makes it an ideal reference book for both NMR researchers and general polymer scientists.

This book will be of interest to the NMR community, and will be invaluable for both the beginner and the expert.

From the author: The polymorphism of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its nanocomposites was studied by means of solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. [.sup.13.C] cross polarization magic angle spinning ([.sup.13.C] CP MAS) NMR spectra were recorded using simultaneous high-power decoupling on both the proton and fluorine channels. Both [.sup.1.H] [right arrow] [.sup.13.C] and [.sup.19.F] [right arrow] [.sup.13.C] CP experiments were conducted, giving identical results apart from intensity variations due to the CP efficiency. Two main resonances for the C[F.sub.2] and the C[H.sub.2] groups were observed for both neat PVDF (PVDF-C0) and the nanocomposite containing 2 wt% clay (PVDF-C2) samples. [.sup.19.F] CP MAS spectra were obtained from long proton spin-lock experiments with a shorter contact time. The results showed two strong resonances at -84 and -98 ppm with equal intensities, representing the [alpha]-form crystalline structure of PVDF. It was shown that the clay induces the crystallization of PVDF in [beta]-form. Our earlier investigations using thermal analysis and X-ray scattering methods also showed crystal transformation of PVDF in its clay nanocomposites. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 46: 1684-1690, 2006. 1 out of 5 stars erotica -not romance.......2007-07-23

This book was the first and last that I'll read by the author. Nothing new in the plot. Girl in trouble. Hero to hide her and convince her he loves her. But, from the first page, our "virgin" is having very erotic dreams and these explicit scenes continue throughout the book. Not much depth. I wouldn't recommend reading unless you are "just reading for the sex".

2 out of 5 stars teenagerish fantasy trash.......2007-05-24

I love books about sexy Highlanders! However, Derek was not. First of all, it was impossible to pin down the time frame or era of the story. Then the story was so superficial that I really had a tough time figuring it out. It seemed like it was a teenager's dream diary instead of a novel. Both Derek and Rosalyn were always thinking about having sex, even when their carriage broke down and almost went over a cliff. When Rosalyn was so immature as to race a horse that was strange to her over terrain that was equally strange, she got what she deserved..... she got thrown when the horse injured itself. But low and behold, as Derek carried her on his horse before him, she was thinking what it would be like to stroke his hard staff instead of how much her ankle hurt or her body ached from being thrown from the horse!

I've only made it halfway through this book and right now I'm thinking I won't be able to make it to the end. It's far too painful to read. Oh yes, there IS a story in there somewhere, isn't there? Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars THE HIGHLANDER'S STOLEN BRIDE is the third installment in Melanie George's PLEASURE SEEKERS series. .......2007-01-27

Lady Rosalyn Carmichael has been forced into hiding from her stepbrother, Calder. His plot to gain her portion of the inheritance has Rosalyn frightened not just for herself, but for anybody that aids her as well. Despite misgivings and erotic fantasies, she accepts Derek's offer of protection and accompanies him to his Scottish castle.

Derek Hardwicke is a Scottish highland laird. Because of his father's disastrous marriage to an English woman, Derek's clan expects him to marry a Scottish lass. He's not prepared for the intensity of his reaction to Rosalyn and is determined not to act on it. He offers her his protection and the safety of his castle. Keeping his hands off Rosalyn may prove to be too much for him though, especially once she makes her sexual desires known.

Deep into her dream about Derek, Rosalyn is rudely wakened by a foul man standing over her bed demanding that she get up. Calder has once again found her. Refusing to endanger her friends, Rosalyn is about to go quietly with Calder's hired thug when her bedroom door bursts open and Derek thwarts the attempted abduction. He wouldn't have been there at all if he hadn't become restless and ventured toward where she was staying with his friend, Clarisse. Clarisse is a very smart woman and she realizes that Rosalyn needs protection, and Derek is just the man for the job. His castle is in a remote area of Scotland. It'd be the perfect solution to alleviate the threat from Calder. When Derek catches Rosalyn packing her bags, preparing to leave with no place to go, he tells her to finish packing, he's taking her to Scotland with him. Derek has plenty of problems of his own, some of them Rosalyn's presence will compound, but he refuses to leave her in the care of others.

