These include, among others, the study of conventional and high-Tc superconductors, semiconductors, low-dimensional organic conductors, conducting polymers and protein crystallization. Good Characters.......2007-09-26

I liked the characters in this book. I thought they were well formed and realistic. I was a little skeptical of the emotions displayed. People seemed to easily switch from one extreme to the other in short order, but considering that this entire story is recreated from a short story in the Bible and the rest is imagination, it was well done overall.

You can read the plot and story line in the comments and reviews, so I won't get into it. The most important addition I feel I can make here is to say that this book takes a "character" from the Bible and makes her real. Too often I forget that the people in the Bible lived, and that most were "ordinary" like us. I raise them up to lofty positions in my mind. This series has given a human aspect to the lives of women who simply loved God, and it can inspire us to make a difference in our own little world.

Francine Rivers has the wonderful ability to take a character from the bible and bring her to life, by adding context and details. Although the additions are fictional, they are well researched and give great insight into the culture and the times, and make for a fascinating story.

I love how Francine Rivers gets into the mind of Rahab. She brought out emotions and thoughts that I would have never associated with Rahab. It makes you realize just how awesome God is and how He reaches out to whoever seeks Him wherever they are in this world. Highly recommend this one!

Unashamed to Recommend this Book.......2003-11-14

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I have no qualms recommending this book to the couples I see. Dr. Farhart has written an excellent book that answers all of those questions that most people have about sex, but just don't know where to look for answers. He proves that sex does not have to be dirty to be good. The information is presented in frank and honest language, which is appropriate for couples of any age. For the parent who doesn't know how to talk to their teen about sex, this book provides answers without embarrassment. Whether the question is about sexual health, better understanding of human sexuality, or how to make sex more fulfilling, I highly recommend Intimate and Unashamed.

A Realistic Christian book on sex........2003-08-06

When I took a course on marriage and family counseling in seminary 20 years ago, I heard much about Ed Wheat's book, Intended for Pleasure. It is filled with good knowledge, but dry. After 20 years of pastoral ministry and 15 years of marriage, I find it both boring and limited in its approach to realistic Christian sex in marriage. A few years ago, someone introduced me to Dr. Rowenau's book, A Celebration of Sex. Because of its more human touch, I gladly gave newlyweds a copy of this book if necessary.

Dr. Farhart's book, Intimate & Unashamed does more than just offer medically sound and biblically based advice. He addresses real life sexual issues that many prudish Christians either blindly ignore or thoughtlessly condemn. He encourages the use of vibrators, lingere, massage oils, enjoying the bathtub together, fantasy, and making love only in the bedroom instead of on a deserted beach, etc. I now have a book that is both fully Christian, medically accurate, and wholesomely human or realistic.

Farhart's book is one which a Christian therapist friend of mine will rejoice over. She like Farharts thinks that Christian women are most hesitent to looseen up, but they need too. My friend tell me that she has her Chriatian clients go and buy a secular book on sex. She considers many Christian books on sex to be very limited. I agree that a Chrstian couples' love life can be enrished by secular book on sex. In addition to Intimate and Unashamed, I would recommend Ultimate Sex, The Art of Sensual Loving, Sexopedia as well as Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus for the bedroom.

I am very thankful for myself and others for Farhart's realistic book on sex for Christians.

Intimate and Unashamed: God's Design for Sexual Fulfillment.......2003-06-27

I received this book from a friend. I am so impressed with the boldness this author approaches the subject of sex. The questions that he is able to answer makes this book the last book you will need to buy on this subject matter.

My husband and I both feel that since it is based in conjunction with the Word of God we know that the answers found inside will be in line with what we know to be Bible truths.

The section that helped me significantly was on the topic of birth control and more specifically, sterilization. It answered many of my questions on whether or not I should be the one who has the surgery or my husband.

I guarantee you will find this book to be one you can run to with ANY question you have on sex for any age. Thank you Dr. Farhart for listening to a woman's cry for a place to run to for bold, God inspiring answers! It's about time somebody wrote it an a "easy-to-read" format.

Most balanced approach yet!.......2003-06-25

Dr. Farhart has taken this issue to a new level. Unlike so many of the Christian authors on this subject (most of whom have written excellent books themselves) he has expanded the issue into areas that others have not but which many of us in Christianity today are grappling with. I thought he was incredibly courageous to be honest when Scripture was not clear but at the same time, he would make it clear as he discussed who we are in Christ and how that makes the difference in how we should view certain topics. His discussion of plastic surgery as well as a few other current "hot" topics among Christians these days clarified so much for me and enabled me to put my thoughts into focus.

In addition, Intimate and Unashamed is a book that can be read and enjoyed by both husband and wife. So many these days are primarily for the women.

Thanks Doc for your efforts and your honesty. This is a necessity in every household. It's a reminder of who we are in Christ and that God made ALL aspects of life to be enjoyed and lived to the fullest.

