Book Description

That terms like sandwich complexes or the concept of compounds without direct chemical bonds between the central metal atom and the ligating atoms are nowadays common knowledge can be attributed to the sensational discovery of ferrocene in the early 1950s. Although ferrocene is still at the forefront of research, this two-volume book highlights the development of metallocene chemistry, and emphasizes the similarities and differences between ferrocene and other metallocenes.

Do you require a transition metal to build metallocenes? Must the planes of the cyclopentadienyl ligands be parallel to allow the compound to behave like a typical metallocene? Do zirconocenes react by the same mechanism as molybdenocenes? What are the (potential) applications of these substances?

Let yourself be guided by the leading experts in this field, and learn all about the synthesis, reactivity, and unique properties of these sandwich complexes. If you are more interested in applications, there is a wealth of polymeric and dendritic materials with metallocene building blocks described herein. This book also focusses on metallocenes as catalysts in polymerization or asymmetric reactions. If you are graduate student or researcher in organic, inorganic, organometallic, polymer chemistry, and materials science you will find this book an inspiring source of ideas for your own research.

5 out of 5 stars Need my own copy!.......2002-12-15

As a graduate student in organometallic chemistry, this book has been wonderful. I have been using my boss's copy for the last several years, but am about to defend my thesis. I really would like my own copy of this text when I go to my first job. It covers all the major metallocene compounds currently being used industrially with an emphasis on the synthesis of these compounds. Histroic synthetic strategies towards various types of metallocenes are also explored. It is a great book/set.

    Book Description

How does a bacterial cell grow during the division cycle? This question is answered by the codeveloper of the Cooper-Helmstetter model of DNA replication. In a unique analysis of the bacterial division cycle, Cooper considers the major cell categories (cytoplasm, DNA, and cell surface) and presents a lucid description of bacterial growth during the division cycle.
The concepts of bacterial physiology from Ole Maaløe's Copenhagen school are presented throughout the book and are applied to such topics as the origin of variability, the pattern of DNA segregation, and the principles underlying growth transitions.
The results of research on E. coli are used to explain the division cycles of Caulobacter, Bacilli, Streptococci, and eukaryotes. Insightful reanalysis highlights significant similarities between these cells and E.coli.
With over 25 years of experience in the study of the bacterial division cycle, Cooper has synthesized his ideas and research into an exciting presentation. He manages to write a comprehensive volume that will be of great interest to microbiologists, cell physiologists, cell and molecular biologists, researchers in cell-cycle studies, and mathematicians and engineering scientists interested in modeling cell growth.

          Book Description

The history of molecular genetics shows that the study of simple microbial models, provided first by bacteriophages and then bacteria, yields data of fundamental importance to the whole of biology. The genomes of eukaryotic microbes, although many times smaller than those of mammals and flowering plants, also provide essential keys to our general understanding of biology. This volume reviews how much has been achieved with these more complex microbial models and points the way forward in this exciting and burgeoning field.

              Book Description

The general field of fundamental and applied biotechnology becomes increasingly important for the production of biologicals for human and veterinary use, by using prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms. The papers in the present book are refereed articles compiled from oral and poster presentations from the EFB Meeting on Recombinant Protein Production with Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells. A Comparative View on Host Physiology, which was organized in Semmering/A from 5th to 8th October 2000. A special feature of this meeting was the comparison of different classes of host cells, mainly bacteria, yeasts, filamentous fungi, and animal cells, which made obvious that many physiological features of recombinant protein formation, like cell nutrition, stress responses, protein folding and secretion, or genetic stability, follow similar patterns in different expression systems. This comparative aspect is by far the point of most interest because such comparisons are rarely done, and if they are done, their results are most often kept secret by the companies who generated them.
Audience: Presently, a comparable book does not exist because the compiling of manuscripts from all fields of biotechnology (prokaryotic as well as eukaryotic, up to animal cell biotechnology) is not done in general. This particularity makes this book very interesting for postgraduate students and professionals in the large field of biotechnology who want to get a more global view on the current state of the expression of recombinant biologicals in different host cell systems, the physiological problems associated with the use of different expression systems, potential approaches to solve such difficulties by metabolic engineering or the use of other host cells, and the cooperation between process development and strain improvement, which is crucial for the optimisation of both the production strain and the process. This book should be in every library of an institution/organization involved in biotechnology.

Who hasn't dreamed, on a mundane Monday or frowzy Friday, of chucking it all in and packing off to the south of France? Provençal cookbooks and guidebooks entice with provocatively fresh salads and azure skies, but is it really all Côtes-du-Rhône and fleur-de-lis? Author Peter Mayle answers that question with wit, warmth, and wicked candor in A Year in Provence, the chronicle of his own foray into Provençal domesticity.