THE HIGHLANDER'S STOLEN BRIDE is the third installment in Melanie George's PLEASURE SEEKERS series. While the word "Highlander" gracing the cover of this book attracted me, it was Rosalyn's boldness in her sexual desires that enthralled me. Combine that with a fantastic plot, emotionally charged situations, and characters that you can't decide whether to love or hate and you have a truly delightful storyline. I knew that Calder wouldn't give up on getting to Rosalyn, but the way he went about it is so appallingly devious and unexpected that it's a stroke of genius. Derek's major problems are all very mysterious, until a secret his father left behind is revealed. I'm fascinated by Derek's illegitimate half-brother, Ethan. He's all bad boy one minute and savior the next. I'm really hoping to see more of him in a future book. THE HIGHLANDER'S STOLEN BRIDE is a book I'm sure readers' will enjoy from the very first page to the last.

4 out of 5 stars Loved the Derek character; very sexy romance.......2007-01-08

I found the title a little confusing because Megan is the one who gets stolen but the book is really about Roslyn and Derek. Derek is perhaps my all-time favorite romantic hero.

Derek is a very appealing character in contrast to the sterotypical alpha male hero who is typically served up in these types of novels. He is caring, sensitve and vulnerable while still being extremely masculine and actually listens to and genuinely cares for Roslyn. He desires her but stops himself from making love to her about three times before he finally gives into his desires (and only after she tells him she wants to be his lover).

Most heroes promise not to hurt tender young virgins their first time, but few ever succeed in not hurting them. Derek comes up with a clever way not to hurt Roslyn by giving her control and genuinely wants to make her first time exceptional; he succeeds in spades. He also gives her numerous opportunities to back out, before he finally makes love to her. His main concern is that she will later hate him if he takes her viginity.

Derek falls in love with Roslyn but she rejects him after he proposes marriage because she believes she can't have children. At this point, I just wanted to smack her. Here you have a gorgeous, sensitive man who worships you and wants to spend his life making you happy and you reject him coldly and without explanation because you THINK you can't have children? What if he doesn't care and don't you at the very least owe him some sort of an explantion?

It's only because of the obtuse heroine that this book didn't receive 5 stars.

The sex scenes were very well written and incredibly sensual.

5 out of 5 stars Erotic and sexy, but not overdone. Bravo!.......2006-05-15

I've seen that some authors are writing hotter books, and having met a few I know that many of them are forced (or strongly suggested) by their publishing houses to write steamier novels. Some authors can pull it off. Others can't. Melanie George is in the former group. While I love her "regular" hot and spicy books, I found THSB just as engaging. She managed to make the story hotter, but not pornographic like many other writers do. I found the hero, Derek, to be a typical fantastic MG character. Her heroes truly are the best. And the heroine, Rosalyn, was just as strong and no-nonsense as her counterparts. These two characters are perfect for one another. Score another point for a winning book from Melanie George.

I absolutely love Highlander Historical Romance books and have read all of the collections from Hannah Howell, Julie Garwood, Margaret Moore, Julia London, and Donna Fletcher. These are wonderful writers who can make a romance novel so much more than just sexy scenes. They have so much talent that even when the themes sometimes are very similar the actual stories and characters keep you wanting to turn the pages. Julie Garwood's can make me laugh at the most wonderful antics that she incorporates in her novel.

Now to get to Melanie George AND "The Highlander's Stolen Bride", I can only say that either this is her very first novel or please Ms. George stick to being a CEO of a Personnel Agency, you cannot write. This is one of the most boring books that I have every read, I am so glad that I did not pay much for it. There is no story involved and had totally uninteresting characters which she tries to cover up with sexy scenes on almost every other page. WHERE IS THE STORY!
