Book Description
This book is based on lecture notes developed for a one-semester graduate course entitled "The Interaction of Radiation with Matter", taught in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The main objective of the course is to teach enough quantum and classical radiation theory to allow students in engineering and the applied sciences to understand and have access to the vast literature on applications of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation in materials research. Besides presenting the fundamental physics of radiation interactions, the book devotes individual chapters to some of the important modern-day experimental tools, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, photon correlation spectroscopy, and the various types of neutron, x-ray and light-scattering techniques.

Book Description
Introduction to Organic Photochemistry John D. Coyle, The Open University, Milton Keynes The purpose of this book is to provide an introductory account of the major types of organic photochemical reactions, to enable those with a prior knowledge of basic organic chemistry to appreciate the differences between processes which occur photochemically (through an electronically excited state) and those that occur thermally (directly from the electronic ground state). The material is organized according to organic functional groups, in parallel with the approach adopted in most general textbooks on organic chemistry. In this respect it differs from many of the existing, older organic photochemistry texts. The first chapter provides an account of the distinctive features of photochemical reactions, and a physical/mechanistic framework for the descriptions in the rest of the book. The overall emphasis is on organic photoreactions potentially useful in synthesis. The book thus integrates this branch of chemistry with broader aspects of the subject, and introduces the reader to important applications of organic photochemistry.
Customer Reviews:

Book Description
In the last two decades it was demonstrated that, in addition to masses and charges, magnetic moments of nuclei are able to influence remarkably chemical reactions. This book presents the physical background (both theoretical and experimental) of the magnetic isotope effects in radical reactions in solutions. Special attention has been paid to the quantitative interpretation of the available experimental data. This book will be useful for physicists, chemists and biologists employing the isotope effect in their investigations as well as for those involved in isotope separation and isotope enrichment projects. Additionally, the magnetic isotope effect appears to be important in geochemistry and cosmochemistry. The book can be recommended for postgraduates and senior undergraduate students.

Book Description
We normally think of viruses in terms of the devastating diseases they cause, from smallpox to AIDS. But in The Life of a Virus, Angela N. H. Creager introduces us to a plant virus that has taught us much of what we know about all viruses, including the lethal ones, and that also played a crucial role in the development of molecular biology.
Focusing on the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) research conducted in Nobel laureate Wendell Stanley's lab, Creager argues that TMV served as a model system for virology and molecular biology, much as the fruit fly and laboratory mouse have for genetics and cancer research. She examines how the experimental techniques and instruments Stanley and his colleagues developed for studying TMV were generalized not just to other labs working on TMV, but also to research on other diseases such as poliomyelitis and influenza and to studies of genes and cell organelles. The great success of research on TMV also helped justify increased spending on biomedical research in the postwar years (partly through the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis's March of Dimes)—a funding priority that has continued to this day.
Customer Reviews:
Great read.......2005-01-02
This historical account of research on a viral model system is educational and fun to read. It illuminates scientific research and lives of researchers, which should be of interest to scientists and laymen alike. Alot of emphasis is placed on personal scientific communication and the role government played in shaping post-WWII science.
The review is comprehensively researched and well written. The account highlights the role played by model systems in biological research as well as the impact it had on unexpected areas of bacteriology, genetic basis of heredity, etc.
Great fun to read.

