Linked: How Everything Is Connected to Everything Else and What It Means
ASIN: 0521483182 |
Book Description
Fractals and surfaces are two of the most widely-studied areas of modern physics. In fact, most surfaces in nature are fractals. In this book, Drs. Barabási and Stanley explain how fractals can be successfully used to describe and predict the morphology of surface growth. The authors begin by presenting basic growth models and the principles used to develop them. They next demonstrate how models can be used to answer specific questions about surface roughness. In the second half of the book, they discuss in detail two classes of phenomena: fluid flow in porous media and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). In each case, the authors review the model and analytical approach, and present experimental results. This book is the first attempt to unite the subjects of fractals and surfaces, and it will appeal to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. Because of the technological importance of MBE, it will also be of interest to scientists, particularly materials scientists, working in industry and research. Interested readers may view a sample chapter by contacting our web site at http://www.cup.org/onlinepubs/Fractals/fracts1.html.

Good on self affine scaling.......2004-04-14
I'm not into surfaces and have only used a small part of this book for one purpose: for an introduction to self affine scaling. The topic is presented very systematically, with nice examples. Especially nice is the binomial model of multiaffine scaling. Multiaffine scaling is supposed to appear in "soft" fluid turbulence and is often mislabeled multifractal scaling, which is a horse of a different color altogether!
Fractal Concepts in Surface Growth.......2001-05-16
This is the first book I have so far encountered on interface growth to treat the subject in a simple, intuitive and entertaining manner. All the basic mathematical concepts are explained, the book is easy to read and contains plenty of illustrations and examples from real life. Barabasi and Stanley show how processes ranging from accumulation of snow on car windows, to bacterial colony growth on agar surfacees, are governed by similiar mathematical laws. Exercises are conceptual as well as mathematical, with many questions asking for discussion or further research. This book is essential for novices and experts alike.

Book Description
Silicon, the basic material for a multibillion-dollar industry, is the most widely researched and applied semiconductor, and its surfaces are the most thoroughly studied of all semiconductor surfaces. Silicon Surfaces and Formation of Interfaces may be used as an introduction to graduate-level physics and chemical physics. Moreover, it gives a specialized and comprehensive description of the most common faces of silicon crystals as well as their interaction with adsorbates and overlayers. This knowledge is presented in a systematic and easy-to-follow way. Discussion of each system is preceded by a brief overview which categorizes the features and physical mechanisms before the details are presented. The literature is easily available, and the references are numerous and organized in tables, allowing a search without the need to browse through the text.
Though this volume focuses on a scientific understanding of physics on the atomistic and mesoscopic levels, it also highlights existing and potential links between basic research in surface science and applications in the silicon industry. It will be valuable to anyone writing a paper, thesis, or proposal in the field of silicon surfaces.

Environmental Chemistry at the Interface.......2004-06-09
This is an outstanding text written by an internationally recognized authority in the field of surface geochemistry of aqueous systems. Reactions on particle surfaces in freshwaters, soils and aquifers are among the most important chemical processes affecting water quality and biogeochemical cycles. In this book, Dr. Sposito builds upon the foundations of his earlier (1984) popular advanced textbook, "The Surface Chemistry of Soils", to synthesize and highlight new findings and conceptual understandings that have resulted from active research worldwide over the past 20 years into the interfacial chemistry of natural particles. The text emphasizes mechanistic interpretations of surface chemistry, as revealed by a thoughtful synthetic review of macroscopic, kinetic, modeling and spectroscopic studies.
The book would be a fine choice as a text for graduate level courses in aqueous surface geochemistry. It will be read widely and referenced often by practitioners in this active field of science.

Book Description
New analytical methods have provided further insight into the structure, surface characteristics, and chemistries of increasingly small particles. However, current literature offers information on only a limited number of powders being investigated. Written by renowned scientists in the field, Powders and Fibers: Interfacial Science and Applications examines the most appropriate characterization methods for analyzing powders and fibers. Using these techniques, the authors explore the formation and roles of various multiphase interfaces. They consider the potential for enhancing performance and highlight related applications, particularly for powders and fibers. The book details characteristics such as morphology, surface energetics, surface ionization, and electrokinetics for solid-gas, solid-rubber, solid-solid, solid-liquid, and biological interfaces. Areas of multidisciplinary interest also include the adsorption of biomolecules and biocompatibility of powders and fibers, nanoparticles and nanocomposites, biochips, and other biomedical applications, the measurement and significance of wettability, recent rheological data on mixes, and computer simulations used for visualizing complex solid surfaces. As interest in the behavior and applications of powders and fibers steadily increases, Powders and Fibers: Interfacial Science and Applications offers a diverse approach that bridges fundamental aspects of interfacial science with applications of powders and fibers that is useful for newcomers as well as practitioners in related fields.

