Book Description

This book provides an introduction to the analysis of interaction effects in logistic regression by focusing on the interpretation of the coefficients of interactive logistic models for a wide range of situations encountered in the research literature. The volume is oriented toward the applied researcher with a rudimentary background in multiple regression and logistic regression and does not include complex formulas that could be intimidating to the applied researcher.

4 out of 5 stars Logistic Regression Analyses.......2006-03-08

Overall, the book was very helpful but its value to the uninitiated would be enhanced if it offered more explicit instructions for the entering, analyses and interpretation of SPSS and SAS outputs. As written, it is sound from the standpoint of theoretical mathematics; however, it assumes the reader has training in advanced statistics. I would recommend it to those with such training and do so without reservations. However, those looking for a step by step approach to the application and interpretation of logistic regression analysis will find the book to be of limited assistance.

    Book Description

What techniques can social scientists use when an outcome variable for a sample (for example, y) is not representative of the population for which generalized results are preferred? Author Richard Breen provides an introduction to regression models for such data, including censored, sample-selected, and truncated data. Regression Models begins with a discussion of the Tobit model and examines issues such as maximum likelihood estimation and the interpretation of parameters. The author next discusses the basic sample selection model and the truncated regression model. Elaborating on the modeling of censored and sample-selected data via maximum likelihood, he shows the close links between the models introduced and other regression models for non-continuous dependent variables, such as the ordered probit. Concluding with an exploration of some of the criticisms of these approaches and difficulties associated with them, this volume gives readers a guide to the practical utility of these models.

      Book Description

"Mathematics of Uncertainty" provides the basic ideas and foundations of uncertainty, covering the fields of mathematics in which uncertainty, variability, imprecision and fuzziness of data are of importance. This introductory book describes the basic ideas of the mathematical fields of uncertainty from simple interpolation to wavelets, from error propagation to fuzzy sets and neural networks. The book presents the treatment of problems of interpolation and approximation, as well as observation fuzziness which can essentially influence the preciseness and reliability of statements on functional relationships. The notions of randomness and probability are examined as a model for the variability of observation and measurement results. Besides these basic ideas the book also presents methods of qualitative data analysis such as cluster analysis and classification, and of evaluation of functional relationships such as regression analysis and quantitative fuzzy data analysis.

      Book Description

This book gives an up-to-date, rigorous, and lucid treatment of the theory, methods, and applications of regression analysis. It is ideally suited for those interested in the theory of regression analysis as well as to those whose interests lie primarily with applications. It is further enhanced through real-life examples drawn from many disciplines showing the difficulties typically encountered in the practice of the craft of regression analysis. Consequently, this book provides a sound foundation in the theory of this important subject. "I found this to be the most complete and up-to-date regression text I have come across...this text has much to offer." Journal of the American Statistical Association "The material is presented in a lucid and easy-to-understand style...can be ranked as one of the best textbooks on regression in the market." Mathematical Reviews "...a successful mix of theory and practice...It will serve nicely to teach both the logic behind regression and the data-analytic use of regression." SIAM Review

      Book Description

"Here is another, number 106, of the concise, practical, and economical little paperbacks in the publisher''s Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences Series. . . . this is one of the best. . . . the author systematically presents each aspect of MLR practice, then introduces the corresponding aspect of logistic regression analysis (LRA) by the method of comparison and contrast. It is a very effective style. . . . The book is well written and interesting to read in its entirety. Concepts are clearly presented, logically motivated, and effectively illustrated. . . . Any statistician would be proud to have written this book." --Technometrics Aimed at the student or professional whose statistical background may not extend beyond ordinary least squares multiple regression analysis, Brown introduces logistic regression as an extension of linear regression and emphasizes the parallels between the two. Unique features of the book include detailed consideration of goodness of fit and indices of predictive efficiency, standardized logistic regression coefficients, and the use of existing SPSS and SAS software for loglinear and logit models to calculate logistic regression models for polytomous nominal and ordinal dependent variables. With an emphasis on application of computer statistical packages rather than theorems and proofs, Brown offers a nontechnical and applied introduction to this useful topic.

