      Book Description

The book starts with a detailed description of ICP-MS, including quadruple-based, sector-based and time-of-flight instruments. Instrumentation from existing manufacturers is described and compared to show their similarities and differences. Also, a review of the ICP-MS literature is carried out to outline both the strengths and limitations of the technique, whatever its brand, as well as what it can currently accomplish in terms of applications. Then, the book demonstrates how these limitations can be reduced and/or eliminated by combining various techniques with ICP-MS. Great detail is provided on each technique so that the reader can get a good understanding of it before carrying on to the instrumental requirements for its hyphenation to ICP-MS, and the resulting impact on the operation of the hyphenated instrument. Since this book is concerned with the ICP side only, which is fairly similar in all the instruments from the different manufacturers, the information should be useful to all ICP-MS users. The features and limitations of each technique are thoroughly discussed and illustrated with a review of the ICP-MS literature. Approaches which could be used but have not yet been tried with ICP-MS are also suggested. This is particularly true of flow injection techniques which are extremely flexible and have been used extensively in atomic spectroscopy and spectrophotometry. Many of the features of the technique have not yet been combined to ICP-MS, and one purpose of the book will be to point out potentially beneficial combinations.

                Book Description

This atlas is the only compilation of spectral data which provides the analyst with a general view of the elemental spectra emitted by the ICP. Coincidence profiles enable the analyst to assess the relative liabilities of prominent analytical lines to a variety of spectral interference types. The data presented are all based on actual spectra emitted by ICPs operated under the optimized conditions usually employed for sample analysis.

The work is composed of three main sections, the first being concerned with the historical aspects of compilations of spectral information. The second part is based on 232 wavelength scans of 70 elements. Each of the wavelength scans covers an 80 nm spectral region. These scans allow a rapid comparison of the background and spectral line intensities emitted in the ICP and provide a ready means for identifying the most prominent lines of each element and for estimating the trace element analytical capabilities of these lines. A listing of 973 prominent lines with associated detection limits is also given. The third part addresses the problem of spectral interferences and contains a detailed collection of coincidence profiles for 281 of the most prominent lines, each with profiles of 10 of the most prevalent comcomitants superposed. These profiles illustrate normal line overlap interferences as well as clarify interferences arising from recombination continua, line broadening, background features (argon and hydrogen lines and molecular bands), and of special significance, interferences arising from numerous lines not listed in the major wavelength tables. The 10 elements chosen as interferents cover a large number of the interferences that will be encountered in the analysis of samples of biological, environmental, and geological origin.

                    Description:
Concentrations of Ag, Al, Ba, Be, Ga, La, Mo, Se, Si, Tl, and V in the date palm (Fard cultivar) were investigated. The study revealed that Ba and La levels in the leaves and Tl levels in the fruit were similar to those in the soil, implying that the date palm could act as an indicator species for these elements. In addition, accumulation of Ag, Ba, and La in the dates was observed. Furthermore, there may be a connection between the presence of Ag, Ba, La, Se, Tl, in the date palm tissues and the alternate bearing effect.

5 out of 5 stars Recent research results on behaviour of the domestic horse.......2007-01-11

This is a very interesting book giving an overview on recent research results of horse behaviour. The text also gives a lot of relevant references. In addition to many other books on equine behaviour, this one addresses the impact of the domestic environment on horse behaviour with special emphasis on riding and training. I would very much recommend that book for everybody interested in horses, however, a certain knowledge on behaviour is necessary for understanding.