Book Description
The authors illustrate the basic physics and materials science of conjugated polymers and their interfaces, particularly, but not exclusively, as they are applied to polymer-based light emitting diodes. The approach is to describe the basic physical and associated chemical principles that apply to these materials, which in many instances are different from those that apply to their inorganic counterparts. The main aim of the authors is to highlight specific issues and properties of polymer surfaces and interfaces that are relevant in the context of the emerging field of polymer-based electronics in general, and polymer-based light emitting diodes in particular. Both theoretical and experimental methods used in the study of these systems are discussed. This book will be of interest to graduate students and research workers in departments of physics, chemistry, electrical engineering and materials sciences studying polymer surfaces and interfaces and their application in polymer-based electronics.

Book Description
Electrochemistry is the study of a special class of interfaces--those between an ionic and an electronic conductor--that can conduct current. This makes it especially important to research and for industrial applications such as semiconductors. This book examines different topics within interfacial electrochemistry, including the theory of structures and processes at metal- solution and semiconductor-solution interfaces, the principles of classical and modern experimental methods, and some of the applications of electrochemistry. Students and nonspecialists in materials science, surface science, and chemistry will find this a valuable source of information.

Customer Reviews:
Good Daily Reading.......2007-01-10
This will not do for a daily devotional. With that being said, the daily portions are small enough that even an intellectual "non-Christian" as well as any Christian can read and enjoy. I include the intellectual non-Christian because the ideas in the book are weighty. It applies to the Christian because they are weighty ideas that are in support of the Christian world-view. It is a quick daystarter that will also give you insight into the works of C.S. Lewis and may inspire the reader to actually read his edifying literature. I recommend this to add to your daily read, not to replace it.

A Year with C.S. Lewis.......2006-11-04
I have been readung daily meditations/modivational readings for as long as I can remember. I find this this is probably the most useful in that it covers all aspects of one's life. I find myself unconsciously nodding my head as I read. I would highly recommend this book to all of my friends. It is amazing how much better your day is when you get your brain primed early in the day.
Daily C. S. Lewis fix for familiar readers.......2006-10-17
If you are familiar with the works of C. S. Lewis, then this book is for you. It contains snippets of trivia about his life in addition to a passage a day from his numerous works. However, I would recommend this book to those who've already read and reflected on at least one of his other books in its entirety. You can then appreciate how Lewis develops his complex thoughts and arguments through many chapters, not just one paragraph. This book of daily readings can then be used as a starting point to refresh you on a bit of insight that will lead you to greater reflection of your faith.
If you haven't read his books, at best you will be piqued by these appetizers to look forward to the entrees of his books. At worst this book of daily readings will be just another collection of daily thoughts.
I love the way C. S. Lewis articulates his thoughts, and it gives me great pleasure when I chew on what he says and gain that insight. I wish other Christian writers today would take the same time to meditate and share their wisdom, instead of churn out book after book that defines today's pop-Christian culture.
Pure Solid Lewis, Every Day of the Year.......2006-05-08
C.S. Lewis is valued by many as one of the clearest and most lucid voices of reason in 20th Century Christianity.
Clive Staples Lewis, (Jack to his friends) wrestled as an younger adult with his belief in God, having embraced agnosticism as the only truly valid position to be taken by an intellectually honest person. A highly intelligent man, he could not simply accept on blind faith, the tenets of Christianity. However, in large part due to the influence of fellow literary professor J.R.R. Tolkien, Lewis came to wrestle with Christianity and came to the conclusion that it was indeed rationale and defensible and thus was born a literary and apologetics career that spanned radio programs, children's books, science fiction and several well loved and highly influential apologetic tomes.
This daily reader puts together a wonderful collection of pithy passages and thoughts that will serve as part of a daily devotional regimen (not all of it though ... I suspect Lewis himself would not want reading his works to replace reading Scripture.) Each selection stands well on its own and captures the genius of Lewis in taking an often difficult concept and reducing it to an acecdotal story that bring clarity and understanding.
An excellent collection and a worthy daily regimen.
Meditation for your life.......2006-03-25
The Book of C.S.Lewis cover a lot of thinks concerning our daily activities, so, it's a moment of quiet when I stop in order to read it.