Beginning, appropriately enough, on New Year's Day with a divine luncheon in a quaint restaurant, Mayle sets the scene and pits his British sensibilities against it. "We had talked about it during the long gray winters and the damp green summers," he writes, "looked with an addict's longing at photographs of village markets and vineyards, dreamed of being woken up by the sun slanting through the bedroom window." He describes in loving detail the charming, 200-year-old farmhouse at the base of the Lubéron Mountains, its thick stone walls and well-tended vines, its wine cave and wells, its shade trees and swimming pool--its lack of central heating. Indeed, not 10 pages into the book, reality comes crashing into conflict with the idyll when the Mistral, that frigid wind that ravages the Rhône valley in winter, cracks the pipes, rips tiles from the roof, and tears a window from its hinges. And that's just January.

In prose that skips along lightly, Mayle records the highlights of each month, from the aberration of snow in February and the algae-filled swimming pool of March through the tourist invasions and unpredictable renovations of the summer months to a quiet Christmas alone. Throughout the book, he paints colorful portraits of his neighbors, the Provençaux grocers and butchers and farmers who amuse, confuse, and befuddle him at every turn. A Year in Provence is part memoir, part homeowner's manual, part travelogue, and all charming fun. --L.A. Smith

                      Book Description

In this witty and warm-hearted account, Peter Mayle tells what it is like to realize a long-cherished dream and actually move into a 200-year-old stone farmhouse in the remote country of the Lubéron with his wife and two large dogs. He endures January's frosty mistral as it comes howling down the Rhône Valley, discovers the secrets of goat racing through the middle of town, and delights in the glorious regional cuisine. A Year in Provence transports us into all the earthy pleasures of Provençal life and lets us live vicariously at a tempo governed by seasons, not by days.

                      4 out of 5 stars A Year in Provence - a delight.......2007-10-01

Over a decade has passed since A Year in Provence was published but time has not dulled the images, humor or humanity of Peter Mayle's wonderful story of an English couple's misadventures as they seek the good life in Rural France. The people, the food, and the land all come alive as the Mayle family struggles to rebuild an old farmhouse and blend in with the locals. This is the book that re-ignited interest in one one of France's most beautiful and gracious regions.

4 out of 5 stars GOING TO THE DOGS IN THE LAND OF THE FROGS.......2007-09-03

Peter Mayle's delightful expose of his first year as "foreigners" in Provence proves highly entertaining reading--for serious or armchair travelers. This month-by-month account proves a painfully honest narrative: how a perfectly respectable English couple "goes native" in just twelve months in Southern France. Clearly a cautionary tale this book catalogues the clandestine allures faced by naive Anglo-Saxons who have clearly absorbed too much semi-tropical heat to retain their Northern European rationality.

Read and be warned of the psychological horrors of gradulaly
slipping from productive, English sobriety and a lifestyle of moderation, into the fathomless pit of culinary worship with its acolytes: bread, wine, garlic, truffles, olive oil, cheese and game birds.

So this charming, apparently normal couple emigrates to southern France, where they are baffled by Provencal accents, attitudes and the
natives' flexible view of Time. The Mayles are thrown in without adequate warning to deal with sly peasants, avid promoters, local civic pride, excitable construction workers, rude drop-in guests and the seasonal invasion of European tourists: German campers and snobby Parisians who consider the entire globe beneath their notice.

The Mayles' first year concludes with the renovation (well, almost completed) of an old stone house, during which time they have earned the grudging respect of their colorful neighbors. Unfortunately, the standards of the once safe and sane British Empire have definitely disintegrated into shameless dedication/degradation to the gods of food and drink. The plotline can be briefly summed up: Going to the dogs--as some might say, (despite the fact that the couple actually brought their own dogs from home) in the land of the Frogs. If you read this book you'll never need to visit Provence in person, and yourfunny bone will be well fed, but your tummy/waist line will surely miss out.

5 out of 5 stars Held Me From The First Page ~ A Classic!.......2007-08-30

Love this book! It truly is a classic! From the first page it's fun, well-written, very entertaining, and made me feel I was there. All huge plusses with any book. I don't want to give too much away in hopes you'll buy it yourself and enjoy it slowly like a deliciously seductive meal in France. Very giftable, too! I'm thinking stocking stuffers? A little "just because" gift for a friend who needs a pick-me-up package in the mail? Or a housewarming gift with a bottle of French wine?

I read this book several years ago, and loved it so much I wanted to move to Provence.