                      Book Description

Statisticians of the Centuries aims to demonstrate the achievements of statistics to a broad audience, and to commemorate the work of celebrated statisticians. This is done through short biographies that put the statistical work in its historical and sociological context, emphasizing contributions to science and society in the broadest terms rather than narrow technical achievement. The discipline is treated from its earliest times and only individuals born prior to the 20th Century are included. The volume arose through the initiative of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), the principal representative association for international statistics (founded in 1885). Extensive consultations within the statistical community, and with prominent members of ISI in particular, led to the names of the 104 individuals who are included in the volume. The biographies were contributed by 73 authors from across the world. The editors are the well-known statisticians Chris Heyde and Eugene Seneta. Chris Heyde is Professor of Statistics at both Columbia University in New York and the Australian National University in Canberra. Eugene Seneta is Professor of Mathematical Statistics at the University of Sydney and a Member of the ISI. His historical writings focus on 19th Century France and the Russian Empire. Both editors are Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science and have, at various times, been awarded the Pitman Medal of the Statistical Society of Australia for their distinguished research contributions.

5 out of 5 stars over 100 biographies from Cardano to Deming.......2007-08-14

This is a wonderful collection of biographies of the world's leading probabilists and statisticians beginning with Cardano (1501-1576) and ending with Deming (1900-1993). Along the way we learn about the lives and contributions of 103 individuals by 75 experts in the field. For professional statisticians like myself it is interesting to learn about the lives of so many of the famous statisticians whose work we are very familiar with. Included among those that are very well-known are R. A. Fisher, W. S, Gosset (Student), W. E. Deming, W. Shewhart, H. Cramer, H. Hotelling, E. S. Pearson, K. Pearson, G. Cox, F. Wilcoxon, E. Gumbel, A. A. Markov, F. Galton, J. Neyman, G. W. Snedecor, P. C. Mahalanobis, J. W. Lindeberg, C. E. Bonferroni, C. E. Gauss, P. L. Chebyshev, F. Y. Edgeworth, G. Snedecor, R. von Mises, T. Bayes and more. But even more interesting to me are the many names that I had never heard of and was curious to read about including, F. A. Shcherbina, G. H. Knibbs. A. L. Bowley, H. E. Hurst, P. D. En'ko, G. von Mayr, and J. P. Sussmilch. This book is fun to read. Each statistician has a picture or portrait included and there is lots to learn about the men and women and the profession. With any list there are always some that you wonder how they could be excluded. For me, W. Feller and A. Wald are glaring omissions. None of my favorite contemporaries are there but this i sprobably because the list is restricted to those who are deceased.

I highly recommend this book for the general interest reader. It contains a number of short, but informative, essays, each covering ,on average,2-10 pages. Each essay gives a short biography of an individual scholar who has made a relevant contribution to either theoretical or applied statistics or probability. The contribution is assessed and discussed. Those covered include Sir Ronald Fisher,de Finetti,Ramsey,Savage,Galton,Yule,Karl and Egon Pearson, Harold Jeffreys, and W. Lexis,to name just a few.Surprisingly, the contributions of John Maynard Keynes,George Boole and Benoit Mandelbrot to applied probability and statistics are not covered although each is briefly mentioned in essays covering others. Thus, for instance,Keynes is mentioned in the essay on Frank Ramsey, but no clue is provided the reader about Keynes's original contribution to probability, which was the first systematic exposition of an interval estimate approach to probability analysis based on the work of George Boole.Keynes's contribution is contained in chapters 5,10,15,17 and Part III of his 1921 masterpiece,A Treatise on Probability.Mandelbrot's work, demonstating that there is little,if any, support for the overwhelming use of the normal probability distribution in the study of price movements in financial, stock and commodity markets by financial analysts and economists, calls into question the entire foundation of financial theory that has been built upon the Capital Asset Pricing Model(CAPM)and the Black-Scholes equation. This reviewer feels that the editors could of at least devoted three pages to each of the above mentioned scholars.

                        Book Description

This relatively nontechnical book is the first account of the history of statistics from the Fisher revolution to the computer revolution. It sketches the careers, and highlights of some of the work, of 65 people, most of them statisticians. What gives the book its special character is its emphasis on the author's interaction with these people and the inclusion of many personal anecdotes.

Combined, these portraits provide a panoramic view of statistics during the period in question. Included are discussions of such topics as nonparametrics, Bayesian approaches, and data analysis. The stress is on ideas and technical material is held to a minimum. Thus the book is accessible to anyone with at least an elementary background in statistics.

