    Book Description

Fourier Transform Spectrometry is of immediate use to those who use Fourier transform spectrometers in their research, or are considering their use. The authors' presentations enable readers to obtain a clear understanding of FTS, which is crucial to their studies and research.

Due to the increasing complexity and commercialization of instrumentation, achieving optimum performance in research applications and automated usage can be challenging. For example, a thorough understanding of the instrument can dramatically affect the outcome of the experiment and the generation of reliable data in applications where conditions are not ideal and resulting signals are weak. This book provides a comprehensive discussion of FTS from the ground up, covering basic concepts, instrumentation, data-processing algorithms, and techniques for computerized spectral analysis.

    4 out of 5 stars FTIR Bible.......2000-09-30

This is a great reference for anyone designing or using FTIR instruments. This book is really intended for the advanced users and is worth the price. The only major drawback is that it is getting a little dated.

The book is really geared to the chemist, however, additional material on alignment techniques and a more complete and jointed discussion on design trade-offs and instrument characterization would make it much more useful to other users.

Bottom line: It is still a great reference

4 out of 5 stars The Classic Reference on FTIR.......2000-09-01

This book is the Bible of FTIR, written by the twin gods of FTIR, Griffiths and DeHaseth. It contains as complete an introduction to the theory and practice of this field as is available. Anyone who wants a detailed understanding of this field, and in particular how FTIRs work, should own this book. However...there are 2 reasons why I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5.

    1. The book is written at a rather advanced level, and is full of mathematics. For doctorate level scientists and engineers this is fine, but it blows away anyone without the appropriate math and science background. As a result, beginners to the field are often times frustrated with this book. The book is more approriate for instrument designers and lab managers than it is for the average technician running spectra.

    2. The book was written in 1986, and parts of it are terribly outdated. Not surprisingly, discussions of specific computers, software, and instruments were outdated years ago. Things that the book predicts will happen, have long ago come to pass. Certain important new developments, such as IR Microscopy, FT-Raman, and new applications of Step Scanning, are totally missing. Come on guys...its time for a new edition.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A861293. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Of the many problems currently being tackled by astrophysicists, two are of particular interest to spectroscopists and molecular physicists. These are emission observed from numerous objects in the infrared region in the interstellar medium and the absorption seen in the near infrared and visible regions. It is generally accepted that the species giving rise to these spectral features are gaseous molecules (or radical or ions), and not dust particles or grains. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are one class of molecules which have been proposed as carriers of these features. In this dissertation, the effect of visible/UV irradiation on several PAHs is studied in detail. FT-ICR mass spectrometry was used to determine the photolysis products of the ionized PAHs fluorene, naphthalene and 1,2-benzanthracene in the vapor phase by irradiation with a xenon arc lamp. Products of ion-molecule reactions were also characterized for all three PAHs. Broad-band visible and ultraviolet irradiation of ionized fluorene for relatively short times (^0.5s) is shown to lead predominantly to sequential hydrogen atom loss, with one to five hydrogens lost. Rate constants and branching ratios for the photodecomposition of the fluorene parent ion and its dehydrogenated partners have been determined. Longer irradiation times lead to various products resulting from multiple C-C bond cleavages. Density functional calculations are used to show dehydrogenation first occurs from the sp(sup 3) carbon on the five-membered ring and then from only one of the six membered rings.

        Book Description

Written by spectroscopists for spectroscopists, here is a book which is not only a valuable handbook and reference work, but also an ideal teaching text for Fourier transform methods as they are applied in spectroscopy. It offers the first unified treatment of the three most popular types of FT/spectroscopy, with uniform notation and complete indexing of specialized terms. All mathematics is self-contained, and requires only a knowledge of simple calculus. The main emphasis is on pictures and physical analogs rather than detailed algebra. Instructive problems, presented at the end of each chapter, offer extensions of the basic treatment. Solutions are given or outlined for all problems.