Book Description
In Thailand, a bomb destroys a tourist spot while two North Korean terrorists casually walk away from the site to plan the next phase of their plot against the United States.
In Washington, CIA analyst Hugh Rincon catches the chatter about something big being planned along the Pacific rim, and his best agent says its linked to the Thailand blast. Now Hugh is beginning to connect the dots between missing radioactive material, a SCUD missile sold on the black market, and a Russian ship sailing toward the Alaskan coast…but the Administration refuses to heed his warning.
In the Bering Sea, Coast Guard cutter Sojourner Truth is on routine patrol. On board is Hugh’s estranged wife, executive officer Sara Lange. Sara and her ship are Hugh’s only hope for stopping the terrorists…if she’s willing to believe her ex-husband’s story and risk her own career—and her crew’s lives—to hunt down a death ship….
Customer Reviews:
Seasoned writer falls short on this one.......2007-08-30
Dana Stabenow is well known for her mysteries. In "Blindfold Game," she branches out into a new direction.
Taking her title from the Rudyard Kipling poem, "The Destroyers," Stabenow delves into the murky world of international intrigue, terrorism and politics. But Stabenow stays within the familiar confines of the Last Frontier, for the most part, with a few side trips to Washington, D.C., the Maritime Boundary Line and some minor side trips to South Korea, Thailand and London.
It stars the CIA, the Coast Guard, environmental activists, the FBI and illicit Russian trawlers.
Three childhood friends, who grew up together in a typical Alaskan village, all go into law enforcement: Hugh Rincon is an analyst for the CIA in Langley, Va.; Sara Lange, his estranged wife, is the executive officer on the Coast Guard cutter USS Sojourner Truth patrolling the Bering Sea; and Kyle Chase is an agent for the FBI in Anchorage. Their paths have diverged since growing up--even Rincon and Lange spend most of their 10-year marriage in different places. But in "Blindfold Game," their paths cross professionally--and dangerously.
Rincon discovers someone is buying black market plutonium. It takes him a while, but he realizes the target is America--in fact, the target is Anchorage. His boss, an appointee with no desire to rock anyone's boat, doesn't believe him. That's pretty typical in a thriller plot.
Eventually, he discovers that the Sojourner Truth is the only American asset that can stop the attack, but the risks are great that Lange will not survive.
There's a lot going on in this book--international terrorists, bombings, piracy, double-and triple-crossing among the bad guys, death, dismemberment, torture, marital discord, career crises even the nature of old friendships come in for discussion. It's tiring, to be honest.
And confusing. There are some plot points that just don't make sense--the book opens with a bomb exploding in Pattaya Beach, Thailand. No one in the novel understands the significance of the target--and neither does the reader. The explanation later--that it was a test run for the bigger picture involving Anchorage--is a bit too theatrical.
The characters are well-drawn, and the reader can become emotionally involved in the outcome and their fate. They are also almost clichés in some ways: There's the guy who couldn't wait to get out of Dodge (Rincon), the girl who is torn between the land, the man and the job (Lange), and the guy who can think of no place else he'd rather raise a family (Chase).
Stabenow has her details pretty well nailed down, especially when it comes to the Coast Guard. She spent 16 days patrolling with the USCG cutter Alex Haley as research for this book, and it shows. The scenes on Sojourner Truth are sharp and clear, easy to see and become a part of.
But the rest--well, there's some work that needs to be done.
Being a thriller fan, I've probably read hundreds of this type of book, by the well-known and barely known. So it was easy for me to find a few problems with the plot itself--most of the set-up is unbelievable. It seems improbable that two people with a wish (I won't get any more specific because I don't want to ruin it for readers) to foster and implement such a grand-scale and wide-ranging conspiracy could manage it alone, and their motive is flimsy and dubious.
The set-up is long and involved, and the ending comes about way too quickly--like a snowball going downhill. Not only does it move fast, but it gets bigger and more difficult to believe with each foot.
And the ending--well, let's just say it was unfulfilling. First on the "Huh?" list is the epilogue, when the powers-that-be are discussing the incident. With seven Americans dead, including a Coast Guard captain, and 13 wounded, not to mention the foreign nationals killed during the pirating, the bombing and subsequent military actions, I think the government would have looked really hard for a money source. Maybe they did, but Stabenow leaves us with this: "We don't know yet, sir. We have some leads, which we are tracing now, and ..."
See what I mean?
The other thing that really bothered me was the fact that the terrorists were successful, in that their "dirty bomb" was detonated, and civilians died--albeit it years later--as a result. The callous (and unmentionably stupid in these days of 24/7 news) reaction of the administration seemed unrealistic as well.
And on a technical note; Stabenow needs a new editor. Not only were there numerous typos and other misspellings, but some fact-checking should have been done. When the bomb went off in Thailand, it had everyone wondering who was behind it, and the Irish Republican Army was named as a possibility. But the IRA had--before the cease-fire, anyway--as its goal to drive England out of Ireland. Bombing a restaurant in Thailand is not something that would have brought them closer to that goal. There are enough suspect organizations out there--one that is a viable threat would have been easier to swallow.
Bottom line; If you're a Stabenow fan, you'll read this because you're a Stabenow fan. If you like thrillers, you might want to wait until she's a little more seasoned in this genre.
Blindfold Game.......2007-07-19
My one complaint with the book was that it was not 100 pages longer. The writing is completely engrossing, from the vividly detailed descriptions both of setting and action to the intriguing plot that built up logically in disclosure as the story went along, yet still managed to have a surprise element in its conclusion. The story is set in the Alaskan waters incorporating the elements of international fishing, the US Coast Guard and modern day bad guys with an ingenious way of carrying out a contemporary threat. Characterization is colorful. Even the bad guys are humanized, though they never to the extent that they could be wished well. All in all, a very interesting read.
Blindfold Game.......2007-05-12
Dana Stabenow writes forcefully about the majesty of the Alaskan wilderness. I always consider a trip every time I finish one of her stories. The passion to protect her home state and to admire and uphold the native population is as familiar to her as to her favorite brand of coffee. The characters and plot of this book are as challenging as they are engaging. I had to evaluate who had the perception of the most to gain or loose in order to figure out "who-done-it". I really enjoy participating in the climax and ending even when I am wrong.
Good reading for action.......2007-02-17
This book was a different subject content for Stabenow. I consider it one of her best books. It is good reading, entertaining, and fast moving.
Different for D. Stabenow.......2007-01-19
I liked this book very much - kept a good pace and had a good story, but I didn't feel as "into" the characters as I have with her other books. I still would recommend it. The ending really had me on the edge of my seat!

