    Book Description

More than simply an up-to-date review of ionic polymerization, this book presents an in-depth and critical comparison of the anionic and cationic polymerization of vinyl monomers and heterocyclic compounds. These different modes of ionic polymerization are examined with regard to their capacity for producing living polymers. The concept of living polymers is re-examined and redefined in light of current knowledge of ionic polymerization and possible side reactions. Throughout, the authors offer perceptive insights into the basic concepts of polymerization chemistry and polymerization reaction mechanisms. The book begins with a review of ionic and radical polymerizations, the development of ionic polymerization, living and dormant polymers, and polymerizability. It goes on to consider important aspects of the structure and properties of ionic species; initiation and propagation of ionic polymerization; polymerization steps other than initiation or propagation, such as termination, isomerization, transfer, backbiting, and degraduation; and ionic copolymerization. Ionic Polymerization and Living Polymers is a much needed advanced text that will be widely read and referred to by polymer scientists, macromolecular chemists, and materials scientists.

All papers were peer-reviewed for this proceedings volume. The conference focused on atomic physics relevant to plasmas, and plasma science dependent on atomic processes, from either a modeling or diagnostics point of view. Also, an exciting breakthrough discovery was first announced at this conference on a new antihydrogen formation technique. Topics include the relatively mature research areas of atomic structure and collisions, atomic kinetics, laser-produced plasmas, magnetic- and inertial-confinement fusion, Z-pinches, opacities and equation of state, lighting, and astrophysics, as well as the burgeoning areas of warm dense matter simulations and ultracold plasmas used, for example, in the recent formation of antihydrogen.

"Fans of TV's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation should be in heaven" (People) stepping into the world of forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan, star of Kathy Reichs' electrifyingly authentic bestsellers.

Her life is devoted to justice -- for those she never even knew.

In the year since Temperance Brennan left behind a shaky marriage in North Carolina, work has often preempted her weekend plans to explore Quebec. When a female corpse is discovered meticulously dismembered and stashed in trash bags, Tempe detects an alarming pattern -- and she plunges into a harrowing search for a killer. But her investigation is about to place those closest to her -- her best friend and her own daughter -- in mortal danger. . . .

                          Download Description

It's June in Montreal, and Tempe, who has left a shaky marriage back home in North Carolina to take on the challenging assignment of director of forensic anthropology for the province of Quebec, looks forward to a relaxing weekend. First, though, she must stop at a newly uncovered burial site in the heart of the city. One look at the decomposed and decapitated corpse, stored neatly in plastic bags, tells her she'll spend the weekend in the crime lab. This is homicide of the worst kind. To begin to find some answers, Tempe must first identify the victim. Who is this person with reddish hair and a small bone structure? Something about the crime scene is familiar to Tempe: the stashing of the body parts, the meticulous dismemberment. One case in particular comes to mind: the murder of sixteen-year-old Chantale Trottier, who'd arrived in the morgue naked, less than a year before, and packaged in plastic garbage bags. Tempe's convinced there are parallels between the two cases, but it will take more victims to persuade her police colleagues. Knowing there is a killer on the streets who may soon find a new victim, Tempe calls upon all her forensic skills, including bone, tooth, and bitemark analysis and X-ray microfluorescence to try to prove that the cases are related and to stop the killer before he strikes again. The next victim may be closer to home - Tempe's longtime friend Gabby, her college-age daughter Katy, or Tempe herself.

Forensic science at it's very best. Better than ever. Well written, well done. More surprises than a circus.

                          4 out of 5 stars A serious mystery..........2007-08-25

Temperance Brennan is smart, strong willed and one of the best forensic anthropologists in the world. When a series of female corpses are found, dismembered and stuffed into trash bags, she detects they are all linked. This would be a great novel but for the fact that the character is so flawed it is almost unbelievable. She has no social skills, not even with one of her best friends who she knew since college. How did she ever get married or get work in Quebec?
While all characters should have flaws and merits, her lack of social skills and her swift temper seems to be more fitting for the killer or alien invader than the main character.
Being a fan of BONES I can see where they took the character and softened it for the TV series. The TV version has to have some chance for romance. While the book version MAY have a chance, it isn't going to be happening in this book or any time too soon.

                          4 out of 5 stars A good start to a great series..........2007-08-20

I started reading Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan series toward the end, so I decided I had better start at the beginning with Deja Dead. Wow! In Deja Dead, Reichs proves that she isn't just your ordinary mystery writer. In fact, she's a forensic anthropologist in real life and provides a new angle in this overproduced genre.