The book offers a wealth of practical information to spectroscopists. Non-ideal effects are treated in detail: noise (source- and detector-limited); non-linear response; limits to spectrometer performance based on finite detection period, finite data size, mis-phasing, etc. Common puzzles and paradoxes are explained: e.g. use of mathematically complex variables to represent physically real quantities; interpretation of negative frequency signals; on-resonance vs. off-resonance response; interpolation (when it helps and when it doesn't); ultimate accuracy of the data; differences between linearly- and circularly-polarized radiation; multiplex advantage or disadvantage, etc.

Chapter 1 introduces the fundamental line shapes encountered in spectroscopy, from a simple classical mass-on-a-spring model. The Fourier transform relationship between the time-domain response to a sudden impulse and the steady-state frequency-domain response (absorption and dispersion spectra) to a continuous oscillation is established and illustrated. Chapters 2 and 3 summarize the basic mathematics (definitions, formulas, theorems, and examples) for continuous (analog) and discrete (digital) Fourier transforms, and their practical implications. Experimental aspects which are common to the signal (Chapter 4) and noise (Chapter 5) in all forms of Fourier transform spectrometry are followed by separate chapters for treatment of those features which are unique to FT/MS, FT/optical, FT/NMR, and other types of FT/spectroscopy.

The list of references includes both historical and comprehensive reviews and monographs, along with articles describing several key developments. The appendices provide instant access to FT integrals and fast algorithms as well as a pictorial library of common Fourier transform function pairs. The comprehensive index is designed to enable the reader to locate particular key words, including those with more than one name.

5 out of 5 stars Fourier transforms and spectroscopy.......2001-12-15

This book applies the theory of Fourier transforms to their use in spectroscopy, based on using graphical examples to illustrate the mathematical properties discussed. It is useful for areas of spectroscopy other than those in the titles, since the concepts are applicable to many FT methods of data acquisition. Especially recommended for beginners trying to learn about the implications of FT techniques in their research.

            Description:
In this work it has been shown that the routine ASTM methods (ASTM 4052, ASTM D 445, ASTM D 4737, ASTM D 93, and ASTM D 86) recommended by the ANP (the Brazilian National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels) to determine the quality of diesel/biodiesel blends are not suitable to prevent the adulteration of B2 or B5 blends with vegetable oils. Considering the previous and actual problems with fuel adulterations in Brazil, we have investigated the application of vibrational spectroscopy (Fourier transform (FT) near infrared spectrometry and FT-Raman) to identify adulterations of B2 and B5 blends with vegetable oils. Partial least square regression (PLS), principal component regression (PCR), and artificial neural network (ANN) calibration models were designed and their relative performances were evaluated by external validation using the F-test. The PCR, PLS, and ANN calibration models based on the Fourier transform (FT) near infrared spectrometry and FT-Raman spectroscopy were designed using 120 samples. Other 62 samples were used in the validation and external validation, for a total of 182 samples. The results have shown that among the designed calibration models, the ANN/FT-Raman presented the best accuracy (0.028%, w/w) for samples used in the external validation.

              Description:
By means of liquid Fourier transform-middle infrared spectrometry, it is possible to analyse wine and must within 90s simultaneously on a significant number of important parameters like alcohol, relative density, extract, sugar-free extract, refraction, conductivity, glycerol, total phenols, reducing sugar, fructose, glucose, sucrose, total acid, pH value, volatile acid, total SO"2 and tartaric acid, malic acid, lactic acid and citric acid. Within a short time, it is possible to obtain information on the chemical composition of the product and it is useful to monitor the changes in chemical composition from beginning of grape ripening, must and fermentation to finished wines. Additionally, it is possible to obtain a fingerprint of the products which can serve as an identity check for quality management and production control. In the first part, a sample set with 327 typical German wines from 1989 to 2001 were analysed using Fourier transform-middle infrared spectrometry (FT-MIR) and also with different reference methods. In the second part, the results of a Ring test with 52 typical wines from each of 13 German wine regions are discussed. The results from this study demonstrated that a calibration model could be transferred between FT-MIR machines with the same hardware. The inter-laboratory reproducibility proved to be satisfactory and the instrument results were comparable with those obtained by the ''classical reference methods''.