An absolute classic of instruction, the old-fashioned way........2006-04-25
I have owned upwards of 700 chess books at various times, and somehow I never knew of the existence of this book of Blackburne's Games until recently. I found it on a used store shelf, and was a little bit shocked. I have been more shocked working through the book. It is an incredibly useful instructive book, that has had such an impact on me, that it has made me re-think my general view on chess books. This Dover edition is based on a book written in 1899 by Blackburne. The cover says the games in the book were "selected, annotated, and arranged" by Blackburne. Normally, these are not the type of words to cause a second thought, but they lie at the heart of my change in view as mentioned. Blackburne begins the book with some clear statements that his intent is to provide a book of instruction for aspiring players. One cannot help but wonder, though, looking at the sparse annotations, how Blackburned intends to do this. The annotations are presented as footnotes after the games, in a manner similar to in the book, "Pillsbury's Chess Career" and Alekhine's book of the 1924 New York Tournament. I had always found this method of annotation awkward, until now. Blackburne's idea is that there is no better way to improve than to play through many master games. The key is these games are well selected, and arranged, in order that working carefully through the games will be an education in itself. It has occurred to me that the selection and arrangement of games is a vastly underrated factor in reading chess books. We tend to focus more on annotations, and especially want our hand held as someone like Chernev walks us through instructive games, providing a nice simple comment at every move. But Blackburne's idea seems to be that if you play through carefully selected games, arranged by opening or thematically, and think for yourself, you will learn the game better than by having your hand held. This is not to say that the annotations are unimportant. Each game has one diagram, normally at a key moment as the game is entering the ending phase. Blackburne's concise comments throughout, with an occasional key variation thrown in, are judiciously chosen and are just enough that you feel this great master's kind presence with you as you go through the game. And his use of English is beautiful and communicates his points very well with no wasted words. He emphasizes that players have to play in accordance with their temperament, and he starts the book with a section on the French Defence, which he said he kept playing as long as white players exchanged the center pawns, as this allowed him to play his preferred open type games with lots of piece play. He then shows you several French games along these lines. The games themselves are each treasures, many of them 60, 70, 80 moves long. It is very helpful to have the notes as footnotes, so that you can play through the game without the notes in your face, and this way the game itself and its moves are the chief instruction. The games are carefully selected so that each move or phase is just a highly packed, instructive piece of chess. Blackburne was especially known as an endgame master, and these long endings are incredibly instructive, and none of it is beyond the grasp of the average player to comprehend. Again, the notes to the games are very helpful, just enough for you to follow his train of thought and to sort of feel his presence with you as that of a kind and encouraging teacher. I did not know Blackburne well before this book. There was always something larger than life about him. When you are reading about Steinitz, Anderssen, Zukertort, etc., Blackburne kind of looms in the background like some sort of Ben Franklin type figure; a genius in his own right, but in some ways a little separate from the main founding fathers. That image has been borne out for me. One effect of this book on me was that when I realized its impact, I immediately bought the Pillsbury book, which I had sold. I think there is major value in playing through the games of a single player. Here, it is a huge key that Blackburned assembled the book. We all have too much chess data in front of us, and I often think that what I need is a teacher to show me what to fcous on. One feels strongly working through this book that Blackburned put lots of care into this book, for the purpose just described. There are sections just on endgames, composed problems, and on blindfold games, all arranged and selected with great care, to provide you, the reader, with a chess course. It is funny, that modern authors use far more words, and far more analysis, but impart much less instruction than a book like this, which requires you to learn chess on your own, under the watchful eye of a teacher who knows you can do it, with a nudge here and there, and by pointing you in the right direction. This book gets my highest recommendation.