"As I was packaging what remained of the dead baby, the man I would kill was burning pavement north toward Charlotte."

With this opening sentence, Kathy Reichs serves notice that her heroine, Temperance Brennan, is in for one of her scariest, most gruesome adventures yet. As fans of this popular series already know, Tempe is a forensic anthropologist: an expert in the human form (especially bones) who helps solve crimes. The abovementioned infant is only the first in a series of grisly remains, both human and animal, that Tempe must sort through and decode. Meanwhile, as several seemingly unrelated cases begin to intertwine, her sleuthing puts her in the crosshairs of a very nasty stalker who hides behind an e-mail alias.

Reichs knows how to keep the narrative ball rolling with a canny mix of plot developments, character delineation, and scientific detail, all relayed in Tempe's smart, breezy, sarcastic voice. In fact, Bare Bones has a few too many characters and plot lines for Reichs--or most readers--to keep perfect track of. But it's a fun ride anyway, enlivened by some steamy romantic scenes and some fascinating, appalling information about the illicit trade in endangered wildlife (did you know that bears' gall bladders fetch more money per ounce than cocaine?). Bare Bones is a crisp, enjoyable read that cements Kathy Reichs's standing as the best forensic-thriller writer at work today. --Nicholas H. Allison

                            Book Description

"Fans of TV's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation should be in heaven" (People) stepping into the world of forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan, star of Kathy Reichs' electrifyingly authentic bestsellers.

She works with the dead but she works for the living.

"Down time" is not a phrase in Tempe Brennan's vocabulary. A string of disturbing cases has put her vacation plans on hold; instead, she heads to the lab to analyze charred remains from a suspicious fire, and a mysterious black residue from a small plane crash. But most troubling of all are the bones....Tempe's daughter's new boyfriend invites them to a picnic -- a pig pickin' -- in the North Carolina countryside, where a cache of bones turns up. But are they animal or human? X-rays and DNA may link the crimes, but they can't reveal who is closing in on Tempe and her daughter -- and how far they will go to keep her from uncovering the truth.

"It's a summer of sizzling heat in Charlotte where Dr. Temperance Brennan, forensic anthropologist for the North Carolina medical examiner, looks forward to her first vacation in years. A romantic vacation. She's almost out the door when the bones start appearing. A newborn's charred remains turn up in a woodstove. A small plane crashes in a North Carolina cornfield on a sunny afternoon. Both pilot and passenger are burned beyond recognition. And what is the mysterious black substance covering the bodies? Most puzzling of all are the bones discovered at a remote farm outside Charlotte. The remains seem to be of animal origin, but Tempe is shocked when she gets them to her lab. With help from a special detective friend, Tempe must investigate a poignant and terrifying case that comes at the worst possible moment. Daughter Katy has a new boyfriend who Tempe fears may have something to hide. And important personal decisions face Tempe. Is it time for emotional commitment? Will she have the chance to find out? Everything must wait on the bones. Why are the X rays and DNA so perplexing? Who is trying to keep Tempe from the answers? Someone is following her and Katy. That someone must be stopped before it's too late. "

Bare Bones By Kathy Reichs is the story of a forensic anthropologist named Tempe Brennan as she uncovers the Mysteries surrounding the murders of two federal agents, a baby, and many other people. Even though this book sounds exiting I found it to be very boring because of the way the author tells you about every person that Tempe runs into, whether important or not, describing everything about them from what Tempe notices about the bone structure to what they smell like. I also did not like this book because the entire ending is a flashback along with information she was filled in on afterwards. Even though this book has its down sides, it still has a good plot and has many turns in events that surprise the reader. In the book there is also a lot of action, even though most of the action is watered down by the constant rambling of the author. An example of this is when Tempe is in a car with a group of gangsters surrounding her and intimidating her. This makes for high action, but the author starts talking about the bone structure of the group of gangsters and about the group's height and age, which waters down the action of the moment. So overall I thought this book was a boring, but someone who likes books with lots of details would like it.