                  Description:
Chemical imaging techniques, based on the combination of microscopy and spectroscopy, are well suited to study both the composition and the spatial organization of heterogeneous complex mixtures of organic and mineral matter. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), followed by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and Fourier transform infrared microscopy (FTIR microscopy) have been applied to non-destructive analysis of micro-samplings of ritual matters deposited on the surface of African wooden statuettes. With a very careful preparation, using ultramicrotomy on embedded samples, it was possible to perform successively all the measurements on a single fragment. Comparison and superposition of the different chemical images, obtained on a sample from a significant actual artefact, have allowed us to identify minerals (clays, quartz and calcium carbonate), proteins, starch, urate salts and lipids and to map their spatial distribution.

                  Book Description

Just Before the Origin presents the theory of evolution through natural selection as it was developed by Russel Wallace and published in several essays written from 1848 through 1858, before Darwin’s Origin of the Species in 1889. And yet, Russel Wallace is almost unknown.

John Langdon Brooks acts as a scientific detective as he reveals Wallace’s theories and compares the insights of both men in this fascinating study.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting background, but an axe to grind.......2003-03-26

This is an interesting companion to reading Wallace in the original, and Brooks does a reasonably good job of portraying his subject, although more recent books e.g. Tim Severin's SPICE ISLANDS VOYAGE is perhaps more entertaining if more pop. More troubling is his almost personal vendetta against Charles Darwin, in which he sets out to "prove" that Darwin "stole" the idea of evolution by Natural Selection from Wallace -something that Wallace himself NEVER suggested or implied. After an exhaustive search through shipping company records & an examination of the postal service (one must admire Brooks' zeal if not his motive)he is essentially back where he started: personally convinced but with a lot of speculation & one-sided interpretations of material. The sad part of this ... is that a) it takes away from Wallace's enormous contributions in a wide range of areas -he is responsible for most of the foundations of modern Biogeography for instance- b) it implies a craven motive for Wallace's supposed silence-in-the-face-of-persecution (Does Brooks REALLY think that someone so feisty & outspoken as Wallace, who took on everything from land reform to vaccination, would simply cave in to "The Establishment" over a matter of priority? c) ignores the real scope of Darwin's scholarship & d) smacks of sensationalism. This is silly. Wallace was a marvellous man and a wonderful scientist. Enjoy the first parts of this book & consign Brooks' idle speculations to where they belong: ...

5 out of 5 stars Darwin's and our debt to Wallace.......2002-02-03

The theory of evolution by natural selection is often thought of as being THE grand theory of biology. Where do revolutionary intellectual advances come from and how does the human community absorb them? Such questions are raised by the history of science and books like Just Before The Origin.

Is science the triumphant march of objective truth being revealed by noble seekers of the truth or is science polluted by human ambition just like any other human endeavor? Was Darwin the saintly seeker of the truth we learned about in school or a mere mortal? If he was a mere mortal, how did he achieve the great revolution in evolutionary thought?

Extraordinary ideas must be rooted in extraordinary human experiences. We are taught that Darwin was the prepared mind in the right place at the right time, that his voyage around the world opened his eyes to patterns in the geographical variations in the diversity of life. If so, why did so many years pass between his voyage and the publication of his ideas on evolution? Might it be important that in science, as in all of life, it is not just what you know but who your friends are?

The conventional rationalization for Darwin's delay in publishing on natural selection is multi-fold. First, it seems likely that Darwin feared the very nature of his discovery. He could well imagine the outrage that would be stimulated by any theory that finally toppled the Judeo-Christian view of man as having been created by God in His image. Second, because of that fear, Darwin felt compelled to marshal a large amount of supporting data, enough to ensure that announcement of his theory would be decisive and able to withstand all resistance.

There is third component to the conventional story that seems to explain what finally ended Darwin's dithering over the theory. Alfred Wallace was ready to publish his own version of the theory based on his own extensive observations as a naturalist.

John Langdon's analysis of Wallace's work suggests a variation on the standard theme. What if Darwin's main reason for delay in publication was personal dissatisfaction with his theory, not dissatisfaction with the amount or quality of supporting evidence? What if it was Wallace's more extensive data set that provided the basis for the key idea that finally overcame Darwin's own lack of faith in the theory of natural selection, finally allowing Darwin the courage to publish? And what if Darwin never admitted this critical role of Wallace's work?