I had my husband read the book, and DR. Farhart gives sexual desires from a womans perspective (how I don't know), but he was able to inform my husband as to how a woman responds sexually to a man.

It's a dirty job but somebody has to do it........2007-09-07

Public executions have always attracted large crowds of curious citizens. This was even truer in the pre-mass communication, pre-radio, pre-television era. When the most exciting forms of entertainment were traveling minstrels and circuses, executions were a favorite form of spectator sport. It was even required in some areas that everyone witnesses punishments in hopes that they would avoid breaking the same laws. History records huge crowds coming from great distances to see the final act of their fellow humans. Hangings, impalements, drowning, beheadings, burning people at the stake, drawing and quartering and disemboweling were horrible events. Carrying out these legal executions was a dirty job, but somebody had to do it. And most people weren't anxious to have the job. Sometimes other condemned prisoners had their own sentences commuted if they served as the executioners of their fellow condemned prisoners.
Since executioners were considered practitioners of the worst job on the planet, many of the people serving as the actual final instrument for carrying out the dictates of the judicial system, were ostracized by society. This book does a decent job of portraying the world of the executioner and details the lives of many of England's most infamous executioners. Since so many of these people didn't have any idea of what they were doing, it was a major breakthrough when some of the more sensitive executioners began to develop more humane ways to carry out death sentences. Eventually, these men devised scientific methods to instantly break their client's necks rather than letting them slowly strangle to death. Likewise for developing machines to instantly cut off heads rather than maybe having an executioner have to swing his ax or sword half a dozen times to complete his work.
The book is morbidly fascinating. The author did a good job of trying to stick with the facts and not editorialize on the subject of the death penalty. The author's bias against the death penalty does show up in the text occasionally and usually results in him making bleeding heart (no pun intended) conclusions that defy both common sense and historical fact. The book is still worth reading because it shows that humanity is definitely making progress and is at least trying to be as humane as possible in cases of capital punishment. It also introduces and discusses many fascinating historical characters on both sides of law. It's good to see that some high-minded individuals can make even the dirtiest job in the world more humane and scientific. Those were traits that many of the viewers of these macabre public events didn't really appreciate or desire. Many actually preferred long, drawn out shows and that morbid fact is why most executions are no longer major public events.

Dying to Know More?.......2006-07-29

This is a popular, anecdotal, enjoyable account of executioners. It relies over-much on the stories of the criminals who were executed rather than focusing on the exeuctioners themselves. Alas, this is a necessity for filling pages since the documents are scanty and sparse more than a century back. Still, this book is fun and reads well. For the non-academic reader it should be quite interesting. The scholarly reader would do well to continue searching elsewhere.

Light Jests and Heavy Sermons.......2004-11-11

Wry! Using mock detachment, clinical detail, understatement and overstatement, Howard Engel presents a chronicle of capital punishment through the eyes, ears, minds and hearts of the world's tribe of hangmen, headsmen and their henchmen. With feigned scientific aloofness and a straight face, Engel allows the death penalty to speak for itself against itself. His masterful treatment of a sordid subject proves that a light jester teaches more than a heavy sermonizer.

Executioners are people too............2004-04-08

I found this book to be quite entertaining and informative look at people who executed other people in the name of the law. The book centered more or less around British justice system. In more ways then one, these executioners tries to be as professional as possible in their crafts. The author goes back to the mediveal period to the current time in telling accounts of how executions were done and conducted. Stories like one of James Barry (a hangman) who came up with a chart of how far a man should drop before his neck breaks on the knotted rope based on the body weight revealed that some people tries to make serious work out of their job.

The author writes with clarity and the book appears to be well researched. I supposed the author tries to insert an political anti-capital punishment bias into this book but I thought the effort was partially defeated because the book showed how capital punishment if properly applied, works! (Meaning, murderers don't killed again after they were hung!!) After that read this book, I was more for capital punishment then before.

A vibrant & witty approach to the science of execution.......2001-05-25

Not only does this book take you through the long drop, the short drop, and the always crowd-pleasing beheading, it takes you through the lives of the death bringers themselves. Some who were truly masters of their craft, and humerous tales of those who would need four hits with a sharp axe in order to take the head. Not nearly as dry as most books written on the subject, has good illustrations and would be an excellent research tool for any writer. Begins with an intensive focus on England, especially the infamous "road to Tyburn" and continues onto focus on the hanging methods in Canada, and lastly the evolution of death in America. The volume also gives a brief note to the only documented female headsmen that I have yet to come across. High marks! Where most history books run by numbers, names, and locations, this one takes the time to give you an intense look at the method of execution and the personal character and life of each on of its subjects. Very well researched and I cannot praise the quality of the writing enough.

One of the best books about sharing the gospel. This book will put a fire under you and help you realize what it is that we need to do as believers.

The opening chapter engages you right away. You think that this is a fictional story in the beginning but he uses fictional circumstances as examples to get the idea through of the importance of sharing the gospel.