Dr. Temperance Brennan finds herself in Montreal, working as the Director of Forensic Anthropology for the province of Quebec. She fled North Carolina and a failing marriage to start a new life. Just as she starts looking forward to a quiet weekend, a grisly find is unearthed--the mutilated, dismembered body of a woman is found stuffed in trash bags. She has a vague recollection of a similar unsolved case within the past year. She believes that a serial killer is at work. The head of the investigation, Luc Claudel, resents her interference and tries to discount her theory. Another detective, Andrew Ryan, tells her she needs more hard evidence. So that's exactly what she sets out to find, but at great personal risk.

Reichs proves from this very first novel that she knows what she writes about--and not just her anthropological expertise. When discussing a serial killer, a friend from the FBI tells Brennan "A criminal's MO is never static. It's like anything else, there's a learning curve. These guys get better with practice. They learn what works and what doesn't. They're continually improving their technique." Even on a personal level, her observations hit a nerve. For instance, Brennan is a news junkie--even though she knows that there's nothing new in the news. "It's like balls in a Bingo hopper. The same events keep coming up over and over. Earthquake. Coup d'etat. Trade war. Hostage taking. My compulsion is to know which balls are up on any given day."

The only detraction I found in Deja Dead is that Brennan forces herself into the investigation in a way that wouldn't happen in real life. Plus, she takes risks, over and over again. But then again, I'm sure her books would be less exciting if she spent all her time in her laboratory.

I've already started the second book in Reichs' series, Death Du Jour. Plus, I'm anxiously awaiting the release of her latest Brennan next week: Bones to Ashes.

I could not get into this book because it was so bogged down in overly descriptive paragraphs and flower details. I must be an impatient reader because it took forever to get to the "story" and I felt like I had to skip several paragraphs at a time to get past the author's fascination with every little detail in the room, etc.

                          3 out of 5 stars She's done better.......2007-07-06

The first thing I will not do is compare this book to the TV show. Whenever books go to film, one is - in most cases - bound to be disappointed.
Taken for itself, the book is very well-written and maintains a great pace. Reichs has a knack for turning her readers into small-scale experts on forensic science. A plus for those who enjoy realistic details in that area. The tension between her and some on the police force is not overdone, and is built upon in other Brennan mysteries.

The reason I'm only giving three stars is because the nature of the crime she chose for this story really annoyed me. While a brutal murder is often the foundation of a terrific mystery/thriller, this story (involving sects and butchered babies) just went too far for my taste. It seemed to tap into a trend of "the grosser it is, the better it sells". It cashes in on the shock-factor but loses on the psychology behind it. So, great if you like a lot of "gratuitous" violence packed in a well-written story, pass on it if you prefer to delve into the head of a murderer. If that's the case, you'll find better books out there.

Filled with disturbingly authentic crime scenes, Déjà Dead is a stunningly original thriller. Forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs blends mesmerizing true-to-life details with a haunting plot to create a novel so viscerally real it will take your breath away. Its June in Montreal, and Tempe Brennan, Quebecs director of forensic anthropology, is looking forward to a relaxing weekend. Her plans take an unexpected turn when a meticulously dismembered and stored body turns up in a downtown park. Recognizing haunting similarities to another local murder, Tempe knows she is trailing a serial murderer. Now she must search for clues to the killers identity the only way she can: one body at a time. From the exhumation sites to the autopsy suite, Barbara Rosenblats expressive voice pairs with Reichs brisk prose to put you at the scene of the crime.

                                  Product Description

Readers of Kathy Reichs's cool and clever first forensic thriller Déjà Dead will recognize the ironic voice of Tempe (short for Temperance) Brennan, the North Carolina-born scientist who winds up working at the Laboratoire de Médicine Légale in Montreal. Here she bristles at the conservative attitudes of some of her Canadian colleagues. Despite the cold weather, Tempe's workload quickly becomes heavy: the bones of a long-dead nun now up for sainthood have been moved and tampered with; a deadly house fire turns out to be arson; and a university teaching assistant disappears after joining a cult. Tempe must figure out where (and why) all the bodies are buried in the hard Canadian ground. Her investigations take her home to North Carolina, and to a strange colony living on an offshore island. Unlike certain other writers who specialize in forensic pathology, Reichs doesn't revel in the horror of death or rub our noses in gore: she uses the science of death to reveal rather than to shock or startle. It definitely makes for easier reading--especially at mealtimes.