Since the dawn of Western Science, research proposals and manuscripts have been submitted to respected scientific peers in order that well considered decisions can be made about the support of research and the publication of new ideas. Most agree that it is wrong for a senior scientist to read the ideas of a young scientist, appropriate those ideas and exploit them, while at the same time rejecting the requests of the young scientist for support or publication of completed work. And yet, scientists are only human. What if you have worked on a problem for 20 years, for many years feeling on the verge of a breakthrough, then one sad day you realize that some young upstart has reached the finish line before you? This is the most delicate question raised by Langdon's book. What did Darwin do when confronted with this situation?

In our society, science is a source of fame, wealth, and power. Those who wield this power defend the existing system. If a few eggs get broken, a few Wallaces get handed the dirty end of the stick, well, that's life. Its a dog eat dog world out there, and only the fittest can be expected to survive. Such is the standard view. But life is change. What is the origin of change? Even a mighty dinosaur might be replaced by a small mouse. Listen for a squeaking sound coming Just Before The Origin.

Brooks' object in this book was twofold. First, he wanted to provide a thorough review of the early influences on Wallace that led him to the theory of natural selection. Second, he wished to investigate the possibility that Charles Darwin may have stolen some of Wallace's ideas to complete his "On the Origin of Species." Brooks has been criticized some in the first regard for not thoroughly investigating external influences on Wallace, but I personally feel this hurts the book relatively little. I am more concerned about the second emphasis. While Brooks does a very good job of marshalling all available evidence to make his point, he is not really successful (that is to say, convincing) in doing so; moreover, my personal slant on this is that Wallace had so much that was interesting to say in his own right that the matter of the Darwin-Wallace affair is more of a distraction than anything else. Nevertheless, the book is well worth reading, either by professionals within the field of history of science or evolutionary biology, or by the educated layperson interested in natural history and how science manages to proceed, sometimes in spite of itself.

                        Book Description

In the footsteps of Jane Tennison, immortalized by Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect, comes Anna Travis, a rookie female detective about to embark on her first murder case. The murders couldn't be more gruesome. The method of killing is identical, the backgrounds of the girls very similar -- all are prostitutes. As the book opens, a seventh body is found, same modus operandi but the victim this time is a sweet young student. Anna stumbles on a vital piece of information that links one man to the killings, a well-known, much-loved actor. His protestation of innocence is convincing, and Anna might be succumbing to his flattering attention. What if he is arrested, the media erupts, and he is the wrong man?

Nothing could be more trite and predictable that almost every detail of Above Suspicion. If you even occasionally read crime fiction, you'll recognize every plot device and character in this novel. This is a poorly written book, the likes of which have been published literally dozens and dozens of times before. New cop Ms. Travis is pretty, but quite self conscious. She is now working a tough serial-killer case (her first murder investigation), and she's really trying to live up to the memory of her father, a great police detective. Even though she has zero experience in murder cases, she seems to consistently make breakthroughs so the investigation can move forward.

Any good assignment in this investigation is given to her, so she can flirt and blush and simper around her boss. The chief suspect is coming onto her, and ooohh, it's so flattering that I can't ever be sure if he's bad or good!! Ms. La Plante obviously wrote this as a made-for-TV movie script. This should be a MIRA book on the romance-readers' summer beach-reading list. Skip this at all costs!

For the reader that is tired of the same old stories of tough, hard-drinking detectives in Los Angeles or New York, Lynda La Plante offers a refreshing detective in a tale from London that has a gratifyingly authentic flavor. There is a hint of La Plante's excellent Prime Suspect television series, and a hint of Jack the Ripper in this story of bright, young Detective Sergeant Anna Travis, daughter of the late Detective Chief Superintendent Jack Travis. Anna is chosen by Detective Chief Inspector Langton to join his team investigating a series of murders of prostitutes. There is almost no evidence identifying anyone as the killer, but the team continues to dig until they uncover puzzling clues pointing to a handsome, famous movie star. It seems unlikely that this wealthy man is the murderer, but as the investigation continues, he turns his charm toward Anna. Or is he stalking her? Suspense builds until we reach a gripping climax to a most enjoyable story.