5 out of 5 stars Very understandable and a bargain.......2005-08-21

I bought this book to teach myself logistic regression after buying a much much more expensive text . If you've had the experience of trying to learn a stats technique on your own then you know that you'll probably need more than one book. If I could go back, I would buy this one first and then move on to other more expensive and comprehensive texts. I had a good grasp of multiple regression already and found this book's orientation to logistic regression, done by drawing parallels with multiple regression, very understandable. It was easy to read cover to cover and gave great explanations of the background math, without being at all heavy with formulas. If you are taking a logistic regression course and are having a hard time following the explinations in the text assigned for the class, this would likely provide a good alternative for helping you grasp the concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Over view.......2001-11-15

Prof Scott Menard must be commended for writing an excellent book on Logistic Regression. Explaining it in the context of commercially available software packages is a very good idea. I was able replicate some his analysis using SAS on the data set used in this book (available on line from ICPSR, Univ of Michigan).

I eagerly await the next edition of this monograph. Thank you!

      3 out of 5 stars A Nice Overview.......2000-10-15

A good, cheap overview of logistic regression analysis.

I bought and I'm glad I did, but I don't refer to it like I do Hosmer and Lemeshow's text.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Logistic Regression.......2000-04-12

As its title suggests, this book is an excellent guide to using logistic regression in data analysis. I purchased this book because I needed to do several logistic regression runs for my dissertation. It turned out to be an extremely useful book for two reasons. First, it presents logistic regression alongside more traditional ordinary least squares (OLS) models. Therefore, if you already have a good understanding of OLS models, this book is very easy to follow. Second, its discussion of logistic regression issues in the context of SPSS or SAS makes it very easy to follow along with your own data analysis as you move through the book. Since statistical packages are always improving, this does date the book a little. However, this is a very minor concern. I believe Dr. Menard is to be commended for including issues regarding popular software packages in this work.

When compared to SAS's documentation, this book's greatest advantage is explaining in english (rather than mathematical notation) the assumptions and limitations of SAS's (and SPSS'S) algorithms. Its chapter on logistic regression diagnostics is alone worth the price of the book. In short, if you need to use logistic regression analysis and you already understand OLS, you cannot go wrong with this book.

        Book Description

The International Conference for Robust Statistics 2003, ICORS 2003, took place at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, from July 13-18. The conference was intended to be a forum where all aspects of robust statistics could be discussed. As such the scientific program included a wide range of talks on new developments and practice of robust statistics, with applications to finance, chemistry, engineering, and other fields. Of equal interest were interactions between robustness and other fields of statistics, and science in general.

This volume offers a wide range of papers that were presented at the conference. Several articles primarily contain new methods and theoretical results, while others investigate empirical properties, discuss computational aspects, or emphasize applications of robust methods. Many contributions contain links to other fields, such as computer vision, computational geometry, chemometrics and finance.

Intended for both researchers and practitioners, this book will be a valuable resource for studying and applying recent robust statistical methods.

5 out of 5 stars Training the searchers of the future .......2006-12-06

The search for extraterrestial intelligence is ordinarily thought of as the work of a small group of scientists. This book is an educational project aimed at involving larger segments of the public in this project, and goal. The book is structured as a guide for teachers, and contains exercises in which the students are to use their imaginations to think up for instance , new missions to outer space, or new forms of life which might be sent to populate places outside the Earth.
All of this has the signature of Carl Sagan on it. Sagan from the time he was a small child dreamed of communicating with extraterrestial intelligences, believed there were other minds on other worlds. As a senior scientist he has been perhaps more than any other the moving force in the program to investigate the cosmos and search for extraterrestial intelligence.
This book provides a basic outline of the issues involved, and too gives a picture of the development of intelligence on earth.
This may be an extremely wise investment for the future.

                5 out of 5 stars Dinosaur heaven.......2006-12-14

We have this book and several other from this series. My three year old thinks these are the greatest books ever.

The only problem I have with them is I sometimes have to read the 6 or 7 times a night.

5 out of 5 stars My son loves it........2006-02-27

An excellent book. My son loves it. He has the other 3-4 books that has been written by Jane Yolen and falls within the same dinosaur theme.