I bought to give as a gift.

3 out of 5 stars British liege lord, French slaves.......2007-08-22

The long-running international success of this book is amazing. Almost enough to promote head-scratching. Doubt. Confusion. Fear of the Apocalypse. Because, if you really look at it, the book ain't all that great.

A YEAR IN PROVENCE tells the true story of a snobbish, know-it-all Englishman (a certain Peter Mayle) who retires after a successful career in the publishing industry in England and then buys an ancient farmhouse in Provence. He and his wife move in, eat fancy meals, re-do the house with all manner of expensive and modern luxuries, and cruise around the area looking for cute country restaurants, stores, and open-air markets, and even cuter anecdotes. That's the whole story: part culinary celebration by an English foodie, part travelogue of a newly retired control freak, part tourism poster for the French national administrative district of Provence/Cote d'Azure, A YEAR IN PROVENCE is the story of one wealthy, non-working Brit's gaze on a bunch of French people who do have jobs. Call it a giant chocolate box of witty, self-affirming anecdotes, some nutty, some sweet, most all scrumptious if ultimately empty.

In a move of sophistication that reminds me of Albert Einstein's most intellectually fertile period, Mr. Mayle names each chapter after a month. For example, Chapter 1 is actually called "January." Then Chapter 2 is called "February." It's "a year in Provence"!

But seriously, folks: Mr. Mayle gets a big shout-out for his descriptions of the cuisine served in Provence. It really is a foodie's delight to hear him tell of meal after succulent meal, wine after sweet wine. Also, kudos to the big Mr. M for his loving portraiture of the Provençal countryside. Here, too, the author excels. I, too, have lived in Provence, and his panoramas of the villages and countryscapes are spot-on.

But then we have to touch on the overall "me lord, you slave" nature of the text. As mentioned above, Mr. Mayle is retired. And he spends the whole book condesending to and commenting upon the hard-working residents who live in Provence and are just trying to get by. They exist, A YEAR IN PROVENCE tells us, so that a wealthy, superior, judgmental Brit can hover around them and fawn over them the way a slave owner must have grinned out appreciatively from the plantation's steps onto the poor folk working his fields.

So--in short--if you like your Provence filled with two-dimensional, grinning, child-like adults who shimmy and charm like Bojangles to make a smug, well-fed foreigner feel happy and superior, then Peter Mayle has written a book for you.

Our whole family has enjoyed being transported to Provence by these tapes while on long distance driving trips. The readers voices conveyed perfectly the flavor and humor of these stories, and wheted our desires to join the author in the bucolic splendor of the French countryside. After a year I still recall the feeling of the warm summer sun and the icy winter winds, the tastes of the provincial restaurants, and the uniqueness of the neighbors and friends we met and enjoyed via these remarkable tapes. Were that all books on tape were as well done and captivating. Highly recommended if you would like to savor the unexpected joys of an often not-so-quiet country retreat.

                      Book Description

From Peter Mayle, a wonderful new novel steeped in wine—and the business of wine?and set in, bien sûr, Provence.

Max Skinner is not exactly setting the London financial world on fire?and when his supervisor steals his biggest client, it’s definitely time to inspect the vineyard in Provence that his recently departed uncle left him. Heartily and happily distracted upon his arrival by the landscape, the weather, and the food?not to mention the gorgeous notaire handling the estate and the stunning owner of the local bistro?Max almost forgets about his inherited property.

Which might have been a good idea, because the wine produced there is swill. But then why, Max has to wonder, is his caretaker so anxious to acquire the land? When a beautiful young woman from California arrives with what might be a legitimate claim on the estate, and knowledge of vineyards that far outstrips Max’s own, the plot begins its twists and turns into and out of truly wonderful complications and resolutions.

This is luscious reading?soothing us with the sensual wonders of Provence while it tells a fascinating tale of the hugely lucrative and competitive boutique-wine trade. It is Peter Mayle’s most satisfying, most delectable novel yet.

I was looking for something to read on the plane and picked this book up because I thought it had an interesting setting. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The writing style is clean and the plot not overly-complicated. I thought the characters were believable and fit well into the lovely French countryside setting. I learned a few things about wine, too, but not more than I wanted to know.

It was fun to read a romance from the man's point of view. I also appreciated the easy, light-hearted feel to the story. It was the kind of book I could enjoy in smaller reading spurts as time allowed during my business travel. I will enjoy reading this book again some cold, rainy afternoon when I need a little literary escape.