Being the new kid on the block is disconcerting to say the least, as Anna Travis joins a bustling murder squad in search of a serial killer who has just claimed his seventh victim. Getting up to speed by taking home victim files, Travis is sorely tested by her first corpse and coroner's exam, but in the spirit of her father, a revered cop known as "Jack the Knife", the fledging murder detective throws herself into the case. The last victim brings a much-needed break in the case, the squad subject to constant budget constraints and the good will of their superiors, who in turn must answer to the people. Far from glamorous, this is tedious labor, checking and rechecking facts, witnesses, necessary minutiae by which a strong case is built. Travis finds her presence increasingly requested by DCI Langton, perhaps because she puts a female face on a primarily male venue, but also for her tenacity and willingness to get the job done.

From one lead to another, Travis takes her cues from an unpredictable Langton, who is by turns elated by new information and depressed by a lack of progress. Finally, the meager leads bear fruit, all leading to the son of a prostitute, one of the serial killer's victims; the son's name is Anthony Duffy, now a well-known actor, Alan Daniels. Everything points to this man, but the evidence is circumstantial at best. If Daniels is the killer, he is brilliantly circumspect, going out of his way to be cooperative and charming, even paying special attention to Anna. Unnerved by his interest, Anna is confused and begins to doubt her cop instincts. Is Alan genuinely attracted to her or is he a practiced sociopath? In either case, Langton suggests Travis take advantage of Daniel's interest to ingratiate herself, in hopes of finding the critical piece of evidence that will put him away. In spite of being her father's daughter, Anna is hampered by a lack of self-confidence in her relationships with men, a tempting target for the inscrutable actor, Daniels.

LaPlante is a gifted writer of this genre, shuffling characters, clues and plot elements for maximum suspense. While the sardonic Langton is a perfect boss, waxing hot and cold in equal measure, Travis, the new female detective, is both sympathetic and likeable, a compelling combination. Smart and increasingly savvy in this new job, Travis takes to murder, although she first suffers the usual pangs of initiation, foolish mistakes and dangerous situations born of her naiveté. This police procedural combines the inner workings of a tough occupation, with the loyal, determined personalities that dedicate their lives to making the world a safer place. Anna Travis is at home on her new turf, ready for her next assignment. Luan Gaines/ 2006.

You will love this book. It is my second favorite of Betsys books. It is about Mary Grace O'Malley who has inherited a bed and breakfast from a friend. John Wright, a love interst from years ago shows up and asks her help to solve a murder. As John persuades Mary Grace to help him explore the tragic secrets of twenty-five years ago, Miss Eugenia Atkins and her friends arrive for a vacation. But when a guest ends up dead, they all become involved in investigating this new mysterious crime. This book has the characters from (Hearts in Hiding..... her best book) Mark and Kate Iverson and Eugena Atkins plus a few other ladies from Hearts in Hiding all come to stay at the bed and breakfast and help solve the murder. I recommend you read Hearts in Hiding first.... not because this book builds off of that one, BECAUSE IT DOESN'T, but it would help you to better enjoy and understand the characters in this book. WONDERFUL READ, you won't want to put it down.... plus it keeps you guessing, you will not figure this one out until the end.

3 out of 5 stars Nazi spy thriller.......2005-04-20

This was MacInnes's first thriller (and first published novel as far as I know). It was written during WW2, but it is about a spy adventure the summer prior to the invasion of Poland. A husband and wife team get recruited to check out a spy chain that has become suspect. At first things seem to be going well, but then they get identified by the Nazis and must flee for their lives.

Along the way they meet an American journalist and a British student, each of whom has their own reasons for wanting to strike a blow against the Nazis.

Many of the elements used in the story are typical of MacInnes's later, more polished, work. However, the story is more of an action-thriller than the romantic character-based thriller novels that MacInnes eventually became so good at writing.

This book seemed more like a boring and drawn out made for TV movie than a suspenseful mystery novel.

The characters are stereotypical, lack depth and use recycled dialogue. The plot was unneccessarily drawn out and extremely predictable.

I couldn't put the book down because I kept hoping that it would get better...it didn't.