3 out of 5 stars Too Much Information.......2007-01-16

Bare Bones, a non-fiction novel written by Kathy Reichs, describes the life of forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan. Brennan tries to solve cases involving a dead baby, a missing woman, a drug bust, and a group of uncovered mysterious animal and human bones. Every clue seems to lead to another as though they are all interconnected. The case begins with a plane crash that was said to have been a drug bust gone wrong. Doctor Brennan and her partner, Detective "Skinny" Slidell, are on the case trying to identify the passenger's bodies. In addition to the plane crash, the case of a baby that was burned to death by her former boyfriend has captured Brennan's attention. Along with all of her casework, Brennan is dealing with her daughter's new boyfriend and with her own personal relationship with Detective Andrew Ryan that is growing to be more than just a "business" relationship.
I had a hard time following the story line in this book because there is much information presented in this book that makes it difficult to understand. For example, the short and sarcastic conversations between Brennan and others were confusing because some of them were superfluous and technical. However, as the story progressed, the information began to tie together and when the story ended I had a clear idea of what was happening and I developed an appreciation for Reich's style. I would recommend this book for those who enjoy mysteries, like putting together pieces of a puzzle, and appreciate the surprises off personal relationships.

3 out of 5 stars great book bad ending-Bare Bones.......2007-01-13

The book Bare Bones, written by Kathy Reichs introduces the reader to the world of forensic anthropology through her interesting main character, Temperance Brennan. In the book, Brennan has three cases to solve. As she gets more evidence and brings the clues together she starts to think that all the cases are connected in a very disturbing way. During the book, Brennan has conflicts with co-workers, and gets back into the dating game after a tough divorce. The book was very detailed and is interesting enough to keep the reader turning the page. The end of the book was very dissapointing, even though all the cases were figured out, it seemed as though Katy Reichs just finished the book without the great detail that she had put in the beginning of the book. Despite the quick ending, I thought the book was easy to read and was very interesting. If you are interested in science and lot's of adventure, then Bare Bones is the book for you.

This book is terrific! It is a collection of comic book scripts that not only provides an inside view of how comic books are put together, but also perfectly captures the dialogue and spirit of the 1974 TV series. A couple of the stories are based on semi-completed scripts from that show. The supporting cast of Vincenzo, Updyke, and Miss. Emily are here, and the Kolchak charm and charisma shine through. Forget the pathetic remake that the network executives tried to foist on us. Those of us who remember the 2 telemovies and the Darren McGavin series can enjoy new Kolchak stories in this book.

                              4 out of 5 stars For King-Fans a must.......2000-10-28

This is maybe the most interesting book about Stephen King available. If you want to know something about him, you have to read it, because you won't learn more anywhere else. Not even in his own 'On Writing' by the way.

Maybe it would be interesting too to read more actual interviews, but these one help a lot. Okay, it's not always that interesting, like in the conversation about his radio station and sometimes weird, like in the one about 'Maximum Overdrive' if you have seen it. And of course a lot of things are repeated.

                              But it's really a must for King-fans.

this was a wonderful collection of interviews of Stephen King. It would be interesting to see another collection done, with some of the more recent interviews and thoughts from him.

In this collection of essays, both new Stephen King fans, and SK'ers alike can enjoy a unique, indepth and personal view into the mind of the world's greatest horror writer. In Bare Bones King does just that -- he Bares his Bones, showing us the reader what really goes on inside his head. You are taken down into a dark cavern that few men have traveled into and survived. (Well, at least literarily -- not literally). As stated above, I was so impressed and intrigued by these works that I bought all three copies available: the 1st edition paperback, the first edition hardcover, and number 588 of 1152 limited handnumbered copies. Truly a "missing link" in any King collection. If nothing else, Bare Bones is a "must-read".