My first Peter Mayle book and I was hooked. I have ready almost all of the rest but enjoyed this the most. Another book that was a good combination of a love story from a man's point of view with humour, wit, a little spice and a great view of life in southern France. I think many men will be able to identify with the main character and the trials and tribunes he goes through in life. Few people live their dreams as this character did but this was written in such a way that everyone could see himself following this same path without stretching their imagination. too far.

                        Book Description

"These students were natural, uninhibited, full of the joy of life, yet were mannerly and exhibited respect for authority. I can say that I wish all traveling Americans could be as charming and as good ambassadors as your group!"-From a former dean of freshmen at Dartmouth College in a letter to our headmaster after visiting the Hotel de L'Atelier in Villeneuve

. To read about and see photos of the ancient Pont du Gard in a history book is one thing, but to study it one morning and the same afternoon go racing across the top or through the aqueduct and marvel at the skill of the Romans 2000 years ago is quite another. Well, that's precisely what we did in 1970.

The Camargue, a marshy delta on the Mediterranean at the mouth of the Rhône River, is a huge regional park and bird paradise with wild horses and bulls and sandy beaches. I had read and heard about this area, but never had occasion to visit. It seemed like the perfect time because there was an annual event in Saintes Maries de la Mer where gypsy people meet for the ritual of carrying a statue of Ste. Marie into the ocean to be blessed.

If you'd like to read about a trip to France with very young students some thirty-seven years ago, this is the book for you. Gerry Ashley's ninth graders are eager to explore the world and experience a different culture on an extended basis. The book details the planning and execution of this brave venture, highlighting the imaginative ways Ms. Ashley immersed her students in the life of a village in Provence. The book demonstrates clearly the lasting impact of foreign study on the lives of these students: it's appealing to any reader and could be very useful to language teachers planning their own ventures.

5 out of 5 stars To France, With Teenagers.......2007-07-14

Surely the ideal way to see a country is to spend several months doing it. No 48-hour galloping survey of churches and museums enlightens or enchants anyone, not in the long term. (Or the short one either, for that matter.). American teacher of French Gerry Ashley and her students - eight high school Freshmen - made the time to do it right in 1970. Ashley had the wit to plan an eight-month experience - the entire school year - that all agree, 37 years later, was hugely successful, both educationally and developmentally. Because she and her husband had lived in France as very young newlyweds Ashley knew where to go and what was fun and what was boring. She guided her students as they used and enhanced their knowledge of French, participated in (and learned to appreciate) French culture, history and cuisine, tramped through well- and not so well-known historical sites, visited with the natives with whom they talked (and talked), and benefitted hugely from a once-in-a-lifetime adventure memorialized by hundreds of snapshots, many of which appear in this amazing book.
The mind wobbles at the audacity of Ashley's vision. Her memoir of the trip captures this audicity but remains unfailingly modest, thorough, and wise. She never takes the credit but spreads it generously to include everybody - the school administration, the parents, her family, the French people encountered along the way and especially her students. As you read what she has written you appreciate not only her good sense and skill in recapturing a deeply layered experience, but you end up wishing that all teachers - even without this magical trip to offer - were as devoted and as imaginative as the writer of this wonderful book.

and a book to read! This author/teacher takes the reader on an adventure that is hard to imagine today -- traveling in France with eight teenagers, for a year! She tells the story of the year they spent in and around Provence in 1970. If you are considering travel, with or without children, in that part of the world, it is well worth a read. And if you are a teacher, it is a must read! Ashley is a model all teachers should look up to! Bravo to her for taking the adventure, and for sharing the story!

5 out of 5 stars Just like traveling with them............2007-06-05

This is a gem of a book. Back in the early 1970s, an adventurous French teacher decided to take a small collection of American students -- just high school freshmen -- to Avignon with her for a year. They essentially rented out a B&B and a wild blue VW Bus for the duration, and spent their time studying math and English, practicing their French wherever they went, and using their B&B as a base of operations for journeys all across Southern Europe.
The author's perspective is deliciously warm. Each child comes to life. Each stage of the journey has a rounded, three-dimensional quality. It is clear just how much she and the others are improvising -- intent on making this a year to remember, and a year to treasure.
I bought this sight unseen and, as soon as I finished reading, I shared it with the World Language Chair at my school. A warm, inspiringly upbeat read.....and an example for how more overseas programs might be designed....

                              Product Description

Reminiscent of Peter Mayle's memoir, A Year in Provence and Frances Mayes' Under the Tuscan Sun, this book explores the authors' Italianization on an unnamed Chianti hilltop. Howard, a museum educator, and Mello, an artist, decide to move into a medieval castle. They're welcomed by new village neighbors who share their stories. Abundant drawings and lithographs illustrate the book.
